Way off in a small town in the Canadian maritime provinces, the first thing that was available to us was the red-boxed Basic Set. It wasn't until many years later that I became aware that there had been an earlier Basic Set. It's nice to expand my historiography of D&D! I'll have to research the nuances between the two (other than cosmetic).
I hope I am not double posting, but it seems my last post failed. Anyways, I am writing from Switzerland. I have learned from Jim's news letter that "The Green Griffon" on page 193 of the DMG is a real building existing on The Street of Knights in Rhodes. I would sincerely like to put together a group of like-minded folks to make an offer to buy that building, Are you the guy to talk to to to put me in contact with the relevant folks locally to make an inquiry?
@@theoldwarlockunfortunately an extremely busy schedule left my gaming activities a little down but I am coming back stronger! I will listen to your podcasts to see what I ve missed!
It's also hillarious that Jim and Alex are like the rest of us "Chris, you are a God of DnD" and he is like "wtf dude, I am just a nerd" 🤣🤣🤣 What a cool guy!!! Cheers!
@@theoldwarlockof course it's me! :D I've been a little far from UA-cam, but I was missing the Warlock and so I'm rewatching some of your stuff and catching up. Yours is hands down the best D&D related channel around. You're still faithful to the original Old Warlock spirit: empathy, humor, true gaming culture, no clickbait and toxic stuff! I love you guys!
It's good that Chris is still gaming. He is also correct about Old Warlock's format/ show. The father/son team is really cool. and enjoyable to watch. Makes me feel like putting a consortium together to buy The Green Griffon in Rhodes, where Jim could hold court.
Chris! I never got back to you about the actual location of the Green Griffon did I. Sorry about that - been a rough month. I'll try and narrow down the exact point and get it to you.
Started with that box in Sept 79. A week latter I had the AD&D HB book or 1st ed as many of us call it. Interesting chat. The Monk... I don't allow monks in my realm. Monks are the guys locked up in a monetary transcribing books and scrolls. The Monk of 3/3.5 and forward are WAY to powerful now. I know many who LOVE to play them. I played an Assassin once. The DM of the game asked me to play it and go after every party member, but not get caught, yet act like an Allie. I succeeded and wiped them all out and only the last one figured it out after they were dead.
I stumbled across the Holmes blue book (only, no set) left abandoned outside my middle school 70 years or so back. That book was my gateway drug, and my first "what the f**k is this?!?" moment. Not much made sense to me during my first read-through or two, but after a while...(almost) all became clear. Sadly, my mother would later toss it in the trash....along with many other artifacts of the era (Runequest 2e, Stormbringer 1e, OD&D White box, Gamma World, my AD&D 1e books including Deities & Demigods, and so many more). Grrr......aaarrrrrgggh. Great interview, though. Thank you, gents! ⚔🍻
Wow. We actually feel the pain of those things being thrown away. Sorry it's all gone. Glad you enjoyed the interview, though. Have you purchased new copies of any of those lost items?
@@theoldwarlock Thanks! I have purchased PDFs of some of the 1e AD&D books and some others, here and there. I doubt I'm going to find Stormbringer 1E at a price I'd be comfortable paying, but I did find the 5e version of it. 🍻
Great video to start the New Year. Natsukashii!!! Looking forward to an amazing new year of videos. And I hope Alex gets a weekend furlough so he can get out and about. Fresh air does a body good. Thanks for the interview with Chris. A lot of fun and interesting to hear his stories. Jim should consider a second career in Nerd Gamer Studies interviews.
Excellent questions and enjoyable interview, what a great opportunity! I'd be very interested to hear you guys talk through that TB1 module and/or Islands of Peril if you get your hands on them.
@theoldwarlock Hey! I've been a bit less involved in watching rpg stuff on YT. Always happy to find myself back with you guys! That was a really cool interview indeed!
I got Holmes basic box set for my 13th birthday in 1978 and never looked back!
It's been pretty much all we've ever needed.
This was great! Thanks, gentlemen! Thanks, Mr. Holmes!! 🤓👊

Careful Mark! There are some deep rabbit holes to go down! Should be fun, though. You might look up "Zenopus." Fun place to start.
Great interview. Got started with Holmes Basic when it came out in 77.A friend's brother was given a copy and wasnt intetested, so we started playing.
Thanks, Scott. Glad you liked it!
