same, I was in a really bad place and one day I just... woke up lol. it's super toxic, a lot of it is just people wanting a reason to hate her and insult her. it took over my reddit feed and the second I left and avoided the posts, I could tell my mood changed. they can say it doesn't effect your mentality in life but I could feel myself being less negative about everything in days. the mods are all super weird , I was in the private discord chat for a while for mods and approved posters. they went off for like 2 hours about how Palestinians shouldn't have elected Hamas if they didn't want Israel's military response of killing everyone indiscriminately. I left a few days later. just a lot of negative people who thrive in negative environments.

Snark subreddits are such an interesting phenomenon. They usually start with a group people saying ''I can't criticise x/y/z without ppl attacking me, so I need my own place to vent'', I know this because I've been in a snark sub from its beginning. But gradually, these subs literally become what they hate where, not hating on x/y/z for the most inane reasons is frowned upon. You HAVE to hate, you can't stop hating if you're part of a snark sub, it's how the sub lives and breathes.

I came across a snark page talking about an influencer whose husband died by suicide, the basically blamed her for causing his death with her lifestyle and when someone called them out, they said "they are just trying to hold her accountable". For what exactly? she was literally mourning the death of her husband an the father of her kids but to these people it was just a snarky conversation. I don't understand how hateful comments about someone means "holding them available" and I guess, I will never know.

I’ve been a lurker on that sub on occasion for a while, and it seems like a lot of the people there are former swifties who are struggling with the complexities of a broken down parasocial relationship. A lot of the posts I’ve seen sound like heartbroken fans who feel like they don’t have a safe space to express their emotions and conflicting opinions about a currently inescapable superstar with a really powerful fan base. I’ve seen the brigading that the swifties do across multiple platforms, and it makes sense that people are in search of a safe space to express their complicated feelings without getting bullied for it. Granted, the existence of a parasocial connection to a pop star (whether positive or negative) is indicative of some form of psychological unease, so to me, it’s kind of to be expected that the “unhinged” commentary is going to emerge. When you combine the complex relationship with Swift (as her former fans) with the overall psychological affect of parasocial behavior, it makes sense that, at some point, the conversations have devolved into toxic snarking. These people are literally going through a break-up with one of the most popular and exposed celebrities in the world, both online and off. I can imagine it’s a bit of a maddening experience for them. I have some empathy for them in that sense. But, at the end of the day, this kind of complex psychological problem should be addressed with a professional who can provide concrete steps to heal this unique kind of heartbreak. And spreading mean words, especially towards someone who is providing perfectly valid critique of recent posts, isn’t doing anyone any good. I hope psychologists will do some thorough research and investigation into the rise of parasocial relationships with celebrities, especially online. To me it illustrates a new form of psychological coping strategies as a result of our current climate of distrust in institutions, late-stage capitalism and the overall collapse of the social contract on the internet. Anyone from that sub who is reading this comment: I genuinely feel empathy for you but I also want to remind you that healing happens away from the keyboard. You don’t always have to document your feelings on the internet, especially if it’s unkind in nature. Go punch a pillow, scream in the forest, and try to find some solace in the world around you, the internet probably isn’t going to help you much. And maybe someday, if we choose to vote in our own interest and demand proper funding of our social programs, our mental healthcare system will be able to handle this huge influx of complex psychological phenomena that have evolved as a response to everything that happens online. Until then, we’re kind of on our own. So just try to take care of yourself and show yourself and others kindness, online and off.

It was huge news (like actual news, not pop culture gossip) in Europe. two teenagers had serious plans of a terrorist attack at the taylor swift concert in Vienna, so she had to cancel them. people only found out shortly before the concert was supposed to happen and were devastated. this sub criticized her for not apologizing/putting out a statement fast enough (she waited until the end of the European leg of her tour).

I have to say I'm part of that subreddit. I find it a good place to chuckle at a few snarky posts against Taylor because the Internet is mostly filled with her unhinged fans and it feels good to find a place where people see things how I see. Although some of it feels like fan behaviour like "Oh my God did you see what she was wearing? Ewww" is the same as "Oh my God did you see what she was wearing? Wow!". Like I did not need to know each and every move of Taylor cause I'm not her fan. That's when I stopped checking the subreddit so much. But I have to say it's a solid place to raise valid criticism against Taylor which unfortunately could not be done in most places in the internet.
It seems most of the people in that sub are former swifties; that’s why they know so much about her and her music plus personal life. It’s not that serious.

i think reddit is a cool social media because of the fact you can go to spaces dedicated to your interests, but it also means you can end up in more echo-chamber like spaces and take any outside flack personally. I was in a snark sub for lore olympus(pls trust i wasnt weird abt it) and even in a small sub like that you sometimes catch yourself getting riled up by everyone else.

