We have six tandem axle and one triple axle trailer on our farm. Thirty tires on the ground, a spare for each and another 10 or 12 in the service rack. Everyone of them is a Carlisle HD, identical tires and wheels. We have a full time mechanic on the farm who has been with us for 20 years. In 2022 I had to make several trips from southern Michigan to central Florida with one of our enclosed car haulers, about 2400 miles round trip. On the sixth trip back to MI I noticed a slight vibration. Stopped to check the tires, get fuel and dinner. Saw nothing wrong with the tires. Pulled back onto the highway and thought the world had come to an end - the trailer was actually bouncing up and down on a smooth interstate. Got it pulled over and found that the tread had separated on one of the trailer tires. Got it changed and continued home. Had our mechanic check it out. Turns out that tire and one other on that trailer were 16 years old with about 45K on them. I had put over 14K on them in the last eight months. Somehow two tires had managed to stay in service 16 years without being caught. Bottom line is that we have run Carlisle Tires for almost 50 years and countless miles and never had an issue - except for this one we brought upon ourselves.

One thing to consider regarding tread depth. The deeper the tread, the more “block rock” your tires will have. Block rock is what happens when the actual treads flex side to side causing a sway type of feel. It’s very common when tires are brand new. As the tread wears down, the tighter it feels going down the road. This is why most ST trailer tires have around 8 to 9 32nds of tread. If you had really thick tread on a trailer tire, it would contribute to overall trailer sway. This is another reason why LT tires are a bad idea for travel trailers.

I still like the Carlisle myself but after looking at these in person and such high positive feedback from many people in the RV world well figured I would give them a shot. I was gonna get the Carlisle just from seeing them always on construction trailers and more and they get beat up.

I'm spending some time on your great YT channel Johnny. Nice review here on the tires. I too bought the made in America GY Endurance tires for my 2 trailers after doing much research. Regarding tread depth, I noticed this too. However, in my case, the tires will age out long before I ever wear them out.

    • @johnnysweekends

That is often the case with most people. It’s takes a while for the average person to burn a set of tires unless full time.

I towed from south Florida to SoCal last year. 2 years prior I towed out to lake powell from South Fl. Goodyear endurance tires , tandem axle with a donzi 22 classic. I probably put 30,000 miles on the tires over 4 years. I replaced them just because but the tread looked good to me. Usually tires will rot from the inside out and a new set of tires every 4 years is maintenance… Anyway , zero tire issues. Lol. Same set of bearings as well ! Airtight hubs and Goodyear Endurance tires ! Good stuff !

I took the Westlake Tires that come on my new TT off at 110 miles and replaced them with GY Endurances and just pulled them off at about 28.000 miles still looked pretty good but I wanted to feel OK on the next long trip, I pull at the speed limit if its 80 MPH I pull it 80 MPH, had a set of Westlake's on a another trailer and lost 2 of them before I wised up!! One time it cost about 1,900 dollars in repairs to that trailer and a 250.00 dollar service call out in the Mojave Desert.

Another well regarded tire is the Sailun S637. It is a G (up to 110psi) rated tire but can be run at lower pressures on lighter trailers. It has a reputation for being extra tough and it is used commercially on trailers. Should be used with wheels designed to handle that pressure. I currently have GY Endurance on my 15K 5th wheel and they've held up fine, coming up on their fourth year. OE tire on it were the GY Marathon which were fine until a gigantic bulge developed in a sidewall. Pretty scary, avoided disaster by catching it before a return trip, having the spare installed. I've seen the damage blowouts can cause and I hope to never go through that myself.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 роки тому

Yes I don’t won’t a blowout as well so about 4 years max depending on conditions.
And yes I looked at the Sailuns but jump in price plus I would have needed new rims for those tires I guess. So the GY E rated endurance which is what my trailer needs anyway was a good fit. So far they are doing great and as long as they don’t change who manufactures them or the material I think these will sell well for 10 years till the next best thing comes along.
Thanks for the comment and thanks again for watching 👍🏼😀

