UFL Open Beta Full Review - Potential... but a long way to go to compete with EA FC & eFootball!

In UFL, you start by choosing your club name, team captain, and formation, which you can adjust in-game. You're then assigned random players.
The menus and presentation are impressive, surpassing eFootball. I’d even say menu navigation is better than EA’s FC 24, although the modes are limited to online 1 vs 1 & local play.
A standout feature is the transfer market, similar to eFootball’s Dream Team, allowing you to select any player and strategically build your team.
The tactical screen is nearly identical to EA FC's. This isn't necessarily bad, as it offers a wide range of tactical options.
By playing ranked matches and completing challenges, you can earn in-game currency to buy players and strengthen your squad. Players also gain experience, which can be used to enhance their skills in attack and defense.
In Ranked matches, you can view your opponent's team sheet, wins, draws, losses, and division. The pre-match cutscene is well-crafted, putting eFootball’s presentation to shame, and the graphics are detailed and sharp.
As this is an Open Beta, bugs are expected. For instance, I encountered a bug that allowed my player to enter the opponent's half before kickoff.
Upon kickoff, the game felt clunky, with noticeable input lag, particularly with ball possession. Initially, I attributed this to having low-level players, but the lag persisted even with a semi-decent squad featuring Ronaldo.
Normal low passes are quick and accurate, but the passing system feels too automated, making it difficult to distinguish between good and bad passers. Control over pass power is limited, affecting only the distance, and through-passes often don't go where intended. Long through-passes are overly fast and abruptly slow down, creating an unrealistic backspin effect.
Crossing felt somewhat manual, and targeting specific players was challenging, though this might be due to the short practice period. Headers felt realistic, unlike in EA FC 24.
Goalkeepers generally perform well but tend to parry the ball too often. I haven't faced any world-class goalkeepers yet and haven't noticed if they come off their line without manual intervention, as there's only the 1vs1 ranked mode. The goalkeeper animations are good, reacting quickly to loose balls and appearing natural rather than superhuman.
Slide tackling was nearly impossible to execute effectively. Defending felt more successful by obstructing opponents, who also seemed to struggle with the input lag. One opponent, who beat me, was sliding recklessly, likely trying to complete a tackling challenge.
Overall player movement when defending is similar to FC24, where players don't move freely or quickly. The defending feels manual, which is a positive, but the secondary player press lacks impact. I prefer eFootball’s secondary player press using R1 while defending.
Shooting looks good but feels too assisted, a common complaint in modern football games. The lack of variety in goals might stem from fear of input lag and reluctance to attempt complex maneuvers.
The game’s assistance can promote toxic play, such as keeping possession in the backline. A mechanic should be introduced to penalize excessive backward passes without progression, such as poor touches or misplaced passes.
Replays are polished and rival EA FC’s, clearly outperforming eFootball's.
Soundwise, the menu music is decent, and the crowd sounds surpass eFootball’s. Commentary is adequate but sometimes delayed and occasionally mismatched with on-field events. For example, incorrect score updates and wrong formation mentions. This might lead to turning off commentary if not improved in the full release.
The sound of the ball hitting the bar, post, and net is oddly loud but can be adjusted or turned off in the settings.
Despite the off-field readiness, the on-pitch gameplay needs work, which is why it’s still in Beta. The game has potential if the input lag is reduced without speeding up the pace and the passing and shooting assistance is toned down. With these improvements, UFL could become a significant competitor to EA FC and eFootball. The foundation, including menus and Dream Team-style player selection, is solid, and the graphics are impressive.
Player face likeness needs improvement, but graphical details are secondary to gameplay. As long as players are recognizable from the default camera view, it’s sufficient.
There’s a lack of player individuality, with all players moving similarly. Addressing this would enhance the gameplay experience.
Connectivity was mostly stable, with only one server disconnection. Online play was generally smooth.
Initially, UFL aimed to offer a FIFA-like experience without scripting, and this vision is evident. With polish, fans of FIFA/EA FC might enjoy UFL, but pure simulation enthusiasts may need to wait or opt for real-life play. - Ігри

This review is perfect spoons! Exactly my thoughts about this game down to the last detail.
I've received a lot of heat online for the same opinion as yours. unfortunately. Most people are just glad there is a different football game on the market already, but dont see the similarities to EAs Product.
Still does some better changes but feels like it still should improve quite a bit in Gameplay, definitely feels too arcady in almost any situation for my taste. I'm somewhat treated too greatly with decades of great animations from Konami, well.. this statement didn't aged well nowadays sadly.

