My Father watched every single episode of Next Gen, DS9, and Voyager as it aired and he would also tape it on VHS simultaneously, pausing the recordings for commercials most of the time. Thats how I watched this whole era of star trek, with a superfan as a father, live. It was part of life. DS9 is the most rewatchable over and over, IMO.
I have to agree, which is strange because as someone who also grew up on TNG, my parents were never really that interested in DS9, but were all over Voyager when it came out.
Yep, i did the same thing. It was on late at night and i had school the next day but didn't give a stuff! I stayed up and taped it. Except a couple of TNG episodes that scared me so i went to bed LoL.
My uncle and I watched Trek like that. I still have some of his VHS tapes. I watch them with my son. ☺️
I agree that ds9 is more watchable. Tng is just too much of a hippy-dippy peace and love kumbaya fantasy. Whereas ds9 is what a realistic StarTrek universe would be like. Gritty dirty with little kids going hungry instead of the crisp clean freshly sanitized for your protection with a free of charge replicator every 2m. And don't even get me started on Capt bi-polar janeway.

One you missed was the story arc when Kira Nerys had Miles O'Brien's and Keiko's baby. In the story, this was presented as a surrogate motherhood because of an accident. In reality, the baby was Alexander Sidig's. There's even a scene where Kira tells Doctor Bashir that the pregnancy "was his fault!"
Now that's breaking the 4th wall! lol

By the way, "Our Man Bashir" is not only one of the best Garak/Bashir episodes, but also one of the best Star Trek comedic episodes - period. So many great oneliners: "Kiss the girl, get the key - they never taught me this at the Obsidian Order" - "Congratulations, you saved the day by destroying the world" - can't stop laughing.

‘His Way’, ‘Take me out to the Holosuite’, and ‘Bada bing, Bada bang’ were some of the best trek eps despite not progressing the Dominion arc.
Why?
Because they greatly progressed the character arcs.
I'll never forgive the stretching of the showdown between Garak and Bashir. Instead of saying "Computer, exit," he says "Computer, show me the mechanism to-" before getting shot by Bashir. Like......it's supposed to be a race against time here. I'll forever be curious as to what the rest of that command would have sounded like, but that little inaccuracy will always bother me

And this re-humbling made his final showdown at Quark's, with his Vulcan rival, just so satisfying!

Some of the best examples of character development I've ever seen in any show, not just sci-fi or Trek. Nog's character arc took him from an illiterate juvenile delinquent to a frickin' war hero who ultimately got a ship named after him.

what else especially in the first few seasons did they have to do.... by the shear nature of the show it had to be character driven to even keep going. They had no choice but to focus on good Character development.
@Josh Oliver oh you mean the flying phaser... cause literally it looks from most angles like a combination of the Level 2 phaser in TNG and every TOS hand phaser. Other then that tail, probably added so it wouldn't literally look like a flying phaser.

I think Jake should have dated Ziyal. There would have been a kind of Romeo and Juliet thing with them, particularly given how much Sisko and Dukat disliked each other, and her death would have had an interesting impact on Jake's character, particularly the parallels between her death and that of his mother.
This is one of the few cases where "more romance" would have caused less cringe, as then her relationship with garak would be more clearly labled as avuncular.
Personally, I think the whole Jake character was an ongoing story of patchy development and missed opportunities. However, given the number of brilliant characters in the show, it would have been hard for the writers to fully develop all of them.

Actually, I don't think Dukat disliked Sisko. It was more that Dukat was annoyed that Sisko apparently hated him for no reason. Dukat was the epitome of the pathological Cardassian need to be liked by others and have them acknowledge that the things the Cardassians did actually benefited those they did them to, that they were in fact, 'right' to have done them. IE the invasion and occupation of Bajor. Through the series Dukat got more and more annoyed with Sisko's intransigence in refusing to come around to Dukat's point of view.
The problem with Jake dating Ziyal would have been the disparity in ages between the actors. Cirroc Lofton was born in 1978. The three actresses who played Ziyal were born in 1972, 1970 and 1962 respectively. This would likely have become extremely obvious had they done relationship scenes together.
The reason why DS9 stands out so much is not just that it‘s a station rather than a ship but it‘s extraordinary characters.
Normally, all the main characters are human starfleet officers. A few aliens but all with federation standards.
The sheer variety of DS9 characters from different societies makes it much more interesting than a bunch of officers dealing with a situation in a streamlined way.
Yes, sometimes there would be a conversation between a few characters, none of whom were human. I think that's unique to DS9.

