And yet she was very modest about it. I don't think she ever believed how special she was, which is why she literally made herself smaller and smaller until there was nothing left.

I remember when The Carpenters first came on the scene when I was in my mid-teens...When Karen was taken from us , a part of us all died that day... I still listen to the Carpenters from time to time and think of Karen and her beautiful voice and sometimes I will let a few tears fall as I listen to her singing... Shawn and Mel, great reaction and thank you for sharing this beautiful voice with us again... I know you love her as much as we do...R.I.P. Sweet angel...

A very vivid memory....I was 14, at my friend Tammy's house, and we were lying on the floor at night, watching TV. Her mom was in the recliner behind us. I don't remember what TV show we were watching, but a news break came on with Karen Carpenter's picture. The newscaster announced, "In breaking news: Singer Karen Carpenter has died. She was 32." Tammy and I and her mother all gasped and looked at each other in equal horror. We were literally speechless. When Karen died, it was a huge shock, and it seemed like people all over the world collectively shared the pain. Nobody has forgotten her. The only good that came of it was raising awareness about anorexia nervosa, which wasn't understood as well then, as it is now. May God help all people with this condition; it is an insidious disease that hangs on to you and doesn't let go. Rest in peace Karen. Thank you for your incredible voice and your dedication in sharing it with all of us.

I vividly remember the first time I heard this glorious recording: it was on a family picnic just outside Llangollen, North Wales, in late July 1973 and I was 14 years old. My older cousin was a huge Carpenters fan, I was just discovering them and we had both raved about "Goodbye to Love" the previous year. The BBC Radio 1 Singles Chart Show was playing on her car radio and she confidently predicted I was going to love the new Carpenters song that had just entered the chart. How right she was! Karen's sublime vocals and Richard's beautiful orchestral arrangement rang out against the beautiful setting of mountains in the Land of Song and I was totally captivated. More than 50 years later it remains my favourite-ever recording of any pop song, by any artist, and I can't see that ever changing.

The song was written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. In 1973, there was a blooming nostalgia for the late 1950s and early '60s."American Graffiti" had been a big hit movie, Elton John had his first Billboard #1 with "Crocodile Rock", The Beach Boys "Endless Summer" hit #1 on the Album charts and this was one of the biggest worldwide hits that summer. Treat yourselves and listen to the entire "now andThen" album.
