Absolutely LOVE this format. I think it tops every form of cultural experience. The people, their stories, the food, the history, all in one Video. Please please make this a long format. I'd watch it completely :) טוב מאוד
I am going to Israel in 3 weeks for business and family.I go so often I sometimes have no time for the beach,Kotel or a shuk. After watching this,I’ll make time.
My mouth is watering! What an excellent video - this is making me want to run to the shuk for dinner right now!

My grandpa was from the Balkans! His father is a greek sephardic jew who arrived in Mexico during the early 1900's from Crete! So mom ended up looking very greek-jewish, I ended up inheriting more of my grandmas algerian-yemenite admixture though haha!
Oh yeah, my grandmother came from france during the second french intervention of mexico! There's tons of Algerian jews in Mexico, and nobody talks about them!!

Yirimiyahu - Your video “Are Jews White?” CHANGED MY LIFE!!! Sadiq!!! Amy Tarsis
The food in Israel is some of the best in the world. Still had the best chicken schnitzel ever in Haifa
Where in Haifa? I live nearby😉
Ya'll have no culture you just take it from others
I loved going to Machane Yehuda Market when I was living in Jerusalem. Jachnun's Malawach was my go-to meal, and across from their stall is a great bar!
Loved this video, thank you!
I am absolutely in love with your topics. I love you too. But I love this what you bring what you show us what you teach. I am so proud to be a Jew but you add the zest for me. Thsnk you. I am a little late but I eish you and love ones a healthy and joyful Shana Tova . Am Yisroel Chai .
Can’t wait to try Jachnun!!!
Everything looks so enticing. Yum😋
This is one of my favorite things I did when I visited Israel 🇮🇱! I loved the food so much! 😊
Another case of, They tried to kill us! We won! lets eat!
Won't deny it. The food is calling to me.
you always do such a good job with your videos. And there's something about you that reminds me a little of Alex Rodriguez, the retired baseball player.
TO UNPACKED: This was a tasty video. But I also enjoyed Yirmiyahu’s short history lessons, with the illustrations shown by UNPACKED. Well done! Nice way to integrate some history with the culture and food. Well done!
No one questions the authenticity of foods in the new world countries like they do with Israeli food. E.g. the US, Mexico, etc, are never questioned for their authenticity, even though they clearly have foreign origin. Actually, mixed origin foods make them better, because you get the best of everything.
Amazing 😋

I totally agree. There's a different vibe to this video and like it!

You would be shocked to see how non jews are treated in Israel, you will regret it
A little story concerning Jews fleeing to Latin America (it doesn't have anything to do with food, sadly): this summer, I found a letter, a travel diary and plane tickets in an old travel guide book. That book was left in a box in what used to be my grandparents' summer house for a long time, and while cleaning up, throwing things out, and sorting stuff, I stumbled across it. While I couldn't decipher the handwriting in the diary, the letter and tickets gave enough info for me to research online and find who this member of my grandpa's family had been having a correspondence with. After only a few hours, I was able to connect the dots and found out the letters had been sent to a Jew who had managed to escape from the Nazis and had settled in Mexico by 1942 , where he connected with other exiles and wrote anti-Nazi articles for political magazines. The correspondence which the letter I found belongs to apparently started after the end of WW2, when the two men reconnected. I also found out that they had both been members of the Socialist party before the Nazis came to power, so that's how they knew eachother. I will make copies of all the documents I found and give them to the local Jewish museum. I've always been fascinated by the history of the diaspora and finding things like that was very exciting.
Oh hell yes, sign me up for the khachapuri.
Wow I've never heard Hebrew coming out of Yirmiyahu's mouth! y'all should let him speak more Hebrew, i love it hehe
What the best Jewish food not just some randoms fav but what is hands down the best no matter who tries it I recently seen on the news a Jewish owned restaurant was in the cross fire of protest in dt Toronto just because they were Jewish I was going there this weekend to support them because they are just trying to make a living they didn't do nothing no1 should be harassed because of someone else's else action

Great video! Next time, focus on the Vegan food in Israel..Israel has the highest per capita number of Vegans in the world. In other words, relative to the population, Israel has the highest number of Vegans and the numbers are growing and the food is AMAZING!!!!!
Vegan food is on our list!
Indeed! Also Israel is a world leader in lab grown meat and alternative protein technologies
That is not true. India is the most vegan country.
@@itseytanNo, he said Israel has more per capita, that is, as a proportion of total population. Of course India has more cumulatively, there's more than a billion people. You seem to not understand the difference between comparative percentages and total figures.
I really gotta stop watching these when I’m hungry 🤤

