Just hitting the button every time getting into the car is much easier than your suggested "tricks" in my opinion. Yes, it's annoying but you get used to it after time. Get into car, shut door, start car, hit auto stop/start button, put on seatbelt, put car in drive and go.

As you pull up to a stop, turn the steering wheel a few degrees off centre and the engine will keep running. There must be a sensor that doesn't allow it to turn off if it thinks it is going around a corner. Doesn't need to be turned a lot.

I have a 24 Legacy with 800 miles on the clock, this is my 4th and last Subi, when I get in and out or lock the doors it sounds like Big Ben with all the bells, when you want to turn on the A/C you have to scroll through the slow moving console, when you want to go from de fogger to normal heat you have to play with the screen, not to mention the radio, I spend more time staring at the console then I do on the road.

What I really hate is the automatic braking. This asinine thing keeps slamming on the brakes when I'm going around another car such as when it's almost around a corner and I'm going straight.

Good summary of the most hated activity of your car. After pushing the button so many times, what if it breaks? Even the workarounds are annoying. If it only takes 5 minutes, I would opt for the Eliminator device. Not sure about SUBAU, but other cars have an auxiliary battery just to handle ASS. There has to be some wear and tear factor on these vehicles.

Very simple fix, takes a couple of minutes and will not void warranty. But WILL turn off the auto start, can easily put back. Open the hood and find the battery. On the negative terminal there will be a wire connected to the terminal. This wire is on a connector so is easy to remove. Unplug the wire and that's it! No more auto stare.

It is such a stupid thing to have to disable it every time I drive but I have to. I moved to a hot climate from the midwest, and naturally when the car is stopped at a light in 100 degree weather, the goddamned Air Conditioner doesn’t run! I was putting it into park at long lights. I also disable the constantly beeping notifications that still will not recognize me, tells me I need to have my hands on the steering wheel, watch the road, etc. Thank god I am a low mileage driver with 15,000 miles on a nearly 3 year old vehicle.

I just sold my 2021 Subaru Crosstrek as the lease was almost up however while I really liked the car, the auto / off engine feature was the absolute worst. It wasn't so bad that the car had this feature but that when it shut off the engine and re-stated the engine, the car would actually shake. I told my dealership about it as well as made a complaint to the NTSA but nothing came of it. I have had other cars with this function but non of them ever caused the car to shake upon shut off and shut on. In addition, you are absolutely right that the amount of gas saved was minuscule. Subaru needs to figure this out as it really is an unnecessary feature.

This terrible feature is bad not only for the starter but for the battery and the engine too ($$$$). The accelerated deterioration of these expensive pieces of equipment far offset the cost of fuel saved and also the environmental print. Fortunately, it is automatically disabled in winter (temperature below minus -4).
Let's hope the legislator will realize it and end this feature or at least allow us to disable it until we enable it again. It can be useful in heavy trafic jam or when waiting in line to the carwash or some other point of service.

You cannot say that a starter motor has a life of 100,000 miles, depends entirely on the type of driving, short runs with frequent restarts are very different from long runs with perhaps only one or two restarts per day. I don't understand why you are making such a big fuss about this, you have to put on your seatbelt, put the car in drive etc., one extra thing to do which takes a second or so is no big deal. A lot of whining over nothing in my view.

  • @honorsoul

"Auto Start Stop" is a Terrible idea to sell more starters and is a Terrible idea to add with such great vehicles by Subaru.
Its more dangerous at jumping onto high speed highways because your vehicle takes around 1sec to start up again to initiate acceleration, therefor having around a 1sec lag to jump into traffic.
You cant pre turn your steering wheel at a stop because "Auto Start Stop" turned off your power steering.
Your air conditioner also turns off due to "Auto Start Stop", youll just have the fan blowing.
The vehicle settings doesnt let you permanently turn off "Auto Start Stop", it turns back on automatically after you start up your car again. Therefor you have to turn if off every time you start your car if you want it to be off.
Gas usage at idol barely uses any gas, so whats the real reason why they added this Auto Start Stop feature? You be the judge.

This is actually a very dangerous feature.. for an automaker that supposedly is obsessed about safety features.. this nightmarish feature has caused accidents. I know someone who was in an accident because she was so distracted by the engine stalling and the time it took to restart she was hit. If you are from Subaru.. please grow a brain. My radio stations in St Louis will be doing a very negative feature on this aggressively. I just bought 2 Outback Tourings just last week. Love the cars.. HATE this feature and like I said.. it alone negates ALL OTHER SAFETY FEATURES Subaru has put in the car at great expense. How stupid is that?????

Supposedly stuff like this might be government mandated. Did some research about whether disabling this is against the Law. And the EPA response is:. With regard to a start/stop system, for example, before alleging any violation the EPA would need to determine first whether the manufacturer of the vehicle in question used the start/stop system to comply with the applicable regulations concerning emissions. If so, removing that system or rendering it inoperative may amount to illegal tampering, and aftermarket parts and components that bypass, defeat, or render the system inoperative could amount to illegal defeat devices. To date, the tampering and aftermarket defeat device cases EPA has resolved have generally included the complete removal of filters and catalysts that are essential for controlling emissions of oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other tailpipe pollutants.”

It might be bad for friction on the motor. According to my Subaru there is a separate starter. If not, the manufacturers are probably doing their best to make sure the starters last as long as possible
