  • In light of the ongoing controversy and recent broadcasts shedding light on the Post Office scandal, James O'Brien hears from former postal minister and Liberal Democrats Leader, Sir Ed Davey, who apologies for his role in the scandal.
    Davey admits his regret at not meeting Alan Bates earlier and concedes he failed to uncover lies from the Post Office, specifically regarding the Horizon Computer System and remote access capabilities.
    This apology comes after Bates described his compensation offer from the government as "cruel" and "offensive" - stressing that it's only "around a sixth" of what he requested.

    An apology from Ed Davey at this stage is far too late. However, he wasn't the only minister to do nothing to help the postmasters and mistresses, this scandal involves ministers, civil servants, various post office hierarchy over many years, and Fujitsu. I sincerely hope that at some stage justice will be done, and prosecutions will hold those responsible to account.

      Panorama did a documentary in 2015. David Cameron stood up in Parliament that year and pledge to deal with the issue. This has been out there for years. I must point out one thing though. Although Blair cleared the £1Billion cheque for the new software, the scandal only really begun to break in 2009. This was only being picked up by Private Eye and Computer Weekly in the last couple of years of the Labour stint in power. This has been known about throughout the WHOLE of the 14 years of Tory government and nothing has been done.
      The Post Office are still in the position of having paid many people "compensation" that amounts to a fraction of the money they stole from the sub-postmasters under false pretences and with the aid of blackmail and threats with menaces. These are CRIMES and all involved should absolutely be serving jail sentences. There should also be MASSIVE financial penalties. But we know there will never be justice. The system, whether under Tory or Labour control, will drag this out until even more victims have died while waiting. At the moment they are still exonerrating individuals one at a time. NO! They should stop all individual actions and declare ALL prosecutions carried out with the aid of people like Ed Davey are null and void immediately. They can sort out the technical nuts and bolts later. But, I doubt there will ever be true accountability. There never is for the rule makers and big organisations.

  • @bluebrakes
    @bluebrakes 4 місяці тому +26

    So let me get this straight; A sub postmaster, and one that represents a large group of people writes to you to say that the Post Office are wrongfully prosecuting people. And that a computer system is to blame, and you rely on the word of the Post Office that they are providing all the facts truthfully. It's like saying a burglar broke into my house, reporting it to the police and they say "case closed, burglar says he didn't do it.".

    Yes, it’s desperation and he needs to step down as leader of the Lib Dem’s. Two further points I’ll make are, 1. James went really easy on him, I get it James dislikes the Conservatives more and knows tactical voting will be huge at the next election and 2. Ed Davey would not be on LBC and other news channels if he was receiving positive reviews from his constituents and others in marginal seats across the country, so a bit of a white lie at the end of the interview and is that what you want from your politicians…

    • @clivet3252

      Of course he went easy on him. They're part of the same centrist gang. He even gave him the opportunity to suggest the Tory media are making him a scapegoat. The reason the spotlight is on him is because he is the only one who is the leader of a political party. And he is a massive hypocrite. Why didn't he ask him if he hates the Tories so much why did he put them in power and accept a knighthood as a reward?

    Davey was the first minister to meet with Bates but he is being dragged through the press like this is all his fault. Ridiculous. Scapegoat comes to mind.

    I contacted Jo Swinson at the start of 2013 (I think that’s the timing) when she was post office minister. My friend in Glasgow had suffered, lost his job, his reputation, lost money etc. I got a standard email back from a minion but nothing further. Clearly she wasn’t interested

James was far too easy and let him get away with far too much. All he talks about is how “He” was lied to. Almost like he is the victim?!

    Sir Ed Davy's silence, as much as his possible culpability in the Post Office Horizon scandal, is a stain on his record, not just as a politician but as a human being.
    I think this apology has come too late. It cannot achieve what a much earlier apology might have done. Lives and livelihoods were lost. Set against this, his loss of reputation - which remains - is as nothing.