I've been a fan for years and I've always thought her birthday was Sept 13th,1989. I recently found out it is actually in December. When used to lurk on reddit, I said it is silly to say a celebrity is being shoved down your throat when you are actively participating in a pop culture subreddit and I was downvoted. I only use IG and UA-cam and guess what, I only see things about Taylor when I actively watch her channels or check Taylor Nation. I can literally click not interested on IG and I will stop getting recommendations about Taylor Swift. My YT front page and my IG explore page is literally food and natural hair styles because those are what I watch all the time. The algorithm gives you what you feed it, this is common sense.

I’m not a fan of TS but I am against people berating and mocking someone for potentially having an addiction. It’s not a good thing to speculate on, and if she did in fact have these addictions that’s not a character flaw (and I’m sure she has other flaws) but a serious and potentially fatal disease. It might seem insignificant but it’s these types of conversations that intensify the stigma that stops so many people (not just TS) from getting help. I have been a fan of Taylor Swift’s music since her first album was released. (I’m 29.) I go through periods where I am completely exhausted by the overexposure, because I am not a ~stan~ and don’t care about her as a person, so I will deliberately avoid anything about her. I’ve gone entire years without paying any attention to what she’s doing, simply because I didn’t want to. The fact that the people who run this sub seem completely incapable of understanding that you /can/ avoid Taylor Swift if you want to is just… beyond me. Like, they are spending multiple hours a day raging about Taylor while following everything she does, and they legitimately believe that the reason that they’re doing this is because they can’t escape her. It’s really not that hard when you’re not obsessive!!! But they are obsessive!! It’s so weird!!

Fully transparent here- I’m having mixed thoughts. I’m a former swiftie that joined this subreddit as a safe place to talk about her very problematic behavior. I have found a lot of community through that sub but I have to say I have always hated when it divulged into weird body shaming or hate over things that don’t matter. It does feel like one of the only safe places to criticize her but I also agree with D’Angelo on a lot of the things he is saying

So the local authorities issued a statement, saying that the shows had to be cancelled. Taylor herself didn't say anything for a few days, and then she acknowledged it on her Instagram post saying that she didn't want to say anything that might endanger the lives of her fans. Frankly this is a stupid thing to be mad about because most likely the show cancellation wasn't even in Taylor's hands as its a question of national security (the threats were from ISIS ffs) and also...why would a concert matter more than innocent lives?

They usually start with a group people saying ''I can't criticise x/y/z without ppl attacking me, so I need my own place to vent'', I know this because I've been in a snark sub from its beginning. But gradually, these subs literally become what they hate where, not hating on x/y/z for the most inane reasons is frowned upon. You HAVE to hate, you can't stop hating if you're part of a snark sub, it's how the sub lives and breathes.

I partly blame the mods for deleting literally anything that goes against the usual degrading comments about Taylor. They've successfully created a mini fascist government where the only opinions permitted are ones that they agree with.
I’ve been a lurker on that sub on occasion for a while, and it seems like a lot of the people there are former swifties who are struggling with the complexities of a broken down parasocial relationship.
A lot of the posts I’ve seen sound like heartbroken fans who feel like they don’t have a safe space to express their emotions and conflicting opinions about a currently inescapable superstar with a really powerful fan base. I’ve seen the brigading that the swifties do across multiple platforms, and it makes sense that people are in search of a safe space to express their complicated feelings without getting bullied for it.
Granted, the existence of a parasocial connection to a pop star (whether positive or negative) is indicative of some form of psychological unease, so to me, it’s kind of to be expected that the “unhinged” commentary is going to emerge. When you combine the complex relationship with Swift (as her former fans) with the overall psychological affect of parasocial behavior, it makes sense that, at some point, the conversations have devolved into toxic snarking.
These people are literally going through a break-up with one of the most popular and exposed celebrities in the world, both online and off. I can imagine it’s a bit of a maddening experience for them. I have some empathy for them in that sense.
But, at the end of the day, this kind of complex psychological problem should be addressed with a professional who can provide concrete steps to heal this unique kind of heartbreak. And spreading mean words, especially towards someone who is providing perfectly valid critique of recent posts, isn’t doing anyone any good.
I hope psychologists will do some thorough research and investigation into the rise of parasocial relationships with celebrities, especially online. To me it illustrates a new form of psychological coping strategies as a result of our current climate of distrust in institutions, late-stage capitalism and the overall collapse of the social contract on the internet.
Anyone from that sub who is reading this comment: I genuinely feel empathy for you but I also want to remind you that healing happens away from the keyboard. You don’t always have to document your feelings on the internet, especially if it’s unkind in nature. Go punch a pillow, scream in the forest, and try to find some solace in the world around you, the internet probably isn’t going to help you much.
And maybe someday, if we choose to vote in our own interest and demand proper funding of our social programs, our mental healthcare system will be able to handle this huge influx of complex psychological phenomena that have evolved as a response to everything that happens online. Until then, we’re kind of on our own. So just try to take care of yourself and show yourself and others kindness, online and off.