Hold on, Spanish Jews couldn't have cooked potatoes. Potatoes come from the New World, and Jews were expelled from Spain as Columbus set out on his voyage, to "discover" the New World.
Spanish jews existence didn’t came to a halt in 1492. We still exist and that booth specifically is owned be jews who immigrated from spain and Argentina
@deborahfreedman333 - Yemenite Jahnun and Mlawach are served with hot tomato sauce, Tomatoes too came from the new world - no way Yemenite Jews ate that after King Solomon Era, as well as Falafel (that is Egyptian) was probably not eaten by Pharaohs .Potatoes were probably brought from new world first of all by Spaniards and Tortia is a Spanish omelet with potatoes.
They are talking about new Spanish food.
Potatoes actually come from Peru and were brought to Europe and the rest of the world. They saved many European people from starving -- especially the Irish.
@@elenatramsti5176sooo inaccurate. Growing potatoes in general lowered hunger rates in europe in that time on average. BUT reliance on potatoes as main source of food is what CAUSED the famine in Ireland that took lives of so many people.
Why were they expelled so often throughout history?
Christians and Muslims also expelled each other from their countries frequently. The problem that Jews faced is they had no safe Jewish country to take refuge in, so the cycle kept continuing.
Because Jews not being Christian in a Christian country or not being a Muslim in an Muslim country is a BONE in the THROAT of both Christianity & Islam. After all, if Jesus was the real Jewish messiah, then why didn't Jews accept him as so, especially since Jews knew Jesus up close & personal.
Because non Jews are extremely intolerant. Ask women, black, LGBT, etc
Because Christians never accepted that we didn't want to believe in their Jesus or accept their Mohammed for the Muslims.

Thank you for acknowledging the cultural origins of these cuisines and not culturally appropriating them like others.
It frustrates me when I see label such as “Israeli Khumus” (it’s Hummus) or “Israeli Falafel” two typical Lebanese delicacies. I believe that such an approach is insulting to both the original culture and Israel who has so many proprietary things to give, starting from the fact that it can be a melting pot for different cultures. It’s the role of Israelis to fight for that, and stand against the current policies turning Israel into a one-flavoured state where not even all jews are accepted.
Lebanon is part of ancient, BIBLICAL Israel.
couldn't say it better myself
@@arielatz5199 there’s a huge difference between can be and is. Up until today (and it’s getting worse by the day) Israel is extremely far from being a melting pot, so you’re argument is baseless.
Plus, it’s scray how similar your agument is to that of Jacob: “if I don’t take it someone else will”. 😂
@Georgio476 - Whoever is insulted is whoever chooses to be insulted no matter the reason is, now as well as there is Colombian way of eating Arepa and Venezuelan way I guess no Colombian or Venezuelan gets insulted, We in Israel know very well that Hummus is Lebanese but there is an Israeli way to eat it so if the term "Israeli Hummus " insults somebody it will probably be insulted by nonmatter what, about Falaffel , did you know Falaffel is not Lebanese but Egyptian ? and happends to be one of most popular street foods in Israel and there is an Israeli way to eat it so there is an "Israeli Falaffel" - there are some other dishes that are oriental by origin and not eaten anywhere but Israel like "Sabbih" so it is considered Israeli (originated by Jews from Iraq and was unknown by muslim arabs in Iraq) - Usually whoever likes in a political sense to delegitimize Israel says that all those foods (Hummus, Falafel, Tahini, pita, Sabih )are Palestinian - that is the origin of the insult issues when it goes to cultural or gastronomic matters. So all that we have to fight for is just to be aware of that and be able to explain it. About all that further on you will find comments from insulted Palestinians or Pro Palestinians just to understand my point of view.
@@thesilentway1086 my friend your comparison is way off. Colombia and Venezuela are 2 countries that were founded by the same colonial power, and for the most part of their history shared the same struggles and had a common path, something that is not the case in the current context.
And no, I hate to break it to you, something can be inherently insulting, and Jews exactly know that with all the struggles they went through especially in Europe. Accordingly, you cannot dismiss anti-semitic statements for example by saying whoever is insulted chooses to be so.
Now based on your general approach, I believe it’s you who is politicizing this things. I never mentioned Palestine. I only talked about hummus and falafel (and I see your point on the claims they are Egyptian), but based on the academical and historical resources I have access to, I claim they are Lebanese (please share any other resource you might have).
Variations do actually allow for identity appropriation, with Falafel for example whether the paste is made of chickpeas only or fava beans are added makes a difference. But with Hummus I really don’t see any room for variation.
As for traditional Jewish dishes, it’s up to Israel and its different Jewish communities to culturally negotiate whether they would accept to label these dishes as Israeli or not, it’s not up to me to say, nor the general Israeli populace. For example, if Iraqi Jews in Israel (proprietors of their own cultural heritage) choose to assimilate it with the modern Israeli state's culture they are free to do so, but they also have the right to claim it as an independent heritage that them and only them have ownership to.
For me, jachnun is just a vehicle to eat zhug.

