I'm always getting asked to break down drum licks. Drum licks to impress your friends. Drum licks to impress your girlfriend. Drum licks that will make my drumming sound impressive...lol, it's somewhat exhausting because the focus can become "how do I sound impressive?" instead of "how can I become a more musical drummer?".
In this drum tutorial I break out a drum lick that has come to be known as the Blushda. Many people think it is a drum rudiment...it's not. It's a variation on a popular drum rudiment, but it is not a rudiment itself. It was first popularized by Tony Williams but is used by SO many fantastic drummers. Each one of them puts their own spin on this lick. And that's what I want you to do as well. Take it, learn it, and then make it your own.
So for all of you asking me for a drum lesson on an impressive drum lick that you can use to impress all of your friends...this drum lick will do it. But I sure hope that's not what you use it for. I hope you use it to help you become a better musician.
Here's the Steve Holmes lesson that I reference. Please be sure to check it out and tell Steve I asked you to stop by: • The Definitive Blushda...

Your snare sounds awesome my friend!
I think it's based on flam drag rudiment..
i remember when i was 13 and i played this and thought i invented a new rudiment
Nick Witt I remember when I was 14 and played 16th notes and thought I invented them.
I’m being very serious by the way lol
My teacher listened and was like “yea, those are 16th notes”. I was pretty bummed.
The alternating version is pretty much a flam drag - #30 on the 40 PAS rudiments list.
The fact that you were able to come up with it without even knowing of it is already something to be proud of.
The blushda lives on!! Cool video and thank you for the mention sir!
BlushdaBlu-blushdaBLOOOOSH!!
Really love what you do Steve. Thanks for your passion
You are right this drum lick is pretty amazing , and it’s time we all learned it. Thx for showing us how to play it
You bet gary
his right what?
you're *
When I first subscribed to you on youtube I was thinking "yeah, he's a pretty good but kind of stiff run of the mill rock drummer, not playing anything very advanced, not playing everything super tight, but he has some good lessons, well thought out arguments and he seems like a really nice guy" - but for the last year or so I think you've really levelled up your drumming. It's creative, fast, complex, dynamic, relaxed, fun and super tight. Maybe you've always been like that, only that you just aren't interested in being a flashy showoff, like the opposite of Adam Tuminaro, but my impression of your drumming now is far above what it was when I first found your channel, and that makes me very happy when I watch your content! Very inspirational!
Thanks so much Patrick. I appreciate the kind words. And it would veer much more towards the end of i am really not seeking to impress anyone. So if I’m teaching a simple drum fill, you won’t see me throw a bunch of licks in there as well. It’ll just be the simple fill. I’ve got a music project in the works that will hopefully give me a chance to showcase more of my playing in a musical setting, which is honestly where I’m most comfortable. Thanks again for the kind words!
Adam’s videos are unbearable
I can’t believe that in the one million nine hundred and 99 thousand drum videos iv watched over the years Iv never seen this fill, but now I won’t be able to get enough of it, What a great fill and Stephen you knocked it out of the park with this one.
Thanks Lynda!
Been playing drums since 1990, big Tony Williams fan, I even graduated music school, how is it I've never heard of this before??? This was awesome. I've probably heard Proto Cosmos at least a few hundred times. This totally opened my mind up a little more to what Tony was doing.
Now that you know about it you’ll hear it everywhere. He uses it very tastefully
That hardwood wall makes it look like _you're_ hanging from the wall, suspended over a hardwood floor. Nice effect. 👍
Great lesson. I've loved this lick since I first noticed Gavin Harrison using it (he has some very creative uses of it: 3 minutes, 44 seconds into the him playing Porcupine Tree's "Futile" live is a great example). Thanks for breaking it down clearly!
Who the f would thumbs down this?! This is your best video yet!
The video and audio quality was top-notch! It seems like it’s important (in addition to counting and timing) that we have to maintain the volume separation of accented and non-accented notes, to add that other dimension to an already complex pattern.
