Tombi!/Tomba! (PS1) | The Rarest Game in my Collection!?

  • This is a review of Tombi (or Tomba, as it's known in America), which was developed by Whoopee Camp, published by Sony Computer Entertainment and released in 1998 for the PS1. Because there was never very many copies of the game printed, it quickly became one of the rarer games on the original PlayStation. What made it even more sought after was the fact that it was actually promoted quite heavily in magazines and was even featured on demo discs too, meaning that lots of people knew about it, but very few would have managed to actually get hold of it.
    I'm one of the lucky people who actually got this game when it first released as a Christmas present in 1998 after playing the demo and it's remained an integral part of my collection ever since. I have extremely fond memories of Tombi, but does it actually live up to those memories? Let's find out together!

    Also, apologies for not saying this before, but this was a really excellent review and showcase of the game. You seem to get more confident on camera with every video I see of yours and you strike me as a really decent guy :) I'll enjoy watching your content for some time to come

    Excuse me what in the god damn was that apple trick? This is one of my favourite games of all time and I've 100% it multiple times but never thought to throw a pig at that particular blue apple to feed the plant to turn it into a flower. Apparently you find another flower later to avoid trapping I assume the 99.9% of players that just picked it up for the health? I can't believe it, thanks for blowing my mind in a way I can never explain to anyone else without getting sectioned. How many other secrets are still hidden in this unfathomable game I wonder

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 роки тому

      Oh... I always did that whenever I played through the game :D I didn't even know there was another way of getting the flower haha! Another similar thing is that if you unlock the second chest in the mansion before helping Charles on the Stormy Mountain, you actually get the Funky Parasol from the chest, rather as a gift from Charles. That's probably more widely known but it's another example of an alternate method of getting an item.
      I'm glad that I could teach a veteran of the series something new! Even if it was totally accidental haha! :D

      Yeah, then it would have been re-released as a platinum/greatest hits version and it probably wouldn't be so rare! To be honest though I'm not even sure that enough copies were ever even printed for that to become possible!

    Ooooh, I hope SegaBlocks sees this video--I'll share it out to him!
    That was me--first experience was via a demo disc. A buddy and I both enjoyed it and he bought it so we played it a lot, but I've yet to ever get my own copy and I really want to because it's so good!
    I really enjoyed the 2.5D gameplay style. It's held up incredibly well, but even then I hoped we'd see more of it. When so many others were trying to go full 3D (with mixed results) I wondered we we didn't see more of this "transitional" style that works so well.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Рік тому +1

      I had never heard of SegaBlocks before! I've just been checking out some of his videos, it's good to know there are more Tombi fans out there!
      I bet more people played the demo of this than actually had the full game! It really wouldn't surprise me if there were more of those demo discs printed than actual copies of the game.
      Yeah the 2.5D elements are done exceptionally well here and it's a shame that this didn't inspire more developers to do more stuff like this. Klonoa is sort of similar but that's more of a straight up platformer so it's not really the same thing.

    • @DoYouNerd
      @DoYouNerd Рік тому

      @@PixelPursuit He's got a great channel, so we're glad to have introduced him to you--especially through Tombi love!
      Now that you mention it, I bet lots of games have that credo from the demo more than the game disc itself. There were plenty of things I liked playing just the demo to and never even sought out the game.
      Feeling you on the Klonoa front--similar but soooo different and honestly, I loved the blending of some RPG lite elements to the puzzle solving with our pink haired hero more anyway.

    The Tomba Club UA-cam page mentions of a whole deleted area of the game and that he jungle was supposed to be bigger and another fortune teller was also scrapped there was a deadline unfortunately and perhaps budgetary reasons as well. I'd check em out for sure whoever is reading this. 📚

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Рік тому +1

      That definitely explains why the very end of the game feels a little bit rushed! Luckily it isn't too big of an issue though because the game is long enough as it is, but it would have been interesting to see what the ending would have been like if they had more time!
      Maybe if it ever gets a remake!

  • @ScherrHrenner

    I had a lot of fun with this game when I played a borrowed copy back then in 2005. Some years ago, I remembered the game, looked up some information on it (where I also heard about the sequel for the first time) and went back to enjoy sme pices of its soundtrack, the themes from that stormy mountain and the regular boss fights being my favourites.
    The boss fights, however, are really quite disappointing, just as you said. I mean, what's up with one-hitting every one of them? How's that supposed to be a boss fight?

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Рік тому +1

      It is a ton of fun, even if it is very slightly flawed. It seems that the sequel is much less known than the first game. I don't remember exactly when I first heard about it, but it would have been quite a long time after it released.
      But yeah, potentially the biggest downfall of the entire game is the combat. They could have come up with some way more interesting ideas for the enemies and especially the bosses! At least make the final boss be a bit different!

      @ammanus356 2 роки тому +1

      @@PixelPursuit if you arent against emulating games, I'd recommend just emulating it. Emulation is there to save you a fortune on games, and then if you're in a position in future to do so, buy it then :)

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 роки тому

      I'm definitely not against emulation, I tend to stick to real hardware whenever I can though but some games are so difficult or expensive to track down that it's not always possible to do that. Also, there's been several cases in the past where I've emulated stuff to record footage if it's something like a 3DS game where I can't record from the actual console.
      But yeah, most likely if I ever review Tombi 2 it will be because I've emulated it, but you never know! Maybe I'll see a good deal one day and get the real thing!