It's not for me in it's current state but I can see potential.... have to get the gameplay to be fun and intuitive first....otherwise everything else falls by the wayside.
The game is trying to be an eSport, so going the arcade route makes sense. With a sim, you'll have a lot more randomness akin to the real sport. With an arcade style game, you can minimise the randomness, which in turn makes it more skill based. I find the game very enjoyable, mainly due to the removal of DDA/Scripting. Not since PES 2015, have I played a game without heavy DDA. A fair online game is a big selling point, while the passing, shooting, dribbling, interceptions need improving, I'm getting more enjoyment from EFL than the two other rigged football games, even in its current state.
Randomness is a part of real football, that's what makes football fun and unpredictable. If everyone plays the game like Street Fighter where as long as they can input correct combo, they can win every 1v1 duel, and that takes everything away from a fun game. @@karl343. Simulation is always better for a fair sports game IMO.

From the look of it it seems they already are. Tbh
it sounds like pretty much what i expected. it was never gonna be a game you're gonna wanna transition to from pes nor fifa right off the bat. but with pes and fifa being so static over the years, IF ufl is determined enough to keep on improving on it with a decent speed, maybe in a few years they'll catch up to them.
the more important thing is what they're aiming for, which seems to be being a fifa competitor, which was kinda obvious from the start, but still kinda disappointing honestly.
I'm excited to see how's the 2k game gonna be.

I immediately noticed the input lag, i feel that this game is at least another year away from being officially released. I cannot see that it can be ready before the year ends. The devs should definitely take their time and not rush it. The ball animation also felt very weird as well, it feels like Fifa's ball animation from back in the day. Its also important to note that it took Fifa EAFC) many years to be the game it is today, so the devs should be proud of having a game that isnt perfect but has the potential be great in time.
I appreciate their commitment. I believe if they eventually do get the resources should the game become popular they will really work hard to push boundaries for the genre.

Great review! I think if they sort out the responsivness and assist as its far too much, it will feel much better over all.
We just need more control over what the players do but not to the point where its becomes like EAFC and everyone is a god with the things they can do with their feet.
Song track and goalkeeping I think is the best across all games
Another thing about this game is pace. No matter how fast your strikers are, the defenders always seem to catch up.

I played one match and lost 5-1, but have to say, I still very much liked the experience (it was 100% skill issue that I lost so heavily). For a first ever game in their franchise, this is a really good effort! Will be interesting to see how it develops over the years.

I've always felt like sports games *should* have 'input lag'. It's in quotation marks because it is isn't really input lag as usually understood. Animation lag is a more accurate term.
And it should be there because you're controlling human beings who do not turn, run, and move their body on a dime. Depending on how a player is positioned, it *should* take some amount of time to get them to do a certain action. At least in a game that wants to be closer to a simulation.
The person playing having to account for this makes the gameplay deeper. Ideally this should also extend to how the game plays. For example, a player who's body isn't positioned right shouldn't be able to make a strong, accurate pass, shooting should be less accurate depending on how comfortably the player is positioned and so on.
I think animation *should* govern how a sports game plays and players should adjust. Unless you want arcadey gameplay.
It should be fun though, I shouldn't feel like I'm turning a bus or I concede because my player is moving in the wrong direction. I do agree with you but there needs to be a balance. If I don't feel in control of my players, it hardly relates to fun and it would definitely be difficult to call this a sim in current form.
I felt it was like an early version of the current FIFA game, not a fan of that kind of gameplay anyways, the biggest thing for me was that passing felt weird and lacked lots of realism. Still curious to see what they make it into though!

Imo it was impressive for the first open beta and I expected much less. This game has the chance to hit the sweetspot between EAFC and eFootball in terms of gameplay, which would be quite perfect imo. Passing, defending and some of the ball physics need to be improved, but the potential is huge. I also felt that clunkiness at first, but what I noticed was that the game puts a way bigger emphasis on footwork. Every single step matters, since you can't just artificially change directions. Once I laid off that EAFC / eFootball mindset of being able to turn my players almost instantly, the gameplay clicked for me.
The gameplay is good? As long as for the good gameplay is just enough for me
This Thursday will decide if Konami cares about players like you and me. I'm hoping that you can start making content on it again
konami won't until Efootball 25 but efootblll is just becoming EA FC now with all the cards and scripting its a real shame.
the one thing that bugs me is how rigid GKs are in 1v1 scenarios. they don't seem to care which makes 1v1s so one-sided for the striker

The best way to combat unnecessary possession should be well thought out team pressing tactics not gameplay tempering. The gameplay should be left untempered with as much as possible.
Honestly, this game made me appreciate eFootball gameplay that much more, especially the little things like player id, ball physics, random skill passes, player play styles etc. eFootball can actually become the best game out there if they make the gameplay more manual with more tactical input and change the menus and include better objectives.
Totally agree - but you need on the fly tactics such as telling your team to press forward or something.

