After watching this video numerous times (you all are so fun and great to hear both on and off camera!) I made it as a vegan version! Using 10 tbsp of aqua faba and coconut yogurt. It came out super yummy and absolutely tastes like bread, not cake. Thank you very much for this recipe!
Nice additions , I'm looking 4 adding more herbs in2 my diet .ie Herby bread ? Pineapple & Rosemary is a nice combo 4 a juice or Sugar free dessert of sone kind.. x❤x
You said just what I needed to hear: "You can use any kind of lentils." It looked like you even had some yellow split peas in your display. Many ingredients are more versatile than we give them credit for. Thank you for this enjoyable information.
We just made this (the version with the herbs + feta cheese) and it was SOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD! Thank you so much for sharing this. My boyfriend is allergic to corn and was elated to eat something that actually tastes like cornbread. You are a genius, and this is a recipe that I will be using for years to come! With love and gratitude from Canada.
Diane Thompson, check to see if it is just G M O corn that wrecks him. I tried white corn, now many of us find white corn is fine because no GM O. Yellow that says no GM O does make me sick, as does dairy from cows that eat yellow corn. Organic dairy is fine. Eggs from organic fed chickens fine, corn fed not, etc.

Yes, it is very much like a cornbread. This is the most unique version I’ve seen. I think it can become vegan either with egg replacer, or like flaxseed based binder.
Please make more gluten free foods, especially flat breads. Thank you so much, beautiful! You’re the best given your personality that reflect the beauty and love that’s in your heart!
Thank you Refika, you gave me soooo many ideas to introduce vegan/vegetarian dishes to my family, you truly inspired me. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thanks god there is also one small Turkish shop with many spices, ingredients etc. in my town, so I can get my supply. Much love!!!
This bread turned out amazingly well. Refika’s directions are so on point . The bread is as done at 355 degrees Fahrenheit in exactly 35 minutes to the second:) impressive Rafika - I used fenugreek leaves, garlic, red chillier pepper and spring onions. Amazing flavors. What I love about this recipe is that it is so versatile and can be globally modified to suit the regional tastes of people anywhere in the world. This is will be a staple healthy recipe that I will using and experimenting with different flavors! Thank you Rafika and your team .
Thank you so much. I have been looking for an alternative to wheat for ages. Made this today, amazing, simply delicious. So healthy, no more wheat bread for me and my hubby. The best part is that it is so easy to make.
This is the best gluten free quick bread I have found and tried. Made it last night with dried figs, thyme and vegan cheese. I don't regularly eat dairy, so I used tofu in place of yogurt. My bread didn't grow as tall (maybe the baking powder has lower strength?), nevertheless it had a wonderful texture and flavor. I can think of many combinations: walnuts/ figs, rosemary olives, etc. This is now my go-to recipe for the daily bread 😋
OMG!!! I made your lentil cake. I did not have yoghurt as I am dairy fee, so I made some sunflower seed cream a little ACV....and also I used our Portuguese sheep cheese diced. It is heavenly!!! I have made red lentils flatbread using lentils, water and salt, but I have never seen a fluffy bread like this using the red lentils! I can't wait to try it 😊 I was diagnosed with Celiac's 15 years ago, and while nothing will compare to wheat/gluten bread, it's nice to have these beautiful alternatives. Thank you ❤
I just made this using a mix of 3 lentils and it came out delicious! I also added come shredded zucchini in the batter along with lots of fresh herbs. It reminded me of firinda kabak mucver with lentils. My mother makes a very similar Indian bread called handvoo and it was a favorite growing up. Wonderful easy recipe! Thank you.
I stay away from gluten and it's hard to find good recipes. I tried this recipe out of curiousily thinking I shouldn't get my hopes up... My goodness was I surprised!! This bread is unbelievable!! Made it with brown lentils, and then it almost tastes like a bran muffin of sorts. It stays moist for days! Also made the red lentil and halloumi version which is out of this world. Thank you so much Refika!
