Yes, the crows will even teach their children who are the nice people and the mean ones.My brother in law once saved a crow from some sticky rodent trapping paper, but pulled out many feathers in the process. The crow cursed him and got all his crow friends to scream at him every time he walked outside. For years.
We had a pet crow. My dad found it as a baby at his camp. We fed it and watched him grow only to fly away one day. So my mother says. His name was Blackjack.
Hi i like so Much you give food to this bird...mabye they try to Help you find Some intresting things.?:-) mabye.....happy New year to you my sweet tames hunter from John on littel Island in baltic sea
I like that you're friends with the crows. I'm sure they recognize you and look forward to the treats! I toss peanuts onto the roof for the local crows. They get a treat and my cats get to pretend to stalk them from inside the house. Sometimes when I get up there will be three of them waiting on the telephone wires for me. We call it the fly thru (like a drive thru window at McDonalds).
I so enjoy your wonderful post! ....just curious, is it me or does anyone else’s eye have a good look around the debris as Nicola discovers treasures? Happy New Year!
Ha! I sure do! I’m always telling her where to look, but she just won’t listen! Like tonight when she found the second pipe, the pipe stem broke and she left a piece behind, but she didn’t notice. I tried to tell her, but no, she was on to her next treasure. But she always shares, so I don’t get too upset. Have a great New Year Jane. Maybe in this new year we will get Nicola to hear us!
Your kindness to the crows exemplifies the obvious respect that you have for life and is reflective of the kindness of your heart. I so enjoy your forays into the past from the flotsam and jetsam that you discover.Keep on digging!
I’m always so impressed how well the pipes hold up over the hundreds of years in the water! The stems may have broken but the bowls are almost always whole when you find them.
Greetings from the U.S. I really enjoyed your video. I just wanted to share some reading that I've done. John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and other Americans of historical note made comments about seeing thousands of broken clay pipes and pipe stems near the Thames area and the river itself while going for walks in London when they were there during their diplomatic service during and after the War of Rebellion. I was excited to see you find those pieces and got kind of a"" historical high"", if you will, remembering the excerpts from the books I've read. Thank you so very much and continued happy mudlarking.
So many fine treasures on Christmas Eve, you were very good this year. I am fascinated by the pipes. At one time l used to make clay pipes , not as good; but stopped because l was told they caused lung cancer. Now l watch you taking them out of the mud. So at one time clay pipes were very popular, and well made. Thank you for sharing your mud larkings. And may you find many more treasures in 2019!.❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤

I enjoy the bittersweetness of wondering about the lives of the prior owners of the treasures that can be found. Thank you for the many fascinating and informative videos you work so hard to share with the UA-cam community. Bonne Annee’ from a Cajun girl in South Louisiana. ❤️🇺🇸👍
Great little video again Nicola, thanks. Just wondering if the delicate, crumbling button might be a Fire Brigade button? The star-shaped emblem is a close match for the badges of many UK brigades and it was common at one time for the water to be taken directly from the river to fight fires, especially during the Blitz.
I smoke a pipe periodically, and it excites me how many old pipes you find. I love history, and to think of the time period those were smoked in. Very fascinating! I also love how you associate with the crows! Happy New Year!

Why on earth you have not been snapped up for television presenting I do not know. You have a lovely well modulated soft tone of voice and you are extremely easy on the eye. Maybe not, we would lose you from taking us for an exciting stroll along our Thames foreshore. Like many others before me have said ... I love it when you do your pipe extractions. At 25:35 I could swear I see a button dead center of the screen when you said you dropped your button when you went to wash it. Perhaps just a pebble? Thank you for all the wonderful videos. I also enjoy the beautiful music and scenes of nature and birds.
Great finds of course being a Formula 1 fan, everytime I here the word button, I am immediately reminded of my favorite F1 driver and a good sportsman, your countryman Jenson Button.
Happy New Year from Montana, United States! I’m fascinated by all that you can find in the Thames mud! Love all the pipes, coins, buttons and bottle stoppers! Although we don’t have the wealth of history the UK has, when digging in my garden I’ve found quite a few very interesting bits, mostly rusty pieces of very old farm equipment or square nails. The most interesting was what I think is an ancient finger bone which I found in soil brought in from elsewhere to enhance my garden. Thanks for your very interesting videos! Cheers!
Hello again I'm not sure but the ordnance my be part of a electric fuses maybe 60 amps or less! And I saw the all knowing eye on one of those Masonic pipes left side. You know I really enjoy the trip on the river with you and you know I'm still jealous and envious over here in Tennessee I hope you enjoyed Christmas and I hope you have a Happy New Year!!!
Hi Nicola! I'm from the USA and I absolutely love your videos. They are so engaging and entertaining! I watch your videos to escape the insanity in the States. Thanks for helping me through it all!
What a lovely stopper! The masonic emblems are the compass and square -means to be level and true, the all seeing eye is above the compass and square, the pyramid is because they were builders, and the hilt with out the sword means to be open to new ideas and better yourself. My brother was a mason. And Ive learned watching some other shows. The pipes are stunning for sure, the amount of detail is wonderful. As for the buttons: the star on the button is made of bricks and there was a crown in the middle, not able to find anything on it here in the states. I like the ruler, even after being in the river it is in good shape. I want to wish you a Happy New Year. And the best for 2019.
Just watching the livestream of the New Year's fireworks in london from the sky over the Themes and I couldn't help but think about you and the mudlarking and all the great relics just sitting there on the shores.
I found 2 pieces from a plate about 6 - 8 months apart in time, and to my total amazement they fit together, so wish we could upload photos to UA-cam, they had a beautiful blue flower pattern. Your find kinda looks like a seaweed pattern to me, such a cool way to get that pattern too.
I think it is awesome of you to research the history of an item and then share with us so everybody else can learn the history as well👍👍👍 and it Looks like you saved that star button just in time 👏👏. Awesome video

