I've been able to clear using the combination of Valsalva and Toynbee method (simultaneously) with great results. The Otovent appears to accomplish the same thing with less effort. I just purchased this and used it a few times along with your video. I struggle to take the water, so I will have to get some straws, because it's not really doing much without being able to swallow more. I have had issues with my left ear for over 7 years now. It started with thrush, then a few ear infections and seemed to be messed up after that! Every time I get a cold or some nasty virus, it clogs up for a week to three weeks. Of course this impacts my ability to work and do daily tasks!!! I have allergies too and take a good antihistamine for that. Sometimes pressure changes make me dizzy and I have tinnitus in that ear most of the time. I just had a nasty upper respiratory infection and my left ear has been clogged for over 2 weeks. I was deaf and there was intense pressure and pain. I got a steroid spray from a doctor and I had been doing nasal steams with Olbas oil. Now I can hear again (like 80%) and there is no pain, but the ear's still "squishy" as I like to describe it. Over the years the ENT doctors I saw just put the camera up my nose and told me "Everything looks fine" I gave up trying to figure out what was wrong, but was convinced I had ETD. Anyways thanks for this :)

Hi Doc About 3 months ago I blew my nose very hard and both ears hurt. They didn’t pop like they would on a plane. I could still hear perfectly fine but they hurt. I already had occasional ringing in both ears before that happened. I was careful ever since when blowing. Then a month later my ears got worse, had given me lots of dizziness and nausea ever since. I have an inner ear infection and 3 lots of antibiotics. A blood test confirmed last week I still have an infection. I finish my last lot of antibiotics tomorrow. When the doc looks through my ears he can never find any wax, any fluid etc, but when I move my ears I can hear lots of fluid in the middle ear canal that’s just not draining at all(no matter how many techniques I do to open up the Eustachian tube). The doctor has referred me to see an ENT specialist but getting an early appointment here is a nightmare. I bought this product but I’m very sceptical about trying it. My hearings never once went deaf but I need to get back to work soon and scared the fluid doesent drain. A infection just very well may return. Do you think I should use this or wait until the infection has fully healed? I would hate to try it when the tube may be damaged or whatever. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
Did you have any luck? Sounds like I have the same issues as you. Trying all sorts of nose sprays and other things becayee ENTs seem pretty useless. I'll have to try this. Will report back
My issue with this is that I can’t swallow once I have it inflated. It’s like the pressure is too much and it deflates before I can. Hopefully I’ll get it with practice
Fill the balloon with air, pinch it close with your fingers, take a big swallow of water and hold it in your mouth, hold your breath a second, let the air in (it will go in slowly and your will feel the air going into both of your ears because it's all connected) and then swallow while letting the air out too. You will make a hilarious burping sound. When my ears are full of fluid, I do this ever couple of hours until the fluid is gone. Take a couple of days usually.
@@hadioden5420 after a few days I finally got it to work and within a few days of using it I was totally fluid free! Keep trying. It gets easier the more you use it I realized, just takes a ton of practice
Hi Dr shellenberger, I'm having an awful time, my ears feel heavy, I'm dizzy and the pressure is awful. But the symptom that I find the worst is when I speak it sounds in my head like my voice is disappearing, I've had this for about 5 weeks now, I'm waiting for an ENT appointment which can take months here in the UK. Does this sound normal ? Also I've just ordered this balloon and worried about the air getting stuck and adding to the pressure, is this possible ? Thanks Paul
Hi dr. Shellenberger, I,ve problems with my ears for the last 2,3 years now and weird sensations in my head like I,m drunk and dizzy. Also problems breathing and notice my left nosewing pulls vacuum while deep inhaling. Both eardrums are withdrawn. There is fluid behind the left drum and there is ringing. I tried flyxonase drops but it made the symptoms worse. Now they want to place tubes but I,m scared. I had tubes from the age 5 till 21(15 times) and there is a lot of scar tissue left. I,m 51 now. Do tubes damage the drums even more? How many times can you even pierce the drums without damage? Can I try this balloon instead of tubes?