Usually when people want to make a gluten free bread it's because they have gluten sensitivity or celiac disease so pairing lentils with cereal is kinda defeating the purpose. Soaking and draining before putting into the processor already helps with digestion and adding certain herbs ie cumin takes care of the bloating for people whose bellies are not used to plant-based diet's amount of lentils, beans etc. As a side note I thought I was always bloated because of legumes consumption but turns out I'm extremely sensitive to gluten and my problem disappeared after changing wheat pasta to rice/millet/potatoes. Not eating gluten also made my acne disappear - I've had it my whole life🙃
I made the lentil bread today and I'm absolutely thrilled with the result. I will be making this bread every day I love ❤️ love ❤️ this bread I'm gluten free. Thank you for sharing.
Now I'm ready for this, in my African version ,for anyway I have been making sourdough gluten free bread. SO SPECIALLY THE 2ND ONE CAN'T WAIT TO DO IT.
Ok ,I'm have been making both lentils into bread.Soak #1 8hrs to 12hrs then pour out ,#2 to prepare for sprouting once it starts ,#3 now to ferment with sea salt in the oven overnight till it make some bulb, low types if boil then I make the past with it,then season of choice ,oil ,I can add chia ,and coconut flour coconut milk baking powder 1 lime squeeze, 1 tsp of sweetener ,baking powder or if I want another gluten free flour ,in west Africa we do black eyed peas with millet flour with some wheat flour to make it consistent, so I make my own turn in it doing gluten free sourdough. Then I bake ,put the dough or mixture in the baking pan then that is my twist of the lentil bread.
I made this today! I was going to comment that I felt like there was something missing in the savory version, and thought I might try some caramelized onion in the next batch I make. But I looked at the recipe again and realized I left out the 4 sprigs of green onion😅. Now realizing that, I think my next batch will have the green onions, a little caramelized onion on top with the seeds, and another half teaspoon of salt. Thank you so much Refika and team!
It's now later in the day, and I made some caramelized onions to have with the bread (that I forgot to add the spring onions to). It's VERY good this way! I'll definitely do both spring onion in the bread and top with caramelized onions before baking the next time I make it.
Dear Refika! I made the cake/bread today, I woke up very early, because we have heat waves here, and I didn't want to use the oven during the high temperature. We love it! I am already thinking, what do I use next time, maybe basil, dry tomato, cheddar cheese or feta :) I know this is a bit older video, but I wanted to tell you, I love your show! Work together with good friends must be amazing!
I love every single recipe you show us. some are too complicated for me but most are so simple even I cant wait to make them. Non gluten Lentil bread? Who knew. I cant wait to make this, especially the version with cheese and onions and olives🤩YUM!!! Thank you for showing us the food of your country.
Thank you so much for this! It looks wonderful, especially the savory version. It always hurts my heart when an otherwise lovely recipe contains gluten flour. This has been a gift!
It works really well. Thank you Refika for bringing this to us. Now it is in the oven, 3rd time, and I have halved the ingredients and used a 20cm spring form cake tin. This time the base is split green peas and I have mixed in some diced sun-dried tomatoes and spring onions, with nigella seed on top, but I have also mixed in one tablespoon of rice flour because eating rice with a pulse gives a full protein combination (or so I have been told.) We are having a smaller ratio of carbohydrates with our meals to manage blood sugar. The bread will be eaten with a lovely rich tomatoey ratatouille and cheese. Yum yum! (I hope it works this time)
FYI: One Tablespoon of rice flour won't make a complete protein with 2 cups of lentils (or even 1 cup). However, the dairy (yogurt) in this recipe makes it a whole protein to start with (either a grain or a dairy makes a whole protein with legumes). So no real need to add the rice flour. But, I doubt the rice flour in such a small amount very much affected the recipe. Can hardly wait to try this.
After some experimentation, today I made a vegan version of your plain lentil bread. I used 2 cups of red lentils, 1 cup coconut milk, 3 flax eggs, 1/4 cup apple sauce, 4 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt and 1.2 teaspoons olive oil. Baked for one hour at 355 degrees F. This is from a fan in Gainesville, Florida, USA. Thank you for your recipes.
