It's hard to believe how much a simple three-chord pattern, played over and over, can be so hypnotizing. The last several minutes of the tune are perfect if you're a frustrated guitarist looking for something cool to solo over. Brilliant song!
He was no accomplished musician which seemed to suit him. His love of Abba, Sweet and the Glitter Band which gave simple yet euphoric music to the masses mixed with the grandiose Steinman elements, which Eldritch liked from his work with Bonnie Tyler, turned the old Goth crowd against him. He wrote most of the lyrics while still fucked up on speed while a member of the original Sisters. I started out to just agree with your post but got carried away. Sorry. 🙂
Life at the steelworks in Bremen on a summernight like tonight with 26°C at 10 past 10pm and me in my thirties. Works in my 60s just fine! Age is just an entry in a calendar.
Brilliant. The most popular goths that hated their goth tag but still sounded more goth than the goth bands of that era. I could listen to Sisters of Mercy and Bauhaus all day.
Saw your comment and had to say - I'm constantly hearing Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy, more and more in current music. These two bands informed much of my early music taste and I still regularly listen to them.
Floodland is such a fantastic album. Being a huge fan of electronica, and some rock, this album kinda felt really unique. The album flows so well. Goth rock, classical, ambient, sad, hopeful, and totally immersive all at the same time. Loved it when I first heard it, and nothing has changed and it will never leave my play list.
In 1987 I was painting the garden fence at my grandpa and grandma. And I was listening to Floodland the whole time. Best album of the century! RIP Grandpa & Grandma!
I was a doorman at Excess in Houston in the late 80's. Thanks to Brian, the DJ, this club was always rocking great music like this. Industrial in the 80's was the best! That time, in those clubs, including Avalon, 6400, The Ocean Club, Yucatan Liquor Stand...nothing like it!
Oh damn how I've missed you my sweet....this music and everything else that came of age in the 80's and early 90's are truely one of a kind. Never before, after or ever again could the stars align to create such a perfect menagerie. Those days for me, were filled with optimism, love, angst, trepidation and an unwavering look to the future, everything else in between was....driving way to fast with a license at 14, going to party's my parents didn't know about, dancing dancing dancing and experimenting with everything and everyone I could get my hands on. All the while still focused on honor roll, sports and civic leadership....try that all together you generation ????ERS! Haha what a blast it was and what a time I've had as an adult so far...if you can call me that. Cheers everyone listening for the hundredth time or if you're 14.....cuz you just discovered this and are gonna rock the rest of adolescence my friend.
Bless. Discovered these geniuses when the scene was already spent in the early 2000s and created a whole clique of wierdos around me. We kept it going and expanded our worlds and live on.
Revisit once again..now with eyes anew..see the meaning behind the song and unconscious will that propelled us to the now..we danced to it then..we rise to fight now
There was usually a stampede to the dance floor when you heard the first note belt out for this song, in the old days of Chicago Goth. These boys loved Metra/Smart Bar in the 80s and you had a good chance of bumping into Andy and end up buying a round for the Goth movement!
This takes me wayyyy back to the late 80's, early 90's, there was a rock night club in Cape Town called The Playground... We would emerge early hours of the morning from the venue, this being the last song to send us on our way... Oh those were the days!!!
..round about the same time I used to emerge from somewhere in Pretoria/Jo'burg.. not necessarily to Sisters of Mercy 😉 but I was a huge fan even way back then. I could of course go home and wake the neighbours up with an afterparty at 6.00 in the morning 'i sing this corrosion'
Love the bits with the church choirs in the background. Put as it is in the rock context with the singers wonderful voice it is as though they are starting a new religion. Never has the phrase "Hey now" sounded so powerful.
In Valencia, Spain, at the Spiral disco with a mescaline in my body, the only thing that mattered was the moment spent listening to Sister of Mersi. Great moments experienced from an era that will not return due to these turbulent times in which we have to live.

Love this song - Sisters of Mercy had a relatively short period of glory, but incredibly good songs. Best in my view were Temple of Love, Alice, Floorshow, Nine While Nine, Ribbons, 1959, Emma.…and a few more
Got to see Sisters of Mercy at Sick New World. Never thought I would get to see these Goth Legends live! Last set of the night. And this was the last track. It was absolutely magic getting to squeeze my way into the pit and dance to them. What a hell of a way to close the festival!

On days like this
In times like these
I feel an animal deep inside
Heel to haunch on bended knees
Living on if and if I tried
Somebody send me... please...
Dream wars and a ticket to seem
Giving out and in
Selling the don't belong
Well, what do you say
D'you have a word for Giving Away?
Got a song for me?

Why the blood run hold the hired hand
On heart, hand of God
Floodland and Driven Apart
Run cold (Hey now, hey now now)
Turn, cold, burn (like a healing hand)

Yes...the same...gothic, punkers...I feel so young 👍😁
Reminds me of early 90’s club days.
I miss those days big time!!
exactly. I used to spend my saturday nights wtih my friends in a disco near Bergamo (Italy), the legendary Motion Club. One of the peaks of the night, among tons of rock, ska, new wave, was This Corrosion. We were dancing our asses off. Good old times :)
Nearly 40 years on from first listened to the Sisters 🤔 ....

Why the blood cold
I dont know who you are but I'm attracted to your image but just curious in Canada where darkness tended to rule but now the light i emit is so fucking bright i can see through most people like cellophane ? not really !lol
Am I deaf or something? The words are why the blood runs cold from the hired hand. And the words previous to this line proves that. Andy sings very clearly
Why the blood runs cold not hold
One of the iconic tracks of La Guinguette du Rock, the only mythic goth club in the South of France in the mid and late 80's....It was my second house.....
Listened in the 80’s and still listening
