    At the time hair metal was killing the charts. Discharge wanted some of that mainstream success but for such a radical departure from their established sound they probably should have changed the name of the band.

    Everyone says this era was unexpected but I honestly think they're EP Her Magesty hinted at this drastic change.

      I think in hindsight this metal/rock ‘n’ roll style would’ve worked a lot better if Cal didn’t find the need to use king diamond type vocals. He could’ve used just a slightly different vocal delivery (to his early punk roots), and I just think it would’ve worked better.

      @@JohnnyangelNIU If you listen to Massacre divine and shooting up the world he did such course correction. Sounds more like a mixture of his original growling vocals and his high-pitched vocal style.

      @@shittybooze Both are great albums, that is the vocal style Cal should have used with GNW.

    I saw them on this tour - my favorite band, playing the Ritz in NY? Hell yeah! That was until they came out with bright pink, metal looking guitars and Cal prancing around the stage like a prima Donna bitch. They got booed off the stage and a bunch of people (I think HR was involved) threw trash cans on the stage and such. We left quickly. Now, watching this, I think that maybe we were too quick to judge.

      Yea yea, I was there, Ritz NYC. COC, DRI, then Discharge. The singer was spinning around and all that. Fans hated it instantly. They didn't pass as a metal act, what they were going for. It was cringe. If they played with other hair style bands, they had a chance. But the singer couldn't sing this type of metal, it was weak and wimpy sounding. There's an album out of the show and parts from San Fran called Discharge-The east-west live Dis-aster LP.

      That's a cool story, Paul. I think you guys were, but tolerance wasn't a virtue like today lol. Your perspective is definitely the zeitgeist of that time.

    • @palmalahanderson8324

      Yo, I thought you guys were talking about "HR" as in "human resources" like the club wasn't even about it lol
      Edit: And for future reference it's HR the man from the band the Bad Brains.

      @@kaihunlu2345 I read about that after researching this for myself. I can totally understand that sentiment of yours. That must have been quite the experience to witness that first hand. If they didn't have their background and played this it wouldn't have been so much if an issue, but oh-boy did they really do something that is peculiar.

    Some of the comments on here loving this shit!! This is on pile of badly played glam horseshit…. Saw them plenty of times during the early 80’s when they were at their best, but Cal’s falsetto vocals?? Please… 😂😂😂😂😂

    I would really like to know what the fuck they were thinking with the Glam/Brave New World shit. Did they sell out to try to make a bunch of money? Were they truly inspired by the Sunset Strip scene and just had to be a part of it? They went WAY too far into hair metal, it might have worked if the change wasn't so abrupt.

    • @Oni64
      @Oni64 10 років тому +4

      While punks where crossing over to thrash, some bands wanted to ride the Glam Metal wagon. Celtic Frost is guilty of it too, but I dont think it sucked as bad as discharge. Even TSOL flirted with some hard rock in the late 80s albums.

    • @guiltyspark66
      @guiltyspark66 10 років тому +1

      Oni64
      Yup, I remember, I was there, buying records and seeing shows. Celtic was at least already Metal and kind of experimental, so while it sucked, it didn't seem that strange. But to go from political Punk to bad Glam Rock is just a drastic change. I actually like some of Discharge's later Metal records, like Shootin" up The World. When I was a teen getting into Punk I had heard about Discharge and how badass they were and was psyched to hear them. Located a cool looking black and silver LP, took it home and heard falsetto vocals and so forth. I didn't get it, didn't understand why people liked Discharge so much, lol. That LP was Grave New World, ruined me for Discharge till I figured out which stuff to listen to years later.

      guiltyspark66
      The vocals are probably the worse part, if he had used the vocals from the ignorance single, it would have been a much better Grave New World. Shooting up the world was actually pretty good, and massacre divine (except Terror Police) was also tons better than grave new world
