Seeing symbolism everywhere is finding patterns where there was mostly only coincidence. The trick is knowing how to point out the real symbols. Seeing symbolism everywhere is also a great way to add extra lines to a book report. The trick is knowing how to point out the "real" symbols.
No, the trick is that real symbols are indistinguishable from good enough fakes, mostly because the majority of symbols claimed as real are fake to begin with. I wrote three pages of criticism for a two-page story for my literary exam at the end of high school, my teacher underlined two sentences in red saying that's nonsensical and gave me 98%. I was baffled, because I was like "wait, is the rest not?" Since then 451 has been my favorite xkcd.
Just wanted to say your Dear Authors series just popped up as a recommended watch in a writing group I am in on Facebook. It has over 100k people in it and people seem to love it! Hope to see more!

Everyone else tear up when she read the every book's a hidden doorway meme? Just me? 😭 For me, Books+Coffee+Music, but I could probably give up coffee for a very very good Dog. ☺
I know you don’t always do classics, but if you do another I would love to hear your thoughts on War and Peace. I read it recently and was blown away. I always thought it would be a boring dry read, but holy crap was I wrong. It was funny and exciting, and sad, all of the motions, and read really smoothly. Anyway, loved the video and the memes, keep on keepin’ on!
The issue for me wasn't manga-novel it was manga-graphic novel. Cause it took me some mental gymnastics to stop reading the pictures and dialogue right to left. The first couple I read after my manga binge I am fairly sure I misread some stuff.
I actually finished a book today that I got for xmas in 2013. I'm feeling proud. The sequel I got at the same time is still sitting on the shelf though.
It is difficult to be a fan with no local fandom, but I also really wish the books I am writing had a fandom, because some of the details are *so cool*
7:23 my version would be folk of the air themed. Like imagine the gowns and flower crowns, bare feet on the grass and never ending dancing (which if you've read the books know isn't that nice of a thing, but hopefully your new spouse would save you) Edit: also the groom just has to be Cardan. There is no other way.
Nah-uh please don't feel u ain't really "delivering any information" if vids like this are solely for entertainment. I love watching them! They always lighten my mood. Don't have second thoughts on it "being worthy" ...they're totally, undulatingly🙃 worth it!
Books, Tea, Art. I did this with a housemate once who made me go through all the things I loved in a knockout format. We excluded books as too obvious and she only picked more obvious things that she knew I liked. The final was Doctor Who v Chocolate. Doctor Who won.
For the 3 Keeps meme: Books, Music, Art. I read while listening to music and then I doodle scenes that grab me. I only judge covers because if I'm going to spend $20+ on a book I like, it better have a pleasing cover. These were fun to see. Hope thing look up for you. Happy reading!
Your laugh is so contagious! It was so much fun seeing you do something a little bit different and I would love to continue seeing fun ideas like this one. I'm keeping books, tea and music. :D
So far as the glasses in the Harry Potter films go there's likely 2 reasons he's the only one who has them first and foremost is branding you want your audience to see the glasses and think there's Harry, Daniel Radcliffe recently talked about how he's never allowed to wear circular glasses in a movie again because of how recognizable that imagery is, and two glasses are a real pain to shoot around they reflect light and can cause errors that aren't immediately noticeable but might make you have to scrap a good shot in post because the glasses are reflecting the lights too much or showing a random distraction in reflection
8:10 I mean, in all fairness does the Cursed Child really count as a book? I think it would more accurately be described as kindling or a waste of paper.
