    Lib Dem leader & former postal affairs Minister Sir Ed Davey has faced questioning at the Post Office inquiry over his role in the Horizon IT scandal.
    After being cross examined by Jason Beer KC, Tim Moloney KC, representing convicted sub-postmasters grills the politician.
    Mr Moloney presents Davey with a letter written by him appearing to misrepresent the case of a convicted sub-postmaster Mrs Henderson. Ed Davey agrees with the sentiment and apologises.

      Mrs Henderson had already been investigated and forced to resign from the Post Office in February 2010, three months before Ed Davey became part of David Cameron's coalition government. She was certainly wrongly convicted, but didn't go to jail; she was instead given a Community Service sentence and ordered to pay back the allegedly "stolen" money.

      @kingcurry6594 Місяць тому

      @@paultweedley2026 You clearly do not understand the relationship between Government and the Post Office. The Post Office is wholly owned by the Government: it is a public corporation in the Dept of Business and Trade. As such, the Government provides investment and subsidies as required. But it is an arms length company: the Government sets the parameters under which it functions and reviews its performance, but it does NOT take any active role in its internal operation. This is why Ed Davey was advised by civil servants that it would be inappropriate to meet Alan Bates as he could not interfere in an internal Post Office matter. He later did decide to meet Alan Bates and was the first Post office minister to do so.
      There were 6 Labour ministers before him who either were totally unaware of the Horizon issue (which had been going on since 1999) or ignored it. The basic problem for all these ministers (and those 3 Lib Dems and 8 Conservatives who came later) was the culture of denial by Fujitsu and the Post Office Executives that the Horizon system was faulty. I suspect some civil servants were also trying to hide the issue to protect the reputation and value of the Post Office.

    This shows what level of "sophistication" our system of government and law makers have achieved. Signing letters written by someone else. "Expert Witnesses" whose expertise is in cribbing information from others without any deep understanding of how what they represent actually works. Jobsworths with huge pay-packets hanging in to positions way above their true worth. Followed by an enquiry spending millions £'s more pontificating when an in depth technical course on computer operation would serve a far better purpose for the future. It was disgusting; is disgusting; and is set to remain disgusting.

      You should know this, Government asks for a report to be made on any issue (the Labour Government has just made known it will commission a report on Housing in the UK) in the UK, then Government may implement a part of any report, when things go wrong Government blames the report. This has been happening for decades in the UK Government

    Anyone who thinks something like this is a one-off should take a look at some of the testimony in the Australian Robodebt Royal Commission.
    Having worked in the Commonwealth public service I can tell you that the behavior of senior public servants in the UK and Australia is identical.
    Take a big problem to them and you will more often than not hear "if you can't do the job I'll find someone who can", which is a thinly veiled sacking threat.
    It's not the system that's at fault, it's the type of people selected for senior positions who don't know how to change a bad system. They would rather make people work around the problems than change them.

    Once again we have a cowardly politician trying to cover his tracks. In this case Davey not only claims, 'not me gov!' He tries to spread blame and then goes full on blaming civil servants and Post Office bosses. Someone should tell him that he as an elected official was the person with the real power. But he couldn't be bothered at the time because it involved cases of individuals with no influence and little pull with those in power. It is nothing short of criminal negligence. He is as bad if not worse than the Post Office bosses who he is trying to blame. Davey should be facing jail time to match that endured by the innocent PO workers.
