So this is one of the videos I pulled into from on my pistons video on my M8 motor … been traveling for my mothers funeral and meant to post this the other day …
DV

Just like an ego maniac to deflect some constructive criticism. Just another arrogant douchebag.
👍
Sorry for the loss of your mother 💔
Awesome video brother👍. Ya that’s a little shocking to crack open a motor at 500 miles and see that type of a build up.
You did a great job of breaking down why and how DV and that's why I love your CHANNEL !
Awesome! Thank you!
They run lean from the factory. Hence changing to wide band O2 sensors to allow more variance in the AFR ratio. More variance allows more fuel, Please get that right.
Please educate me … I consulted multiple sources prior to uploading this video … not trying to be a wise guy but this comment might help someone else in the community
@@DeterminedVeteran Hes right they run lean from the factory not rich!
@@hellonwheels1332 DK has dyno videos showing M8 not running lean from factory...
M8's are not lean from the factory
Here is something you might be interested DK customs did a video last year about it ua-cam.com/video/aWW-nt7-fzA/v-deo.html
I installed the Trask transmission cover breather... I also installed the DK Customs external breathers. Both done with 18 miles on bike. I run Amsoil Quickshot and their octane booster. The Quickshot deals with ethanol problems and booster deals with poor gas.
The last year has been so eye opening with my CVO. 1st time here. New subscriber. Thanks
Excellent video! I’ve actually talked to HD owners who are animate that they DONT need a breather mod. All of the carbon buildup on that new engine is due to the oily mist being pumped back into the combustion chamber in order to meet EPA regs.
I seen the same videos and thought the same thing. From one dv to another dv, put out the right way the motor isn't where you want to go cheap and blow it up. That's a good chunk of change to replace a motor.
I surely will my friend ! Trust me I WILL …
DK custom came out with a new product. The transformer. It has two options built into it. It allows you to have external breather system or recirculate back into intake for epa compliance. It cleans up the look. I already have the trask checkm8 vented trans cover. That was also worth it. More miles more smiles.
Now, if Polaris (I mean Indian) would stop trying to imitate and copy Harley Davidson's style & design and come up with something original of their own, then they might really have something!!!
Excellent video as usual. I try and run non ethanol gas and will probably run a vent of some sort on the new 114 once I do an obscene amount of research
Much obliged ! Appreciate the feedback we will be showing you all some options to vent to atmosphere … tons of kits out there
I thought this was a byproduct of oil blowby, where the excess oil in the heads gets sent through the air filter to be burned inside of the engine. Blowby is also an EPA thing but I also thought harleys ran lean for the epa, not rich idk
Yes all bike are tuned lean for EPA regs to me it looks like he might have a sumping issue I would like to know how much oil they found in the crankcase M8 are known for bad piston squiters that will fill a crankcase with oil
ua-cam.com/video/U8ICay7wz8s/v-deo.html
Right on, thanks for the video. I usually add additives to my fuel. Having two bikes I do it since one sits longer when I’m traveling.
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
What additives do you use?
Blockhead DID release the psi with the grind area in the trans. That hose they put in did nothing with the psi, but it did spit oil back into the oil instead of in the combustion chamber.
@@amberbali8881 His issue with Blockheads is that it is not vented. It only redirects misty oil and pressure back into a different area of the crankcase but still does not reduce case pressure as there is no venting at all
Psstt, plastic transmission cover not the aluminum case. 1/8" drill bit. Problem solved.. idea was great though.. same result no metal shavings.
@@bradbaker9269
Ok, I understand the problem (I am Spaniard)
I have a 2007 Road king, I put external breather to head block and the experience was oil flow out trough the gasket (in rear specially)
I go back with the breathing and the oil flow stop.
I understood, pistons are vacuum cleaners and it is necessary let them be.
Thanks a lot
Note: my bike and me are joined 213,338 kilometers and very happy for this
Good thing that you’re building it better stronger newer parts 🙌🏾
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
I always thought these bikes ran lean 🤯, maybe I misunderstood the fuel ratios(maybe it's low and high rpm). Lots of great info, looking forward to the 131 RG.
Hey what’s good my man !!! The whole lean v rich is a heavily debated topic and it would depend on the person based upon their experience to say either …
Thanks for watching ! See you in the comment section In future uploads !