It's not terrible. Definite potential there. I was a bit shocked at how unresponsive the game is, but that miight just be because your starting squad is so shite lol.
I would love an offline vs CPU mode or/and a training mode. My first game was against someone who'd obviously played it before, and I had no idea what I was doing.
Will I be playing this upon full release? Probably, but as it stands I don't see myself playing it a lot over time.
I thought so too, but as I acquired more players like Maghaels and Vini Jnr it still felt pretty bad
Accurate review. Yes,it has potential and the graphics are nice. I didn't like it though,too similar to some old FIFA's,too arcade like. No way is this a football simulation and I really don't want a FIFA clone. But this is a Beta version so it's worth revisiting at a later date.

I just hope there is some sort of offline play, like a master league style set up in the final product. I thought general game play was OK, though there was lag in shooting and some of the passing was a little unpredictable

I believe 100% that this game will compete with FIFA in the future. They are soooo similar. The replays, tactics, gameplay etc. is the same. I even think given more time and experience the game would be better than EA's. The player movement though similar is less erratic than EA's.
They said this game will be 100℅ competitive without pay to win or scripting If this is true this will be very good and I might switch from e football to this, as I dont care about some errors in gameplay as much as I care about competitive side and at least the adding of an offline decent mode
Sometimes it just randomly knocks the ball away when running and the defending needs work. For me through balls were all over the shop sometimes great, sometimes shocking. I do like the menus and the stadiums that I've tried. The stats make no sense it's like they don't watch football Bouba is a CDM yet has a position thing for CAM and Turbo Timo as his nickname suggests is known for his pace yet only got 70 I get they had to boost Cristiano as he's the face of it but he ain't that good definitely not miles better then Lewa whom is apparently on par with Jackson. It's pretty good gameplay for a beta but I just don't know why Ashley Young is white in game
Hello, friend. Well, I haven't played UFL, but from what I see here, the gamestyle looks like FIFA more than anything else, as the dev team is based on FIFA - which is something that we expected from the beginning. The looks are alike FIFA, the presentation has many common points, but the gameplay is far better than that of FIFA, as for E-Football, we cannot even enter in a comparison... As I'm not wholly against the presentation of FIFA, I would welcome UFL if it had offline mode, with forming custom cups, championships and everything we all like (Master League analogue, for example). Though what I see is only an online mode, of which I don't have good experience and I might sound biased, thus, for not provoking anything negative before even the full form released, I will not speak. If we have an offline mode of any kind, then with the image and gameplay that I see we will be better - not good, as a lot of things are missing, with Spoony noting more than me. But it has potential and my eeys will watch on its development. Have a nice time.

Ive played it, gameplay is... dodgy but honestly better than FC 24 in some ways, though passing is far too assisted for me. Not too shabby for a first game + beta

@@SL0409 Its not that its accurate 100% of the time, but you find that players make stupid passes that just shouldnt be possible, especially with the power they put on it. It chooses your power pretty much all the time and you never need to look at the power bar, and it just pings it across every now and again

i admire your review but the point of defending and keeping the call over your defensive line shouldn't be a prob we see teams in real life keeping the ball defensively for as long as possible and yes they are prompt to mistakes but these is a game and e don't expect perfection
RATHER WHAT I WOULD EXPECT IS A MECHANISIM WHERE THE ATTACKING TEAM CAN LINE UP OR PRESS WITH UP TO 4 PLAYS OR MORE DEPENDING ON THE PLAYER STYLE OF PLAY

actually i like to play a diffrent football game
The game feels like an Alpha rather than Beta at this point. Though that's what a beta is for and hopefully the devs are going to listen and not be disheartened with the actual hate and no constructive criticism it's getting at the moment. A lot of the issues could be server based, though, as the gameplay feels slow and unresponsive.
• Tackling needs improved, feels really unresponsive, and very little follow through to actually come away with the ball. Seems as though players have no aggression at all.
• Shooting needs a complete overhaul. Feels like it's a lottery at times. Doesn't seem to go where I'm aiming at all.
• Passing is fine for the most part, need the power and speed adjusted just IMO. Every pass feels like it's going toward the right player I'm aiming for so no accuracy issues.
• Set pieces need reworked entirely. Free kicks are too easy to hit the target (top corner). Pens are too quick (ball aim) for high skilled pen takers, will try lower skilled players today. Corners are basic, have no complaints, I would like to see something new, though.
• Animations need to be polished, whether it's keepers diving erratically or players jumping for corners, they look way off and cartoonish.
• Menus and UI are slow and sluggish but seem to be going in the right direction. Everything looks very well polished but just needs to be more responsive.
I think the game has a lot of potential and we all need a proper fifa rival but at this point it feels like it won't be this year. I HOPE I AM WRONG THOUGH.

