I was in Laconia for bike week 2019. Had an issue with my '17 Limited. Had no idea John would be the one looking at my bike. Great guy, took care of me really quickly and was awesome to talk with. I just wanted to thank you, John, for being there and taking care of my situation. Many thanks brother! Wish you great success in all you do! Greg

Just lived the oil transfer issue on my FLHTK 2019. In just about 500 miles, it had transferred about a quart of Formula 80W oil. Nothing broken, no catastrophic failures. When I became aware of the issue, I was on a road trip. Stopped at O’Tools Wurtsboro NY where a very friendly tech advisor understood exactly what was happening. Offered to repair in next few hours as they had the fix kit in stock but I was limited in time. Quick solution was to empty excess in an aluminium cooking pan from the derby cover and refill trans at hotel. Upon return home, went to my dealer who knew of the issue at hand. They had the bulletin notice and the repair kit to resolve. A couple hour later bike was fixed. 750 miles later, all is good and the oil level hasn’t dropped one drop. Conclusion, their is a fix and it works well. Just a note to say both dealers assured me it’s not a recall as not every bike will have this issue. You can have 100 bikes built in a row and only a few could have this issue, hence why it’s not a recall but a service bulletin I was told. Hey, sh*t happens.

@@jmc2567 Hey, it’s part of the Harley experience ! How else would they get you to visit the showroom ? In this perfect world where no other brands of motorcycles have recalls or service issues, it leaves Harley to stand out from the rest. The joy and pleasure a Harley provides is far outweighed with the technical issues that occur with Harley . Own one and find out. Big hello from Canada.

John, I’ve been a Motorcycle owner for over fifty years. Been tinkering with anything mechanical from trains, planes and automobiles for just a little longer. I do not watch many videos from people giving mechanical advice, as I have found many to be misinformed! I do really appreciate you taking the time to produce these straight forward, knowledgeable, and very informative videos! I’ve enjoyed your channel. Thank you!

Well just FYI I had a 2018 road king special that had the transfer issue. I heard about the problem from the H-D forums so I decided to check mine. I had 480 miles on the bike at the time and barely had any fluid on the tip of the dipstick. Took it to the dealer and of course they told me what you said and to drive it for 1000 miles and recheck. So I was going to do my 1000 miles service so that was 520 since last checked the tranny fluid. So I decided to check all the fluids before servicing. The transmission dipstick was completely dry. Dealer came and picked up the bike and after they looked it over and measured the ounces they told me it actually transferred 11 or 15 ounces in that 520 miles. So pretty bad I think. Of course the MOCO was stalling and they didnt want to fix it. So the dealer set all my fluids where they were supposed to be and gave me the 1000 mile service for free. Told me to keep riding it and checking the fluids regularly and adjust when needed. So I’m thinking I can’t go on long rides like I want to because every 400-500 miles I would have to drain and refill the primary and transmission until the MOCO decides to fix it if ever. So I was mad enough and tired of it and knew not all bikes were affected. So I took a chance and traded that bike at another Harley dealership on a new road glide ultra. It now has 2500 miles and not a single ounce has been transferred with this bike. I think I lucked out. But I believe the MOCO has tolerance issues with several of these bikes maybe just between a certain time frame at the factory. The new seals I’ve heard of being replaced didn’t work for anyone. Harley hasn’t replaced any transmissions yet that I’ve heard of. Probably why you see so many 2017 and 2018 bikes with very low mileage have already been traded back in or for sale. Sorry for the long comment.