Hi doctor, i have hyperacusis & misophonia all my life. Its been curse & blessing. When On Jan this year, someone blast off his phone speaker near me, made my ears in pain, numb, ringing, clogged up & stuffed. All my left side from ear, nose & throat feels numb & clogged up, throats hurt. Only 2 weeks after that went to ent, told me the wind cant get passed through (left ear - sensitive one), got meds for 2 weeks, went again, told me the wind can passed through now. But when I told him it still feels the same, he told me to go to big hospital, just like he abandoned me. In June, I got slapped repeatedly also on my left ear, which makes it worse. Been to audiologist, test, normal. Been in several meds including eardrops, meds & injection for nerve, antibiotics, inflammation, etc. Early this month, it feels like I got the sensitivity back, not clogged up anymore, but just this week, its back to square one. Didnt even wanna talk cause it feels like I talk under water? Makes me feels dizzy. When I try to yawn @ burp, it feels like the wind/air got stuck & couldnt get out too, which makes it hurt. Wish someone could help me. Its taking toll on my physical & mental health too. Been crying myself to sleep all this time. Before, I got anxious & couldnt sleep bcause of the sensitivity to sound. Now, anxious & also couldnt sleep bcause I cant hear like I used to..☹️
I had a bad cold when I was 13 and ended up blowing my nose too hard causing a hole in my ear drum which was extremely painful. How do I ensure I don’t do the same thing when trying to blow up the balloon?

@@margosugitachi9693 I got it and I tried it. It hurt really bad, but in a relieving, good way. My ear has felt less clogged and hasn't made thumping sounds as much since. I still having ringing.. No one knows why I had an ETD, but I saw another ENT Friday and none have been really helpful, and he hadn't heard of this device.

Even with my mouth I couldn't get the stupid balloon to blow up.. Did you hear your ear(s) pop? Did your ETD just come out of the blue? I was told no fluid, no wax how about you. I'm going to see another ENT on the 15th but I know they won't help me. :( This is so maddening. I have to admit I'm still worried that if I try this device it will make things worse. Hi, thanks for this video. I have ETD and my ears are very sensitive to changes in air pressure. I used the otovent back in January but didn't see any improvement, in fact I feel that it made my ears worse and the crackling and popping sounds became louder and more noticable. I do however feel that this occurred because I wasn't using it properly. I simply blew up the balloon with my nose but did not let the air go back up my nose whilst swallowing. As you said in the video this probably made the muscles around my eustation tube tighten up. What do you think? From today I'm giving it a second go but this time I will be sure to let the air go back up my nose whilst swallowing.
I think it’s reasonable to try it out for at least a week and see if you see any improvement. You’re not alone though in complaining that it did not have as much of an effect as you hoped. It’s not a perfect cure.
How did it go? Ive used it for 3 days and my ears feel weird. Like there is too much air in them and mine didnt pop. Id say mine is probly worse now too. Bloody frustrating

Hi, I have eustachian tube issues, I have constant popping in my ears very noticeable when I put my hands over my ears or lay down, I do have fluid in my ears. Would this help?
I haven’t seen any patients develop patulous eustachian tube issues with using otovent. Also haven’t seen any research showing that that could be a side effect.

Hi! I'm using this for the first time tonight and can't find in the instructions that you're supposed to let the air go up your nose. Is that part of the way it works? Cause I accidentally did it and it freaked me out, haha.
@Jim Spencer Yeah there’s no guarantee that otovent is going to work. There’s research that shows that it can help, but certainly it’s not a magic cure.

How it makes peoples ears feel can vary. I’d keep using it for maybe a week or two if it doesn’t hurt too much. A lot of times it does take a little bit of time to see the eustachian tubes open up and feel like they’ve popped.
@@dr.shellenberger9830 did the air go all the way through for you? The air goes all the way in but then has no where to go and the balloon stops pushing air in because its full. Im swallowing with water but does not happen for me.
@@skillsmachine9164 the point is not to have it feel like they pop every time. The point of using otovent is to exercise and dilate the Eustachian tubes so that they will eventually pop and work well.

