Such amazing games! Excellent commentary explaining what's happening so well. I just wish the quality was better, but otherwise great stuff. Love seeing how far the game has evolved since 2012.
Yup. It was put on by the ST Revival crew. The last-minute qualifiers and the majority of the ToL itself was done on another stream, with Top8 being showcased on the main stage and streamed by Evo.
And, thank you for your efforts too, sir! This was the only one I missed live from literally falling asleep at four in the morning or so. So, Thank You!

Glad to hear that. We need more passionate players like you in the FGC. 1 hour is pretty far away from Walnut, but if you can ever make it, I promise you it's worth the trip. There's few places that have as many concentrated top-level players in one place than Super Arcade, for a variety of games. Round 1 is a nice place, but can be quite pricey for all the entertainment that they offer.
Imagine playing this back in the day when it was current .. and evo was out lik eit is now .... ohhwee ... the crowd back den... the intensity.. you was never let down back in those good 90's ..... #80sbabies ...
When Mao does a wall dive, he has such pixel perfect spacing and timing where even if you input a DP, he'll switch sides on you, and the game will mis-interpret your input, and you'll get beat. Beginner/intermediate claws are unable to do this, and so its fairly easy to reversal them using Old shotos.
ST is the best. It should steal the spotlight at EVO. SFV is great. But ST is the cornerstone of fighting games. Capcom should release the game for PC Xbone and PS4 and allow cross play to maintain a big pool of players.
Damn, wanted E. Honda to win! When I was a teenager no one in my local arcade thought E.Honda was good. This guy was absolutely amazing with this character!!!!!
Awesome. I'm glad you're getting back into ST. GGPO is a good source for online ST play, and a lot of players on there are very strong. If you're blessed to be living in Socal or near NY, you have access to strong local competition, which I highly recommend you go to. I consider Ryu to have a perfect design in ST. He's very strong all-around, but has tough matchups against the top tiers, but he has all the tools he needs to win even his bad matchups. Claw still beats up shotos pretty bad
Over 20 years old and still the best fighting game in the world. If they fixed some of the BS like vegas wall dive crossup and refined some of the other things I would never play another fighting game again (now I don't really play any). Its sheer genius and all the stages, music, character designs are how we all remember as kids. This was the last true version of the street fighter there ever was, but thankfully it was also the best and will last a lifetime.
Dynamic3DLtd Thank you Dynamic3DLtd, well said. Some might say its 3rd Strike, but to so many more it'll always be; ST which was Capcom's apex with the whole SF series!. I just wish; Capcom would've given the original ST a proper HD treatment as they've done with "3rd Strike Online Edition" and abandon the crappy HDRemix David Sirlin gave people and what some folks download play off of; 'Xbox Live Arcade' and 'PSN'. ST needs a REAL release as its own edition, a remastered "last edition" with a HD boost in picture quality and a; 5.1./7.1 remix with its audio. With the latest features for a modern day digital re-release on consoles, for both current and previous gen (360, PS3 and on; PS4, Xbox One). like; Training Modes, Survival Mode, Edit Feature (change clothing appearance), World Tour mode (face everybody/roster) lobbies, GGPO connection, UA-cam Matches upload capability etc. Reckon that'll be pretty sweet if Capcom wanted to clear the air with ST and give it a grand send off with a final version for the 'purists' out there globally etc.
They both have been part of the ST scene for a very long time. Although neither players actively play with the local ST crowd anymore, they're still very good players, and have a definite passion for the game.
T.Hawk was largely considered bottom tier in the US for a LONG time. It wasn't until a 2-man T.Hawk team in Japan nearly won SBO, that people started to notice him. There's quite a LOT of tech that was developed for T.Hawk, all of which is very difficult to execute, but he's one of the deadliest characters in the game if you get knocked down. Sadly, here in America, majority of players just stick to the top tier and rarely explore mid-to-bottom tiered characters in any fighting game.
36:05 How did Damdai miss the DP tatsu O.Select six times in a row? If they cross up during the input it can mess up both the special moves? I didn't look he X.uped the last two wall dives.
Balrog (Vega in America) it's only a cheap character, using the same move to low half of the energy bar, it's harder to use Honda even in a casual match, very good channel bro :)
After what 25 years, they still explain the name change.. gotta love it.. - And what is the ultimate home version of ssf2? anyone? i've been playing regular ssf2 on snes for a lot of years now and i wanna new version, any suggestions? Oh and keep it cheap, no money for a dreamcast with third strike, i wish.;p
CRT tube tvs, have no input lag. LCD tvs can have a frame or two lag, it is hard to notice but in high level fighting like this it does make a difference. Plus they are playing on actual CPS2 hardware, which outputs 240p, you would have to upscale that on an LCD and it would look like crap.
If you guys want to check out some more Evo footage from the ToL qualifiers, you can check out the streamer's youtube channel, IEBATTLEGROUNDS for more exciting ST matches. ST will never die.
No, ...thank you. I would say this was the best SF tournament I ever saw IF they would've disqualified players for using Vega. Just my opinion. Thanks again, take care.
according to some info i came across a while back, Capcom did some re-balancing to the anniversary edition back when they released it on the ps2 and x-box. Maybe those made it into the cabinets, if the cabinets are new,
It's arguable whether or not HDR is more balanced, but I see your point. HDR had many changes which were either good, terrible, or sounded good on paper but not on execution. Vega is still extremely powerful in ST, but we've just sort of learned to deal with it. It forces players to develop more effective strategies against him. Anyways, a lot of division was created by HDR which split the community, with many guys supporting one game over the other. Lack of tourney support hurt HDR.
