  • In this video, we are going to go over all the global settings for the Line 6 Helix. This is a great way to get the most out of your gear. I know, it's not the most exciting thing in the world, but I can promise you that at some point during this video you will have at least 1 "ah ha! I didn't know that" moment, and will change the settings on your Helix and get better use out of it. I know that I did, and while researching this video, I changed 3 different settings on my Helix. Enjoy.

    Thank you. This is a good no-nonsense tutorial. Just the right amount of silliness to break up the monotony of the subject matter without making the video too long.
    The fact that you got through all of it in 34 minutes while still properly explaining all of the details is impressive. A lot of the big Helix youtubers would’ve taken twice as long or had split it up into several long vids.

    Long time Helix user and just discovered your channel. Thanks for this posting, def worth any Helix user's time. I realized going through the settings that there's a newer setting now, with the 3.5 update, in "Preferences" now, which is called "Link Dual Cabs". The only thing I could find about it so far is that if you have it set to "on", you can still use 2 mics in different positions, but it's on just one cab of choice. If I'm wrong one that, please correct me.

    Hi Scott, I'm from the Netherlands. I 'm running a home studio, just for myself. I Liked your video about the Helix "beginners video" . And now The global settings video. Again, great explanation about the functionallities and why, and how to set things up. But, I'm not a guitarist, I have five guitars, electric acoustic, semi hollow, country, bass and two real guitar amps, but I'm a synth / piano player. My goal was / is, to have a home studio where everything is possible. I'm running Studio One from Presonus in combination with a StudioLive 64S and a NSB 32.16 AVB unit (Ethernet). And I have an old Boss GT-6, which still sounds nice. But about a year ago, I bought the Helix, cause I viewed a lot of reviews etc. I know a lot of programming synths, workstations, MIDI, so the Helix wasn't (in my opinion) that bad. But it was, I play a little bit (sorry for my English) guitar, but the Helix has so many options and routings that, for me it was difficult to understand. But your videos's made it for me, quite clear!
    Regards,
    Mark Hofland

    I really need to get my brain around these options. I run normally with Preset/Snap because it's rare I need more than 4 snaps per song. And because of the power of snapshots I rarely find that I care about stomp mode. One exception is with the looper but I don't use that much.
    A key point about the snapshot discard option: if you are in RECALL mode and make changes to your snapshot, you can think of this as a temporary save of your changes. It doesn't actually overwrite the memory of the Helix for that snapshot unless you actually save the preset. If you decide that you didn't want to keep those changes, you simply need to switch away from that preset (or power off the Helix) and they will be lost. So I find RECALL mode is best because you don't immediately lose your edits if you forget and switch snapshots. However, you DO lose them if you go to another preset.
    So it's somewhat analogous to using certain apps on your computer. A lot of things are done in memory only and you have to remember to save your edits, or else they are lost when the app is closed or the PC is turned off. For example, years ago when you were in a document editor, you had to remember to manually save your edits or they'd be lost. Now most have auto-save enabled by default.

    Nice again. I just watched 2 in a row!
    Recently my audio interface got damaged, so in the meanwhile I am using Helix as my audio interface (USB) to record, to hook up my studio monitors on when mixing. However, I also have a powercab hooked on via AES. as the Helix floor has so many options, I am trying to figure out when I record 2 things (I don’t know if it’s even possible):
    1. Have the guitar sounding only on my powercab (while I record via USB interface).
    2. Not letting anything from my DAW sounding on my powercab (I already have the studio monitors for that)
    Oh also, I notice like here and there pops/cracks-ish when recording with the Helix as a USB interface. I don’t see any red clipping in Ableton, nor my laptop is overworking. So it’s my first time using the helix as my main audio interface.
    If you know something about that, I would highly appreciate it.
    I will go now watch some of your other videos. I would really like to control Ableton scenes with the Helix 😃

      I honestly just only use the helix direct, so I’m not sure about those. But using it to control ableton I did a video about using the helix as a midi controller here: ua-cam.com/video/EJ_bCKH8rmk/v-deo.html

I play for a big church, my amp miked. The Helix I need to go through all genres of gospel. Traditional, Rock/pop, Contemporary, etc. Playing through my 7 string Charvel and Gretsch Black Panther, until a pick up a Variax soon ....