The reason I keep coming back to your videos is the emotional energy & enthusiasm you put into your reviews. Please never ever change that aspect. I actually look for that in booktube channels. It’s a winning feature 😁
(5:45) I can kinda relate to that, but in my case, I primarily read comics, including graphic novels, but I also read illustrated novels, so I remember having a similar reaction when picking up a book (at a public library) thinking it was an illustrated novel, only to find that it's a regular novel (what you call 'traditional novel'. Even more so if it's from an author I follow for other works they may have done. I have trouble reading large amounts of plain text, due indirectly to what happened in my troubled past. (6:15) This reminds me of when I listened to an audiobook of a graphic novel, while reading a digital print-replica copy. I don't listen to audiobooks on their own, just as an audio track to the print or digital edition. I have the Kobo, Storytel, and Libby apps just to access audiobooks on those platforms, but read digital reflowable text and print-replica editions on my BOOX paper tablet. (6:45) This reminds me of how, when I'm not reading a book, but haven't finished reading it, I'd often think about some of the characters. In one book series I'm reading, one of the lead characters is named 'Max', and I'd often end up thinking about him when I see 'max' (as in 'maximum'). The books are all illustrated novels, and so it also happens that he wears the same style of glasses I wear in real life, and it's also coincidental that the other lead character, who is also the titular character of the series, is named 'Kevin', like I am. A contributing factor to that is the fact that I put aside all the other books I was reading in order to read this, so I can research the series for a fanfiction I'm writing, because the character cameos in something one of the co-authors did not only introduced me to the characters, but also inspired me to write the fanfiction because I dreamt of meeting those characters in person. (8:02) I have the same reaction, though not for books I don't like nor that are in bad condition. I also imagine people pulling books off NLB Public Libraries book exchange shelves (works similarly to bookcrossing and Little Free Library) for that purpose. 😖 if it's a book that I like. (8:18) I can relate to this, because a lot of the books I read are aimed at children, and they're modern books, as in stuff that came out in the past few years, and especially stuff that push boundaries and defy stereotypes to the point where some people try to ban them because they only factored the books they grew up with in the 1970s to 1990s. I somehow find it cool to be reading books that most adults wouldn't be reading. It's usually that I find the plots easier to handle, plus I follow a lot of book illustrators because I like their art styles, and they'd announce books that they had illustrated. On top of that, I follow a number of artists who happen to be furries, and so, for example, I had 'The Bad Guys' series on my TBR for a while, and it was only when DreamWorks posted a preview of their film adaptation that the furry fandom woke up to it and the artists started drawing fan art of the lead characters! This made me realise that most furries don't read books!! I confess: I've dreamt of the furry fandom talking about 'Mr Wolf's Class' and producing fan art, especially of the title character, but it'll likely only really happen if there were a TV or film adaptation of it, like I've seen some people on Twitter mentioned they dreamt of. (8:24) I too have been working on starting my own 'Booktube' channel for the same reason (and several more)! Yes, as part of that, I plan to produce videos talking about specific books and series that I like. (10:27) I can relate! (looks at my dusty (digital) copies of stuff like Mythic Creature Trainer, Dungeon Critters, Agent 9, and more) (10:36) I'm somehow getting 'The Strangeworlds Travel Agency' vibes from that, but only based on the blurbs since I never actually read that series as I have trouble reading regular novels. I'm also reminded of the intro to the original 'Dexter's Laboratory', in which the trick book had a big red button in it. One trope I'm vaguely reminded of is that some of the remote controls the title character would have would just have a grey shell, one big red button, and an RF antenna. (14:55) It's through authors and illustrators I follow on Twitter that I realised that there are not only book editors at publishers, but also book designers, who'd design stuff like the whole cover art, any fancy embellishments to the covers, and I believe they also help with page layouts for print and digital print-replica editions. (15:29) I vaguely remember an illustrator (I think it was Rob Biddulph) posting on Twitter about different cover ideas he had for a book he worked on. (16:24) I feel that way too, for books that have covers and blurbs that are attractive enough to me. It's just that I often get busy and not have enough time to actually read.
'you guys are being read?' ** side-eyes the copy of GRRM'S Fire & Blood that I bought soon as it came out then proceeded to completely ignore in favour of other books **
I don't know if this is a meme, but I find it exhausting to read R.A. Salvatore because whenever he writes dialogue he ends every sentence with an exclamation point. Even generic things like "I'm going to cook eggs for breakfast!" I just find it extremely hard to read a story where everyone is always yelling at each other.