@@DeterminedVeteran The New bikes are LEAN!
I bought a used 2018 fatboy 114 and now upgrading to a S&S 128 big bore my pistons were caked with carbon I'm definitely bypassing the breather bolts also
This is the best video on the issues with the M8 I’ve seen as of yet DV !
Thank you my friend !
Consider watching Kevin Baxter. He is a renown engine builder in Georgia that takes the issues of the M8 to a new level.
I externally vented the heads and crankcase on my 2016RGS with 543 fueling cam setup.
We have some plans in future content Stay TUNED
Awesome video bro, so informative! I’m glad someone knows their stuff! 💯🤙🔥
Thank you brother
Kevin Baxter has some great content on the M8. There are multiple things that can occur and must be checked to make sure your expensive HD engine is healthy.
Yeah he does and DK customs ! Thanks for watching !!
Bcos he knows they are worthless trash from the factory
Need to point out, "everything", Twin cams for sure do not come from the factory running rich, also this carbon build up might due to overfilling of the engine oil.. but then remember the crank case vents back into the intake too.. this will contribute to carbon build up
Fueling vented dipstick did the trick for me on my 2020 softail. Getting another one for my new road glide tomorrow. Barely over 300 miles on it. If your bike had this at 500 some miles, thank God it gets here tomorrow.
Absolutely! We will be installing it soon ! Thanks for tuning in on this upload ! When you have a chance consider checking out of content to see if we are the right fit for you
Hope to see you in the comment section on our future uploads

What is the fueling vented dipstick? I pick my 23 RG up in cpl weeks
You know if have to do all that pre-maintenance when you beef it up than my opinion is that a stock Harley is not meant to be built to a 131. If I want speed and torque I’ll buy a sports bike. Harley Davidson is not a performance bike.
Great content! I appreciate you bringing this issue to light. Can you also speak about the corrections & pricing on all upgrades.
Thank you!
Stage 4 kit was roughly 4K I did buy an upgraded clutch as well but at this point haven’t installed it yet … thanks for tuning in hope to see you in the comment section in future uploads

@@DeterminedVeterandid we ever get to see the comparison?
How is overall engine reliability with the 114 engine/ I have a totally stock 2021 Street Bob and may only put Slip On exhaust in the near future but will keep the engine box stock other than slip ons and maybe free flow air cleaner...
Those look bad…. I’m so excited for warmer weather to ride!!! 🏍💪🏼🔥🏍💪🏼🔥
You and me both!
When you were talking about gas. I put either 87 or 89 non ethonal gas in mine. I can't find 90 non ethonal. I have put 90 non ethonal gas in my truck and suburban. Both of them get great gas mileage.
Thank you for all of this helpful and interesting information!!
Glad it was helpful!
You are talking way over my pay grade but I get the Gist of it thank you for educating me .
But did you learn something 😉
Yes, you would think spending thousands of dollars over the cost of comparable motorcycles you’d be getting a premium product that rides well and reliable right from the factory. I don’t understand this constant desire to work or rebuild on brand new machines.
Just when we thought the sumping issues were corrected on the later 2021 M8 engines, this is found.
Yuup … oh yeah and the sumping issues will be discussed in a future upload when we correct the blow by issue on Vader …. Stay tuned
Dr. DV I miss Sunoco 94 but I guess that why I did the breather mod on my air intake and my transmission!! Great video
Thanks Brother ! Dr DV 😂
This is stuff that worries me about Harley bikes. I really do like them but i got my sporty last year and i just learned about tire dates. (My bikes tires were 9 years old off the truck. I just recently noticed the bike making a strange vibration anytime i am just a few degrees off of being straight up) EDIT: I was wrong I wasn't looking at right spot for the date looks liek they're only a year or two old. That being said I still am experiencing some sort of vibration when leaning for some reason.
Now I am super interested in the low rider st and hearing this about the M8 I wonder what extra stuff I will need to buy to make it run the best it can for longevity. I want it to be pretty much the last bike I buy for a long time. I don’t mind tinkering and learning.
Thanks for giving the heads up!
Very informative video! I had a Stage 2 Torque Cam installed before I took delivery of my 17 RGS. Did having the SE tuner on it from the start help to avoid much, or any, of that damage from it running rich?
So when we pulled these pistons and heads the bike was stock , since then we’ve installed the 131 kit and I’m about to do my first service on the bike at that point I’ll stick a scope down and check the pistons and heads
Thanks for watching hope to see you in the comment section on a future upload
i have my crankcase vented to atmosphere at the engine and the oil tank. with a twin cool it's easy and cheap. with an oil cooled it's a bit different. but it can still be done without dropping 300 bucks on some of these kits. i did mine during my cam chest upgrade. then did a round trip from Ohio to Cali. no issues and she ran great.
I just bought a 21 road glide special last sept with 6 miles on it. Glad I found your channel brotha 🤙🏾

