Great stuff. And fun as always.

Dont know why I got this on my feed. I read, write, speak the dialect. Actually both versions are spoken in the lowlands of IS. Maybe the lowland version would have a smattering of more Spanish words like fecha (date), antiojos or antiparra (spectacles/eyeglasses), sin verguenza (w/o shame), carramba (big earthen jars), casafuego (matchbox), etc...

Damn, I taught that the Ilokano you spoke and understood was geographically determined. I'm from Piat, Cagayan (geographically a lowland region) and I found highland Ilokano a lot more natural and closer to my and my parents' style of speaking rather than lowland. Could this be because of the Valley's disconnect from the Ilocos Region and closer ties with the Cordilleras?

    Biguenos: Ayabam ni nanang mo.
    Lowland: Wen (Wuhn), Bassit lang
    Biguenos: Wen (We~n), Bassit laeng
    Lowland: Kalay-atek diay kayo.
    Biguenos: Umuli-ak ti kayo.
    Lowland: Maliddayanac

La Union Ilocano is a combination of lowland and highland. They use words interchangeably depending on the mood of the speaker.

    • @milomilo417
      @milomilo417 2 роки тому

The words are actually synonyms, it depends on the one more frequently used by a speaker. For example, mayat (Highland here) & nasayaat (lowland here) are both used in the Ilocos, more frequently nasayaat but mayat is also used. So a Highland ilocano speaker can generally understand a lowland one.

My family hail from Sudipen and San Gabriel in La Union and I frequently travel to Paoay and Vintar Ilocos Norte when I was younger. I can say that there is a huge difference with how the Highland and Lowland Ilocano speak especially the accent. Oftentimes I mix both and my playmates and my elders get confused with what I'm saying. One time an aunt asked me to get the Malukkong (Bowl) and had a hard time figuring out which is which in the kitchen, only to find out that it is also called "Duyog". Also, the Sinilas and Ismagol are pertaining with slippers 😂

Love your content. Just for clarification, even lowland iluko, (Ilocano = speaker, Iluko = language) have varieties. Actually, popular notion that most Ilocanos pronounce the word 'apo' as 'apoow' is actually misleading. The Ilocos Sur and Norte Ilocanos have a "softer" way of pronouncing words say compared to Ilocanos from La Union and Pangasinan. And i can tell if an Ilocano is from Abra, because they too have their own accent.

I always thought that Bas-sit means "Kaunti" or "few/less" then Bat-tit is "Maliit" or "short / little". IDK it could be the other way around but there's a difference hahaha

I live in Isabela and many Ilocanos speak like as if they are in a fight most of the time D: . My mom and dad can speak Ilocano but me and my siblings doesn't know how to speak it. Meanwhile the ilocano in Baguio sounds very tamed (malumanay) , the exact opposite of how Ilocanos in Isabela would use their language. :D

    💟 Wow! in comparison from
when my parents would speak to us when we were young, they really spoke in highland ilocano. There
is a distinct difference yet the lowland is still understandable.
This is a great video that shows how people were able to extend communications between areas.
Tagalog being compared to the highland and lowland ilocano to me is totally a polar opposite.
My parents did know how to speak tagalog but remember rarely ever using it. It's hard to understand the tagalog for me, I can identify when it is being spoken around me but cannot understand what is being said normally I get lost. Most of the time folks that did speak tagalog would make fun of me for being ilocano and joke about the our dialect spoken. Thanks for sharing this vital comparison.👏👍🏼

1: amman agibagbaga nak ti agpayso uray kitam py ti fb.