@@skillsmachine9164 yeah it’s not guaranteed to be a perfect cure. Getting our ears to feel “just right” is a hard thing. Some patients love Otovent, others say it doesn’t help. But it’s not designed to be just done a few times and fix all the ear problems.
I don't feel the air in my ears. It goes from one nostril into another. When I swallow the water while letting the air in nothing happens to my ears. The only time I feel air pressure change is when I blow the balloon up.
I can open my tubes I just don’t seem to drain what’s behind my eardrum. Iv used this and one day it seemed to add bubbles to the fluid behind my eardrum and not much else . I have an otoscope that I can use to see it myself . Tried using them again today but didn’t even get bubbles or much of an effect . My worry is I am a musician and the idea of cutting my eardrum really worries me. Certainly it must cause scar tissue and that tissue must not let the eardrum move as it wouldn’t normally this affect the way I would hear sound? Iv heard people say they’ve had issues with the survey to drain the ear and others say they were fine of hearing but honestly they aren’t musicians and don’t have developed ears so it’s tough to know if cutting the ear drum would affect hearing frequencies in a certain way, also there true recovery time . Some people say 3 days and I highly doubt the recovery will only be 3 days and I haven’t seen pictures of healed eardrums after the surgey, I wouldn’t want mine being some way collapsed or not rounded like it is now . Iv wondered if trying to shoot a little liquid of the estuchian tubes would soften and help remove the substance behind ear drum . I doubt it’d get stuck or be any worse . I can open my tubes . I wish someone would simply invent a small vacuum to go up the estuchian tube and pull the mucus out . I mean they already shove a tube fairly high for the tuboplasty procedure. I don’t get why that same type of device can’t be made with a hollow pipe that can go higher up and slurp out the issue .
@@dr.shellenberger9830 Hi, I once again went to an ENT yesterday and was told no fluid, no wax, ears look healthy. Hearing test showed normal pressure! I asked then why won't my ears open or unclog. I really can't live like this. All she said is sometimes we just don't know..... Have you seen this happen in some of your patients. :( This is my fifth month of this awful problem!!
@@margosugitachi9693 I actually see this all the time. I believe that eustachian tube issues can cause a sensation of fullness and pressure in the ears even when all the tests are normal. I would try a nasal steroid spray, like Flonase, which you can get over-the-counter. I would also try Otovent as well.
@@dr.shellenberger9830 Thanks for responding. I actually have tried Flonase as prescribed by my first ENT. Did it for more than a couple months. It did nothing. All the medications that the ENT'S have told me to try haven't made any difference. I've tried the Neti Pot, antihistamines, pseudoephedrine, Nasalcrom, singular, and on and on. I've been to 2 dentists, TMJ Specialist, Primary Care MD, PT, upper cervical chiropractor, craniosacral therapy..... :( I just woke up one day in late January with my right ear clogged. Two months later my left ear clogged. I've had on and off deep ear pain, and on and off ringing but mostly on the right side only. I wasn't sick before this happened. This has truly ruined my life. I never knew a problem like this even existed? The one thing I keep coming back to is in August of 2020 I fell out of bed. I hit my right hip and while trying to catch myself I came down hard on my 2 front teeth on my small marble nightstand. I reached up and was surprised to find my 2 teeth still there and not loose. I went back to bed and the next morning I felt fine. So about 5 months later the nightmare with my ear started. I can't help but think it's related. It's really hard to find a doctor who actually cares to help you figure your situation out and get to the root cause. Instead your left in despair, and trying to be your own doctor and detective. @@margosugitachi9693 hey Margo, that really sounds awful. It sounds like you’ve done a very thorough job of trying to get your ears to work well and not give you so much trouble. I usually would consider a treatment called a myringtotomy if someone had constant pressure and had failed many other treatments.
With T tubes or grommets, you really shouldn’t need to use it, because the air space underneath the eardrum should have equal pressure with the ambient pressure. But If you do use it, you might find that you blow air out of your ears. It shouldn’t hurt things, though.
@@dr.shellenberger9830 thanks for reply I have t tubes in had them in for years. This set are new 18 months old but just had an ear infection in my right ear. I now feel like my ear has loads of fliud in it and can't get rid of it. Had antibiotics what would your advise be?
@@dr.shellenberger9830 I really struggle taking ear drops as they block the tubes. Do you think I need a new right t tube?. Or should I have then taken out let the holes heal and try this product,
@@adamuk6810 drops shouldn’t block the tubes. There is a little bump in front of the ear, called the tragus (google it). After you put the drops in, push on the tragus 3-4 times. That should push the drops through the tubes. Otherwise, really to give good advice about your ears, I’d want to do a good exam. I consider otovent to be a more conservative treatment than tubes. If tubes aren’t working, I wouldn’t necessarily think that otovent would be a “magic cure”. Wish I had better news.

Does this help unplug ears even if you don't have fluid in them? I have no fluid but my ears clog throughout the day and it's miserable

@@passingby3060 Sadly not. I found de contestants and steam inhalations helped though. The pain went away and I can hear again after a few weeks.

@@SaNNie73 short answer: you can always try Otovent, but given your symptoms, I doubt that it alone would fix everything.
It doesn't deflate back in the nose and swallowing. Does that mean my Eustachian tube is completely blocked?