Exactly. If only they'd engineer things corretly the first time.....
In Harley's defenst the new Revolution X engine really seems to be geared toward LESS dealer maintenance. It's the engine Harley should have built LONG ago.
But the Harley faithful are all about "Muh pushrods and air cooled!!!!"

Just ordered my first M8 road glide st two weeks ago. Coming from the twin cam world im a bit nervous but excited at the same time! Love your content and this one was very interesting. Curious to see if they would have been better or worse after 1000 miles? Keep up the good work man, can't wait to see the finished product!

Don't be nervous. I was coming from riding Metric , which are for the most part bullet proof. Bought my first HD last March. I took the Road Glide on a 700 mile trip the first week, came back did the 1000 mile service myself. A couple of months later did a 2900 mile road trip over 10 days and the M8 107 motor performed flawlessly. I just did a stage 1 kit and she runs even better now. 9000 miles on the clock in 11 months.
I’ve put at least 100k on an M8.
You’ll be fine. Tune the bike and it will be fine. I used the SE tuner. The bike runs great.
Check Kevin Baxter on you tube and he explains it best.
I have a twin cam 103 and the M8 114. I think you will really enjoy the M8. Great torque and the 114 pulls pretty hard through all the gears. Ride safe.👊👍🇺🇸
Ive been on a short stroke 88 road king with a 95 kit for so long and honestly have not ridden a 6 speed yet. I told myself i wouldn't buy a new bike but I have fallen in love with this raod glide. Im sure I'll love it and the road ki g is staying with me of course. It makes alot of guys mad that have a 110 twin cam!
its the ethenol in your fuel, make your own non e at home, i do it for all my bikes, gotta bump the octane back up though
You are incorrect on the fuel mixture! They are lean from the factory. What you are seeing on the M8 is oil from the breathers being recycled back into the engine to reburn the vapors to lower the emissions.
Harley has had trouble with the M8 crank case venting and sumping oil into the breather. The M8 was built for EPA regulations.
Bam thanks for your input on this upload ! I definitely didn’t catch that part where I had a mistake when I edited this video !!
Hope to see more from you in our future uploads

You as well bro !
My new 2023 114 is sitting at the dealer getting cylinders, pistons and valves @900 miles. What a waste of money.
If you want a good motor you need to put timken taper bearings on a Darkhorse crankshaft.
Mine is a 2022 road glide with 1000 miles on it I notice sometimes when I’m ridding it makes a fire cracker pop randomly, wonder if it’s a combustion issue related to what you mentioned on this video, anything to pay attention to? Will subscribe right now.
I’m waiting on my boroscope to examine the motor to check it out
Since it’s under warranty I’m not worried too much there are several issues that contribute to the issue
Great. Video brotha. Informative and easy to follow. 💪 keep it up 👍

Would HD warranty those heads and pistons?
Well I haven't reach 500 miles yet on my break in. The only gas so far has been QT supposed to be gerunteed
I would like to vent my crank case pressure. I'd like a transmission top vent? Can't really afford that right now. Not sure if the other two options are any good. Dipstick, or air breather can thing. I have 2020 SGS 114. ?????