18 :23 , percy does wear glasses and some others I think as well, they just don't wear it in the movies. Thanks for the happy moments, really needed it ❤
Actually... Isn't literary criticism snobbishly fandoming? Like building theories and talking about books. Technically you can still talk like that about books irl, just in academia.
8:28 agree that some books are meant to be discussed or obsessed over, if not integrated into our very life. It's fun hearing other people's interpretations and preferences. And I enjoy your emphatic reactions and personality 👏
The face you make when mentioning Facebook on the last meme is just perfect. Also, I would keep books, coffee and chocolate. Mostly because a day with all three of them is pretty good and I can enjoy them all at the same time

I felt that pronunciation vs spelling one. My brother listens to audiobooks exclusively while I mostly read hardcopies except for the occasional audiobook I borrow from his audible account to listen to while doing chores. When we discuss them he ends up having to correct my pronunciation. Jasnah comes to mind in particular
I'm going to be honest that every book is a doorway part I was just imagining a book shelf where every book was a fake book that opened the secret door and laughed at how dumb but hilarious that would be then you said aw then said I didn't need to explain it and I realized how dumb I am lol
i went to both. its really sweet and emotional, but also, that would be amazing to find in the wild. i would be so incredulous! i would be so confused and i would LOVE how weird that was!
My mind went to the literal door thing immediately, but a split second later, I got the other thing, and then I thought of books flying off shelves and the pages splitting apart and forming the edges of glowing portals that you could step through... so yeah... my mind...
6:55 I'mm so happy to learn it's not only me who sometimes mixes up things that happens in books with my own memories ahahahaha - every time it happens I'm like *nervous sweating* "pull it together fam!!"
books, dogs, music! I relate so much to the read like a sports fan thing and I try REALLY hard to keep the "In the book they actually" comments to myself... at least until the credits.
Nah, the real problem after reading manga is forgetting that the rest of the world reads left to write, so I end up accidentally starting on the last page the next time I read a standard novel. That's usually my 'I'm consuming too much manga again' indicator.
Sabriel came into my life senior year of high school when I was completely burnt out and dreading college. Discovering the rest of the Old Kingdom series was life giving - Lireal is a comfort read. I have only met one other person who had read the book and we had a fantastic conversation!! If there's a fandom out there, someone let me know!!
Books, cats, music. I cannot give up my furbaby. Also, emotional book talk is excellent book talk. People getting passionate about stuff is one of my favorite things.
I don t normally don't fall for characters; they're just words on a page to me (I mean, I care about what happens to them, of course, but it doesn't affect my real life). Except recently I read The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub, and there's one character in there...a Lenny type, who's just so ...good. He shines with goodness. And then he died and I put the book down and cried a little, because he'd made the whole experience better (not just for me, reading it, but for the other characters he interacted with as well).
I love your videos! the part about the classics is soooo true!!! I love classic books! Jane Austen especially! I read Pride and Prejudice in the 7th grade, fully understanding the context! I love books ❤
About seeking sympolism and interpretation, there's a well known story in Poland about a famous poet Wisława Szymborska, who failed an exam consisting of interpretatiing one of her poems. I'm not against learning how to interpret but what bugs me after being forced to do it to tens of poems back in high school is that there's always one key during exams or even teachers often have their own vision so it turns into trying to guess what I'm supposed to say. I understand that designers work hard of making covers but in the end it comes down to personal taste (and for example I think the abstract trend created fugly covers). I won't buy a book with beautiful cover if I don't like the blurb but I will buy a book with an ugly cover if the story sounds interesting. Though of course I'll always try to buy the edition I like best.
