I’m not surprised. Evinrude is the only name in outboards, glad we got to see it. I love these sorts of videos. Every Spring, first trip of the season, I dumps the boat off the trailer and float away from the jetty and start the engine, Yamaha people always wish it doesn’t start I’ll bet! But she always does. I’m never buying anything else. Ever.
Nice boat and motor! Not surprised, my Grandad told me always run it out of gas when finished. Love my old 76 and 86 Evinrudes and do this everytime. New impeller, spark plugs and lube then back in the water, enjoy!
That gives me some encouragement for my 1988 Evinrude 25HP, which hasn't been started in ~5years. I got some new non-ethanol gas, a new battery but so far it wouldn't pull start. It sputterd for about half a second one time. New plugs, pistons move freely. I'm going to try it with the new battery..
Omc was the best! Just got a 92 Johnson 15 that hadn’t run in 6 years I put some new plugs and now it runs great the carb gasket needs replaced though it leaks a little
That's what your get when you take care of your engines. I have an old 1973 (I think) 70 horsepower Evinrude and she starts first try, no matter what the weather. One time I had just turned the key while anchored 10 feet off the bank to test start in 37 degree weather. Cranked for a second then fired right up. Meanwhile a guy with a Mercury 150 couldn't even get his cranking.
You didn't say and you may have done it, but I would have pulled each spark plugs and shot some oil in each cylinder and rotated the fly wheel before the first start, but that's just me since it has been 17 years sleeping. Motor sounded pretty good after a 17 year nap.
NLINE7 what about fuel in tank I don't believe this positively had to clean tank and fuel line a lot of work to do to go twenty miles off shore for some mahi better have boat us and buddy boat good luck JT
Yeah, I just wanted to see if it would start without doing anything aside from changing the leaking gas tank and hoses. I didn’t even change the plugs.
We had an old 1972 model 55hp Evinrude twin on a 15 foot fibreglass runabout that was left out in the weather for God knows how long..The hull was rotted and destined for the tip..In a last effort to see if the motor was any good..i connected a good battery to it changed fuel lines cleaned out the fuel tank and put some fresh 50 to 1 mix..and it started on the 3rd attempt as well..We kept this motor..Amazing Evinrude motors both time and the elements cant even kill them..
Johnson/Evinrude (OMC) has always been my choice. I've got a 1990 4hp Johnson, 1969 6hp Johnson, and a 15hp Evinrude and they all run great. Taken proper care of, they'll probably outlive the owner.
I have a 1985 v6 omc 150hp and it still runs like new. i have friends with 2009 to 2015 yamaha for stroke and most of them have problems or dont even work thank you guys at eveinrude you guys did well with those old motors.😎👍👍
Bullshit, I had a brand new 86 Evinrude 225 was a beast till the engine threw a rod because the robots forgot to tighten down the rod bolts to specs and that's when they went down hill. Evinrude &Johnson were good back in the 70's early 80's, then they went to shit, why do you think they call those engines ocean burners, You can't beat a Yamaha or Suzuki today.
Just bought a stratos 285 pro with a 1989 Evinrude V6. I haven’t heard the engine run yet but the guy bought it from said it runs perfect (he ran it last year). I plan on starting it up here in two months, this video was very helpful, any further tips? Thanks
Why was it necessary to replace the gas tank? I have a similar situation with a 20 foot Grady. The boat hasn't been statred in 14 years. I haven't looked in the tank yet but I'm not too hopeful..
In the future NEVER use 4 cycle starting fluid in a 2 stroke. Probably didn't hurt it this one time, but it strips oil off the crank and really shortens it's life span.
check your seals on the lower unit...time is the enemy of o-rings and seals - they stop sealing when they sit around..just did the lower seals on my 35 year not used brand new evinrude...the -orings looked flat...and don't forget to pressure test the lower unit..
If everyone with an outboard ran the motor out of gas before pulling the boat boat mechanics would have a lot less work to do. Gas turns into varnish after sitting too long. Makes a mess that’s easily avoidable.
Proper fogging and weatherization procedures were obviously followed and id were another 17 years it would've fired up just the same. That huge cloud of smoke was the fogging oil burning off.
If the motor is cold I push in on the key for choke and start while the key is pushed in. Typically it will start but if not I will choke each time if it's cold.