Well, you can consider him my third or forth guy. Same in X Tekken. Though there I use Lars and Abel as my main team. I've always enjoyed playing dictator, claw and boxer cause they were so cool as bosses back in the day ^^ Abel gameplay is just so fun so I picked him up as well :P Who do u play? :)
What were they playing this on? I remember playing this constantly as a kid on the 3DO and it NEVER ran this fast or smooth. Could be corrupted memory on my part though.
They adapted the original arcade boards to run on a TV. They're basically playing the arcade right there. And you're right, the 3DO is not as fast or smooth as this.
They plug in the boards in something called a Supergun, which is basically the wiring needed to run any arcade board and n video encoder to process the signal through a normal TV (via s-video or rca jacks). You can replicate it without much problem, you just need to wire things correctly and get the needed parts.
Not really, it depends on how well you build your supergun. Mine for instance has composite/s-video, but others use RGB or Scart. Coupled with a good monitor and you should have a super clean and crisp picture that rivals a candy cab monitor. Also, superguns can't have lag other than what the monitor causes, unless you were using some adapter for the controllers (even then, there are some adapters like laugh's or undamned's that add unnoticeable delay, next to nothing). About not using cabs, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't let them go through the hassle of moving them up on stage, I went on 2014 and that same thing happened; X-Mania finals had to be played on superguns, cause either nobody wanted to go through the hassle of moving the cabs up on stage, or time constraints.
in japan vegas balrog balrogs m bison and bison is vega because in america m bison sounds a bit like mike tyson so they had to change it for copywrite reasons
Generally Old characters are unable to tech throws, and don't have supers. In exchange for these weaknesses, they're usually given better priority on their normal moves, as well as some minor changes to their special moves. Notably the best old characters would be O.Sagat, O.Ken, O.Hawk. and imo O.Ryu.
Wow Vega is ridiculous. I don't play st, but how is Vega acceptable? It just seems like his moves are faster, have better reach, his walk speed is better than any other character, and he has the super ambiguous left/right/throw from the air mix up, where even if you guess right and block, he's too far away to punish. Not looking to start a war, I'm just curious for some in-sight from a st player who can explain his weaknesses.
+Kevin Theriault have to try to hit him out of his wall dives, u see guys going up to hit it during a lot of the matchs. but it isnt free, nothing is in st.
***** st is better balanced then some of the later games. dont act like chun doesnt dominate 3 and even in 4 a lot of the cast isnt viable. st is open enough were u can still do well with bad characters. Zangief is bottom tier in st and still maintains the ability to destroy people. Low tiers in other games cant do that.
***** if u actually play st u noe whats better balanced. Any tier shifts u see is totally based on specialist that change the prescription of the player base and this is only possible due to superior mechanics. Nothing in 3 or 4 will change.
+Kevin Theriault Vega is definitely one of the top characters in ST, arguably the strongest, even. The strengths you've listed are all well taken, and players like MAO and Noguchi use them to their highest potential. Of course, Vega isn't unbeatable, even at top level play. He actually has a very short throw range compared to lots of other characters, and he needs charge to get his Scarlet Terror off as a reversal. Hence, he can be susceptible to close-range mixups if an opponent can get in. This is especially problematic against characters with really good inside games (like Balrog, Dee Jay, and even E. Honda). Once they get up close and pin Vega down, they can pressure him with normals, ambiguous jump-ins and cross-ups, throw mixups, etc. Although this can be tough to do, as Vega is still very slippery and can still use reversal throw and Scarlet Terror to counter, it's still a strategy that can cause Vega problems.
It's technically teaching, as it providing some information in the description. This could also count as new reporting. And as long as he isn't making money off it and doesn't claim it as his it's not really a breach of copyright. And if UltraDavid wanted to he could probably have gotten this taken down or had something happen already ... but he didn't so it's pretty clear he has no problem with this video.
The amount of knowledge David and James have on all of these fighting games is insane. Learn so much just from listening to them
Damn, these commentators have spent a lot of their lives playing this.
Yep
I meant AWESOME. I wouldn't ever expect to be watching a SF2 video on 2012, but these guys have brought the game far beyond their programmers -and nearly all of us- could ever imagine.
Thanks for uploading.
Even in 2023 is awesome
hard to believe a Super Turbo Tournament having such a fun audience and participation even after all these years!
Not hard to believe at all. Passion in us true gamers never dies.
Chen and Dave are the GOATS of SF commentary, they're like Madden-Summerall
this game will forever be a classic watching the game at high level play and knowing the subtleties going on makes this game that much more amazing!
Such amazing games! Excellent commentary explaining what's happening so well. I just wish the quality was better, but otherwise great stuff. Love seeing how far the game has evolved since 2012.
So hype. I’ve watched this a few times. What an electric crowd. Great players.
Being there was insanity. The hype was boiling over.
Yup. It was put on by the ST Revival crew. The last-minute qualifiers and the majority of the ToL itself was done on another stream, with Top8 being showcased on the main stage and streamed by Evo.
probably my favorite super turbo tournament
Some of the best ST commentary out there.

