  • Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle discusses how the gut microbiome is linked to perimenopause and menopause. Certain bacteria in the gut are responsible for the “cleavage” and activation of estrogen produced by various organs in the body. Without this “cleavage,” estrogen is not activated and thus not usable. If the gut is damaged, estrogen cleavage does not occur properly, potentially leading to faster perimenopause/menopause onset and greater symptomatic severity. This talk describes how perimenopause and menopause are a common cause of career and life derailment for women and describes the interaction between the gut and estrogen. Additionally, there is a focus on several key “symptoms” of perimenopause and menopause, which are directly related to gut imbalances (for example: brain fog, sleep disturbances, hot flashes, circadian rhythm disturbances, weight gain, and anxiety). Angle shares some tips about what you can do to maintain a healthy gut microbiome during perimenopause and menopause to keep your estrogen levels as high as possible.

I've delved deep into nutrition, and probably know enough about it to be dangerous, but this is the first I've heard that the gut microbiome affects the utilization of estrogen. What a fascinating and useful topic.