Super cool man!
Thanks so much Mike
Digging the love thrown to Steve Holmes!!!! Love your vids because you just always have the utmost respect for those who paved the way!!! You're a beast!!!!
Thanks so much Kraig
Thank you for the great content!!!
Tony Williams and 'his' predecessors were the innovators of the 'so called' blushda! To explain "TONY WILLIAMS" Licks in terms of the Steve(s),Todds,Vinnies,Novacks, Gadds,.et.al. As if Tony is merely 'incidental', ( none of whom would be worth listening to without 'their' major reliance on Tonys💩) is blasphemous!! Tony Williams is "credited"🤔 with this and many other licks and interpretations, because it's "TONY'S" 🥁SHIT, period!!--"FREE BILL COSBY" And All Innocent BlackAmericanDOS, Political and Cultural Prisoners of W/S!!
There are 42 thumbs down on this video. I remember in 1988 hearing Steve Smith's do this lick. I spent months trying to figure it out. I figured it out, but it was only one variation. This video shows several different variations and a free PDF. The video is free also. What is wrong with people these days who are so quick to give thumbs down?!!!!!
You got me lol
After watching Eric Moore's video a few years back, I tried learning his blushda; but ended up creating a hybrid between a blushda and Juan Carlito Mendoza's Stutter. It's basically a herta between a rack tom (R) and snare rim shot (L), except the Ls are all accented and there's a kick flamming the second R. Idk if I meant for it to be a flam or if I'm just imprecise with my kick; but it sounds cool, so I use it
That sounds like it sounds pretty hip!
@@StephenTaylorDrums definitely man! I'm still a little inconsistent on my kick placememt; but even just the hands-only sounds really cool. I like using it in latin music, prolly cuz of JCM hahah
video pls. :)
Finally, the perfect video. I've been trying to figure this out for years
And I’ve been trying to make the perfect video for years. So now I’m retiring...
At the 8:05 mark, when you put the 4 Blushdas + 4 single strokes into grooves, it’s so inspiring. Your explanations always makes me feel like I can play anything you teach. I can’t, but you make me want to try it and be a better drummer.
BludgeonRiffola87 you can do anything I can. Just takes a little work. And thank you, so glad the videos inspire you that way!
Thanks Stephen, this is one I never bothered to learn. Awesome!
You bet chris
Thanks for the speedy response. I’ll check.
Stephen, thanks for a great creative lesson on how to incorporate the Blushda in our playing. A million thanks man!
You bet!
I haven't 'tuned in' in about a month or so as I've been going down the songwriting rabbit hole. Your heads are clear now!!! Why the change?
Jordan Thoreson i wanted more attack and a little more defined tone to them. So clear double ply. Really enjoying them
@@StephenTaylorDrums could you do a video on drun heads?
I've seen some of your past videos but wasn't compelled to subscribe... till today! Great explanation and break down of the blushda, thank you.
Thanks so much David. Glad this one hit home with you. And glad to have ya hanging here with me my friend.
Great explanation with demonstrations! Loving the drum sounds too!
Stephen I missed this three years ago. Great lesson. And I think some of your best fill playing with all of the options from your chunks. Thanks very much. Bill.
Very helpful, well explained! Thank you!
So glad it helped
I am a beginner drummer but its a pleasure to see your mastered art. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this very important and a must for anyone either just learning or at least about 6 months to a year of learning/mastering the Buddy Rich's essential Snare drum rudiments.
Way to take it further. I love all the extra ideas. Spices up the blushda in creative ways.
I see this lick as a very loose flam followed by a lose diddle in triplicate. Unacceptable by DCI standards, perfect for the kit. Thank you for this lesson!
So good, especially that spicy groove at the end! Excited to try this out! Thank you so much for making this video!
Glad it hit ya where you needed it to
Great lesson, nice variations! Thanks for including sheet music.
I’ve been playing a close variation to this for a long time and never knew it was called the “Blushda.” I just thought I was playing a fancy accented flam lick. Haha. Always love your in depth videos. Thanks man.