He's certainly one of the most relatable characters I've ever seen on Trek.
One of the best things about DS9 was that, compared to other Trek where there were usually clearly defined lines between black and white, DS9 explored the shades of gray. And no one character better embodied that gray area than Garak.
I've said it before and will say it again: Garak is one of the all time greatest Star Trek characters, recurring or otherwise. Andrew Robinson is a gem.
Sisko's Monologue at the end of "In the pale moonlight" really defined that shade of grey, a starfleet captain, participating in the assassination of a romulan senator, all in order to bring them in to the alpha/beta quadrant alliance. And his initial justification of it, creeping in to uncertainty and doubt as he tries to convince not we the viewer, but himself that he did the right thing.
"So... I lied. I cheated. I bribed men to cover the crimes of other men. I am an accessory to murder. But the most damning thing of all... I think I can live with it. And if I had to do it all over again - I would. Garak was right about one thing: a guilty conscience is a small price to pay for the safety of the Alpha Quadrant. So I will learn to live with it... Because I can live with it... I can live with it... Computer - erase that entire personal log. "
Garak was the best. Give me a loquacious scoundrel like Garak or Quark over boringly stoic Worf any day.
This is a fantastic comment about the various series.
TOS was the original. It made everything following possible.
TNG was the "ideal" federation. Diplomatic (mostly), and reasonable.
DS9 showed that everything wasn't as rosey as the flagship made it seem. And the characters really were fantastic.
Voyager... well, it happened.
Quark's and Odo's 'friendship' was actually well written. That last not-goodbay between those two was amazing.

Yep, that's _DS9_ alright. But when the show nailed those ambitions, _DS9_ created some of the best episodes in _Star Trek._
the best monologue in the entire franchise. Watching Sisko defiantly defend his actions of violating his oath as a starfleet officer, and being able to live with such an act, how he repeats himself multiple times as if though not to convince us, but to convince himself that it was the right thing to do.

@@Locutus494 I think so. Maybe the second though, the Inner Light is a SOLID contender for it(TNG), as is "The Visitor" (in DS9 as well)
Maybe they couldn't get a named star for the main cast, but they could get guest stars like Harris Yulin in the first season and knock it out of the park.
I'm glad the Dominion plot line was expanded. They're my favourite trek antagonists ever. I liked Ro from TNG but Major Kira was still a great character though. DS9 just wouldn't be the same without Nerys.
I do wish I could access the alternative timeline where Ro Laren was in DS9 because that was a great character, but I wouldn't want deprived of Nana Vistor's Kira because holy crap did she ever knock that role out of the park. I'm in the midst of another DS9 rewatch and I'm just blown away with how great she is.
In some of the later DS9 novels, they did manage to bring Ro Laren onto the station, as sort of a replacement for Odo (or was it Kira🤔).
I think fans would’ve grown tired of the Ro character after a season or two. She was angry and frustrated all the time. Ro having a lighter side to go with the tough exterior just wouldn’t have worked in my opinion.
Well, if she did join and remain with The Maquis, then she probably ended up having a very lousy day when the Cardassians joined the Dominion
Maybe a good Character in Terms of Storytelling - but not as a "Person". She is the Person Garak would be if he had not turned his Back on Revenge and the hatred that was taught her.
And such "deeply broken Characters" are quite easy to create. She is just the Edgelord-Rogue-ThatGuy-Player in a DnD-Group you want to kick out ASAP.
I was never keen on Michelle Forbes, she worked well in a few TNG episodes but I'm glad she wasn't a main character. As for Kira, I never liked her and couldn't get past her horrible ugly hairstyle. I hated all the women's hair in TNG and DS9. They should have put Leah Brahms on DS9, she was just lovely :-) (I know she was in 1 episode as a different character but that doesn't count)
Best thing the show gave us: mirror universe Kira (the Intendant).
Best thing the show never gave us: Garak in his Obsidian order days.
If they did that, you would need make the account contradictory; unbelievable; and strongly pro-Cardassian insofar as the way they were at that time. After all, what tale of Garak's life in the Order would be truer than the lies.