Thank you for this lovely and peaceful walk along the Thames, nice finds, sorry about the button. Bonne et heureuse année 2019, excellente santé, le plus important ! A bientôt. 😊👍👍👍
The cartridge at 28:28 is a .577/.450 Martini Henry cartridge case circa 1870's. It is made from rolled brass. From about the mid 1880's they had the technology to make a drawn brass cartridge. Ued by the british during the Zulu War of 1879 and 1st Boer War 1880-81. Happy new year from South Africa!
Nice! I'd like to watch more of your videos. Not sure I buy the idea of the blue on the pottery shard being dropping an acid onto a base -- or I could be wrong... Looks more like a watery cobalt oxide dropped onto a thicker white glaze, but... I dunno. Meanwhile, I would LOVE to see the molds William Cope used to make those pipes... The logistics of the hollow in those long stems intrigues me.
And a Happy New Year! Way back in the 1960s I had a pair of trousers with flaps over the back pockets buttoned with gilt buttons like the rose one you have, except the design was a chess knight. Very narrow legs, saddle pockets and cuffless when most trousers still had cuffs. Supposedly an Italian style and really fashionable for a couple of years - before flares or bell-bottoms came in. Maybe 1964 - 65. I had to think hard about that.
Congratulations Nicola on a fantastic year of sharing your mudlarking adventures. It's been a pleasure to watch. Always interesting. Always informative. You're running a close second to The Hoover Boys for my favourite vids for 2018. Please over take them in 2019! Cheers from Winchester.
After seeing one of your video's on mudlarking on the river Theems i got real excited because this is a old hobby of mine back in the netherlands. I went to Londen for the fireworks and had limited time. i did find pipes and i found allot at the river enough to fill a bag. but because of the limited time i couldn't do a good search. i love to give you the spot i found, i think you can make a great video about it and make you very happy. greetings Kevin.
Hi Nicola. Hope you are having a Happy New Year. With regards to the wooden rule you found, could we have some close up pictures, as these can date back to the 1500's and are sometimes dated, they are very interesting to some collectors. Don't worry about the condition as these will not be used to measure anything any-more. Here's hopefully hoping. Cheers Jeff.
Love your videos. I live in Florida, USA but, being of predominately English/Irish heritage, I have always been extremely interested in the history. I have learned a lot from watching. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Happy Happy New Year Nicola..the lost button just wasn't ready to be revealed..you will find it again when it's ready.. thank you for a great 2018 year of discovery..looking forward to your new 2019 adventures.
Hi Nicola and a Happy Healthy New Year to you as well!! I stumbled upon your channel when I was looking for bottle digging videos. How fun it is to watch you find treasures new and old. As you know, America is quite young and when I'm out metal detecting or bottle digging I can feel the same thrill of taking a peek at my countries history. You on the other hand live in a country that goes back to the bronze age and older. Now that is a thrill! I call will call us "Urban Archaeologist" and perhaps one day I'll get the chance to mud lark with a fellow larker. Thanks for the exciting and very interesting content!! Good Luck!!!
Great discoveries, congratulations. Not able to help with your questions. Most times I learn something new from you😉. Looking forward to your 2019 adventures and wish you and yours the very best.
Hi, Happy new year to you. i like your videos very much. I like to determ finds to give an answer to a question, but i saw already humoristic answers passing by so in this year i'll start with a jolly one; At 16:55 that button.....( sshhht....is from Star-wars)
Hi the lead with holes in are dress or petticoat weights as they where used to keep them down in the wind. went on the Thames back in the 1980s and found a lot it cost a £1 a day with a metal detector
Nicola!! I can see a/the button in video at 25:35 in center of frame, just above the brown bottle mouth. It's upside down, but it looks like a button. Too bad this is so long ago...
Absolutely love the Masonry pipes! If my dad was still here, being a mason for over 60 years, he would have had all kinds of stories to tell. Also love the gaming pieces, bet Tom or Simon would know exactly what they are and what they were used for. They, like you, seem to have knowledge about just about everything! Happy New Year, my friend!! Can't wait to join you on your wonderful larks coming in 2019! xxx~Jen
My daughter did my toenails two days before Christmas and I cant get the glitter out, it's embedded in my nails. Unfortunately I'm dad, mum wasn't daft enough
I would be SO excited to find Masonic pipes... I am descended from many generations of Master Masons. Thank you for sharing your lovely evening lark with us!
HI Nicola, I hope this message finds you well and in good health. Those buttons that you have pictured with a crown and three cannons are Spanish American war buttons worn by men who served during that war. veterans also wore those buttons and their clothing after the end of the war. Their are quit a few of the buttons designs used, but they always come with the crown.; Dennis Stacey, Glen Allen, Va, usa
Your Ordinance is the end of antique brass bicycle pump!,nice finds thanks!!!,if treads on a Schrader valve case closed looked like insert that pushes valve open and threaded on inside in .
Another great video Nicola have really enjoyed all your videos of 2018 a hell of a lot of work goes filming and editing but you have produced some great mudlarking. Wish you and your family a Happy New Year.

