    I was a huge fan of the Carpenters in my late teens. I felt this song was sung for me, after several breakups that greatly affected me. At 25 I said 'goodbye to love' in reality and never looked for it again. I have spent the rest of my life 'alone'. It happens. I'm 66. I feel I've had a good life alone.

    WOW! The reaction from you two was so touching! And genuine! I was fortunate to have grown up with Carpenters music. My high school days in the early seventies were filled with their wonderful music. It was easy for a young man like me to have a crush on such a beautiful young woman like Karen, with an ANGELIC voice. AND PLAYED THE DRUMS!!! Seeing her sad story unfold and her health deteriorate was hard. Wish she could have found the true love she so desperately sought and so richly deserved. 50 years later and this still brings a tear to my eye. Yes, God is love. And he is enjoying her ANGELIC voice now. Rest in peace beautiful girl!
    Very nice and heartwarming reaction from you guys. Keep up the good work!

    At the beginning of the song the line "time and time again the chance for love has passed me by and all I know of love is how to live without it..." is sung on a single breath... I was so fortunate to meet Karen and Richard several times and her perfect pitch and three octave range is unlike any contemporary female singer I can think of... ❤️

    @stevetournay6103 6 місяців тому +8

    Yes, KC did feel the way this lyric suggests, at least eventually...if probably not as early as 1972 when this song appeared. The irony is that Goodbye To Love was written around the title, which was repeatedly mentioned in an old Bing Crosby movie called Rhythm On The River. There's no actual song by that name in the movie, but Richard saw it on TV one evening, liked the title, and he and John Bettis wrote the song around it. Retrospectively it's reflective of Karen's life story. Quite a few Carpenters songs are that way, usually unintentionally, whether they're their own (Eve, Only Yesterday, Goodbye To Love) or covers (Solitaire, A Song For You).
    Another interesting detail about Goodbye To Love is Tony Peluso's electric guitar solo work. That was Richard's idea, and in the process he and Tony invented a new pop subgenre, the power ballad.

    This is one of my favorite Carpenters songs. It ties with "Love Me For What I Am" and "Trying To Get The Feeling Again" for the second-place position, below "I Need To Be In Love" (which is my very favorite song). I think it speaks to the feeling that so many people have when it seems that is all that life holds for them, a life alone with no hope of love. Concerning the last line, they added it just to provide a bit of hope despite a very bleak situation.

    Shawn and Mel,
    I’m surprised you didn’t know this song. It’s historic in a number of ways. It’s written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis, supposedly about John but really about Karen. She was 22 here which makes it extra sad. Also in the third verse Karen sang 26 syllables with no breath. That was like a torture run. Its place in history is as the first Power Ballad. That was Tony Peluso on fuzz guitar.
    When anyone covers this song, they don’t usually make the 26 syllable run. They breathe in a place like any other song. There is one who has sung that part with no breath. This is in honor of Karen, sing the song the way she did. It was Tori Holub. Linked below, it’s a short but has the no breath 26 syllable run.

This really did seem like Karen's theme song, unfortunately. She never did find the love of her life. She had a "list" of what she wanted in a guy. They were just so busy touring, there was never time to meet anyone as well as being wary of people just wanting her for that "image". :/

    What makes these lyrics so very sad is that she must have been hurt so deeply. Karen was never plump, but someone, at some time made her feel fat. Karen couldn't see that she was good enough, pretty enough and slim enough just the way she was. She must have made guys fall in love with her angelic voice, but singers spend so much time on the road. And so many guys are users and con men who might want her money. Stardom is so isolating. If ever there was a lady in an ivory tower, waiting to be rescued, Karen was that lady. Sadly, she was not rescued and the world lost Karen and her talent.

IMO the problem stemmed from her very own mother, never giving Karen the love she needed , wanted, begged for, support, and encouragement. Her mother, Agnes Carpenter even couldn't tell Karen she loved her during a counseling session. But please don't take my word for it, read books written and movies made on The Carpenters and form your own opinion.

    That is one of the biggest problem with fame. You can never trust even the closest to you to be pure and not be corrupted in some fashion. She was the 2nd child and Richard was the Golden one. He mother was completely controlling down to everything with them and Karen never lived up to her expiation. She loved playing drums better that singing and did both but she overheard record exect's talking about her weight and pulling her from behind the drums in front live she went into the whole of believing she was not good or thin enough for everyone so she developed this mental disease of anorexia-nervosa where she literally starved herself to death. She would lie about eating when she didn't.

    As it's been mentioned, this was written by Richard and his writing partner John Bettis, I think it probably reflects Richard's feelings more than it does Karen's. I'd even speculate that the little glimmer of hope, the caveat written into the song, is there because Karen wouldn't have sung it otherwise, and Richard knew that. Don't get me wrong, the song is a self-fulfilling prophecy for how things turned out, and that's heartbreaking, but I don't think it necessarily reflected her feelings at the time. That's my hot take, anyways.

    Unfortunately, putting an electric fuzz guitar solo on this, although a new novelty back then, has become the focus of the song when new folks hear it, rather than the song as a whole, the content. Suddenly the words "Power Ballad" comes out of their mouths, which as a musican bores the hell out of me. At the time it was something no one was doing, it was a stand alone unique thing, no need to ctetorize the song as a this or that to satisfy your musical need to fulfill your testosterone reassurance ritual...Thank you Shawn and Mel for recognizing the whole content of the song intelligently.