Read a stitch in time by Garak. It explores those back Obsidian order days and rebuilding Cardassia post dominion war
...and a bunch of Klingon Lore and Romance. A deep insight in a Ferengi Household. Religion and Spirituality. Starfleet Terrorism. The Cardassians. Section 31. An insight in the Worlds History of Earth before Cochrans Flight and the Federation, especially the Wars.
DS9 created so much more Lore than any other Series before - and it questioned the former Series regarding Gender Eaquality and sexual Freedom and Repressions due to them. It asked the Question about SJWs before thoose were a big Thing.
TNG opened the Doors to the Star Treck Universe Theme Park and DS9 put the main Attractions in there.
I always skip the mirror universe episodes as they’re just a bit too corny with a touch of glam rock in my opinion. In fact the only series which pulls off mirror universe in a compelling way is Discovery, a series I generally can’t stand - I just want someone to toss the belligerent Michael out of an airlock.
I'm still holding out hopes for Star Trek: O'Brien.

No one could have been a better Sisko then Avery Brooks. He had a tough guy grace that is just unduplicated. He will forever be the best Starfleet ever turned out. Even if he lives baseball

Another fun Morn fact. Despite characters portraying morn as a chatter box who never stops blabbing, he never said a word onscreen. This is coupled with the fact the prosthetics do have a working mouth, so the actor could talk. But the writer thought it would be funnier to have him stay silent.
I thought the prosthetics didn't really let him talk, so him being a chatter box off screen became a running joke

You missed probably the biggest behind the scenes fact... Visitor and siddig dated, visitor got pregnant in season 4/5 and instead of writing her out, Kira was written in to carry the O'Brians baby, then a year after she gave birth her and siddig got married
better yet, the first episode of season 5, Kira tells Bashir that her pregnancy is his fault
Would’ve honestly been a smarter move to make Kira’s pregnancy be Bariel’s baby. There could’ve been so many political and religious implications.

or how about Patricia Tallman who played leeta also played Lyta Alexander on Babylon 5 and in both cases she's a fan fave character.....

One of my favorite bits of Star Trek trivia was that Andrew Robinson wrote an extensive character bio for Garak, and except for some bits of Cardassian history that went against what the show runners had set up in their series bible, the producers liked what he wrote and let him use it in his character. Robinson would later use his character bio as the basis for a DS9 novel, "A Stitch In Time" regarding Garak's dealing with his home world being decimated by the Dominion.

9:30 Bashir's ethnicity being kept vague I think is a nod to the fact that the actor who played him was multiethnic as well. Alexander Siddig's full birthname is Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abdurrahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi. His father was Sudanese, and his mother was English. His mother was Malcolm McDowell's older sister. His father's brother was the Prime Minister of Sudan twice, including the year after Alexander was born.
In the two or so first season, his name on the credits was Fadil something, well, his real name.
It got only later changed to Alexander Siddig.
To me, he was obviously of Arabic descent.

The worst part about the TNG/DS9 era was the first run syndication. TNG was ok. It was every Saturday at 7pm on the local NBC station for the entire run. But DS9 was all over the place. First it was on NBC at 6pm. Then the local Fox station at 9pm. Then 10pm. Then Sunday at 7pm. Then 10pm. Then 11pm. Keeping track of that season to season was nuts.
I didn't see a single episode when it was on air - I wound up binging it a few years ago, and it is probably my favorite ST franchise.
Same. At that time, I was only watching reruns of The Original Series and Next Generation. I only started watching DS9 on the DVD seasons during the past year.
man you missed out Deep space nine had the best all time cliffhanger episodes in sci fi history only thing I think comes close is the X files
I remember the dam anxiety i felt when i watched the cliffhanger episodes and had to wait a week or an entire summer for the conclusion