    You want the Auto Impedance set to First Enabled. The legacy (pre firmware 3.00) behaviour is the default so that the update doesn't change the sound of your existing presets.
    Mostly it doesn't matter, because the input impedance of most pedals is pretty similar, but try putting an Industrial Fuzz first in the chain and turning it off. How does that sound? Then switch from First Block to First Enabled.

    Because I’ve owned a Helix since 2016, I’m too embarrassed to say how much I learned from this video. There’s still so much that this thing can do that I never knew about or used. It’s almost too powerful, because all the options can cause “decision paralysis” as you keep diving deeper and trying to perfect your setup.

    Thank you, - I see you now have both the Helix Floor and the Stomp. I am curious to tap a bit from your experience with them..... In which situations (gigs) would you bring the Helix Floor and to which situations would you instead bring the Stomp XL (the new one)?

    • @ScottUhlMusic
      @ScottUhlMusic  2 роки тому +1

      I only have the stomp, not the xl. Almost all of my gigs I bring my HX stomp and go with just my main 4 tones that I need. If I play with a band that needs a lot more fx I’ll bring the full helix. But most of the time I just need, clean, overdrive, distortion, and boost and I’m good to go. With my original music I do have a lot more Fx, But I midi map everything so every song has its own preset since I never have to touch it and the computer sends midi commands to the stomp to change presets and sounds. The stomp really is my main workhorse.

    Scott, first off, thank you again for making these videos, but I have a question. Full disclosure I am brand new to the Helix and power cab/so still have a learning curve going on but I think it is going ok. My question is I have a power cab plus and am running a digital cable to be able to make presets and have the ability switch between different speaker choices. My issue is with the cabinet facing me and making sure have the green to yellow light going I have to say it is not impressing me at all. Again I am new to this and have been a tube amp guy my whole life and for me to buy the helix is going to be for live play with an amp environment behind me with powercab. Are there tricks to getting the cab to sound better? I know thats a loaded question. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    • @ScottUhlMusic
      @ScottUhlMusic  3 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching. “Make it sound better” can be many different things. I honestly never use it with a cab and only go direct personally, so I’m not sure I’m the right guy to help with that either. I know that other channels use the helix with a cab, so that might be more helpful tbh 👍

    Does Helix have something like Boss GX - you can set few different guitar profiles on input with different volume levels?

  • @frusciantegeartone

    Here’s a 2 part question for ya.
    I hope you can help.
    If I use stomp mode I realize 8 to 10 stomps are available, but this confuses me if I tried this in main screen of helix.
    Could I run two amps and cabs, an always on compressor, always on eq, and always on low gain. Will the “always on” signal take up stomp space? Like say I have 10 effects, Will the always on pedals take up 3 of the stomp spaces or are they separate?
    In a nutshell, I’m wanting to recreate a John frusciante board on a helix (which I don’t have yet) and will need many effects to recreate his board. Wondering if stomp mode would be best for all his different effects or if preset or snapshot would be best.

    • @ScottUhlMusic
      @ScottUhlMusic  Рік тому +1

      Yup, you can leave some stuff always on with snapshots and change the other pedals and parameters with snapshots. I did a snapshot video here: ua-cam.com/video/gY67lxBrLHg/v-deo.html

    Hey man ! I was wondering if it's possible to drop only one string (the lowest, to get a drop A on a 7 string guitar for example), and not ALL the strings ? All of the effects I've found drop the general tuning of the guitar, but not only one string. Still, I remember I watched one video that showed we could change each string's tuning individually, but I just can't find it anymore :O Thanks a lot for your help and great videos !!!

    I recently had all of my equipment from the past 3 decades destroyed. With that, I've purchased all new equipment and found my most common ah ha moment to be "OMG!"
    Bare in mind, my previous equipment was extremely basic/simple and dummy proof, most of it being 20-30 years old, and now all this new gear has so much potential and capabilities beyond anything I've used in the past. Oy Vey! What is one to do when the beginners guide appears to be advanced material, lol?