Some of the best commentary I have heard.
Wow great commentary. Can't believe I watched all of it. Looks like a successful tourny, keep it up.

It is stupid and annoying.

it's cool but RNG stun is just stupid and has no place in fighting games
SFV is an embarrassing piece of shit
Damn, wanted E. Honda to win!

I remember when I was a kid I used to play this all the time. Good times.
Best super turbo 2 tournament i have ever see
I wish Honda and Hawk had more game time. I was so hyped watching those characters do some work
Always so exciting to watch SF2 Turbo.

thanks for up loading this EVO ST. awesome
alguien sabe por que se intercambiaron los nombres de m bison balrog y vega?
This game is broken as hell and we love every single moment of it.
This game is the doom for fighting games. Everything really came from this game
Over 20 years old and still the best fighting game in the world.

3rd Strike, Alpha 3. This could be the 3rd...
Yeah, look it up there's a slight delay in fighting games when you're on an HDTV.
Can anyone link or hook me up with a working copy of this rom, I can't get the gfx files anywhere.
They both have been part of the ST scene for a very long time. Although neither players actively play with the local ST crowd anymore, they're still very good players, and have a definite passion for the game.

I believe this version of street fighter is available on the PS2 as Streetfighter Collection. It came with streetfighter 3: Third Strike
Aun se sigue jugando este streetfighter? !!!
That setup is godlike! Wonder if we can have a same setup for CPS3 cabinets.
I really appreciate the description.
As a Vega player, this made me quite happy :3

Was ST the Hi-Light of EVO 2012 ? after watching this entire Tournament it appears so.

just a side tournament with some of the most iconic players in the fgc of all time.
Damn ima become a legend by learning vega's one move :)
Any luck
@@lewissteward65 NAH HE AINT COMING BACK
Kusumondo was the most talented guy in this tournament. I can't respect a glitcher/cheessy Vega/Balrog player

Thank you very much for the timestamps.
Absolute top-notch gameplay and commentating.
"HE WENT FOR IT"
That was such a damn good play.
I still don't get the different types, what's with some of these people not having super meter? And what's the advantage of not having one?
HYOOOOOOOOOOO! Claw so dirty XD brings back some bad past memories growing up with his game.
i will never forget this... evo ended 4am est time because of this
The crowd is VERY engaged, which is great.

No, its avaliable through emulation, and downloadable off of HD Remix on PSN and Xbox Live.
The TVs are even old school!

How come the characters names are wrong in the game?
Japanese standard is turbo 3, US cabs are turbo 2. Those custom-made cabs had JP ST boards on them, so they were on turbo3.
20:07 Broken but so Good (respect to the appreciation of a good fighting game over today's EXTRA complaints of imbalance)
CRT monitors have 0 display lag, that's why they're used. LCD monitors all have inherent lag when displaying the image.
It's arguable whether or not HDR is more balanced, but I see your point. HDR had many changes which were either good, terrible, or sounded good on paper but not on execution.
