    Nice video....One point - I have been told that when jacking up the trailer to use the frame (not the axles). Some folks have indicated that you can damage/bend your axles by using them as a jacking point....Happy Camping !

      I have a Lance TT with Dexter axles. Like you, I initially thought the same until I went through the owners manual. Their manual states a jacking point on the axles close to the back side of the tire not the trailer frame. So, I guess one should always check the owners manual.

    I had the same problem with michelin tires. MICHELIN said it is okay to have those crack. They reimburse me the thread left that was left on tires and bought new tires. They will honor their satisfaction policy but the crack is okay to them.

    I bought a new single axle travel trailer in 2019 with 14" endurance tires dated late 2018. After 10- 12k miles best honest guess, one tire has scary severe cracking around diameter between the outside treads. Looks like it could come apart anytime. The other tire is fine. The good part is both have minimal tire wear. Changing them out today.

    I had one of those Ryobi impacts, junk. Wouldn't take the lugs off of my motorhome. Went and bought a DeWalt, awesome. I'll never buy a Ryobi tool again. The Ryobi said it had a 200ftlb torque. The lugs were torqued to 140ftlb. The DeWalt is 375ftlb. Both cordless.

    I noticed that the old tires weren't balanced, but the new ones are. I've just replaced the OEM Castle Rock tires on my Forest River trailer with GY Endurance, and I had them balanced too. Good point on not starting them with the impact ... when I went to pull the wheels (for the first time since the factory) I found one cross-threaded lug nut. I had to replace the stud and nut before I could put the wheel back on.

    I'm surprised that the cracks were considered an issue by Good year.
    That says a lot for the company. Now I have a new issue to look for on my trailer.
    I hadn't even looked for cracking on the tread area.
    Since the tires are older than the trailer it makes me wonder if they were not stored in an ideal environment.
    Just last month I bought a used trailer and bargained down the price due to the tires being 11 years old. They were Uniroyal tiger paws. One had noticeable cracking on the side wall but the other looked like a new tire! Now I need to look at the whole tire.
    I had priced several tires but most were made in China, (no way), the Goodyears were expensive but you just gave me cause to believe they are worth the extra.
    Two brands are made in Korea and were rated very high, one was named Hankook, can't remember the other.

    I have these tires and have towed my 13000 lb. fifth wheel over twenty thousand miles with no issues. Probably the best trailer tires I have owned. Good to know they are standing behind the product as well. Always use a tire monitoring system. We had a bad value stem go down going through Dallas, Fort Worth. I would not have known and probably done damage to my rig at the very least without the monitoring system. I was able to get of the interstate safely and change tires.

    Swapped out GY Endurance's on our 2020 Keystone Cougar about 3 weeks after we bought the rig. Several hundred miles down the road; one failed. Put the spare on and about 100 miles later another GY Endurance blew. Took both bad tires to a GY dealer and they said NOPE! won't warranty it. GY doesn't warranty ST tires like a passenger tire. I'm like, WTH? Both of these have less than a thousand miles. I ended up buying two more GY Endurance's to replace them. Went back to the rig and installed them. Contacted GY and they were less than helpful and assured they would NOT stand by their product. Three weeks later; I went and purchased new tires for my truck and they were NOT GY. Wife's Prius was in need of tires a month later and NOT GY's. GY has lost my business forever. Next tires on our 5th wheel and boat will be Maxxis 8008's.

    I always mark the tires as to which side of the trailer they were on and put them back on the same side. drove a semi over the road and had times new tires would start cracking or splitting even though they were new tires. that's why truckers check their tires every day. PRE TRIP.

  • @clintstinytrailerconversio5560

    Looking closely at photo :36. That isn't dry rot. Dry rot would be all over, not just in that (those) groove that run around the circumference. Dry rot doesn't work that way. What it is, is evidence of the effect of those grooves being pulled open and of course, closed while being stressed during tight turns and a not so light of a trailer. You filling the tires to maximum rated pressure might lessened the effect and something you could do, where possible, is avoid very tight turns. I would be curious if after about the same mileage you find the new set exhibiting the same "stretch" marks.