Hey man I have a 21 road glide with around 25 miles on it. I’m looking to either get trask vent cover or a fueling vented dipstick? What do you recommend? I was considering a catch can
I’m currently testing out a few products in order to make a video addressing that subject
131 guy hear. That's from your Harley blow by. You need the Trask transmission cover to vent everything correctly. Ride safe
Ride safe as well! One of our sponsors Mad Monkey Motorsports sent me their ventilation kit ! I’ll be installing very soon here on the channel
This is only the second video I've watched of yours. Great content. I definitely learned some things about my new Road Glide Special. You stated they all run rich from the factory, well that's just the opposite of a twin cam harley. My twin cam had a harley davidson screaming eagle big bore kit with a screaming eagle tune on the factory ecm and it was super lean. My bike builder says that's the norm on all twin cams.
Now that I've probably wasted your time with all that babbling, I plan on leaving my 114 m8 stock until the warranty is up. What are some things I can do to ensure that my motor stays healthy? Thanks!
Well thanks my friend for returning and being apart of the discussion on this post ! I would definitely say crank case ventilation is a must ! I had a 17 107 Gen 1 Milwaukee 8 and I went through 3 oil pumps on that motor in 35k miles … they’re good motors but the EPA standards are hell on all manufactures
Hopefully that helps stay tuned for more content we are going to build the ultimate bagger !

I run the Trask Transmission Plate Cover to ventilate the bottom end (crankcase) on my Harleys. Previous to the excellent Trask piece, I had run a Fueling Billet Vented Oil Dipstick (which worked fine) to ventilate the crankcase (SGS w/SE Stage-4 117). I'm still researching into ventilating the top end. Right now, I'm leaning towards using some pieces from S&S to replace, then connect both Head Breather Bolts into one discharge/ventilation line, then to a catch can. T-Man Performance has a killer catch can (for Touring chassis) that mounts inside the rear of the bike, right side, shaped to fit into the frame (details on their videos). I've never had any issues with oil accumulation in my air cleaner. Tom M., Hawthorne CA. '21 RGS & '22 FXLRS (my 4-wheel ride: '21 Challenger SP/WB)
I’m definitely planning on installing that on Vader at some point !
If you vent the crankcase via with dipstick or Trans cover, do not also vent the breather bolts. If you do both, you create a vacuum issues with them working against each other. If you have the Trask, I’d leave it with that. You should notice significantly less oil build-up in the collector of your air intake.
Agreed However all my contacts are saying to vent from the breather bolts but I’m cautious on doing that … we will eventually show a good solution at an affordable cost
@@DeterminedVeteran I didn’t say don’t do it, I said don’t do both a transmission vent (dipstick or top case) and a breather bolt vent. It’s an enclosed system, so if you have two vents with opposing direction of airflow, then the vacuum circulating the system will be insufficient.
Okay, I’m in. Let’s see what you got.
Great video thanks for the info looking forward to next one see you in the next one
Thank you sir !
I'm waiting for my order bike to arrive at the dealer w/m8-117 motor. What fuel should I be running??? and how long is the break in period???
Always use either 91,93 or 94 depending upon the region you’re in … 500 miles break in and after a 1k send it … of course always consult your owners manual for specific details

I hit 100+mph weekly and agressively and blow the carbon out.

