  • In this week's Wine with Adam, host, and CEO of Israel Innovation Fund, Adam Scott Bellos, is joined by ex-spy Jonathan Pollard in an exclusive tell-all interview.
Jonathan Pollard was sentenced to life in prison in 1987 for giving over highly confidential security documents to the Israelis while working for U.S. Naval Intelligence. The length of this sentence had long been protested as too harsh, and in 2015, Jonathan was allowed to go free after 35 years in prison. 5 years later, Pollard and his wife Esther made aliyah to Israel. The discussion takes place over a glass of Kabir Winery's Merlot.
    They discuss
    - The accusation of dual Loyalty
    - The true nature of the Israel/US "special" relationship
    - His time in prison
    - His late wife Esther

During the Irish troubles, many US citizens aided the terrorists, of the IRA. So, why aren't those of Irish descent treated as having dual loyalties? Many Muslims give money to CAIR, and other such groups, that give aid to terrorists. Why aren't they said to have dual loyalties? This screed against Jews, of having dual loyalties, has existed longer than Mr. Pollard, so he is not to blame. Such accusations are nothing more than a product of racism, unaffected by truth.

Ok but the reality that Pollard got the large sentence because of anti-Semitism. And many organization to helped Jonathan. That is the reality. Casper Weinberger had known issues with Judaism and of course his fathers side was Jewish and the attorney Joseph DiGenova also has shown his anti-Semtiism in recent years promoted various Soros conspiracy theories on fox news and Soros "controlling" the government which of course thoughts like that would lead to someone giving somene a disproportionate sentence. At the same time this is the first time hearing Jonatahan speak and I think he overexaggerates his own importance as of course facing injustice and being in prison of course there were Jews that wanting to help him and other Jews who wanted to "prove' there are loyal Americans by internalizing anti-Semitism but that is what this was about. It is sad that Pollard acts in using his own Martyr status as if he is more important than he really is. He admits his own spying was a minor affair so you can't have it both ways.
That he has shown that Americas love of Israel by some is duplicitous is not worth going to jail for and in fact the irony is Jews in the denomination he wants to associate (which denominationalism in reality is more a reflection of US Judaism then Israeli Judaism) the MO form of Judaism hasn't learned the lesson. They think Trump loves them and he doesn't all because of moving the embassy to West Jerusalem which changed nothing on the ground while he courts various vicious anti-Semites including claiming he didn't know who David Duke was.

It would be wonderful reflection to the Jewish diaspora. Pollard admitted shopping his services-successfully, in some cases-to other countries.[2] In 1987, he was sentenced to life in prison for violations of the Espionage Act. Pollard sold the intelligence to anybody for money including Israel. He was just a normal criminal. The Netflix movie should make him out as a normal criminal hiding behind antisemitism. This would lift the heavy feelings of the Jewish diaspora that he did this for his love for Israel. The movie should clearly show he did it for the money

Personally I think Pollard is more a martyr. He is not a hero but he is also not a traitor and he was very naive when younger and taken advantage by Rafi Eitan (just finished an audiobook of his capture of Eichman and his life) who left him to rot when the truth came out. The truth is as Pollard himself said and Weinberger his matter was a small matter. So even if Pollard gave photo's that America was denying which he had limited access to as a GS-14 (and didn't have access to sensitive docs) and for Israel it is very likely Israel would be able to do this without Americas help regardless to get the same info for themselves and being a lot closer being in the ME and Eitan had other reasons that he wanted to use Pollard far which Pollard didn't go along with him on that but Pollard was naive and taken advantage of. It is terrible that Pollard got a 30 year sentence that really deserved 5 years.
Also I for one don't feel his 2nd wife Esther helped that much. He served 30 years and got parolled after the 30 years so I don't see how she was able to help Pollard get out. And many people feel she was part of the reason Pollard became Paranoid about his family and stopped speaking to them. Stopped speaking to his sister and believed his father was hurting him which it is either her or YI and Rabbi Lerner that did this. This is classic Modern Orthodoxy turning children against their parents to make them become "more religious". For all his talk of loving his fellow Jew he was less so with his own family so in that regard I actually think is a failing on Jonathans part and his late wife of his, and even if they were critical of her as her sister was of Esther, she could have been more diplomatic about it and not tell Jonathan to cut her off to "protect her". And even the Jersualem Post article says about her is that she wasn't someone to cross which in many situations is not a good trait and especially when it comes to family it is not. In fact honoring ones parents is a major obligation in the torah and someone who tries to turn a son against their parents on false pretenses is violating the torah This was reported that people hurt him say that he believed his father was doing things to hurt them and it is utterly not true.
I think now he exaggerates his own importance. He can't have it both ways. If the matter was a small matter then maybe Israel didn't need it as much as Pollard thinks and if the USA didn't supply it Israel was fully capable of getting this info thru other intelligence and especially Israel is much closer to these countries in the ME then the USA is.
And many Jewish Americans do know that some Evangelists love Israel and they want the President to not pressure Israel so they are answering to their constituency even though privately they may not feel that way.
And many did support his cause and did feel he got a disproportionate sentence. Even though they don't see him as a "hero" which that is on Pollard not them. He did get paid for his services and didn't turn it down so that already compromised him although his main motivation was ideological.
It would be nice if he would realize that while he didn't deserve what he got but at the same time if he got what he deserved and 5 years and not these false anti-Semitic claims of him bigging huge spy he would be unknown today if he only served what he deserved since it wasn't such a big matter. He actually benefits the most from being a martyr for his unfair sentence and that is what he should realize not that he is some hero as the person who was his handler had other reason to use him as a spy.
And lastly he makes it out that it is such a big deal that he "exposed" how America is false in their relationship with Israel but that is not worth spying for. This knowledge has come out from other events including the Nixon tapes with Billy Graham. That is not worth spying for to prove someone is double talking. It will come out sooner or later.