Thats extremely hard to do.....as the used bikes most people want are the ones where someone bought a Harley but didnt really ride it...thats the "sweet spot" with Harleys...guys who think they can buy a Harley and it will suddenly make them "cool" so you can get a barely used bike at a huge discount...and this is a HUGE market. IF the issue is affecting less than 1 percent, as John stated, then its also only affecting 1% of the used/traded in market also...well maybe more if there was a predominant amount traded in due to the issue. IF you have an honest dealer, there should be a maintenance history available for the bike if it was serviced by Harley and was turned down warranty coverage (if you are getting it from a dealer). But even so, if you get one that has this seepage issue, its still hardly a catastrophic type issue, provided you check your fluids every 1000 miles or so?? You are saying you wouldnt take a long trip because of it?? I dont understand why? If I was on a 1000 mile trip, I absolutely would be checking my fluids every 2-3 gas stops, and if any were significantly low I would be adding more fluid? Granted, if its the primary that is low, I cant really check that, but if I know the issue is primary fluid seaping into transmission (the issue is opposite of this) I would then see additional fluid in the transmission and would know that there could be an issue. None of these problems would even remotely change the way I ride as none are going to "blowup" my motor as long as I do routine maintenance and keep an eye on things as I always do anyhow.....the issue is being somewhat overblown because of the internet. You can make 10,000 perfect motors but if 1 of them has issues, thats the one that you will see mentioned in every motorcycle forum on the planet....int he big picture this is nowhere near as bad as people are stating. Please dont take this post as a "dig" brother...its not meant that way...and congrats on your new bike.

    • @jasonmckinney6444
      @jasonmckinney6444 6 років тому +13

RedRider0151 guess you missed the part where I said every 400-500 miles I would have to do the fluid changes in the transmission and primary. Because the transmission transferred 11-15 ounces in 520 miles. For one that will get expensive. Also who wants to be bothered with trying to do a roadside fluid change while out. Also I do my own services so I wouldn’t stop into another Harley dealer a pay them what they want for service work that’s big money. If you would be happy having this problem and making payment on in my case a brand new $24,000.00 bike than by all means you go for it. I’ve had other new Harley’s that didn’t have any problems and that’s the way I like it. But if you want to spend all that money on a bike and have to go through all that hassle then you do it it’s your life and your money do it how you see fit.

Still driving my '17 Ultra Limited 3 years down the road and 50K miles later. Runs like a charm and never had a single issue with it. Took it in this spring and bumped it up to the 128CI with a Woods cam and she outruns most I've come across. We'll see how she's doing another 3 years down the road.

John. You’re the man. Thank you for putting this video out. I’m going to refer people to it. I get the oil pump question a lot and the oil transfer question a lot. People don’t realize that even if there is a little oil transfer from the transmission to the primary that it’s such a small amount that it won’t do anything. Especially if you’re servicing your bike according to the intervals specified by H-D. The bikes that do have a problem represent less than 1% of the M8s on the road. I look forward to seeing you at the dealer show this year. I LOVE MY Milwaukee 8. Sell that sporty and get one!

Apparently it will be interesting :-) and 2) I have done 16'000 miles with my 2017 M8 RKS in a year and am wondering if it is worth doing a stage 2 cam upgrade (for torque as I like torque) at 20'000 and if I should also upgrade the clutch basket at the same time?

The triumph 1600 t bird is the nicest bike and most comfortable ive ever ridden. 17000 miles on it 2011 and truely like new, no rust and great quality finish. Theyre a steal and my mate paid £5500 secondhand. HD evo money and thats not mint. I do however prefer these to later motors but time and mileage and the biker telephone will come out with long term truth

Follow up on the '18 FLTRU...
47k miles now, did end up with some fluid transfer after... 10-15k I believe. They did the crank breather update which helped mine. Great bike with minimal issues over these few years.
Triumph 1600 was a fantastic bike with a lot of character. Conversation bike at every stop... "I used to have a..." kind of bike.
The FLTRU has been WAY more comfortable though with the heated hammock & rider backrest, heated grips, etc.
She's sitting in the front yard with a sale sign on her as I don't ride as much anymore (work + farm life).
I do not like the trajectory of the newer bikes (digital dash etc) and will likely go old school kickover for the next one, for short hops.

Just a comment on the new bikes, the problem is that when a customer takes their $32000 motorcycle to a dealer with what they feel is a problem, and the dealer says “that’s normal, it isn’t a problem we’re aware of”, then they talk to others who have the same problem. Low and behold several months later Harley-Davidson admits it and comes up with a fix. I personally know a guy with the leaky valve seat problem, and it took months to get it fixed, and this was on a brand new bike. Not everyone is an HD mechanic, most of us have to rely on our dealership for answers and when those answers are lies, it gets very frustrating!!!