I used the otovent back in January but didn't see any improvement, in fact I feel that it made my ears worse and the crackling and popping sounds became louder and more noticable. I do however feel that this occurred because I wasn't using it properly. I simply blew up the balloon with my nose but did not let the air go back up my nose whilst swallowing. As you said in the video this probably made the muscles around my eustation tube tighten up. What do you think? From today I'm giving it a second go but this time I will be sure to let the air go back up my nose whilst swallowing.
I think it’s reasonable to try it out for at least a week and see if you see any improvement. You’re not alone though in complaining that it did not have as much of an effect as you hoped. It’s not a perfect cure.
How did it go? Ive used it for 3 days and my ears feel weird. Like there is too much air in them and mine didnt pop. Id say mine is probly worse now too. Bloody frustrating

About 3 months ago I blew my nose very hard and both ears hurt. They didn’t pop like they would on a plane. I could still hear perfectly fine but they hurt. I already had occasional ringing in both ears before that happened. I was careful ever since when blowing. Then a month later my ears got worse, had given me lots of dizziness and nausea ever since. I have an inner ear infection and 3 lots of antibiotics. A blood test confirmed last week I still have an infection. I finish my last lot of antibiotics tomorrow. When the doc looks through my ears he can never find any wax, any fluid etc, but when I move my ears I can hear lots of fluid in the middle ear canal that’s just not draining at all(no matter how many techniques I do to open up the Eustachian tube). The doctor has referred me to see an ENT specialist but getting an early appointment here is a nightmare. I bought this product but I’m very sceptical about trying it. My hearings never once went deaf but I need to get back to work soon and scared the fluid doesent drain. A infection just very well may return. Do you think I should use this or wait until the infection has fully healed? I would hate to try it when the tube may be damaged or whatever. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

No that’s just a common way to “pop” the ears.
@@dr.shellenberger9830 when i try to yawn or burp, feels like the air got clogged up but couldnt get out, which makes it hurt (only on my left ear). After several accident this year, my left ear in pain, numb, ringing, feels clogged up & stuffy. Also my left nose got stuffed, left throat hurt. From Jan this year until now. Diagnosed with hyperacusis & misophonia before accident.
Hi, I have eustachian tube issues, I have constant popping in my ears very noticeable when I put my hands over my ears or lay down, I do have fluid in my ears. Would this help?

Does this risk causing patulous or a hole in the eardrum if one of my ears pops fine? It’s the other side that doesn’t.
I haven’t seen any patients develop patulous eustachian tube issues with using otovent. Also haven’t seen any research showing that that could be a side effect.

😢Today my first day using this tool , I did all that in both ways for both ears but non opened, the air stays in the balloon and I feel nothing just pressure of the air trying to escape from my nose 👃 why?

Hi! I'm using this for the first time tonight and can't find in the instructions that you're supposed to let the air go up your nose. Is that part of the way it works? Cause I accidentally did it and it freaked me out, haha.

Yes, air should go into your nose, up your eustachian tube, and cause your ears to pop.
@Jim Spencer Yeah there’s no guarantee that otovent is going to work. There’s research that shows that it can help, but certainly it’s not a magic cure.

How it makes peoples ears feel can vary. I’d keep using it for maybe a week or two if it doesn’t hurt too much. A lot of times it does take a little bit of time to see the eustachian tubes open up and feel like they’ve popped.
@@dr.shellenberger9830 did the air go all the way through for you? The air goes all the way in but then has no where to go and the balloon stops pushing air in because its full. Im swallowing with water but does not happen for me.
@@skillsmachine9164 the point is not to have it feel like they pop every time. The point of using otovent is to exercise and dilate the Eustachian tubes so that they will eventually pop and work well.

@@skillsmachine9164 yeah it’s not guaranteed to be a perfect cure. Getting our ears to feel “just right” is a hard thing. Some patients love Otovent, others say it doesn’t help. But it’s not designed to be just done a few times and fix all the ear problems.

