I built a PC, but it moves

  • In this video I build a custom PC but design a new case for it and make it kinetic. This is my gaming computer, editing computer, and everything in between. I have spent the last couple months getting the mechanical engineering portions figured out for this custom PC build since I have no idea what I am doing but wanted to make a really complicated design. I have had the idea for a kinetic computer case for a while and after seeing the one from Cyberpower I was excited to try and design and build my own. This is an Arduino project that is actually pretty simple but the mechanical engineering side is difficult having to work within such a constrained space. As far as custom PC case builds go I hope this was one like you have never seen before.

    EDIT: I am changing this comment from a FAQ to a link to the behind the scenes video. Airflow? Sound? Digital files? If you have a question that wasn't answered in this video, you should hopefully find it here: ua-cam.com/video/sJJ7cc2AYIM/v-deo.html

      If you are interested in improving airflow, see if you can mount two 140 mm fans on the top of the case. Not sure if you have enough clearance within the case but it would improve the amount of air intake you have tremendously. I wouldn't move the front panel fans to the top though as it'd mess with the lighting effect on the front panel.

    • @Ideal_Idea
      @Ideal_Idea  10 місяців тому +41

      @@Prim1itve This is a good solution and you're right there is plenty of space up there currently. I will definitely add those if the airflow ever becomes a problem.

      For the sound, you can get silent stepper motor drivers which may help. Also, that looks like a *really* beefy motor for what you need. You might be able to get away with using a smaller motor, which may or may not help.

      Instead of sanding the acrylic, I'd recommend some frosted etched vinyl. you can probably get some scraps from a sign/vinyl shop for a piece that small. They may even lay it for you. It'd take like 2 minutes.

    Absolutely INSANE. Clicked on these thinking it was a Howl's Moving Castle PC situation haha. But instead what I found is this genuinely resourceful, funny, STRONG critical thinker that knows how to create a vision and see it through to the end.
    I loved being carried through your R&D process of what you were trying to accomplish and what you immediately thought of to solve it even if it didn't work out. Anyone could just "delete the footage and pretend like it didn't happen" like you said in the video, haha. However, overcoming trials and tribulations is what makes for good story-telling. People that try to sell themselves as knowing the answers to absolutely everything are simply not as entertaining to watch.
    Incredibly impressive work and although you "aren't a mechanical engineer", this is the power of gathering knowledge and just executing to accomplish something. As a software engineer, I can tell you right now that your ability to design and build makes you an engineer. Keep it up man!

    I'm not even 2 minutes in and the cuts are already SO good. Having us wonder what the circle was supposed to show, for the arduino to show up in the middle, and dropping the markers, to color the sketch, instead of just showing the finished sketch. So satisfying

    hey dude. its a massive treat when you post a video, every single one has been so interesting and impressive. the kinetic panels look insanely good, well done! it really is a special effect even greater than the sum of its parts! (and thats alota parts!)
    i don't want to break your heart, but given they work around a single motor just continuously turning at a constant RPM, you could literally just have plugged a 5V motor into a USB port. no controller, no programming, no nuthin. just finding one with the right RPM or a gearbox/appropriate gearing in your mechanism to make it go the speed you want.
    but hey, i'm sure you learned alot and saw it through for a phenomenal result, and theoretically you can couple the motor speed and direction to various things now, like game FPS or something.

    • @Ideal_Idea
      @Ideal_Idea  10 місяців тому

      Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the video. I am sure there was a better way to do the motor lol. That is good to know if I ever want to expand on this idea or mess with other electronic stuff. The main reason I went this route was to provide a variable speed if I needed to change it between panels but tbh your solution would have probably saved me a month of work if I had known that off the start and planned for it.

      @@Ideal_Idea U could also have used a pwm fan and modify it to have gears ect could have been cheaper than gettin a motor too :P plug it to your mother board and this way u would be able to control it using ur motherboard fan software , Armory crate or so on

    A good tip to prevent splitting when cutting plywood is to add painters tape to the backside. You also might want to try to adjust your blade depth if possible. Another thing that will help is to make sure to use a new and sharp blade for cuts where you need a nice finish.

    I think timing belts would be your best friend if you tried this again. Instead of having little gears that mesh all you big gears together so they move together. you could wrap a single loop of timing belt around an entire row of gears that moves them all simultaneously. It will probably save you a lot of headache (and might run a bit quieter as well).