It was huge news (like actual news, not pop culture gossip) in Europe. two teenagers had serious plans of a terrorist attack at the taylor swift concert in Vienna, so she had to cancel them. people only found out shortly before the concert was supposed to happen and were devastated. this sub criticized her for not apologizing/putting out a statement fast enough (she waited until the end of the European leg of her tour).

I have to say I'm part of that subreddit. I find it a good place to chuckle at a few snarky posts against Taylor because the Internet is mostly filled with her unhinged fans and it feels good to find a place where people see things how I see. Although some of it feels like fan behaviour like "Oh my God did you see what she was wearing? Ewww" is the same as "Oh my God did you see what she was wearing? Wow!". Like I did not need to know each and every move of Taylor cause I'm not her fan. That's when I stopped checking the subreddit so much. But I have to say it's a solid place to raise valid criticism against Taylor which unfortunately could not be done in most places in the internet.

When used to lurk on reddit, I said it is silly to say a celebrity is being shoved down your throat when you are actively participating in a pop culture subreddit and I was downvoted. I only use IG and UA-cam and guess what, I only see things about Taylor when I actively watch her channels or check Taylor Nation. I can literally click not interested on IG and I will stop getting recommendations about Taylor Swift. My YT front page and my IG explore page is literally food and natural hair styles because those are what I watch all the time.

I’m not a fan of TS but I am against people berating and mocking someone for potentially having an addiction. It’s not a good thing to speculate on, and if she did in fact have these addictions that’s not a character flaw (and I’m sure she has other flaws) but a serious and potentially fatal disease. It might seem insignificant but it’s these types of conversations that intensify the stigma that stops so many people (not just TS) from getting help.

I go through periods where I am completely exhausted by the overexposure, because I am not a ~stan~ and don’t care about her as a person, so I will deliberately avoid anything about her. I’m a former swiftie that joined this subreddit as a safe place to talk about her very problematic behavior. I have found a lot of community through that sub but I have to say I have always hated when it divulged into weird body shaming or hate over things that don’t matter.

For the uninitiated, 'the Vienna incident' is most likely referring to the time that there were threats of terr*rist attacks in three different Taylor shows in Vienna, Austria. So the local authorities issued a statement, saying that the shows had to be cancelled.
Taylor herself didn't say anything for a few days, and then she acknowledged it on her Instagram post saying that she didn't want to say anything that might endanger the lives of her fans.
Frankly this is a stupid thing to be mad about because most likely the show cancellation wasn't even in Taylor's hands as its a question of national security (the threats were from ISIS ffs) and also...why would a concert matter more than innocent lives?

I used to work with a person who had a hater mindset like this. I could have swore we were cool at one point, but then one day she just decided to spread a nasty rumor about me that could have gotten me fired if I didn’t hear about it from someone I was actually friends with. I don’t know if random combustion is real, but I was about to find out in that moment. I eventually had to leave with no notice because management wasn’t helping at all :))
I hope you were able to find a better role at a better company. And that your hater stepped on a tack

The summary of the video is you're allowed to dislike something about someone but having a subreddit where you snark on that person DAILY is not just obsessive but WEIRD AF. Why is this so hard for them to understand?
the “Vienna Situation” is referring to her concerts in Vienna that were cancelled after the Italian government and American FBI confirmed substantiated terrorist threats against Swift and her concert. The hatred that those people spew on that sub is part of the reason that level of extremism against a celebrity exists. those people are morons