Yum. I've made this a few times with different fillings, but I made a version today which is to die for. I put the lentils on to soak overnight, covered them and then had no time to deal with them yesterday morning. As a result my lentils were soaking for a day and a half and started to ferment. I also used natural yoghurt that was a bit past its 'use by' date. As a result I got amazing rise on my bread and the texture was more like conventional bread I am used to in the UK. I'm doing this every time now!!
Thanks for sharing. Would you be so kind and let me know if you used any yeast ?anything else because I’m trying to do this today but I don’t want to use the eggs. Have a great day
I have seen recipes for lentil bread before, but nobody says anything about the flavor or texture. You have sold me on the process. Thank you for showing us such healthy food.
OMG.......... It is mega delicious. I made the savoury one with some like feta cheese, which I dont have hallumi on hand, some olive and herbs..... it is so dangerous that I can't stop to eating it. I am sure that I gonna bake one with hallumi in the future. Thank you for the recipe. 🤗
I just made the Lentil bread 1/2 recipe and it is delicious. Thank you.....oh so yummy, so easy. Canada Next time out of curiosity I will substitute chia seeds for eggs.
These breads look absolutely delicious, and I must make them! I never thought about using lentils for bread. I have a sister who is very allergic to wheat and is always searching for nontraditional bread. I'm going to make this for her. I also love halumi and will be making the savory cake, too. Thank you so much for including the recipes in the description box. Be well, and God bless!
Merhaba Rafika! I made the bread cake this morning and you are absolutely right, it is very surprising and magical! It was difficult to resist but we were good and did wait until it was cool. Thank you so much for sharing your precious recipes 🙏
Hey Refika In India there's a savoury dish that's called Khaman Dokhla which is so similar to this dish. It is made with chickpea flour and is steamed and not baked. That's a total vegetarian version and no eggs are used. There's another dish called Handvo. In our Konkani tradition we make crepes of the lentils too which taste absolutely yummmmm. It was great to watch this. I am a vegetarian and do not eat eggs yet i might try a substitute to egg and try this dish.
I so enjoy watching your videos. I dream of visiting Istanbul from the US one day. I always appreciate when you include vegan recipes, so if you could modify this one it would be wonderful!
OK! Up until I came to Turkey I had never tried lentils, considering them to be the fodder of tree hugging pot smoking vegetarian's. I was raised in the 60's/70's and that was the staple fare of this particular group of people. Wind forward to spring of 2021, I discovered your channel and the lentil soup. My wife asked me to make it for her and that's it, she and I absolutely love it, so quick so tasty so filling. Now this week March 1st I tried this lentil bread, just the plain one, yet again my wife loved it, I was OK about it. Then I put in Turkish feta and onion, omgfg so nice I ate most of it this morning. Lentils on so when I came back they were ready to bake more. This time I added Chilli flakes and remembered to put the seed topping on before I baked it. It is probably the best thing that I've made, I've been cooking everyday, one way and another, for 45 years, this recipe is sublime. I will be sending you the cost for new clothes, I'm going to bloat up tremendously, being unable to say no to not one but several slices at a time. Absolutely well done on this recipe, I've passed it on to many friends who are eager to try it. Lentil salad is next on the list. Oh look a tree, lets go hug it. Where's my bongos and spliff. 🤣🤣🤣
Gosh 😂have you never had a side of dal in an Indian restaurant? You don’t know what you missed your entire life. Give it go. Unless you hate spicy food 😅
Waaaw! Refika!! Thank you for this Recipe👏👏👏🤗Iam great full to you for Introducing US this Healthy and glootin free Recipe. Since I am watching your fantastic video's I also known that your country IS very Beautiful!! and Recently' we went to Sri Lanka' with Turkish airlines, whay we have Choose that airline? Because of THE BEST CHEF IN THE WORLD' RAFIKA😁👏👏.The most BEAUTIFUL and BIGGER AIRPORT! Amazing, MY husband Promised me that ONE day we will visit this beautiful country. Thank you Refika and the team. GOD BLESS YOU ALL💐💐❤🇪🇸😍
I would never have thought of making bread with lentils! But seeing you make it and thiking about how good lentils are I love the idea. I make soup fairly often and I can imagine this being a lovely accompaniment so I'll give it a try soon. I made my second batch of pomegranate sour this week so this will be my next food project 😄 Happy days!