Happy Happy New Year Nicola..the lost button just wasn't ready to be revealed..you will find it again when it's ready.. thank you for a great 2018 year of discovery..looking forward to your new 2019 adventures.
Happy new year Nicola! I spied a gold coin right away to the left of your hand at 3:43. Hopefully still there when you go back!
And the boxing glove probably fell out of a punch bowl.
Funny
What a wonderful giggle I got from "The Punch Bowl". Thanks
Lol lol lol !!
😂😂😂
I watch from Arkansas,USA and love your videos! another interesting one.....love the game pieces.

Hi, Happy new year to you. i like your videos very much.
I like to determ finds to give an answer to a question, but i saw already humoristic answers passing by so in this year i'll start with a jolly one; At 16:55 that button.....( sshhht....is from Star-wars)
Nice video Nicola.always a pleasure to watch.😀
Thank you x
Many thanks for sharing and wishing you a happy new year 🥳🥂🙂
Hi the lead with holes in are dress or petticoat weights as they where used to keep them down in the wind. went on the Thames back in the 1980s and found a lot it cost a £1 a day with a metal detector
Nicola!! I can see a/the button in video at 25:35 in center of frame, just above the brown bottle mouth. It's upside down, but it looks like a button. Too bad this is so long ago...
Love the rose button & the glass bottle stopper.
Happy New Year! (I saved this vid so I could begin the new year with a smile.)
Thank you for sharing.
Happy new year ,may the Thames keep giving love from Cornwall
Absolutely love the Masonry pipes! If my dad was still here, being a mason for over 60 years, he would have had all kinds of stories to tell. Also love the gaming pieces, bet Tom or Simon would know exactly what they are and what they were used for. They, like you, seem to have knowledge about just about everything! Happy New Year, my friend!! Can't wait to join you on your wonderful larks coming in 2019! xxx~Jen
If it wasn't for the sparkly nails it wouldn't seem like xmas !
The sparkly muddy fingers are making my day!
My daughter did my toenails two days before Christmas and I cant get the glitter out, it's embedded in my nails. Unfortunately I'm dad, mum wasn't daft enough
That bit of ordnance might be the remains of a flare. Happy New Year.
Nope
HAPPY NEW YEAR THANKS FOR ME WITH YOU ON YOUR LARK ,looking forward to your next piece of art xx
Well stone the crows actually big fan of them more great finds Nicola.
Recently found this site, fabulous, really professionally done, love it, thank you Nicola!
the lead shapes with holes in them look like lead fishing weights to me. I have seen them in old fishing tackle boxes.
I would be SO excited to find Masonic pipes... I am descended from many generations of Master Masons. Thank you for sharing your lovely evening lark with us!
If the square is on top of both legs of the compass it is a Masonic design , when one leg is above the square it is of the Orange Lodge.
HI Nicola, I hope this message finds you well and in good health. Those buttons that you
have pictured with a crown and three cannons are Spanish American war buttons worn by men who served during that war. veterans also wore those buttons and their clothing after the end of the war. Their are quit a few of the buttons designs used, but they always come with the crown.;
Dennis Stacey, Glen Allen, Va, usa
The button at 9:52 reminds me of a coat of arms from a town in Germany googel "Lippische Rose" or "Wappen der Stadt Lippstadt"
Thank you will do
Your Ordinance is the end of antique brass bicycle pump!,nice finds thanks!!!,if treads on a Schrader valve case closed looked like insert that pushes valve open and threaded on inside in .
No its not a bike pump.
Its a 577/450 rolled brass, Martini Henry cartridge, the steel rim has rusted off.
Simply amazed by the Historical treasures you spot in that mucky rubble. Happy New Year!
The first button with star design looks like a Guards Division tunic button - Coldstream or Grenadiers I believe.
Another great video Nicola have really enjoyed all your videos of 2018 a hell of a lot of work goes filming and editing but you have produced some great mudlarking. Wish you and your family a Happy New Year.
The brass shot shell thing looks like an old electrical fuze. Happy New Years from Canada.