These motors dont use a choke, it is an enrichment valve, pushing the key in activate a solenoid which in turn gives the motor a shot of fuel directly to the reed cage, this helps with cold starts, if u hold the key in too long you can "flood" the cylinders
Wow that's awesome. I just came across something very similar. We just got a 23' wellcraft with the same motor. Been sitting covered in storage for 17 years. Cant wait to start it up. It was winterized when parked. Very promising video. Did you have any problems after the initial start up?
No not at all and in fact it has been easy start every time even after setting up a couple of months during the winter time. This is been one of my favorite saltwater motors ever
Doesn't it have to be in a trash can of water keep the parts cool I say this cause we have the similar version with blue colors were told to idle in a trash can
Nice video bud! When you say you changed the fuel tank and lines, do you mean just the main fuel line or all of them? Like the lines from the carbs, fuel pump, and primer under the cowling. I know larger hp outboards like your motor is more forgiving than a smaller size (2-40 hp) motor. This is a great video, I'm happy when my 50hp starts up easily after only a few months. The only thing I would worry about is corrosion in the carbs if they sat dry that long, especially if ethanol fuel was used. Eventually blocking jets. And did the P.O. fog the motor? I'm sure even if he did, it wouldn't help much after 17 years, but would still like to know more info. Did you have any problems with the fuel pump diaphragm cracking up after using the motor, and how long did it last until it finally needed service?
Daniel Lockwood actually, water comes from hose and since it's under pressure, it will circulate in motor even w/o impeller. I would be pretty concerned about 17 y old rubber impeller...
neppisskaba if it was me I would change it also I just said that because my merc only pumps a strong stream out of the tell tale when the engine is running, the hose only has a little pressure that it pumps through the engine when it's off
One of the reasons that happened is when he ran it out of fuel it was still pumping oil into the carbs. Two with the oil tank still being connected it too pushed oil into the carbs , that’s why you had that big plum of smoke when it fired up. By no means this motor is ready for use out on the water. It needs a full service.
He put stuff in to help it start ov corse it’s gonna start up next time get one that has been siting for 25 years and don’t do anything to help start it just try start it without any new fuel lines and starter fluid ok nothin thanks look forward to that vid when it’s never gonna happen
Would that be funny Someone did not put it on a non op When it becomes time to read refer it back registration I can't only emagine more than what the boat Worth
Should be good to go then...! Yep, that's all it takes... Put a couple 16 oz cans of Seafoan in your first full tank of Fuel...! I run 1 oz Seafoam per gallon of fuel all the time as fuel system insurance...
A mercury could never do this in fact I have a mercury waiting for parts. Even when the parts get here I am going to sell it because I realized how unreliable they are. The mercury motor that I have is freshwater only and garage-kept and looks amazing. But it runs like crap.
They don't make em like they use to. Only problem I ever had with Evinrude the rubber mounts rotted and the motor ran but it wasn't fastened in proper. I gave the motor away for parts. But Ran till the mounts succumbed to old age. Now there are Evinrude Etec. Etc. If The Old Works. Why Make New.
Music man That likes old and new music that’s not true. I have had a 40 year old motor start 3rd pull. If he had started it earlier it would have started right away.
I have 90 Ocean pro that has been down for 15 years. Your video is very encouraging.
I’m not surprised. Evinrude is the only name in outboards, glad we got to see it. I love these sorts of videos. What a happy man, Billy. I am the Evinrude fan, worked on many older V4 and V6 s, they are just refuse to die!
Nice boat and motor! Not surprised, my Grandad told me always run it out of gas when finished. Love my old 76 and 86 Evinrudes and do this everytime. New impeller, spark plugs and lube then back in the water, enjoy!
That is VERY good after 17 years, goes to show how good Evinrude engines are
Nice motor. This is why I’ve been Evinrude for life! Cool video!
Just bought a motor like that 78 year encouraging this video hope I have the same success
Great man!, I have an Evinrude 140 hp TRLCNB 1982 and it's amazing!, cheers from Paraguay!
I have a Johnson 175 95 mod . And i love it . Love the sound . !!😊