It's a mix between PES and FIFA. I think it's promise too, but exactly like you say, there's a long way to improve things. But it's better then EA FC for now in most of aspects. MUCH better. At least players act like real people with real movement limitations. Not all time, but most of the time.
Been playing this since the closed beta and it has improved slightly...ever so slightly. The game has so many issues, it's not an enjoyable football game as it is. Sadly, it is very much a FIFA clone, which so many people expected. Yes it's free to play, but we need more, and something different. Won't be touching this at launch.

I still give this a try if it brings fun for me then its a good game I find UFL is making a football that makes people play together then trying to be realistic like EA and Konami
I liked it overall, hated it at times, but there is something there. I liked the prestige point mechanic which made it harder to sign top players and would like something like that built into a master/solo league. By and large I liked a lot of the UI and experience. Very well done. Through passing is a nightmare but needs some tweaks, but I'd consider buying it in the absence of a master league for e-football and just how bland and boring FDC24 manager career mode is.

They've took some things away already. I played a closed beta 12 months ago and it had a chemistry system (called synergy i think)
Theyve scrapped that, the ratings have all changed aswell

Honest review. I thought I will be the only one who doesn't like the game.
In the meantime in the world of eFootball...
Yesterday I noticed something. Normally I am using a ring displayed around the selected player. I am expecting it to help me to define direction of passes since I am using pass level 4. Anything below that I find to be useless because of the way the game works right now. I would much rather be the reason why my passes are inaccurate than to have no control over it as it gets assisted by AI. Also, normally I use that triangle cursor display above active player head. Everything else I keep off (stamina gauge above player head, player names, and all that stuff that sits in the bottom corner of the screen since it often blocks my view).
Here comes the twist.
Yesterday I also tried to turn off mentioned stuff that I normally keep on. It seems that somehow my PS5 is getting less hot with all cursor stuff turned off, even the game feels smoother.
Do you have any experience with this?

The only experience i have with efootball is when i start efootball my Xbox series X becomes a vacuum cleaner XD
The vent is going crazy when i play Efootball its like my series X barely cant handle it and the vent is going very loud and fast. But only Efootball if i play Overwatch or any other game my box is silence.
Maybe i have to accept that efootball and hes next gen graphics especially the crowd is to hard to handle for my xbox XD

I don't think high graphics are the reason for it. I think the game is highly unoptimized. Probably they just kept adding new chunks of code to the older ones when creating new versions of the game. Can you try to turn off all the cursor marks (under graphics and controller section) and then attempt to play the game to see if your Xbox runs any cooler. In my case the PS5 air outlet seemed to be cooler.
I have also played other titles on PS5 that seem to be far more graphically demanding than eFootball and they run nice and cold, so it must be the coding issue.

Turn it off and then two me can you feel the difference.
It is difficult to orientate without it, but I think it helps for some reason.
I think it is in the controller settings
So I keep it all off, except the cursor that serves to indicate to what player you will be switched onto it you press the change player button, so there is no indication of whatsoever for selected player. It seems it is impossible to play like this, but it can be done. It's a harsh truth we need to accept. In terms of gameplay, no other game will ever be close to Efootball. It's so frustrating that Konami is such a shitty company, considering the advantage they have. If they could make their competitive mode more interesting, including coop divisions, tournaments, a transfer market, and tactics customization, many of which they had in the past, they would be the perfect football game.

spot on... the gameplay must be fixed, defending and attacking is almost like you have no control. Players can also turn 370 and pass like FIFA i hate that. I wish the gameplay was more like PES 2019 or PES 2021. i Think that is the way to attack FIFA. if you make a graphical good game but the gameplay is so weak then you just made another FIFA, and why would we buy UFL if it is just like FIFA? then we can just buy FIFA.