It's just like dhokla which is prepared in India . It's made using gram flour (yellow lentil ) . Much love God bless Refika !! Both dishes look great .
It's actually called KHAMAN and not DHOKLA (like all non gujjus refer to it).. DHOKLA has some portion of rice in the mix Moreover, it's steamed just like idli. In fact in Gujarat we have another item called IDLA which is also steamed and is like idli. The difference is that IDLA is steamed in one big thali and cut into bite sized pieces. There's plenty of variations of all three. Though one could compare this bread with another Gujarati dish called HANDVO, which though has rice along with lentils and is baked not steamed.
Refikaaa!! How did you lose so much weight when you are around food all the time!! It's amazing!! What will power you have! Way to go!! We have a vegan cousin for this bread in India called 'dhokla' made with chickpea flour and many variations of it . Yum! 'Handvo' is another one with lentils and vegetables. Lots of love from the US
Thank you, I am going to try your bread recipes because I need to look for alternative recipes for breads for diabetics. Lentils are said to help lower the blood sugar levels. I made a spicy version of red lentil soup earlier and a very spicy red lentil curry last night. Your family/ friends are so relaxed and it fun to see their expressions as they munch on your delicious lentil breads.
Just wanted to say “Thank you” The struggle for gluten-free bread is real for me and being India (that too eastern part of India), we use red lentils a loooooot…never thought of making bread…will soak them right away Sending lots of love 💕
Thank you so much for this recipe from Portugal! I hate sweet bread and it's hard to find glúten free recipes without sugar❤. Turkish cuisine is delicious❤.
I like the fact that you are very clear in terms of voice, volume and straight straight to the point. And it’s great that the other lady adding up by asking questions that we would have genuinely thought and asked. Thank you and thanks to all your team work work efforts., very much very beautiful video to watch. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫✅💕💕💕
Wow this looks good! Thanks for actually tasting the bread and telling us what it tastes like! I've seen several videos of making lentil bread but no one has said what it tastes like! I want to try these 2 recipes asap! Keep up the great work!
awesome!!!what a found!!! I keep an eye on you now :) thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've made it today and it's absolute success!!! So tasty!!! Thank you! Thank you!!!
Hi Retika, we in India we make a similar thing known as Dhokla with yellow lentil and we steam it. We in India use a lot of lentils to make Dosa and idlis. We use a lot of millet in making our hand breads. Your recipes are wonderful. Would definitely love to try this. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
What a fantastic bread recipe. My husband loves cornbread but can no longer have white flour or sugar. He really liked this bread. Texture is a lot like his cornbread. We are from the USA
I am following you since before the pandemic and I have cooked a lot of your recipes. I cannot believe you keep finding new stuff to cook on your channel. Keep up the good work! Your recipes are fantastic, delicious and easy to make. Thank you for all the cooking ideas! :)
Hello, I'm so grateful to have found your channel. I'm vegan and also I try to eat les gluten. You can't imagine how helpful your recipes are. You refresh my kitchen with lovely and easy recipes. Thanks a million❤❤❤
I made the cake version yesterday and it came out so well. As the orange dhal we get here is already split, I reduced the the qty a little bit. Everybody loved it. Thank you Refika ! Lots of love to all of you from Sri Lanka 🌹
Made the plain lentil bread in 2 loaf pans filled to half and they came out beautifully! Locked and smelled like cake but tasted like bread, very nice.
I'm glad you compared the bread version to cornbread - I love cornbread cooked in a cast iron skillet! But that savory cake looks even more delicious :)
Thank you so much for this recipe, I am gluten free, all gluten free food items are so expensive here in London, I saw this video yesterday, i made this bread this morning, and it turned out perfect, next I will try making the corn version. I will try to make a sweet version, as a slice of cake, would be great, who would have believed it, lentil being having so many different uses and taste, Thanks again.
