    Your interview on Karen’s Quilt Circle was wonderful. I’ve been looking for a hand piece to have for times when I want to enjoy quiet sewing or just visiting with friends. I can’t just sit idle. I was hesitant (very unlike me when it comes to sewing) to tackle a bed sized project right away. Your wise Dad led me with his instance that I start with a cushion. Thank you for your calm, careful instruction. You have a great teaching style. Down a new rabbit hole I go!

    I made the mistake of sharing a sea turtle Hawaiian quilt with my daughter and now she's begging me to make it for her , she's 35 and special needs . I can never refuse her anything because she doesn't see the evil in the world and she has the biggest heart ❤🥰 so what she wants, we try to give her because we know it doesn't come from a greedy want , so I'm going to try to study all your techniques just for my daughter 😁🤟 I know the problems that left handed people have, I'm left handed 😁

    Many years ago, in 5th grade, we did this by hand. That was the 1980s on Ohau, Barbers Point. I made a pillow. I remember carrying around a little shoe box of supplies. Turning the edge and stitching it down was a challenge. The teacher said it would teach us patience. I still have it it looks a bit rough.

    I am so glad that I caught your interview with Karen Brown yesterday! I love to hand appliqué and I especially love Hawaiian Quilts! I would love to one day complete a king size quilt, but I'm going to start with the 22" x 22" LOL even though I can already needle turn appliqué. As a side note, my husband and I were dating in the early 80's on the same ship called the USS ACADIA AD-42. While on a WES-PAC in '85, our first stop was in Hawaii. He proposed to me on Waikiki Beach and we are still married 36 years later!

    Thank you so much for this! The other videos I saw used iron on glue, and I can't stand that stuff! Already messed up one quilt with it. My grandmother grew up in Hawaii and when she passed away she picked out a beautiful Hawaiian print fabric for me that I have been wanting to make a quilt with. Is it very challenging to do one large applique for a quilt size? I don't usually do very much hand sewing.

    So thrilled to have watched your interview with Karen of Karen’s Quilt Circle! I plan to attempt to make a cushion once I get my new grandnephew’s quilt finished. Question - is it okay/possible to glue baste instead of thread basting? I was thinking of using Roxanne’s Glue Baste It glue. Your thoughts would be most helpful. Mahalo Cissy.

    • @poakalanihawaiianquilts4122
      @poakalanihawaiianquilts4122  2 роки тому

      Aloha Lori, All the years I've taught Hawaiian Quilting I only have one quilter that glue baste. She's never had a problem glue basting and prefers that over thread basting. If you know the technique, then of course glue basting is another option to baste your design on to the backing fabric.

    What color thread do you use on the background if the background is white and the pattern is blue as in your you tube video? Someone told me to use the same color thread as the pattern on the echo quilting but wouldn’t it be too noticeable?

    • @poakalanihawaiianquilts4122
      @poakalanihawaiianquilts4122  Рік тому +1

      You can use the same color thread as the background color, which I do. My mother Poakalani used the same color thread as the design. If you're a beginner stick to the same color as the background. More experience quilter with even and smaller quilt stitches can use a different color thread.

    I repeated the folding 3 or 4 times to ensure I’d get it right, but when I unfolded it after cutting it out, I ended up with 4 pieces!!!😢. How did that happen? Should I sew them together at the straight edges?

    • @poakalanihawaiianquilts4122
      @poakalanihawaiianquilts4122  2 роки тому

      When you fold your fabric remember you need to bring all your folds together. You should have 3 folds on 1 angle and 1 large fold on the other angle. I would recommend using a whole new fabric.

    • @petuniapetal211
      @petuniapetal211 2 роки тому

      @@poakalanihawaiianquilts4122 I actually did sew the four pieces together and have now sewn almost half of the pattern to the backing fabric, so too late to start again. It’s probably not going to be a true Hawaiian quilt top, but it’s just for me, so I’m okay with that. I’ll know where to place the pattern piece on the folded fabric next time. Thank you for responding.

      You would do exactly the same thing. Because you fold both into 8ths, when you lay it to pin then baste, the folds will be where you the center the applique and each of the folds as they fan out. Just as she demonstrates.