I just do not understand this world EFOOTBALL focus is on gameplay tweaking it for 2 years and do not focus on the graphics. then you have UFL that focus on the graphics and not the gameplay. I think UFL has potential like you said, but they really need to make a game that does not look like FIFA, yet they copy almost everything. Why no camera cut scenes from within the crowd? why no cutscene where the bus comes in.. do something to POP out then all the FIFA players will come to UFL. I really had hope but after playing the BETA for 2 hours i noticed this just exactly like FIFA. It almost looks like when ALIEXPRESS makes a FAKE FC25 lol

It's not valid in a video game because your own AI can't co-ordinate as a team properly to understand how to defeat a such a lame tactic. And you cant tell them to either.
That's fine... Playstyle simulation would only be in its infancy, if I would venture to speculate. Nevermind, how many different games are out there, the traditional leaders EA/Konami don't risk alienating everyone with a choice of arcade or simulation on steroids.
However, like Spoony has said a lot of folks still waiting on simulation could as well go out and play. Also in fairness to what the gameplay should offer in terms of keeping away possession, or tiki-taka playstyle, Spoony would have mentioned it as a sensibly low point in his experience of the beta (controller in hand) without mentioning his coping with input lag completely gone within the same gameplay, no? Most folks who are testing Beta, who could be interested in UFL might look to research gameplay into areas as he described. But then we should come to our own conclusions on the controls by ourselves.
I just wanted to touch on that discussion point because I don't look forward to using all my anti-sweat devices in online eFootball league to nick a result or win the ball fairly.
Yet I would gladly dive into a myLeague-like single player mode with flexible difficulty, and again a chance to beat the game. I wouldn't mind skills training like in the olden days as a neat addition, though I could do without the 'Re-play' last 5 secs not just a super cancel feature to actually influence the outcome by rewinding time.
Well, there needs to be a mechanic to allow you to push your team up and press as a unit. Not only able to select one player to chase a ball where a ball is misplaced. Old versions of PES had the mechanic I spoke of. Scoring a goal after 20 passes in PES3 or PES4 would be nearly impossible.
@@SpoonyPizzas does every team in football play pressing ? No, you need different styles it's about adapting to the style and beating a player based on this adaptation which is what real football is. If someone is passing it around a lot, try and see where they pass it to and intercept the pass.

It hasn't changed at all since the closed beta, so my review from March still holds up. You've pretty much echoed my sentiments here Spoons. It's a Fifa clone, in every department. And a long way off being playable, at that. EA might be worried with about 3 or 4 more years (if Strikerz Inc lasts that long) of development, but Konami certainly are not worried about this. I can't see any eFootball / PES legacy players (with half a brain) that would be interested in UFL, unless it's purely out of spite / disgruntlement. It's a no from me. 👋🏻

a long way to compete with EA FC? no way. the gameplay in UFL is already better in a lot of aspects than EA fc. if you are talking about for offline carer mode and things like that then of course but in terms of which game has better gameplay and plays more like real football then UFL is already ahead of it. that's no doubt about that. this UFL game has the best tackling ever made in any football game to date and also the best referees I ever seen in ever in a football game. I seriously can't believe it for a first ever football game in beta stages. it's sad really that it has gameplay already that beats EA FC. love the buildup play and passing as well. i can control every game I want with tactics that matter. something that is useless in EA FC and efootball alot of times. in those games it's more about a few metas more and tactic variety hardly matters. and the best of all I have not seen any EA or Konami fucking ai assistance scripting that gives other players the momentum in matches. this is the first time in a football game that it's well balanced and flow with no AI cheats or EA or konmi late goals. there is no AI boosted assistance and the manual defending is better than both EA and Konami as well. I went 11-3-3 last night. probably the most fun I had with a football game since the old PES6 days. I never even heard of this developer before or never expected anything with this game but I would prefer to play 1 v 1 online in UFL beta than both EA FC FUT or eFootball dream at the current moment which I also play both of those.. for me it offers something different to both and more balanced fair gameplay with also better connections than both EA FC and Efootball online. some of your complains about pressing is what I like that you can't just button match and use AI assistance to get the ball back. there is second man press but it's not as heavy AI assisted like the other games so you can do better buildup and possession based style in this game which gives it more back possession balanced better than EA FC and Efootball in that regard. I think you should play more. I felt the sluggish with passing when I first played but once I got use to it i'm don't notice that. the momentum is more sim like in this regard when compared with EA. both EA and konami need to copy UFL when it comes to fouls. UFL is the best at that.. also with tackling. best tackling footballg ame ever

Honestly even though the game has a long way to go, the way they are doing things is interesting and the game has early signs of promise. Most importantly the develops very clearly care about the game and more important communicate with players.
The moment this game releases I’ll be uninstalling Efootball and putting my time into giving as much feedback as possible on this game.
Give me a half finished UFL with devs that listen than the mess that Koinami are giving us.