@@triptrip8353 Some of the best romantic subplots as well. I hate it when they just tack on a romantic subplot somewhere it doesn't fit - always feels cringey. DS9 writers seemed to take their time and develop the characters first so the romantic developments actually seemed to develop.
@@triptrip8353 I haven't gotten to the Dominion War yet. My favorite Season One episode is Duet. Harris Yulin's performance as Marritza, who feels guilty about the atrocities committed by Darhe'el, literally had me crying.
Yeah. I was way into TNG, but passed on DS9 when it aired. I also binged it a couple years ago and I think it's my favorite series.
One of Rene's audition stories: the umpteenth executive to hear one of his readings really questioned what anyone saw in him for Odo. Someone said (paraphrasing) "you realize his face is going to be covered in pale latex, right?" Only then did the exec get it and approve Rene.
I will always be grateful to Michelle Forbs for turning down DS9.
Major Kira is one of my favorite TV characters of all time.
Ensign Ro would have been great on DS9 though. she's similar to Kira.
I have a lifelong love of Star Trek. From watching the animated series and TOS reruns as a kid to watching TNG, DS9 and early VOY as a teen, and ENT in my 20s, loved it all. Have enjoyed coming back with PIC, LD, & even Disco, but I tell you all, DS9 was, is and likely will remain my favorite show. Great characters, plots, acting, world building, humor, drama, it had it all. The documentary was equally as epic.
Love this show. Good behind the scenes stuff. What I'd love to hear about next is how DS9 built it's amazing cast of supporting characters (Garak, Martok, Weyoun, Dukat, Rom, Nog, Winn, etc.). The supporting cast could have starred in their own show, that's how great they were as characters and actors.

I like the Bashir ethnicity thing, people are becoming so genetically mixed. I’m Irish, Hungarian and Mediterranean, my friends growing up were Italian/jewish, black/puerto rican, and a lot more mixes. We all were muts and all got along

I rather like not having some arbitrary "side" chosen by accident of birth.

7:30 the Quark/Kira advice to Odo may not have been pre-planned, but even the earliest marketing materials and Starlog interviews made it clear they were going to have a long-term "love-hate relationship" before the episodes started airing.
So....if they did get the big name actors, they do realize that half their budget would go to paying said actors.
Though imagine if they got JEJ to play Sisko's dad...
Imagine those dominion war scenes with 0 budget!

The cinematography of the enterprise western episode was gold
I especially liked how the sets were 'incomplete' with floating windows, signs that weren't attatched to anything, and other strange surreal elements that made it clear 'yes this is a wild west town but it's...not all there' which really made it hard to forget it was a simulation set up to 'punish' them.

Sisko is without a doubt my favorite captain. Thanks mostly to Avery Brooks' portrayal. Writing and storylines for him are also excellent.
He was absolutely perfect, and came across as very realistic, not boring and perfect like most Star Fleet characters. And he was a super-bad-ass, effectively the field commander of the Federation in the Dominion War, while not being nearly as irrationally trigger-happy like Janeway.
A local kids show did something similar as the set was an old general store so the set had jars and jars of old school candy. They eventually had to warn the cast and crew that all the candy had been sprayed with Raid to ward off insects. That fact eventually made it into the show as a fourth wall breaking moment.
the word brothel cam up right before quark is mentioned in this video which for me was perfect because it reminded me that in many ways, quark's bar is a brothel. what do you think most folks are doing in those holosweets?

Garek is basically a very insidious version of Mr Humphreys of the British comedy 'Are you Being Served' fame from the 1970s, a somewhat camp menswear department salesman, the humour is almost identical.

I'm glad Nana played Kira. I would've preferred Ro Laren to replace Chakotay in Voyager.
Ro Laren and Captain Janeway butting heads. That would've been great, except the writers had to be spot-on, or else it could have easily devolved into a cat-fight. And the writing of the first two or three seasons -- like all Trek shows in the 90s/00s -- was weak.

