Broadcast: February 24, 1984, TV program "Ongaku no hiroba (Music Square)"
Ikuma Dan was born in 1924 in Tokyo, Japan. His father was an Italian art historian who later became a politician and businessman. Around the age of 10, he began taking piano lessons, and in the second year of high school, he composed "3 Intermezzos," his first self-taught piano piece. In the fourth year of high school, despite his father's strong opposition, he decided to pursue a career as a composer, and entered the Tokyo Music School in 1942, in the midst of World War II. In 1950, his "Symphony in A" won a special prize in a contest commemorating the 25th anniversary of NHK broadcasting, and since then he has published symphonies, operas, and many songs and choral works. Among them, his opera "Yūzuru (Twilight Heron)" has been performed nearly 500 times, including performances in Europe, America and Asia.
(From a message in the broadcast)
-The first one is by Mr. Dan, so the piece is...
Dan: "I wrote the 'Sinfonia Burlesca,' a country-style symphony, and there is a movement called 'Procession' at the very end of it. I'm going to perform a part of it."
-So, you are conducting for the first time in thirty years...
    Dan: "Yes, this piece..."
    -How are you feeling now?
Dan: "Well... 'long time no see!' (laughs)"
    -(laughs) Well, then, please...
And Mr. Akutagawa, what about Mr. Dan?
Akutagawa: "Mr. Dan has been working very hard and devotedly for the cultural exchange in China, which is now very famous. When you listen to this piece from 30 years ago, you can clearly see the flow of Chinese and Asian blood in Mr. Dan's veins..."
-Let's hear it then. For today's performance, we have the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra. Now, please...
(From the same broadcast, hosted by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi)
"Sinfonia Burlesca" is a symphony in three movements (1st movement: Mosaic, 2nd movement: Lullaby, 3rd movement: Procession), premiered at the first concert of the "Sannin no Kai (Group of 3 composers)" (Hibiya Public Hall) on January 26, 1954, conducted by the composer and performed by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and later renamed the "Sinfonia Isolana."
It is a buried masterpiece that has only been performed in its entirety at this premiere. [...] The last movement was performed again (cut version) by the composer himself in "Ongaku no hiroba," a special feature on the "Sannin no Kai."
by Shigeru Fukuda from 3SCD-0006 "Ikuma Dan: Works for Wind Orchestra Vol.2" booklet
"Sannin no Kai (Group of 3 composers)" ... A musical group formed in 1953 by Yasushi Akutagawa, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Ikuma Dan. In contrast to post-war creative groups that, for a variety of reasons, mainly presented chamber music, the group formed by these three composers, who were in the journalistic limelight at the time, presented orchestral works with orchestras in spectacular fashion. In an interview, they said as follows
"We want to be free to develop our talents without belonging to any organization or being bound by anything, and we want to actively call out and connect with the world through our compositions instead of just publishing research. For this purpose, it is more powerful to have three people together than one, and it is more reasonable to do film music, opera, ballet and more in consultation with each other, criticize each other, and stimulate each other." (Ongaku Shinbun, No. 546)
At the first concert of their works in January 1954, they presented Dan's "Sinfonia Burlesca," Mayuzumi's "Bacchanale," and Akutagawa's "Sinfonia," and thereafter gave five concerts until 1962. Some of the most representative orchestral works of postwar Japan, such as Akutagawa's "Ellora Symphony," Mayuzumi's "Nirvana Symphony," and Dan's "Silk Road," were produced at the concerts of this group.

    聴いて見たら中国というより沖縄の音階が聞こえてくる。そう意識したのかどうか、気になる。