Great video John. I bought my 2019 FLTRX on 4/6/19 had the 1000 mile service done at dealership at 991 miles and I verified oil levels before leaving dealership and all was good. Today 5/9/19 at 1850 miles checked transmission dipstick and it was dry. Added 10 ounces to bring to halfway mark on dipstick. Back to dealership tomorrow. I had hoped they would have this fixed by 2019 models. My bikes build date was 3/19/19 so it appears Harley Davidson has done nothing to fix this. Too bad as otherwise it's a great motorcycle.

      Same scenario..got tired of it..went back to Indian..no issues..2nd one..all good..well made!!..by the way I have 92' evo 37k ..no problems with transfer..go figure

I've bougt a brand new M8 SGS 114" bj 2019 , in which "the oil transfer issue" occured ( and another member of our HD club has bought last year a M8 RK 107" bj 2018 , which is infected with that same "issue" as well .)
...so please don't try to convince us that it is just "rare" , because it is not.
Both of the bikes are under warrenty , and get an approved "fix" at the dealer ( but it is no guarantee that it will solve the problem for 100% ) ,
So if it does , I'll let you know here .

A relief to hear from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, that while there have been instances where it has occurred, it isn’t the fatal flaw that many make it out to be. Best Harley ever, no primary , water cooled no vibration . It was a red head step child. Smooth, powerful but it had one problem. It did not sound like a Harley. Developed by Porsche, it was no crotch rocket but it was a definite Improvement on the basic design.....

    • @BloodPlusPwn
      @BloodPlusPwn 4 роки тому

@@jackcook4772 I had a v-rod and I loved it (I have a gen 2 vmax now, so you really don't need to talk to me about performance). "Improvement" however is a subjective take on it. It very much feels "clinical" when compared to a more traditional Harley and it's no faster than modern M8's that are designed to perform. The only real advantage it had in the performance world was that it was water cooled and didn't use pushrods, but in reality who's riding these bikes to beat 600 super sports off the line? A Harley is fast enough to hot rod around and get you down the road, but a more traditional Harley is a thousand times cooler even if it takes it a little bit longer to do it.
It's not all about performance, and people ALWAYS go right there when talking about how Harley's "suck". Well, mister, maybe they aren't for you? I'm sure people sell stuff that is. People need to learn where their opinion ends and objectivity begins.

Another great video man, I know what you're saying about the internet and taking things out of proportion and sometimes creating problems that are non-existent. Several years ago Stihl moved fuel injection in their concrete saws but they knew that it would likely get a negative feedback and the people would create a problem where there was none and say that it was no go so instead of hyping up that they were going to fuel injection on these concrete saws they did it very very quietly and didn't say anything didn't advertise it much and before they knew it people were in love with the fuel injector over the old carbureted and they didn't even know it.

Love all bikes, started on an ‘85 xl80s, moved to a ‘96 xv535 virago, to a ‘14 ninja 300, and a ‘17 z125. Ridden other bikes too, One of my favorites being a ‘16 victory high ball, modded out to be so fast my ass about slid off the seat in first gear. Talk about torque... went from really desiring a 765 street triple to a z900, z900rs, scout, to a Stryker... but I’m about 95% sure I’m committed to a new softail Low Rider. I don’t like forward controls, the handle bars are just like my old virago (and I loved em) and the bike as a whole is about the sexiest thing I’ve seen.

The 2nd and 3rd time it happened with the updated pump. Apparently, this doesn't happen as much with the 114's. FYI I have the first year 2014 street glide special and although little things have happened, loose stuff...etc, nothing major has been an issue. Although not buying the first year of anything is a great rule of thumb, I lucked out. Had it for 6 years now, ride all the time. got 34k on it. Oddly, I thought I'd have all the extras and have it set the way I like it, but it's a money pit for eBay and craigslist. There's always something new that I want for it... I believe it'll never stop! Ride safe and don't forget to wear a mask! Make your mom proud!

Bought my first HD last November - 2017 Ultra Limited. 9k miles so far and nothing but grins. I just did a Stage 1 myself with the SEPST, ventilator ac, and a set of Cobra 909 pipes. Left the cat in place. Nice little bump in power and great intake sound now. There is very little about this bike I don’t love.

