Talking about theater, Michael Caine wrote about how it came down to him and another guy for the role of Bill Sykes in the London production of "Oliver!". The other guy got the job. Four years later, Caine drove by the theater in a limo. He was an international movie star, was well on his way to becoming a millionaire, and the guy he lost out to was still playing Bill Sykes eight times a week.
+cammameil There was an evolution. Starge SG1 did it towards the end more and more. Buffy the Vampire slayer did it more or less the same time as DS9. Babylon 5 did it even before any of those. X-Files too. Always with heavy presence of the "monster of the week" sprinkled here and there, more in some than others. But then it came out of the sci-fi fantasy genre with Shield and Sopranos. And then it became mainstream.

DS9 and BSG had the same formula years before Mad Men.