I don't feel the air in my ears. It goes from one nostril into another. When I swallow the water while letting the air in nothing happens to my ears. The only time I feel air pressure change is when I blow the balloon up.
I can open my tubes I just don’t seem to drain what’s behind my eardrum. Iv used this and one day it seemed to add bubbles to the fluid behind my eardrum and not much else .
I have an otoscope that I can use to see it myself . Tried using them again today but didn’t even get bubbles or much of an effect . My worry is I am a musician and the idea of cutting my eardrum really worries me. Certainly it must cause scar tissue and that tissue must not let the eardrum move as it wouldn’t normally this affect the way I would hear sound?
Iv heard people say they’ve had issues with the survey to drain the ear and others say they were fine of hearing but honestly they aren’t musicians and don’t have developed ears so it’s tough to know if cutting the ear drum would affect hearing frequencies in a certain way, also there true recovery time . Some people say 3 days and I highly doubt the recovery will only be 3 days and I haven’t seen pictures of healed eardrums after the surgey, I wouldn’t want mine being some way collapsed or not rounded like it is now .
Iv wondered if trying to shoot a little liquid of the estuchian tubes would soften and help remove the substance behind ear drum . I doubt it’d get stuck or be any worse . I can open my tubes .
I wish someone would simply invent a small vacuum to go up the estuchian tube and pull the mucus out . I mean they already shove a tube fairly high for the tuboplasty procedure. I don’t get why that same type of device can’t be made with a hollow pipe that can go higher up and slurp out the issue .

The otovent should not have any side effects. Would be perfectly reasonable to try in a patient who has problems popping their ears but has no fluid.
@@dr.shellenberger9830 Hi, I once again went to an ENT yesterday and was told no fluid, no wax, ears look healthy. Hearing test showed normal pressure! I asked then why won't my ears open or unclog. I really can't live like this. All she said is sometimes we just don't know..... Have you seen this happen in some of your patients. :( This is my fifth month of this awful problem!!
@@margosugitachi9693 I actually see this all the time. I believe that eustachian tube issues can cause a sensation of fullness and pressure in the ears even when all the tests are normal. I would try a nasal steroid spray, like Flonase, which you can get over-the-counter. I would also try Otovent as well.
@@dr.shellenberger9830 Thanks for responding. I actually have tried Flonase as prescribed by my first ENT. Did it for more than a couple months. It did nothing. All the medications that the ENT'S have told me to try haven't made any difference. I've tried the Neti Pot, antihistamines, pseudoephedrine, Nasalcrom, singular, and on and on. I've been to 2 dentists, TMJ Specialist, Primary Care MD, PT, upper cervical chiropractor, craniosacral therapy..... :( I just woke up one day in late January with my right ear clogged. Two months later my left ear clogged. I've had on and off deep ear pain, and on and off ringing but mostly on the right side only. I wasn't sick before this happened. This has truly ruined my life. I never knew a problem like this even existed? The one thing I keep coming back to is in August of 2020 I fell out of bed. I hit my right hip and while trying to catch myself I came down hard on my 2 front teeth on my small marble nightstand. I reached up and was surprised to find my 2 teeth still there and not loose. I went back to bed and the next morning I felt fine. So about 5 months later the nightmare with my ear started. I can't help but think it's related. It's really hard to find a doctor who actually cares to help you figure your situation out and get to the root cause. Instead your left in despair, and trying to be your own doctor and detective. @@margosugitachi9693 hey Margo, that really sounds awful. It sounds like you’ve done a very thorough job of trying to get your ears to work well and not give you so much trouble. I usually would consider a treatment called a myringtotomy if someone had constant pressure and had failed many other treatments.
Can i use this product with T tubes or grommets my ears got loads of fliud in. I have t tubes was wondering if this could help.
With T tubes or grommets, you really shouldn’t need to use it, because the air space underneath the eardrum should have equal pressure with the ambient pressure. But If you do use it, you might find that you blow air out of your ears. It shouldn’t hurt things, though.
@@dr.shellenberger9830 thanks for reply I have t tubes in had them in for years. This set are new 18 months old but just had an ear infection in my right ear. I now feel like my ear has loads of fliud in it and can't get rid of it. Had antibiotics what would your advise be?
@@adamuk6810 if the tubes are open, ear drops are usually more effective than antibiotics by mouth.
@@dr.shellenberger9830 I really struggle taking ear drops as they block the tubes. Do you think I need a new right t tube?. Or should I have then taken out let the holes heal and try this product,
@@adamuk6810 drops shouldn’t block the tubes. There is a little bump in front of the ear, called the tragus (google it). After you put the drops in, push on the tragus 3-4 times. That should push the drops through the tubes.
Otherwise, really to give good advice about your ears, I’d want to do a good exam. I consider otovent to be a more conservative treatment than tubes. If tubes aren’t working, I wouldn’t necessarily think that otovent would be a “magic cure”. Wish I had better news.
