    I am the original owner of a 1976 914 with 26,000 miles on it. I see this car and it saddens me that someone, or all of the previous owners, could let a car end up in that condition. Kudos to you for saving in from the crusher. I think UA-cam is responsible for saving many vehicles in the name or "content".

    I bought a non-running ‘75 2.0L in ‘93 as a 15. Dad & I had it running after fuel line, spark plugs & injector work. it was painted in winter ‘93 & I daily drove it in ‘94. it’s been inside & covered this whole time, so the paint on it has been there twice as long as the original paint was ever. they’re super fun, but started me on the 911 journey & I always have one ready to go. a 914 is a gateway drug

    I think it’s cool that CT can have a bunch of different projects going on. If I were in his shoes, I might get burnt out from time to time and want to just get away from it for a bit. Working on something else could be refreshing…..and besides …he can. Remember, it’s basically an “entertainment” thing…for our free enjoyment….somewhat less of a “car flipping” thing. (In my opinion).

    There’s a great video by 914 rubber on how to remove the top dash that has to come off before the rest. 5 or 8 of those plastic knob nuts, like the tail light lens holders. You also need to remove the two screws holding the cover to the steering column, to in plug the wire cluster. The gauges will come out the holes, but you need to reach behind and undo the Speedo cable, then you can map the wires, and GENTLY, twist the light holders (lefty loosy) to undo them. Those switches require a tool called an escutcheon tool.

      Those nuts are plastic but are not like the taillight nuts. I think they are 13 or 10 mm

    • @richardjones38
      @richardjones38 5 місяців тому

      They're 13mm M8 plastic nuts, and they're ridiculously difficult to get at! I forget how many of them there are (9, maybe), but the recommendation of finding the video showing where they are is a good one. I think I chopped a crappy old spanner in half to make a short one to get onto some of them. Everything about getting the dash and fresh air blower system out of a 914 is very difficult. If the design brief was 'design every aspect of the dash so it's as awkward as possible', I'd say they succeeded!
      I admire the optimisim of getting all that done on 90 days. I'm about 6 years into my '75 restoration now, although I don't got to spent that much time on it.

    I would take that whole piece at the bottom of the windshield off. The vent box is most likely rusted out and will allow water to get inside the vehicle if it's like most other cars. It would probably take just as long to try to fix the rusted areas as it would to replace the whole piece.

    The upper number on the Karmann tag in the doorjamb is the body number assigned by Karmann. It is not the same as the factory's VIN number found on the metal plate along the left hand lower side of the windshield . The VIN number is also stamped on the inside of the RF fender and on the trunk floor near the ride side rear area. This is the VIN number used on the car's title. The lower number on the Karmann doorjamb tag is just the factory's paint code for the car. If you want to know what options the car had from the factory, you need to use the VIN number and buy the Kardex info sheet from the Porsche factory.

    Hey CT, just a suggestion from one who made this mistake. Do not weld anything to the frame of this car without the doors in place and closed! I did and they would not fit afterwards. I had to cut my new longs and move them to make doors fit correctly! Otherwise, most everything you need should be available! Two weeks!? Yeah! Sure!

  • @mikedx2706

    That rubber trim with the metal backing is actually an inner trim piece piece that goes on top of the dash board and up against the bottom area of the windshield once the windshield is glued in the car. It hides the lower seam along the bottom of the windshield. 914Rubber sells new ones.

    The trick on removing the old Phillips head screws is to first turn them to the right as if you are trying to tightened them up a little, and then turning left to loosen them. I have found that this trick works most of the time.

      Hey buddy, I recently watched a video from Andrew Huberman who stated that 90 days is a good starting point to achieve any goal...not sure if his study included restoring a car....haha =) Will see what happens. You have to start somewhere and 90 days seems achievable based on the experience I had with the 65 beetle over the last 12 months. I feel like the 914 needs less work overall...but time will tell. Anything could happen and life does get in the way. The beetle is basically done in my eyes...there are a few more details that have to be worked out and we will get to those soon. It's like a cake that just needs some candy sprinkles! =) I hope your new does is going well. Get on your project when you can.

    The number on the door sill is the chassis number. As you can see it says Karmann, the same guys who did the Karmann Ghia. Back in those days the chassis/engine was produced by VW or Porsche, and the body was a Karmann design/production. So you have a serial number and a chassis number by each production house. Also this account for a difference in quality of the production. Karmann had beautiful designs, but they sure used flimsy materials. Hey CT, for another small targa toy you should find yourself a Fiat X1/9.. 🙂 I LOVE targas...

    I suppose this black stuff holding the windscreen against the body is still in use today. If I'm not mistaken, it's some extra - strong asphalt - based glue that remains flexible. If you don't get this black stuff in a car parts store, some car glass service should have it ready. 18:45: The design of the heater channel pretty much shows how Porsches and Volkswagens were built with similar layouts and parts throughout the late 1960s - 80s. The so - called "KdF - Wagen" (which was to be the Beetle / Käfer after the War) was a design by Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche, so here we are!
    20:00: Right, L31M is the colour code for the original paint. Achtung! "Kunstharzlack" means that this is a resin (epoxy) - based lacqer, unlike the water - based paint used today! Maybe epoxy - based primers are recommended, but again I'm not sure. I think some car - painting specialist knows more! In any case, using a wrong kind of primer could result in the final layer getting ripples or flaking off.
    150008 could be a serial number used for special edition cars or bodies fabricated by Karmann, I believe. It could be that the chassis and the body have different serial No.s!
    Of course, "Made in Western Germany", when we still had this Commie - occupied part of Germany further East!
    All the best!

    Hello it was a shame you damaged all that trim from around the window, looks expensive to replace!
    Next time you come up against this type of job, it might be an idea to use a heat gun to soften the adhesive as you remove it.

    Unfortunately, it looks like they installed that windshield with urethane, you need 5/16 butyl rubber to install it like it was from the factory, and new trim clips of course. I'm surprised that they didn't use a gasket like on the VW.

    I think it’s great that you have the balls to just forge ahead with stuff, but it’s hard to watch when I see you use brute force and cost your project more money, those butterfly horn buttons are not being remanufactured and what you had was fixable. Don’t you remember lefty loosy righty tighty? Take a second, check the web, and save some money and headaches.

    • @CTmoog
      @CTmoog  7 місяців тому +2

      I agree man...I really thought I had it and the next thing I know it was stuck....believe me if I could have saved the trim and the horn button I would have...I will have to find a parts car for some stuff like that.