I did my own catch can/head breather set up, but what is it you did not like from Blkhead?
Cheaply done IMHO much better ways of doing it their set up will not last
So what size vent hose we talking
Great JOB DV ! You def know your stuff !
I appreciate that!
First of all donation is not caused by too much fuel Low octane in too much timing causes detonation. Synthetic oils getting inside your cylinders is what made those it does not burn it just gets hotter. want to solve it Little bit Mystery oil every time you fill your tank
There are several factors to what caused it obviously I’m not perfect and should of discussed more of the oil sumpting issue due to poor ventilation we shall discuss this topic more in a future upload
Is it beneficial to add a tad of mystery oil in fuel tank, overall?

What are you going to do for crank case ventilation?
Great question ! Not sure yet I’ll keep you all posted
Nice Vid but now I'm nervous I just bought a 2021 Ultra Limited in November it has 65 miles on it I live in Michigan so no riding for a couple months yet. No need to be nervous it is a great motor despite some issues like all motors have … I owned a 17 Gen 1 M8 with the 107 and went thru 3 oil pumps and we had to crack the motor on it as well …

@@DeterminedVeteran I am subscribed. Thanks for the info I'll be watching.
What do you suggest for the crank case ventilation?
an IV bag and a line of cocaine
That would be from oil.ie rings, valve seals, breathers in the heads, bad engine from the factory, did they do a leak down test?intake all oily?
Yes oil sumping is separate issue , yes we did a leak down And compression on the motor build
I would recommend a vented trans cover before a dipstik if you are going that route. My experience with vented dipstiks is unless you run the bike 1/2-3/4 of a quart low on oil it will cover your bike in oil.
The deposits on the pistons is oil not fuel.
The carbon deposits on the heads is because the bike was started and never let to warm up before it was tore down.
The factory injection is not set to run rich. EPA slapped Harley really hard for doing that and they are not going to go through that again.
Before you link the DJ hacks video keep in mind they think everyone who is not willing to void their warranty as morons.
Kevin Baxter explains this in much greater detail and has done the actual research and development.
It’s wild how people are still surprised about the blowback and the deposits when this has been known for years. I have the dipstick and run oil right where it needs and don’t have an issue at all. Another person said they had your problem but they were told to upgrade to the 2020 hd pump and plate and it corrected the issue, unsure your year.
@@ICEMANINVADER Blow by and Harleys has always been an issue. Nature of the beast.
They upgraged the pumps in 19 and my bike is a 21. It is also a Softail and Fueling says to run the bike 1/2-3/4 of a quart low on the softails. Not comfortable with doing that on an air/oil cooled bike.
With the Trask trans cover I can run at the full mark with no issues.
@@rollandklontz yeah they were the ones who said to upgrade the pump and plate that was tourings though I’d assume HD did the same for the soft tails. Vent issues are prevelant on every motor with EPA regs. Had 3 brand new trucks that i used catch cans from the PCV and the amount of oil was nuts. The trask is defn the best option if the dipsticks and other catch can setups don’t work. I might add it too just to have.
@@ICEMANINVADER The Trask cover is a nice piece. Better option than the dipstick.
The fueling dipstick is nice and looks great its just a shame it doesnt work as good on m8 softails as it does the m8 touring models.
The issue with the pistons in the video however is crap getting sucked through the throttle body which will still happen to some extent no matter how you vent the crankcase.
@@rollandklontzwhat’s the difference between the softtails and touring models that allow better use of the vented dip stick?
Looks more like oil blow by carbon deposits on the pistons due to the crank case breather blowing hot oily mist back into the combustion chamber. I was under the impression detonation was cause in a lean air / fuel mixture or using too low of an octane gas.
Lean mixture or improper timing.
I will be making a follow up on this when I discuss tuning eventually... thanks for your input... hope to see you again in the comment section in future uploads
You are correct . This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. It has nothing to with fuel. It's oil.