Interesting funny fact. John Ward who became Jack Birdy (aka Jack Sparrow from pirates of carribean movie) got married to a female pirate and both converted to Islam. Then they saved the Jews of Spain and Muslims using their pirate ship to save them from death and persecution carrying them to Morroco and others places. Potentially the lady husband ancestors might of been on Jack Birdys ship, what an adventure.
Also another interesting story that will explain how jews got Yemen. I listened to an Islamic Scholar who told me, two times before Prophet (swt) was born in Mecca, the Kaaba was attacked, thats why the Kaaba had to be rebuilt couple of times. The year of Elephant, when King of Yemen attacked a year in which Prophet Muhammad (saw) was born. There was previous early attack by earlier Yemeni King a hundred or two hundred years before or may be earlier. As he was about to attack the city. Some jews approached and warned him coming of a Prophet or Moshaich from the area. He converted to judasim and took some jews back to Yemen.
Ofcourse an islamic “scholar” would say that… try and find a scholar that doesn’t have an agenda of legitimizing their religion.
@@mrpont3980
What you said makes no sense. Which Rabbi does not seek to legimatise their faith because they believe its to be true and same way muslim scholars do so thus theirs nothing sinister about it or conspiracy...why can Rabbi seek to legimatise their faith but muslims scholars are not allowed???
@@Sakhan-qs2gz You are the one not making any sense. I never said you had to go to a Rabbi. Actually the opposite. I said find a scholar that DOESN'T have an agenda of legitimizing their RELIGION. Tell me... Are you a fundamentalist or just plain stupid? There is only room for religious scholars in your 'world'? By your attitude i can tell you aren't genuinly interested in truthfinding. Only confirmation of your own false believes/bias. Funny how you people always think the only way to legitimize your false believes is to mention the jews. Like that somehow legitimizes your argument. You are not the victim of (jewish) double standard (more like the perpetrators). Always with the jews argument. You lot are obsesed with jews I tell you. Let it go... you'll be a lot happier and the world would be a much better place for everyone.
There wore Jews in Yemen long before there was Islam ! Yemen once was a Jewish kingdom in the time of Solomon!! Yemenite Jews speak the most accurate dialect of Hebrew. Yemenite kings are barred in Jerusalem!! You have no idea about our history only what some Muslim man told you , you are so arrogant!!!
@@Sakhan-qs2gzbecause Quran is a copy of Torah, and because all of their holidays are about Jews , Moses mentioned 138 times in Quran , bnei Israel mentioned 48 times in Quran . That’s why !!!! Of course they are so busy bashing us since 1700 years ago , that’s another reason!
and do you know hebrew?
In 1492 the Spanish Inquisition emerged in its fullest expression of anti-Semitism. It spread to neighboring Portugal where King João II and especially Manuel I in 1496, decided to exile thousands of Jews to São Tomé, Príncipe, and Cape Verde. They were allowed to engage in trade. Free-lance traders were referred to as lançados, who were often, but not always, of Jewish origin.[5]

Machne Yehuda is a magical place
Islamic era
Edit
In the 14th century, many Moors and Jews, who were fleeing persecution in Spain, migrated south to the Timbuktu area, which was part of the Songhai Empire at that time. Among them was the Kehath (Ka'ti) family, which was descended from Ismael Jan Kot Al-yahudi of Scheida, Morocco. The sons of this prominent family founded three villages which still exist near Timbuktu -- Kirshamba, Haybomo, and Kongougara. In 1492, Askia Muhammad I came to power in the previously tolerant region of Timbuktu and decreed that Jews must convert to Islam or leave; Judaism became illegal in Mali, as it did in Catholic Spain that same year. This was based on the advice of Muhammad al-Maghili.
As the historian Leo Africanus wrote in 1526:
In Garura there were some very rich Jews. The intervention of the preacher (Muhammid al-Maghili) of Tlemcen set up the pillage of their goods, and most of them have been killed by the population. This event took place during the same year when the Jews had been expelled from Spain and Sicily by the Catholic King.
Leo Africanus further wrote:
The king (Askia) is a declared enemy of the Jews. He will not allow any to live in the city. If he hears it said that a Berber merchant frequents them or does business with them, he confiscates his goods.