Good comparison and it’s Goodyear for me!! After having a blowout with the stock “bombs” on a 100 degree day in north Texas, I wanted peace of mind! Luckily I had Tireminders installed, so I knew the instant the tire blew and got off the road without wheel damage. Those Endurance tires looked good in the store. You did a great review, I had Trailer King RST 205/75R15’s on my new Travel Trailer. I also did some higher mileage on the TK’s at about 6000 miles and most of that was one trip out west and it was over 100 degrees most of our driving. They did a good job and did look new when I took them off. I just do not trust them past that. I went to a 225/75R15’s 10 ply E rated tire and did go with American made Carlisle’s HD with a March 2021 code. I did have a problem with premature cracking on my last set of GY Endurance Tires and they did have a issue. I’ll stick with my Carlisle’s and on the ranch it’s all we use. Even though they are now off shore as of April I believe. I know GY did rectify their problem but I was taken back by the tire shop not believing their was a problem with the Endurance tires. They did try and replace them after I contacted GY. The shop tried to make me pay for mounting and balancing and get this tire disposal fee on the bad GY’s Needless to say I did keep them and took my business else where and only use Carlisle’s now. I love the tread pattern and they do have a better ride and that is just my opinion
I believe the only safe travel trailer tires are the GY, Carlisle’s and my favorite if in stock, The Maxxis M8008 10 ply E rated tire. I just could not get them.

But having look at the Goodyear up close which actually I’m not a fan of GY I decided they seem like the better tire. And of course from how man they sell, to the reviews and also allot of the airstream groups use them and some of them pack on some miles. So what the heck I’ll try them out. I look at my stuff religiously so hopefully see a problem before it turns into one.

I did look but for the normal recreational person it’s probably not a good choice. They can’t handle the hard jack knife turns because of the really soft side walls. So they can end up folding and pop off a rim.
Also most the time the same size tire and load in a LT will not have the load rating a ST tire has. So you get more carrying capacity with a true ST tire vs LT tire.

So if I'm hearing correctly, you got 4 years out of your OEM Trailer King tires. How many miles would you say you got out of them? Did you ever have any problems with them? My current 7500 lb GVW travel trailer has Trailer Kings. I had them previously on a 4,000 GVW trailer and put 3,000 miles on them with zero issues. On the Facebook group for my trailer, there are many folks who say they are crap and need to be replaced immediately. I'm just trying to get a gauge on how yours did over the 4 years you used them.

    • @johnnysweekends

They will be 4 years old in October. And in the video i mentioned I have about 7000 miles on them. Im the second owner of the trailer which is a early 2018 model so it came out in fall of I guess …??? The previous owner only used it 3 times and put about 500-1000 miles at most he thought.
I also went over a lot of rough roads to the coast from California so they are not easy miles.
These are also E load tires.
I check the air every time I left for a trip and inspected every stop doing a walk around.
My trailer also tows great so I assume I have weight distribution down pretty good and straight axles.
I agree everyone says get rid of the China bombs….. but I decided to keep them and keep a close eye. I said 3.5 to 4 years max or 10k miles. Well it’s over 3.5 years now so I swapped.
I think they looked great and even the tire shop said they looked fine. Probably could have done one more year.
Like most things we only hear the worst most times on FB and not enough good. Same as a truck.
I just started a FB group to but it’s small so not much for negative feedback yet so that’s good…🤣🤣

@@johnnysweekends Very good info. Thanks for sharing. I check pressure every time I tow and keep it at the manufacturer recommended pressure (not tire max pressure). I've never had an issue and I've towed over some crappy roads in 100 degree plus temps. I'm also keeping my speed below the tire rating (81 mph). I typically drive 60-70. That showed the difference in overall strength. That is why the goodyear weighed five pounds more.

Tires came off...then inside for the new rubber...and then came back out. Watched the first tire go on and saw that they had not been balanced. Had to get the mgr out of his office to get the balancing done. He assured me that "trailer tires don't need balancing". For optimum performance- yes, yes they do! Anyway, the tires went back inside for balancing and then out again and were installed. 10k on them now and they look great with even wear. Usually run 75-80 psi. 1 question and one comment-
You said the Goodyear held air better than the Carlisle and you’d explain. Why does it hold air better?
If you believe a tire salesman, he puts weight on the two tires and says the Carlisle is softer so its not as good. At the end you say the trailer is a little stiffer than you’d like.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  3 роки тому +1

The tire from Goodyear supposedly holds air better due to the new inner liner technology. It resists air pressure losses while sitting and adverse highway bumps and potholes. So I said will see how they will do.
The squish test he did was interesting, I performed the same test and it was so much easier the press down on the Carlisle verses Goodyear. I did compress the Goodyear but it took twice maybe three time the force. And having both tires side by side you could tell the Goodyear just looked like it was put together better.
The trailer being stiffer, I never said I didn’t like it, I could just feel it more then before. Now with the tires being new like mentioned they may soften a little. And my trailer was also pretty empty when I went to the shop.
Although air pressure difference from old to new was minimal as when I left my house air pressure on old tires were 79 psi and 79.5 psi and new tires were 80.5 and 81 psi depending. Plus it had warmed up as the morning went. Is there that much difference in 2 psi …. Ahh minimal I would think.
Hope this clarifies a little for you.