That's something I do in real life all time (go on twenty minute rants of a book/series) My roommate likes to point out what my different expressions mean and also especially when writing I will mumble when not realizing but I do it when reading. Often just reading aloud not knowingly
12:56 I am a more physical book reader bc audio books don't work for me. I sometimes can't even remember how to spell a characters name especially when it's a difficult one to spell. I don't even always have that power of spelling the names right
Ok, I thought I already watched this but I guess that was one of your previous book meme videos so I'm sorry about posting this comment so late. The video was absolutely amazing, loved the meme about books being doorways into other worlds (almost made me cry it's so true). Anyway, I wanted to mention something. It has come to my attention that you have never watched Marvel. Now, I don't know how much you know about it or even if you like movies, but I've seen Marvel integrated into all of your meme videos so I've got to try to convince you to give it a chance. I only started watching it a couple of years ago but now I'm a fanatic. The first experience for me was much like my first experience with ATLA: kid's shows? great character development and amazing story telling? no way. This time it was: superheroes? great character development and amazing storytelling? no way. In both cases I was proven utterly and completely wrong and brought to tears multiple times during the course of the stories. So if you've never tried it please do, just don't judge it by the first few movies. Anyway it will all be worth it just to see Loki (aka my favorite character of all time besides maybe Zuko or Elend) just reading quietly in his corner while complete chaos plays out all around him. PS: Sorry if I got a bit too intense, not trying to force you into anything.
OMG! I never thought of it as “reading like a football fan” but yes! At the end of Way of Kings I was TOTALLY SCREAMING at the book and my kids were like “are you okay mama?”
Books, Music and, though it breaks my heart, cats. Also on the talking about books meme, my friend just got done with GoT season 4 and I somehow turned it into a one hour conversation starting with: "Well in the books, 300 years ago...." One hour later I realized I had probably bored him to death.....It was worth it though
And here I always thought the cover design process was just: "So what's it about" "Well it's a fantasy book ab-" "So almost naked woman riding a dragon" "Yes please"
Congratulations on the progress (hopefully) on the adoption. I got a few adopted siblings and it's a joy (except in all the ways siblings aren't). Also, I'm not dyslexic at all but I do that with names too. Books, cinema, music (bc I can screengrab art from cinema). Reading Waiting for Godot in English Lit and being told to find the meaning, when Sam Beckett literally said that there is no deeper meaning...
I was baffled, because I was like "wait, is the rest not?"
Since then 451 has been my favorite xkcd.
Just wanted to say your Dear Authors series just popped up as a recommended watch in a writing group I am in on Facebook.
It has over 100k people in it and people seem to love it! Hope to see more!
That's AWESOME! ^-^ 👏👏
That is so cool!
My husband and I got married on Bilbo Baggins' birthday because we both love LoTR. It was a great choice. For our 10 year anniversary, we might go full 111th birthday style.
❤
Everyone else tear up when she read the every book's a hidden doorway meme? Just me? 😭 For me, Books+Coffee+Music, but I could probably give up coffee for a very very good Dog. ☺
Your reaction to the "all books are doorways" was absolutely beautiful ❤️
Never stop being huge in your gestures and expressions. It’s delightful.
True I've binged dragon ball, naruto and then one piece in a year and now i only read pictures right to left.
I actually finished a book today that I got for xmas in 2013. I'm feeling proud. The sequel I got at the same time is still sitting on the shelf though.
Well if you only just finished the first one where would the other one be?
See in another 8 years, bud.
Plot twist, the series is Discworld and you'll finish reading it at age 400 at this rate, thus ensuring and extra long life
you need to read that sequel now or itll take another ten years! CONSERVE THE MOMENTUM
What was the book?
Merphy's emotions in this video were UNDULATING!
Your expressiveness is not an issue. It's why i enjoy your videos
It is difficult to be a fan with no local fandom, but I also really wish the books I am writing had a fandom, because some of the details are *so cool*
“In what order those letters are in…MAN, SHE’S ARTICULATE” I should NOT have taken a drink of water because I almost SPEWED IT EVERYWHERE
7:23 my version would be folk of the air themed. Like imagine the gowns and flower crowns, bare feet on the grass and never ending dancing (which if you've read the books know isn't that nice of a thing, but hopefully your new spouse would save you)
Edit: also the groom just has to be Cardan. There is no other way.