You beat me to it, Refika. I was going to comment that this looks just like cornbread! I'd love to make this, using ground flax and water for the eggs and soy/cashew yogurt instead of dairy yogurt. 🤤
@@hibiscusflower5911 So, I'd possibly just swap out 4 eggs (which would roughly equal to 220g) with silken tofu. I believe it would work perfectly, also not lacking of the protein that'd normally come from the eggs in the original recipe. As for your question, the dairy yogurt, it's best to stick to the recipe and use a yogurt, of course a vegan one in that. I'd possibly use a soy based one but if you have any soy or even nut allergies I think chickpea yogurt would definitely work. Actually I imagine it's best to use either soy or chickpea yogurt, so if you can't pick soy I'd go with chickpea yogurt. Not sure if you can find one commercially (I personally have never came across a chickpea yogurt on the market) but it's so easy to make at home. I highly recommend trying giving it a go. Just search vegan chickpea yogurt online/UA-cam and you'll have plenty of references. Also for the cake version, you can most certainly use firm tofu or any vegan feta-like cheeses from the markets. OOOORR even better, I again highly recommend making your own by curdling your choice of plant based milk with a few tbsp of lemon juice. Hope this helps!
Just made the savory cake version and waiting for it to cool. I feel like Bahar and Burak -- it smells so good in here I want to eat it now! It looks very pretty in the pan, I wish I could post a photo here. I know it will be delicious... every Refika recipe I have tried has been great and your videos are so enjoyable to watch. Thank you for being a wonderful place to tune in during the pandemic!! With gratitude from Canada. ❤
You could make this vegan by using flaxseed ‚egg‘. 1 tbsp of ground flaxseed to 3 tbsp of water = 1 egg. Allow to sit for a half hour.
Im a diabetic, I cannot eat bread but can eat lentils.. this would be a dream come true for me.. ❤❤❤

thanks for your comment!💖 I just posted a question asking what I could use instead of eggs and yogurt! then read your comment😁

Thank you 🎉
Well done you! Sounds good
🎉🎉🎉
Have a great day
For some time now I am following a low carb diet and this lentil bread comes at the right moment. Thank you for all your recipes, dear team!
Lentils are still high in carbohydrates dear
@@ripangill7606 Thank you for your answer! Be blessed.
I have seen recipes for lentil bread before, but nobody says anything about the flavor or texture. You have sold me on the process. Thank you for showing us such healthy food.
So much warmth and hospitality oozes out of every video. Thanks for spreading the joy team Refika.
yes, sooo much warmth, friendliness, hospitality in Refika nd team.i very much like them
Hi from Ukraine!!! i will definitely try both of those, cant eat wheat flour too much lately....thank you!!!
Use flax seeds as egg replacement for vegan version - many recipes online, including for lentil seed bread. You can also make vegan yoghurt.
Hi, I made my bread I don't have yogurt but it came out good for me it had the texture of regular bread. Thank you. From Bermuda 🇧🇲
Soaking more lentil today love this bread.
Thank you for sharing this recipe typed out below. So helpful.
You’re welcome! ☺️
Lentils are considered Holy in our culture. 🌿
I just made the Lentil bread 1/2 recipe and it is delicious. Thank you.....oh so yummy, so easy. Canada Next time out of curiosity I will substitute chia seeds for eggs.
Oh my goodness! These gluten free breads are less complicated than other gluten free bread recipes. Thank you so much. I’m going to try this soon! 💜🌸💜
Exactly my thought too.
To think it's even healthier.
I am game.
Another amazing recipe! You never disappoint. On WW and this recipe cut into 16 pieces is ONE POINT! One point! Magical.
Thanks I’m watching for Guyana 🇬🇾
Merhaba Rafika! I made the bread cake this morning and you are absolutely right, it is very surprising and magical! It was difficult to resist but we were good and did wait until it was cool. Thank you so much for sharing your precious recipes 🙏
You guys are really sweet!! Reminds me of a kind man from Turkey I met in France many years ago. Take care.
Hey Refika
In India there's a savoury dish that's called Khaman Dokhla which is so similar to this dish.
Yes this reminded me of dhokla
I was thinking just egg or aquafaba and maybe a homemade tofu Feta 😋
No this is handvo, it’s made like this only
@@luckystar4767 true. This is very similar to Handvo without the eggs though.