👊🏻🙏🏼
Great lesson from a great teacher. Thank you, man.
Kick ass video! cheers from an old Las Vegas drummer!!
I like you only have to say "Vinnie" in passing, and that's enough. Everyone know.
Very useful...your blusda’s sounds awesome🔥🥁🔥 thx for the free notation..big fan from Denmark here🌎❤️
Yes. Another lesson to learn ❤️ Thanks so much, really learning a lot from you plus your fills has names 😁 easy to remember.
So glad they’re helping
Stephen!!!!! A fantastic lesson on this iconic fill. The first time I heard the Blushda was watching Benny Greb doing it on his "Greb Fruit" song, but I recently learned it from "Todd Sucherman" doing his "Rock Drumming Master Class" course. You were very funky at the end with this fill. You are a really good educator and this was a great lesson on how infinite the possibilities are with the "Blushda" Thanks man and "Rock On."
Amazing work thank you 🙏
Always provides great ideas to change up the drumming.
👊🏻🙏🏼
This is definitely one of the coolest fills I’ve ever learned, and you explained it really well! Thank you
Thanks josh
This is the best explanation of the blushda that I have seen. Thank you.
Ótima licão!!❤
Great video. Thanks.
Fantastic as always! Thanks as always, Stephen!
You bet!
Awesome Stephen! Your kit keeps sounding more killer every vid!
Thanks so much!
Great lesson, as always. Thank you!
You bet
Many hours invested. You're such an awesome, inspirational drummer yeah thank you for these videos!
Thanks Kurtis
I have that same snare and absolutely love it.
Great stuff!
Wow what a cool lick...one of those you hear but don’t know the true sticking with out seeing it. Thanks Stephen! Yet another awesome lesson👍🏻🙌🏻
Anthony Medd Thanks!
I've seen you do fills like this in other videos. I'm so excited to learn this when I get off Haha much appreciated brotha
You bet Jim
I remember being blown away by Steve Holmes years ago. But for some reason I didn't sit down and practice it...until I watched your lesson. Amazing job, great variations and you made it easy to understand. Kudos Stephen Taylor.
Thanks Gary!
The best lesson on Blushdas!🥃
excellent! work ! thanks
You bet!
All those variations you have going on at the end sound KILLER
👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
nice playing and great educational approach.
Thanks Robert!
Great lick! Well executed.
Thanks Bob
I've always done this by playing Swiss Triplets and playing a diddle on the second partial. Feels really comfortable to me and is easier to move around the kit though it does feel a *little* different. It's a really nice sticking, though, because the lead hand plays the same sticking for Paradiddlediddles, which I switch between often during fills or solos! :)
Really cool, man. Great lesson
Thanks Sean
Great video, never come across this lick till now. gonna get on it. Thank you
Glad it helped Billy
@@StephenTaylorDrums it defo will help out , just gotta find time to learn it. cheers for the link to sheet music too
Time Warp is one of my favourite Chick Corea albums; I think it has such a different sound & vibe to any of his (many many) others! Love Novak’s drumming on it 😊
It’s so good. I had honestly not listened to Novak in years and this made me dig back in to him some more
Awesome lesson bro.
Thanks so much Tim. Glad it helped
Can't wait to have a go at this.
Thanks for giving us a history lesson to impress our friends with!
I’m here for all of your drum nerd needs 🤓
This was a great video. Thanks for sharing. I'm on it!!!
Glad it helped!
Nice work bro. Glad I found your channel.
Thanks! Glad to have you hanging here as well
Good stuff, I’m hearing Carter Beauford Dave Matthews Band.
Hey... This is nice one... Specially sound good when play with 16th notes metronome..
Thanks!
NEW HEADS!!! Yet another great video to help us remember some of the "little" things that make DRUMS so AWESOME to play...yeah I'm a drummer...so cool!! Thanks Stephen!!