merc hard starting

your reaction is the best!!:) I love the sound it makes when it first starts lol
Johnson/Evinrude (OMC) has always been my choice. I've got a 1990 4hp Johnson, 1969 6hp Johnson, and a 15hp Evinrude and they all run great. Taken proper care of, they'll probably outlive the owner.
can't get much better then an evinrude awesome motors
I have a 1985 v6 omc 150hp and it still runs like new. i have friends with 2009 to 2015 yamaha for stroke and most of them have problems or dont even work thank you guys at eveinrude you guys did well with those old motors.😎👍👍

Nothing runs like a Evinrude. Evinrude is no longer as of may 2020 sad very sad. Good video.
Thank you for sharing, I just subscribed!
That's what happens when you put you're engine away the rite way. Vroom. She'll start every time 👍.

Check out Dangar Marine's channel. He has a whole series about a similar motor that blew up, was rebuilt and restarted.

Peter Jensen I love danger
Good buy. Nice job
OMC baby!
The Best money can buy
Sounds nice and crisp
yes it does!!
they say that a well maintained boat engine can last forever*.
Very true, this boat belonged to a friend of mine that I fished with for years and he kept the engine well-maintained
ua-cam.com/video/SWj6_vAx1K8/v-deo.html
After 37 yrs my Brother just smoked his outboard/dropped a piston. PMS is the key
They can. My river boat has a 1970 33 johnson. My grandpaw gave it to my dad and my dad gave it to me.
I don't ever use ether on anything or less I have to. But sweet I'm glad it fired up..
smart move replacing fuel lines as well as tank. never tried starter fluid usually carb cleaner.
Ran it out of gas last time used.... that was the best thing that happened! Next: NEW IMPELLER! They deteriorate over a few yrs.
Just bought a stratos 285 pro with a 1989 Evinrude V6. I haven’t heard the engine run yet but the guy bought it from said it runs perfect (he ran it last year). I plan on starting it up here in two months, this video was very helpful, any further tips? Thanks
I thought I was doing something starting one that had been sitting for seven years!!! Lol.. 👍

Now that’s a good engine.

Thanks for this tip
Are you using the VRO system or premix?
Needs a water pump.......17 years its shot. Hope you know that before you take it out
check your seals on the lower unit...time is the enemy of o-rings and seals - they stop sealing when they sit around..just did the lower seals on my 35 year not used brand new evinrude...the -orings looked flat...and don't forget to pressure test the lower unit..

Hey how much choke do you give it? And if it doesn't crank over, do you re choke? Or would that flood your engine?
If the motor is cold I push in on the key for choke and start while the key is pushed in. Typically it will start but if not I will choke each time if it's cold.

@@billysexton thank you. Cant wait to work on ours.
What did you expect?

just the main fuel line. Nothing was done to the engine.
There likely was not ethanol fuel 17 yeaars ago
typical evinrude
Wow...wwaaaaaaaw.
And it's actually pumping water
Daniel Lockwood actually, water comes from hose and since it's under pressure, it will circulate in motor even w/o impeller. I would be pretty concerned about 17 y old rubber impeller...

Does Jesse James have a long lost twin

Actually after The new fuel tank and fuel lines nothing else was done and it has ran perfect and still is running perfect every weekend
yeah buddy!

ITS ALIVEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I got 115 horse Johnson and it’s only hitting on two cylinders
At 115 horse Johnson is hitting on two cylinders
He put stuff in to help it start ov corse it’s gonna start up next time get one that has been siting for 25 years and don’t do anything to help start it just try start it without any new fuel lines and starter fluid ok nothin thanks look forward to that vid when it’s never gonna happen
What do you mean ofcourse lmao like the carbs couldnt be gummed shut, if your not impressed you have no mechanical ability lol
Starting fluid is all bad for 2 strokes. Try fogging oil instead.
Would that be funny Someone did not put it on a non op When it becomes time to read refer it back registration I can't only emagine more than what the boat Worth

To satisfy California's regs that the whole US bowed down too. Carbed 2 strokes are no longer legal to make
James Paul I love my Gen 1 Etec 250 HO. Has never once failed to start immediately in 7 years.
Mate u did service this before the vid it would not start that easy after that long clickbait
Music man That likes old and new music that’s not true. I have had a 40 year old motor start 3rd pull. If he had started it earlier it would have started right away.
Filmed with a potato.
You think he really used film?
why so dramatic
I didn't think it would start. No carb. job or anything ...