Looked and smelled so Delicious through this computer that I had to subs😋🍽️ready for a slice😊
That looks very delicious and definitely worth to try it thanks for sharing it with us ❤
This is perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner! Make a batch and you have a week worth of meal. ❤️
your mother is a very lucky lady. thank you
I'm definitely making this bread. The version with the cheese looks especially delicious.
That is the most unusual and delishous looking thing I've seen for awhile. Thank you for sharing!
Waaaw! Refika!! Thank you for this Recipe👏👏👏🤗Iam great full to you for Introducing US this Healthy and glootin free Recipe. I would gladly wait overtime to try anything you make, Refika!
İngilizceniz çok iyi. Çok başarılı
Hi I love your channel and I love Turkish food very very much
Thank you for sharing this beautiful food and healthy too
It's just like dhokla which is prepared in India .
It's made using gram flour (yellow lentil ) .
Much love God bless Refika !!
Both dishes look great .
I had the same thought.
My thoughts exactly!
@@dhadpadi Even idly (urad dal) is similar to this expect that it has rice in it
It's actually called KHAMAN and not DHOKLA (like all non gujjus refer to it)..
@@FreeYourImagination Yes Handvo. I had this while watching this and came here in search of any comment I can like and reply on.🙂
So lovely. I will make for my sister, she cannot eat gluten. Thankyou
Lots of love from the US
Reminded me of dhokla too
Thank you so much for this…not just gluten free but this bread is also on the lower glycemic side and good alternative for a diabetic like me!
Omg both look really delicious, and the timing is perfect, because I wanted to reduce my carb consumption. Thank you very much!
Just wanted to say
“Thank you”
The struggle for gluten-free bread is real for me and being India (that too eastern part of India), we use red lentils a loooooot…never thought of making bread…will soak them right away
Sending lots of love 💕
Thank you so much for this recipe from Portugal! I hate sweet bread and it's hard to find glúten free recipes without sugar❤. Turkish cuisine is delicious❤.
I made this tonight, it was wonderful! I wish I could share a photo of it!
We're glad to hear these beautiful comments from you. You can always tell us if we need to improve a thing too. Lots of love ❤️
Savory cake version turned out to be amazing. Loved it
Thanks a lot dear you're so amazing and so sooo talented 😊 i will definitely try this delicious recipe 😋, God bless you 🙏
Hi Retika, we in India we make a similar thing known as Dhokla with yellow lentil and we steam it. We in India use a lot of lentils to make Dosa and idlis. We use a lot of millet in making our hand breads.
Your recipes are wonderful. Would definitely love to try this. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
That's exactly what I thought when I watched this. And dhokla is nothing like bread! But I will try it and see how it goes
Dokla and idlis are best to include in your diet 😊
This one is almost close copy of Handvo 😅
Lentils are so healthy! What a wonderful idea. I’ve experimented with savory additions to cornbread and loved it, so I know I would love this!
This is such a unique recipe. My close friend cannot eat gluten to it is so good for her. Definitely would be making it soon.
I have heard of lentil bread but never tried it. As usual, Refika, has inspired me to try something new. Thank you 🙏
Thank you my grandma made something similar. A great healthy high protein bread subsitute for keto.
I will try to make a sweet version, as a slice of cake, would be great, who would have believed it, lentil being having so many different uses and taste, Thanks again.
so happy to hear 🥰
You beat me to it, Refika. I was going to comment that this looks just like cornbread! I'd love to make this, using ground flax and water for the eggs and soy/cashew yogurt instead of dairy yogurt. 🤤
A vegan version, yes! Silken tofu also works in place of eggs :)
@@ingridaholmes what else might work instead of yogurt?
@@hibiscusflower5911Almond/coconut yogurt and high fat coconut milk are what I
I use. Delicious!
I'm finally trying it now! It's in the oven with some black olive tapenade and green onions in it. Can't wait😅
Ok, this is not only *delicious*, but the texture is so surprisimg! Very tender. And the dill is EVERYTHING.
Thankyou sooooo much for this. My husband is diabetic and it was soooo hard to leave bread. Will surely try this in sha Allah.🥰🥰🥰