For sure...double ply clears. Trying something new. Glad ya dig it!
awesome, I never heard of it being called this, yea flam accent in a trip. I am no expert, but a good way to get used to this is to run a paradiddle in triplet configuration.
My double strokes aren't very strong so I created what I think is a variation of this by replacing the first hit after the flam with a kick so I could follow it with R L. Used it for a cover of You may be right by Billy Joel in the chorus section usually filled with straight quarter notes.
Awesome! Whenever I'm in a funk (the negative kind), I check your channel and find some inspiration. My next paycheck I'm signing up for the drum better daily experience. But, I was wondering if you do "form checks"? I am worried that my sticking technique isn't up to par being a self taught drummer on a small island.
For sure I do...just send in a video once you’re signed up. The experience with the membership is as personal as you want it to be. There is also an entire course on technique that I think will be right up your alley.
Stephen, you are a great drummer, but also a great person! Thanks!!!
Thanks so much Joe
Awesome Steve. Never mind the Blushtas, I love that groove you’re doing there !
Lol, thank you my friend
Fantastic video I can not wait to try this
Thanks Dave...so glad it helped!
Gracias taylor
Well, I'm gonna be wearing this one out. Thank you!
You bet brotha
Thanks awesome & very informative👏👏👏👏🥁🥁🥁🇨🇦🇨🇦
You’re more than welcome Remy
Great lesson
Thanks so much Andrew
Are you playing anywhere the next couple of days? I’m in Nashville for the first time ever and I’d like to come see ya!
I’m playing tin roof on broadway upstairs Saturday night from 6:30-10pm
that ride sounds soooo dreamy!
Oh yea, she fine
Love your vids. A little off time there staring around 8:22 eh? Lol just giving you a hard time. Thanks for the lessons, helps my drumming a lot.
I didn't realise this was an 18 minute video. The edit was on the money here, kept me interested and engaged the whole way through. Nice work!
Thanks so much...glad it kept ya interested!
@@StephenTaylorDrums Not that I'm ADHD or anything, just that you were demonstrating a lot of iterations of the fill.
Hi, nice drumming!!
Thanks jacob!
@@StephenTaylorDrums no prob man, keep it going!!👍👍👍
HA!! I was just watching Bissonette talking about this (Gregg Bissonette's Signature Drum Lick)
I can do this..only when I've had at least two Monster energy drinks :/ it also gives me anxiety :) Thank you for this, very helpful
Eggsellent work Stephen. Great close ups of your hands. Hope you have a 'Ride On' mower that turns on a dime. :-)
Oh yea, if you’re gonna have that much yard you gotta come correct with the mower you use 🙏🏼
Phenomenal!
Pat Thomas Thanks Pat!
Can't wait to learn this one, big cat! Thank you.
You bet travis
Thank you. 🖒🖒
You’re welcome!
Very nice video. Also how do you make your tombs.and snares sound flat? , i love that sound. Ive tapped all my drums and im barely getting results.
I’ve tweaked these for a while. The final touch was switching to clear double ply on the toms and a single ply on the snare with one drum dot.
Stephen, Great tutorial! What is your cymbal setup on this clip? Thanks.
It should be in the video description for ya
Thanks Stephen. Question on posture: Do you sit on the edge of ur seat when play or fully on?
Fully on for the most part
I learnt this lick in person off Gregg Bissonette!!
What’s the difference between blushda and hertas? They sound the same for some reason or maybe not... please tell me I’m really confused
I sorta picked this lick up by osmosis in college. I didn’t realize it had a name. Always sounds impressive, as you say.
If you mess with the rudiments I mention in the video it does naturally start to happen
Used as the full-in to the Tonight Show theme!
At about 4:44 in Fool In The Rain is that a Blushda lick?
I think Bonham used a version of this on Carouselambra- 6:19 in?
blushed impressed everyone in 2000.. is a bit outdated
What’s the snare drum? Couldn’t find it in the description. Sounds awesome.
Great lesson I might add!
That's a Tama Starphonic. And thanks!