    • @TravelsAbound
      @TravelsAbound  3 роки тому +1

      When Lionshead and Goodyear say what is pictured is not supposed to happen and they send 4 free replacements within a few days, I go by what they say. Lionshead, who supplies the tire warranty, agreed that it appeared to be "dry rot". Whatever caused it, it is not right and that was the main point of this video. As for PSI, I always run max cold pressures on all of my trailer tires to reduce the folding of the tire while turning. I agree that avoiding tight turns saves tires and suspension hangers but some campsites require tight turns. We have almost 4,000 miles on the replacements and no cracks yet. Thanks for watching the video and your comment!

    I also had the same problem. 4300lbs Airstream 19' trailer, same 4 year old tires, driven about 20,000 miles, cracking visible on edges. A few days ago, while driving at 65 mph in 95 degrees, my tire exploded.
    These tires are by no means safe. In conclusion, I changed to LT tires.
    The sidewalls are stronger than other trailer tires. But the problem is the edge part. This part seems to start cracking after a year. So I never recommend itire. Go for LT tires.

    re: Your comment about Michelin. Michelin actually does allow a certain amount and size of tire checking and cracking and consider it normal. They have a letter out with pictures detailing what is acceptable and what is not. Why did you not put the jackstands under the axles BEFORE you removed the wheels?

    • @TravelsAbound
      @TravelsAbound  3 роки тому +3

      Good to know about Michelin! The nation wide tire shop that I previously asked about my Michelins cracking did not provide any of that information. Thanks!... The main weight of my camper was held up by the 4 leveling jacks (at each corner) attached to the frame. If the bottle jack would have slipped while removing the tire, the camper wouldn't have fallen or moved. Plus, I wanted to lower that side of the axles before I lifted the opposite side to reduce any extra pressure on the axles. Hope that answers your question!

    Looks like you jacked the trailer up using the axles? I was told not to do that because you can bend the tube. You should use the frame?

    • @TravelsAbound
      @TravelsAbound  3 роки тому +1

      I have received a lot of feedback on this video concerning how I used the jacks. It is my fault for not going into detail on everything I did in this video. Our camper has 4 leveling jacks attached to the frame. When removing the tires, I lift the camper by using those to take almost all of the weight off of the axles. I then use the bottle jacks to lift the axles just enough to remove the tire. The small amount of pressure is not enough to bend the axles. I choose to do it this way to keep my suspension shackles from flipping which is what they do when all of the weight is off of the axle and it is hanging in the air. It can be a pain to make them right again if this happens. I do not recommend anyone lift a trailer of any type by the axles alone. I hope this all makes sense. Thank you for watching the video!

    Why does everybody jack there trailers up on the axles instead of the frame.... Use the frame people.

    • @TravelsAbound
      @TravelsAbound  3 роки тому

      Well, I guess I should have been clear as to how I removed the tires from my camper. When doing so, I use the 4 leveling jacks attached to the frame (2 in front and 2 in rear which are visible in the video) to raise the camper several inches. I then place the bottle jack between the U bolts to lift the tire off of the ground just enough to remove it. I choose to do it this way so my shackles don't flip. I also don't recommend that people "jack their trailers up on the axles" but to each their own. Thank you for watching the video!

    • @davidgates1122
      @davidgates1122 3 роки тому

      If you know what you are doing and have the right equipment, it is safer on the bigger trailers to jack from under the axles. I made an adapter for my jack so that I can jack under the axle tube adjacent to the spring without fear of collapsing the axle tube. I barely get the tire off of the ground so that I do not exceed the travel of the equalizer. This prevents overloading the suspension. Jacking under the frame can result in lifting both tires on a tandem at the same time, which places three times the stress on the frame that it normally has. Unfortunately, I have seen virtually no one jack up a trailer without risking damage to the trailer, and this includes so called professionals. Most professionals, if they have any training at all is in the auto repair industry. Jacking up a car or truck is a different thing than jacking a tandem axle trailer. Single axle trailers are much more forgiving.