On one side we have Rodenberry with his space wagon, and on the other we have George Lucas with space western opera. Dang, the western genre truly extended it's influence over decades to pass. I can imagine Gene and George watching the old tv western shows and movies while dreaming of their own stories.
When they were growing up, Westerns were the biggest genre on TV by a huge margin.

@@ShiningT1g3R - the fundamental element of an American Western story (when its done right) is that its a morality tale. -- A protagonist (or small group of protagonists) is presented with a problem (usually "the bad guys"), and must choose how to react to that problem, without the ability to just call for the Cavalry/police. Will the protagonist "fight or flee"?, stand up for the little people or join the bad guys? Will he overcome his fear and act, or submit to his fear and run away? Based on his choice, his character is revealed, and hopefully, a greater truth about the human condition is revealed.
Its this element of the Western - the absence of order thus requiring the lone protagonist to choose to act (or not act) -- which is key. And this translates very well to Star Trek TOS & TNG -- which in both cases the ship is the only "law and order" around.
Gene Roddenberry even directed and wrote scripts for a few
@@michaelmckinnon1591 Roddenberry wrote *lots* of scripts for westerns. And, re-used names like "Robert April" (first used on "Have Gun, Will Travel"). BTW, "The Rifleman" analogy was about a widowed guy and his relationship to his son, not so much a small town on a frontier.
According to Michael Dorn, some of the best scripts meant for The Next Generation was given to Deep Space Nine to help boost the new (at the time) TV show.
I really liked that they didn't explicitly state Bashir's ethnicity as well. I remember watching an Alexander Sidig interview explaining how it was something that he really liked too. The idea that when you see him, he's obviously not a white Englishman. Though he has an easily identified English accent. The name doesn't narrow it down either. It's so indescript as to be meaningless. Which fits extremely well with the positive future envisioned in Star Trek.
Bashir is a fairly common Arab surname. The implication is that he was a descendent of a wealthy Arab family from a former British colony, which pretty much tracks exactly with Siddig’s actual heritage.
@@davidrobertson2826 When I watched DS9 for the first time I had no idea that Siddig was Sudanese. Or that Bashir was actually a common specifically arab surname. All I knew was that he was not white. Not black. With a very English accent. And no references at all to where he grew up. His dad was portrayed as a white guy from like London or something and his mom was brown.
Siddig's face doesn't scream any particular ethnic group to me. Which I like.
I noticed a while ago that certain wall panels in the DS9 Medical Bay were simply plastic pallets (with 9 feet) simply glued to the walls standing on end.
It's odd how much this is bringing back about my production reads on this show. One ep about a Cardassian-era lockdown on the station had many subplots. One subplot was about Quark and Odo trapped in Odo's office coping with each other's company. This lead to the two actors vying for a similar story being the focus of an episode.
I believe that's what lead to that survival ep with the two of them wearing coats and stranded on that planet together.
Cast outstanding. When ever I talk to somebody who has not seen the show, I tell them about Garak. The character spices up every episode he is in. A true spy but yet helpful and insightful.
Star Trek is definitely a western in space. The end fight in Generations was a good example.

Great list, but how anyone could ever forget the scene between Quark and Odo where they discuss Kira, and Quark turns to leave and Odo asks him to wait, only for Quark to tell him to "make up his mind", is beyond me. It is the single greatest moment between the two, even better the last scene they share. It just says everything about their friendship.

DS9 was lighting in a bottle. Still my favorite Star Trek, though there is no competition whatsoever, nowadays... Unless The Expanse is a super duper prequel to it all.

Not the case with Picard or Discovery.
Without the threat of the Dominion, the wormhole would have stayed underwhelming like it was in the first two seasons where aliens weren't much different to the ones in the Alpha Quadrant (and the less said about the "Move Along Home" episode the better). Granted the Dominion wasn't as alien and frightening like the Borg, they at least were a formidable threat. I just wish they had made first contact with the Gamma Quadrant a more special thing with bizarre life forms utterly different than what they were used to. Of course Voyager failed spectacularly in this too so DS9 is hardly to blame.

