I Commute 7 Hours To Work. This Is Why.

  • I'm a commuting flight attendant for a major US airline, and a journalist telling stories across America.
    I'm based in New York, but have chosen to live in Los Angeles to continue to explore creative endeavors and opportunities out west. I grew up in Brooklyn, so it's really exciting to be finally living in my west coast era. My airline's biggest base is on the east coast, so to have the best of both worlds (getting to layover in places like Guatemala!!) I have decided to commute rather than transferring to my airline's LAX base. This video shows why this journey is so important to me.

      @@lalotatoJetBlue’s base is rather small at LAX, but their operation at JFK is massive. They are headquartered there, and have the second largest passenger share at JFK (Delta narrowly beats them by less than one percentage point). So they are likely to fly from JFK, but not LAX.

    Good luck on your career. I started back in the "dark" ages Feb 1984 flying for PanAm, was based in Berlin, London, Nyc,IAD/DCA, and now ATL. I am headed towards my golden years. In the "retirement" of flying. Combined almost 40 years of service and at PanAm/Delta I am NOT even SENIOR. But it's been one of a ride I wouldn't have missed. I hope all your dreams come thru, you have a great personality, go for it, explore, share and pay it forward in the end it's all that matters when we look back. HAPPINESS.

      Hi Dara, Capt Umphenour rings a bell, was he a B727 capt ? While in Berlin and London we had a lot of NYC based pilots flying inter Europe.. We all were a melting pot when we came to DL, all of us went to NYC.. Many transferred out after 3 months and those who didn't were stuck in NYC until 1994..

    Thank you for all the positivity. ❤ it looks like you were in a nicer district of Guatemala city, but it is hit or miss and some districts/neighborhoods can be dangerous and high in crime. I’m glad you traveled with caution.
    So, Guatemala is known for a few major attractions. Antiqua is a historical heritage site that is roughly about an hour and a half away from Guatemala city and the airport, the next time you have a 24 hour+ layover I would highly recommend doing a day trip out there. It’s very European and historical as it was established by the Spanish. The other two areas that I would highly recommend is unlikely that you will have time to do during a layover. Tikal/Flores is about an hour flight, and that is where you would go to visit the pyramids. It’s extraordinary and absolutely amazing. Lastly, a lot of people go to Guatemala to experience Lake Atitlan and the surrounding villages on the lake. It’s an experience like no other. It’s absolutely stunning. Plan for a longer trip and use your benefits. 👌

    You were in my feed, and I’m not gonna lie that headline or whatever they call them on here… thumbnail? I had to watch a few minutes and now it’s almost over. Well actually not quite but getting there. You just a few seconds ago, said your age.
    You’re so mature and doing a great job getting life started! Maybe you’re not so unique in that but you’re definitely not playing around. You will go far pun intended, but seriously. 😂❤
    My 2nd youngest is going to be 24 this coming summer. (I also have going on 27, 25, and 21 year olds. Girl, boy, girl, boy.) she just started getting more serious about work and everything but except for vacation with friends a few times she hasn’t exactly widen her horizons as far as you yet. Then again, not everybody wants them quite that far on a weekly basis. It seems awesome. I feel spread pretty thin on here already with some good channels, but I will definitely keep an eye on you.
    As interesting as I find some of the avionic channels, I’m actually more interested in your observations of different parts of the world. It doesn’t have to be a war zone. Just seeing the different stores or different ways to do things it’s interesting.
    That whole thing about kids in America in general is sadly true, but I think you’re still will find we have more in common individually anyway, if not as a country - reputation wise (which tends to favor, generalities, and even stereotypes…. Some more truthful than others… but some highly exaggerated. I hope. 😂) then we have differences.

    I completely agree that English speakers are somewhat catered too with their language. It's amazing how often you can get by with just English in other countries as long as you remain in the largest cities. If you leave those cities, it can be a shock to realize not everyone speaks English. I remember my first time in Dominican Republic and Jamaica and being shocked that I couldn't communicate with anyone. Of course, apps like Google Translate didn't exist back then. 🙂 And you're so right, it's their country....we shouldn't expect them to automatically know English.

    You have to be somewhere consistently to know the other language for you to really understand. Again, it’s not your fault that you don’t know it’s just you’re not there consistently speaking the language. You’re doing your thing!!

    I would LOVE to be a flight attendant. But, with my tattoos, piercings and unconventional hair style/color, I wouldn't qualify. Luckily my job as a nurse doesn't even think about those things.

    • @malickmercier
      @malickmercier  9 місяців тому

      Aww yeah the industry is still pretty strict in regards to that but maybe there’s an airline for you or private flying could work…seems like these rules are slowly changing across the industry so keep your eyes open if you really want it! Nurses are cool in my book 😎 many transition from medicine to flying

    • @ClearwaterKB
      @ClearwaterKB 9 місяців тому

      @malickmercier I had previously looked into medical transport flights, but my kids were very little at the time, and I couldn't be flight ready in the required 30 minutes. Also, I think it would be a huge asset to have a flight attendant with a medical background. I always tell my kids when we are out in public, If there is an emergency, do not yell out I am a nurse. The legal implications vary, and I assess them on a case by case basis before I get involved.

    • @tihannabear
      @tihannabear 9 місяців тому

      Lots of airlines are now more flexible on these things now! Lots of our crew have visible piercings and tatts! None have funky hair colors as of right now but it wouldn't be frowned upon so long as you are professional presentable. :)

    • @tihannabear
      @tihannabear 9 місяців тому

      I agree! In 5 years from now you'll def see it more with the bigger airlines. Of course, some will always have strict protocol on this topic but not all. I work for an airline (not crew) and have hot pink hair, lots of tatts and piercings. A coworker who was a FA once had to put bandaids over wrist tatts but a year after they were allowed to be seen.

    It is interesting that you say that the Americans are entitled and that they don't speak any other language besides English. There are millions of people that live in the U.S.(many for decades) that do perfectly fine without speaking a lick of English ......Spanish is everywhere in the U.S. ie in the banks, in the buses, in the hospitals, in the airports!! The good news is that the immigrants from Latin America both legal and millions of illegals don't have to learn English in order to thrive in the U.S. and they know it too!!

    • @dahliar410
      @dahliar410 9 місяців тому +1

      It is so irresponsible and stupid to not learn the language in a country you’re fleeing to, and immigrants are not thriving they’re suffering in the worst ways because they won’t make the effort to learn🙄🙄

    • @genten777
      @genten777 9 місяців тому

      @@dahliar410 : I totally agree with you, but the reality is that the U.S. has now become a world on its own!! There are communities that actually are so insular that they really don't need to speak English and get all their work done by speaking their own native language or at best rudimentary English to get by. I was in LA last year and was kind of lost and needed some directions to Santa Monica.....it took me a little while to find someone who spoke English. So that is what the new reality is in the U.S. in many places.

The flights to and from was the best part as it was mostly Honduran people and very few Americans which was perfect. No Karens and no self-imposed entitlements.