    I got a used 2008 Suzuki C90T Boulevard!
    9600 miles on it
    $4200
    Wanted a HD.
For a 90 hp plus HD used
$9K was the best I could find .
I love HD, but there not twice the price of a Rice Burner.
    A 2008 Goldwing was $7.5-8k
    1836 cc
    Something is wrong with HD....
    The new Indian bikes
    The big hogs....
Front tire was $500 plus installation.
    Buy a new Rice Burner,
Save tons of money, and end up with the better ride over all.

I used to own a Suzuki Boulevard C50. Great bike. Nothing bad to say. However, if anyone thinks they are as nice as the bike they clone Heritage Softail, then they are fooling themselves. I will also say, I find used HDs are relatively more costly than a new one.

Tena Heffernan my brother in law has a 2008 HD Heritage soft tail.
      He bought it new.
You would think he would ride it a lot.
MAYBE twice a year, were same age.. he’s in better shape then me.
I ride his once ever ever three weeks or so.
I ride my Suzuki 1500 three times a week or more.
The HD is stronger over all.
I’m used to the feel of mine.
His is ok but he never washes it.. that’s what I’m for I guess.lol.
      I’m addicted to riding.
I love a cool crisp sun up on a Sunday morning.
I ride to either Galveston island or downtown Houston.
      See everything with no traffic...
I ride to lake Charles Louisiana to gamble.
Texas is scared of gambling and pot.
The religious would lose a lot of free money if they legalized fun in Texas.
I got my first bike license at 15 for a Honda XL 100
      In 1976..👁👁

I just came across your channel as I was looking at possibly buying a brand new fat boy. To start things off at about the time you said the new engine had a tranny to primary leak, I had to start writing this. Bear with me as I know this video is Ober a year old but I had bought a brand new HD Softail Custom for $9600.00 in 1987. After dumping another 8k into the engine and chrome I found out I had a "bad" set of engine cases. This was known by Harley at the time but it was a "silent recall" for lack of the term they use. I was tight with the guys at my local shop and they told me that my cases had to be replaced. I told them that I wanted the f¥¢k!ng bike sold I was so furious. Turns out I'm a firefighter in the city I live and a medics brother was a lead engineer for HD (did I get lucky). He gave me the number of the top two guys in charge of customer service for HD at the time, telling me to call the no. 2 guy first. I got a call one day from the number 1 guy and he was cool telling me that he understood my frustration and that we had the same riding season and that I wouldn't get my new cases until the end of the season. Fortunately I had a good friend who gave me the key to his garage and his heritage softail and said I could use it anytime I wanted. Here it is 24 yrs after I sold that bike due to a pill addiction (percocet , vicodin) and I've been sober for 21 years and thinking of buying another Harley (which was so near and dear to my heart and the tons of compliments I got on that bike after it stood me over $17,000) and Harley is having the same old issues ? Wtf, please tell me this ain't so ! (When are they going to build a dependable bike for $20,000 now ?) If it is I'll keep my helmet shelved and buy a vette or something. I heard stories of old Harleys when I bought mine and told those people to go f*** themselves only to put my foot in my mouth cuz they were right !?
Btw, I'm still going to stay subscribed to your channel cuz your funny af and informative and hopefully these issues will have passed Harley by 🙏🏻 !!! ... ✌🏻

Hi John; thanks again for the videos. I bought a new '18 FLTRX and love it. I've run the piss out of it and have not had a single concern for 4K+ miles.
All the crap on the internet had me concerned initially but I've been out on the super slab blowing away cages left and right lol

I have a question. It gets hot in Albuquerque sometimes, and the M8 engine kicks off a cylinder to conserve heat when the engine gets too hot, generally when the motor gets hot i see oil start to leak out of the air cleaner which i'm not sure is normal, or if it was occurring regardless or if there's a problem i'm pretty sure its just that there was a tiny bit too much oil in the pan and it just sprayed through into the cleaner but i'm just curious, this has happened on my '18 Fat Bob, as well as my Dad's '17 Street Glide Special