As I recall there is an in universe explanation as to why all species look essentially identical throughout our galaxy. That being that an ancient race spread their genes across the universe and on each planet those genes evolved slightly differently.

I missed out on DS9 when it originally aired. I've only just begun watching the DVD seasons during Covid lockdown. It's admittedly different than TNG, which I also missed out on, and only watched in reruns.
My brother worked on the show and I got to watch the last episode being filmed. I also toured the whole set, sat in the Captains chair and I met Louise Fletcher (Guy win) she was such a nice lady she was crying while saying goodbye to the staff! RIP Louise Fletcher!
The thing I find with Star Trek, not just this generation but as a whole, is they tend to "keep it in the family"... for better or for worse.
But it would have been cool if James Earl Jones played an Admiral overseeing matters in the DeMilitarized Zone (DMZ), works his ass off trying to save what he sees at the DMZ's colonists annihilation only to have to be recalled because the rest of the Admiralty can not see it ending any other way. Which I feel would have been more tragic that someone was really trying to save the DMZ but ultimately was denied. Also, if you only hear his voice, Then it is Darth Vader. But if you see him on screen, then it is Thulsa Doom.
Robert Patrick playing a recurring role as a starship captain of a vessel assigned to a patrol route that brings his ship back to DS9 on a regular basis, which becomes more important as the Dominion war heats up. His ship would be something middle tier like an Ambassador class, which you would think would still be in service by this point in time. Actually, that I think about it, maybe he could play an Andorian if he was okay with that. He just has that face even when no being type-cast as the T-1000. It would not prevent Shran, but would make Shran a bit less of an "OMG-THEM! Character".

I’ve always guessed that Bashir’s family was originally from Pakistan. His parents look like they could be from the Indian Subcontinent and yet they have an Arabic family name. Usually Arabic or Muslim names in South Asia equals Pakistani or Bangladeshi. As far as their accent, the parents might have moved to the UK when they were young and he was born and raised there. At least that’s in my head canon.

Chief odo or sheriff odo was not a phasers first type. He never used a phaser till he killed the changeling. Quark was not the only one to help odo with his relationship with kira. Nick Fontaine from the holodeck got them together.
He didnt even use a phaser to kill the changeling . He pushed it against an overhesting warp core

DS9 for me became the best ST series. I liked all ST (Except Entrprise) and I have them all on my HDD (Except Enterprise).... DS9 - great charactors, great acting, great story lines, awesome enemies Jem'Hadar, Vorter, Jeffery Combs was just great, so smarmy and sucked up to the Dominion but was cutting and cold to all others....
Bruh Enterprise is like, the third best Star Trek series. Which really ain't nothing lol. It's definitely up there, at the very least in specific episodes
I believe the classic long-running western TV series Bonanza was an influence behind DS9. The series followed widower Ben Cartwright living on a ranch with his 3 sons. In DS9, Ben Sisko also a widower lives on DS9 with son Jake.

Despite some disagreements from other fans, for me my favorite character in DS9 (My favorite Star Trek show of all time) must be Miles Edward O'Brian. Oh, he might not have the LARGEST role on the station but he is the everyman that most people like, he has a family and the friendship with a certain enhanced doctor is legendary. Also he was the first character already developed into an established character in TNG, which I am sure helped (and was probably planned to) make a bridge for fans of that show. Oh well... ;-)

Im glad they didn´t drop the Dominion war storyline. So far this has been my favourite plot arc of any Star Trek incarnation.
Best Thing DS9 did was in the first Episode Sisko drawing a distinctive Line between him and Picard. This set the scene for further independent development.

3:30 Well then, thank God that Rick Berman didn't stay in charge! The overarching story arcs was what made DS9 the best Trek show by miles (along with the phenomenal characters)! Shame he went to Voyager, as that show really needed to be less episodic and more major story arc (the original plan of Year of Hell being a season-long story is probably the best example of the major missed opportunity in not having continuing stories).
