  • For a very long time, I had looked at the map of South America and wondered about those 3 tiny countries at the top -- the countries that no one knew even existed. One of those countries, Guyana, actually had a huge immigrant population in New York, where I'm from. It was the only English speaking country in South America, they said. It was a country of unspoiled natural beauty, they also said. With the world slowly reopening again, I knew I had to go. Guyana is not rich, but with it's recent discovery of oil, that will be changing very soon. But I was there for the people.

Very Cool Tommy. I was just going to send you a message to suggest Guyana. If you're still there I have some friends in Georgetown who have the first hotel (Takutu Hotel) in Lethem up north in the Savannahs and near the Amazon at the end of what used to be considered the worst of all worst roads in the world. They are great hosts and can provide some fun and historical Guynese perspectives. Call the Takutu Hotel and ask to be put through to Morsha, the owner and she can set you up with some personalities and adventures. Her family is well known and connected and she used to be an attorney for the President and Prime Minister and would love to share more about Guyana.

I also know someone who Knew Jim Jones and flew the first flights into Jonestown after the massacre who has some dramatic accounts. The dynamics of the the Afro-Guyanese, Amerindian, East Indian, Chinese, British and Portuguese cultures and history include unique aspects of interdependence and even political incursions and a small scale race war.
Morsha and others can tell of when a paramilitary group of insurrectionists from Venezuela flew in and attempted to claim the area and commit genocide in the process. She and her family fled their hotel and hid under weeds in the river to avoid being slaughtered.

This is really fascinating to me. I am a white Canadian, but my family came from Guyana just before independence and settled in Canada. I heard stories about Guyana growing up and have seen photos of Georgetown back in the 1950s. Growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, I had a lot of Indo-Guyanese friends in Toronto, most of which thought it was bizarre that a white person's family could have come from Guyana, although to their parents, it was nothing out of the ordinary. Guyana was, at one time, a very very diverse nation, but I think that has changed. I would really like to visit some day. It's one of these countries that you literally hear nothing about at all - it's almost as though they are completely cut off from the rest of us. It's unfortunate - such amazing people and amazing culture.

I told many people that Guyana at one time had a white population. I grew up with white people in Guyana. My father was white and black. I even mention it on this post that at one time the white population in Guyana had swell to about 12% if you factor in the portorguese.
When blacks and Indians started to fight for political power in 1960s, white people just pack their bags and left Guyana, and the country never recover from their exodus, because they took all their money and expertise.

@@ianbynoe6515 I can't speak for all white families from Guyana, but at least for my own and for the ones I know. Most of them, while they are white, have mixed backgrounds like myself for instance - my great grandmother was an Indian who was brought over by the British. Also Portuguese, Dutch and Irish ancestry. I don't look Indian by any means, but the history of Guyana and its mixing of populations is present in my blood like it is in that of other families. I have listened to the current President of Guyana speak and from time to time, follow what's happening there. It truly appears to me as though it's a country being run by people who have no business running a furniture store, never mind a nation.

Went to Guyana back in 1995 as a project manager with a British based charity. Built a primary school way down south on the Guyana / Brazil border. The most satisfying and enjoyable experience I have had in my life. The local Chief was so impressed with his new school, he offered me his daughters hand in marriage. Stunning as she was, alas, she was only 14. Lovely people and lovely country.

Guyana has interesting places to visit, such as: Port Kaituma, (Jonestown, where the largest suicide occurred in 1978), the border town of Baramita and the shores of Shell Beach. And to the southwest in Region 7: Paruima village (where there are impressive waterfalls such as: Uchii Falls, Panacima Falls and Attabrau Falls), as well as the Amerindian villages of Phillipai and Opadai (in the vicinity of Mount Roraima) 😉

Tourists come here to visit the rainforests, waterfalls, bird watching, hiking etc. Yes tourists aren’t flocking to Georgetown but they definitely experiencing eco tourism in Guyana’s rainforests.