Jude would probably burn down the entire area of wedding but you'll die with Cardan atleast
@@gulcinkabay1887 😂true that
Nah-uh please don't feel u ain't really "delivering any information" if vids like this are solely for entertainment.
Doctor Who won.
she loved books more than anything, and he gave her them all
For the 3 Keeps meme: Books, Music, Art.
"That's the problem, I'm too expressive" Ignore the haters, you're adorable! Embrace the nerd within.
8:10 I mean, in all fairness does the Cursed Child really count as a book? I think it would more accurately be described as kindling or a waste of paper.
Cursed Child is the hardest I've ever been clickbaited in my life
The reason I keep coming back to your videos is the emotional energy & enthusiasm you put into your reviews. Please never ever change that aspect. I actually look for that in booktube channels. It’s a winning feature 😁
This really brightened my day. For real, thanks Merph.
You’re videos are great! You may not be providing information but you are providing something in the form of joy and laughter. Goal achieved!
10:39.. I put that one on a Facebook books and movies group once.. it was adorable and so on point
(looks at my dusty (digital) copies of stuff like Mythic Creature Trainer, Dungeon Critters, Agent 9, and more)
(10:36) I'm somehow getting 'The Strangeworlds Travel Agency' vibes from that, but only based on the blurbs since I never actually read that series as I have trouble reading regular novels.
This was genuinely fun.
Lighthearted and wholesome.
Wait, am I still on the internet?
Huh, neat.
'you guys are being read?' ** side-eyes the copy of GRRM'S Fire & Blood that I bought soon as it came out then proceeded to completely ignore in favour of other books **
You are not too expressive! I would love to have someone as passionate as you in my circle of friends to discuss about stories. You are great.
Thanks for the happy moments, really needed it ❤
5:44 that's me when I started reading manga/one piece !!!!! I was like WHY ARE THERE SO MANY *PICTURES* !!!!!!
My library will be so huge. Definitely want a channel like this
Best birthday gift! Bookish memes!
Thank you Merphy!
The face you make when mentioning Facebook on the last meme is just perfect.
Also, I would keep books, coffee and chocolate. Mostly because a day with all three of them is pretty good and I can enjoy them all at the same time
That shooting star meme was 100% accurate, same with the explanation of books meme. Actually, these were all really good, love the meme videos a lot. Please keep doing them!
I just enjoy all of your videos so much! Thank you for posting!!!!
11:45 The reference is from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , a Marvel & Disney+ series .
Books, Music, Tea
EDIT: Your love for LOLL is rather admirable. I wasn't going to start the series because Scott Lynch doesn't seem like he'll finish it, but hearing you talk about it in the way only you can makes me happy. You have convinced me to give it a shot. Thank you and stay healthy.
Thank you for giving me something to smile at this morning! These may be my favorite content that you put out.
Addendum: Turtleneck laughing Merphy is the most wholesome Merphy
Addendum 2: Books, Coffee, Music. Not necessarily in that order.
I could see it took half a sec before the “all of them” hit. And your reaction drew alligator tears from my eyes as (2 seconds after you got it) the meaning hit me. I had to stop the video, finish crying and wrote this comment! Thank you for that gift.
Great video! I always love bookish meme reviews, probably my favorite kind of videos.
And books, coffee, music.
I felt that pronunciation vs spelling one. My brother listens to audiobooks exclusively while I mostly read hardcopies except for the occasional audiobook I borrow from his audible account to listen to while doing chores. When we discuss them he ends up having to correct my pronunciation. Jasnah comes to mind in particular
pls continue doings these merphyyyyyy, I watch your videos every time I eat lunch, I NEED MY LUNCH WITH MERPHY
I'm going to be honest that every book is a doorway part I was just imagining a book shelf where every book was a fake book that opened the secret door and laughed at how dumb but hilarious that would be then you said aw then said I didn't need to explain it and I realized how dumb I am lol
Haha, I was right there too! The lightbulb was slow to go off for me. ☺️
Actually I thought the same
. So you're not alone
i went to both. its really sweet and emotional, but also, that would be amazing to find in the wild. i would be so incredulous! i would be so confused and i would LOVE how weird that was!
