They won't open with the pulling loop folded back. Sure you can beat it with a hammer. Most anything will move if you beat on it enough with a hammer. I have four pullers like that. No hammer is touching mine.

This came from a junk yard and was rusted and totally seized. I did my best to make them usable again. They work perfect now. Thanks for watching.
