Pitt Rivers Museum Commission
In 2020 we were approached to commission several quilts for the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, England. Due to Covid the quilts took two years to finish and they were finally completed in 2022. This project helped me to reconnect with our class that is currently on hiatus and also to re-focus my attention to what really mattered most friendship and family. Thank you to all the quilters who were part of this project and those who wanted to be part of this project, when I say friendship and family I mean all of you. The quilts are beautiful.
Poakalani & Co has been teaching Hawaiian quilting since 1972 founded by Poakalani and John Serrao and now under the direction of their daughters Rae Correia and Cissy Serrao
Due to the pandemic the classes are on hiatus until a new venue can be found for the classes.

Make a Hill, place, come with needle down, touch underneath, tiny under stitch, push up and rest -use Hoop and use thimble- takes time- one stitch at a time in beginning and eventually curve- slow in beginning with Poalakana

Start with needle makes a hill, thru 3 layers, tiny with stitch and come up and start again- use thimble

Thinner batting she said - not thick-

Use the hoop for quilting- a thin batting and use assorted needles with you feel comfortable to quilt- when started with the center design- around the edge of circle-

I love your tutorials, and I’m ready to quilt my first Hawaiian quilt wall hanging, I’m wondering if a hoop is necessary? Or can it be stitched without one? The one I’m working on is 45 x 45.

Do you (or any other viewers) have any recommendations for appliquing light fabrics on dark backgrounds so that the background fabric doesn't show through?

Thank you so much for this wonderful video! I've seen pieces like this and I was always so impressed but at the same time couldn't imagine how hard it must be to make one. Now I know that sure, it needs time, practice and effort, but it's not impossible to learn and the result is so beautiful! I want to try this technique soon, now that I know more about it. Thank you for your help, explanations and encouragement ❤️

I am trying to find a video that shows how to attach the back part of the pillow & the binding. I am making a Hawaiian quilted pillow to surprise a makua hānai who takes in many hanai on her own dime. She mentioned that she loves the pillows I made in the past, but it's been a while & I don't remember how I attached the back & binding. I kind of do, but since this is for someone else, I want to make sure it's perfect. Can you please direct me to a video that shows how to attach the back & the binding? Mahalo nui loa!!

Excellent demonstration. Needle turn appliqué is the best way to make beautiful appliqué. I tried all the other “ modern techniques” using heat bonding, freezer wrap etc etc. needle turn wins, hands down. Thank you for keeping this skill alive.

❤ Thank you for your video I am going to try this technique. I have done two Hawaiian blocks so far but with a domestic sewing machine and the appliqué stitch that is very visible. I also love that you take your time in teaching us this beautiful art.

Hello, I have suddenly been pulled/called to work on hawaiian quilts. Your three videos found me very well. I have started my first quilt (a plumeria) and am enjoying the process so much (I finally made it to the quilting phase). I love how you said to have Aloha in your heart, I had to do some research and learn what exactly does aloha mean? And I came to find it's a whole lifestyle. It also lead me to Ho-aponopono which has been incredibly good for my state of mind. Thank you for sharing these gifts, they are far reaching.

This is the first of your videos that I've found. Wonderful instructions from a very charming teacher!!! 💕 I do have one question -- what size thread do you use? I can barely see it in the finished stitches, unlike my all-purpose thread, which really looks thick and distracting! (My preferred needle is a size 9 embroidery needle for hand piecing, and that's what I've used in trying to do a small amount of appliqué in the past, but my thread looks atrocious!) Thank you so much for your generosity of spirit in sharing your techniques -- I've really got to try this now! 💐🦋🍍

oooh! This! This is what I was looking for. Thank you for your tutorials. The typical quilting patterns are so geometric and though very nice, they lack the organic look and feel wanted. This looks and feels like a real flower. I'm definitely going to try this out.

Beautiful work! Thank you. I went to Hawaii years ago. I met a woman who had been commissioned by the governor to make a quilt that hung in the governors mansion. I got a kit from her. I just absolutely cherish it. I don’t remember the woman’s name though. thank you again for your teaching ability. ❤