@@DeterminedVeteran Outstanding. My bike did seem to run better after the tune and breather change to the stage 1. I saw thos $12 mods but wasnt convinced I should be doing that if its a mixture issue.
I don't do other social media but I just wanna say how glad am I found your channel. I love your content and I love how you interact with your fans. most content providers dont bother replying to comments. Huge SALUTE to you Sarge.
What is a real solution to the venting issue that HARLEY has going back into the intake ?
Venting - some type of crank case ventilation product I’m currently testing one at the moment
Blow by - catch can system which is routed from the blow by bolts to a can DONT route to the trans
Aw man I know you said especially the 114 M8 I just bought a 2022 Street Glide CVO 117. I take it that’s just as susceptible?
You’ll have the same issues but then again you have a 2 year factory warranty from HD they stand behind their products … if that makes sense
Thanks brother! I’m not quite the do it yourselfer like you. Especially on engines. I hate to sound stupid but should Harley or should I have them checking this problem at every service? Or now that this is a possible issue will they automatically? Thanks for all your help. Love the content & the way you bring it . Keep the rubber side down. Thanks again!
In Europe all bikes are lean from the factory to pass emissions
New to channel!! Subscribed. do u recommend a tuner?? Just got 2022 low rider s. Screaming eagle tuner???
So keep an eye on our 131 build series … but I’m using all SE on my build
Welcome to the channel ! We put out a ton of motorcycle content … we just released a new upload ! Hope to see you again

Dude you made my head hurt, you were all over the map with your description of the problem with your engine. So how do you tune it to correct the problem? Many issues.
😂
Hello great video just bought a 2022 with 1 mile last weekend ultra limited I seen the first comment said that it is oil buildup do you agree with that and would a stage four kit fix this problem please comment me back
I have a video of me taking a bore scope to my 131 you might find interesting it’s on my Perfomance bagger playlist hopefully that video answers your questions
Excellent video! Keystone is only minutes from my house lol
Right on my friend maybe one day our paths will cross … appreciate you stopping by the channel and hope to see you in the comment section in a future upload

Would this also be a problem in a Twin Cam 103?
Great question all small motors or motors in general will have carbon build up , on a TC it was vented to atmosphere where the M8 isn’t due to EPA requirements
Ton of differences of opinion in today’s upload … there are 2 fatal flaws of the M8 one is blow by and the other crank ventilation …
ALSO Correction where I miss spoke, the carbon deposits come oil blow by ... fueling part of it as well , so we will obviously discuss this further in a future upload .
If I miss something let me know in the comment section

Great video I’m retired Navy and have a 2021 street glide
Thank you for your service and your feedback on this upload !
I retired from the Army back in 2016 as a E7
Hope to see you again in the comment section in future uploads !

@@DeterminedVeteran retired in 2011 As Navy Chief E-7
Bike from company run rather lean not rich, there is no detonation on M8 as there is knock sensor that prevent any detonation so I am not sure where you get your info.
Not sure where you got yours either consulted without multiple builders And tuners before the upload but thanks for stopping by
@@DeterminedVeteran The ideal air-fuel ratio that burns all fuel without excess air is 14.7:1 - M8 in stock form is 14.5-15 AFR and WOT is 12-13 which is exactly where it has to be not too rich at all. EPA rather prefer lean not rich AFR so not sure why HD would release engine with tune that creates more pollution while feds want less. If you check pre m8 models they were always too lean to meet EPA regs.
Fule mix has nuthing to do with your uper brether dumping oil in the intake 👌
No doubt that’s a completely different video
Four misspelled words in one sentence. Nice. 👎🏼
I try to get ethanol free fuel every time. we change the oil every thousand till 3k when new(all3 every time) we try hard to keep our bikes running perfectly. I want to see my new limited at 500 miles when I get this new one.
I recently did the bore scope on my 131 most definitely a video you want to see
I'm about to do my 1k mile service I'm thinking of doing just a cam and tune will this save me in the long run. What would anyone recommend I do for longevity?
Well longevity and Perfomance don’t mix … however I’ve ran S&S with Power Vision has always done me right in the past … this build I’m staying with Screaming Eagle to keep the warranty on Vader