My mind went to the literal door thing immediately, but a split second later, I got the other thing, and then I thought of books flying off shelves and the pages splitting apart and forming the edges of glowing portals that you could step through... so yeah... my mind...
Great video! Love these and the games with Korey, both make me laugh!!!
Will forgive you for picking cats b/c Locke seems to be a really good cat.
I haven't read a book in nearly 5 years, and I've been watching your videos for nearly 2 years. No matter what you post I'll be watching.
this was the best Merphy video ever! I enjoy your other videos, but this one was *chef's kiss*
Thank you, Merphy, the video is indeed a lot of fun :) A lot of them are way too true.
I don
t normally don't fall for characters; they're just words on a page to me (I mean, I care about what happens to them, of course, but it doesn't affect my real life).
I dont usually do the sports fan while reading bit but, I just finished Five Total Strangers and man did I keep up a what are you doing commentary.
I love your videos! the part about the classics is soooo true!!! I love classic books! Jane Austen especially! I read Pride and Prejudice in the 7th grade, fully understanding the context! I love books ❤
Even if you just answer questions or rant I'll totally watch 😁✨
I find book memes amusing but I only run across them. Due to your life, work, etc. You get all of them worth it
About seeking sympolism and interpretation, there's a well known story in Poland about a famous poet Wisława Szymborska, who failed an exam consisting of interpretatiing one of her poems.
That's something I do in real life all time (go on twenty minute rants of a book/series)
My roommate likes to point out what my different expressions mean and also especially when writing I will mumble when not realizing but I do it when reading. Often just reading aloud not knowingly
12:56 I am a more physical book reader bc audio books don't work for me. I sometimes can't even remember how to spell a characters name especially when it's a difficult one to spell. I don't even always have that power of spelling the names right
This was waaay too short! I loved it, so much fun 😂
And I am with you: books, tea and cats. Combined at best 😎
Thank you for the video, enjoyed it
18:06 Dumbledore wears glasses. So does Prof McGon, especially book Prof McGon.
PS: Sorry if I got a bit too intense, not trying to force you into anything.
don't worry merphy, we all need some chill videos every now and then. thanks for the content :)
Gotta be books, beer, dogs. Could be a country song, or the 2nd best idea to a shirt after that bbq, beer, freedom shirt from 2020
OMG! I never thought of it as “reading like a football fan” but yes! At the end of Way of Kings I was TOTALLY SCREAMING at the book and my kids were like “are you okay mama?”
Didn't expect to see a the Odd Ones Out comic show up in this video
7:25 I love how you read it as Eleventhy-first
Had a blast watch this. I always love watching your videos. I would pick Books, Dogs, and Cinemas.
Books, Music and, though it breaks my heart, cats.
Also on the talking about books meme, my friend just got done with GoT season 4 and I somehow turned it into a one hour conversation starting with: "Well in the books, 300 years ago...."
One hour later I realized I had probably bored him to death.....It was worth it though
I’m traveling and eating dinner alone so I needed a laugh. Thank you for this video
And here I always thought the cover design process was just:
"So what's it about"
"Well it's a fantasy book ab-"
"So almost naked woman riding a dragon"
"Yes please"
Congratulations on the progress (hopefully) on the adoption. I got a few adopted siblings and it's a joy (except in all the ways siblings aren't).
Also, I'm not dyslexic at all but I do that with names too.
Books, cinema, music (bc I can screengrab art from cinema). I don't use facebook, drink wine/tea, or have a pet, so this is easier than it should be.
Please do more of these, I love them!
My three are books, music and cinema. Couldn't live without those 3 😁
This was a very entertaining video and it's nice to just do something for fun every once in a while, keep up the great work Merphy
Also:
Books
Cats and
Music
