PLEASE READ - CORRECTIONS: Yes! I am a human who makes mistakes, but I'd like to pin this comment to address them real quick. Thank you to everyone who respectfully corrected my mistakes in the comments - I appreciate your attention to detail and appreciate the input. I'm not one to die on the hill of being objectively incorrect so, here are some corrections that need to be made to my video: 1. When talking about the Pokewalker, I mentioned that it was an additional product at an additional price - little did I know that the Pokewalker was included with a purchase of the games back then. I only ever played used copies, so I had no idea, but I went ahead and cut that portion of the video out. I still won't be talking about the Pokewalker though, as it doesn't pertain directly to the region of Johto. 2. Tyrogue can also be hatched from the odd egg in Pokemon Crystal, but I forgot to add Tyrogue to the list. And this is why relying on my memory is dangerous sometimes. 3. The Kimono Girl Zuki is found in Violet city after RECEIVING the egg from Prof. Elm's assistant, not giving it to him. Lol whoops. 4. Actually, it turns out that you CAN catch Qwilfish in Gen 4 with the good rod on Route 32. There's only a 2% chance to catch it, which is why I likely didn't realize this, but yeah! Y'all go catch you one, because that's what I'm gonna do. If you've made it this far into this pinned comment, THANK YOU FOR READING. I appreciate it. I'm only one person and I don't have an editor or a team of people to check my work for accuracy, and I'm not putting my scripts on the internet for someone else to review, as I'd like to protect my intellectual property. Even when I try my absolute best, I still make mistakes, and when I do, I'm happy to own up to them and make corrections where I can. Thank you to everyone who was respectful. I appreciate all of you. 🥰
Rumor says that Lance's "cheat" Dragonites are a result of him spending time in the lake of rage when that mysterious transmission was going around, and I think it's a cool idea, but this is an inference more than confirmed, I think
Oh fun fact about Karen that people never seem to mention. She uses her favourite pokemon, and it's hinted that she lived in Celadon city. Her team can all be found in the routes surrounding Celadon City and night time! Hiundour, Murkrow, Gastly/Haunter, and Oddish fit this bill. The only exception is Umbreon, but Eevee is acquired at the Celadon game corner and evolves at night time. She's more of a 'Celadon City at night's specialist than a dark specialist. Since realising this I love her team, the flavour is incredible even if the team itself is lacklustre.
Well that's cool! I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing the cool information, I really love Karen, she's the coolest E4 member in Johto, for sure. And I'm always happy to learn something new. 😊
about lance's dragonites, you can get underleveld pideottos in Veridian Forest in yellow and HGSS, also, remember that team rocket was experimentin on soundwaves that forced evolutions, so maybe his pokemon got caught too
I always assumed the changes to the Ecruteak towers was because “Tin Tower” sounds an awful lot like “Twin Tower,” and having one tower burn down while the other unintentionally evokes 9/11 would be upsetting.
Yeah, I think you're probably right about that. I hadn't considered that until after I wrote the script, but I'll likely address that in an upcoming video.
I also agree (as a fan of the Misdreavus line) that they should've been found in the Burned Tower... Imagine how richer the lore would've been. The late souls of the people that suffered tragic deaths in the fire being brought back like the three unnamed pokemon, now filling the roles of the messengers of death (with them being based off of banshees and all that) wanting nobody else to suffer like they did...
Johto's exploration incentives with the day night system were always my favorite. Picking a new team for each playthrough made the whole experience feel fresh with that heavy burst of nostalgia
In a world made if short videos, there's you. Where UA-cam is opposing long videos in favour of silly shorts, there's you. Most video about pokémon stop after 5 minutes and most informations are reduced to "did you know that" followed by stuff we all actually know since we were kids. And then there's you. A creative who takes her time to fully explore the topic, do research about it and share a detailed and studied opinion. UA-cam think this is "boring content", but actually it's the best. I could listen at these videos for hours. They're so comfy and truly a love letter to the series we all love. Thank you for that. I hope you continue with this project. 😊
@@saffroncitytv It is something that deserves the frustration considering HGSS were a... Golden... Opportunity to rectify it but they just went "eh" lol.
The depth of your analysis is incredible. Breaking down the gym leader teams is really amazing. So many thing I had never reflected on when it comes to these games.
Thanks, those videos actually inspired me through nostalgia trip to start playing my old games again. Started week ago with Blue and really enjoying it. Trying to make my team 'blue themed' as i understand it, so def will be using Blastoise and Nidoqueen.
That is such a cool concept for a play through! Blue Pokemon? That's an awesome idea, keep me posted on how the play through goes! I'm curious now. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 😊
Another exploratory reward in Goldenrod in the female Machop you can get in a NPC trade. Many a player has resorted to this to topple the dreaded Miltank that Whitney uses.
@@kylespevak6781 Stomp causing flinch, and Rollout gaining power every consecutive turn. I’ve developed the strategy of lowering Miltank’s accuracy so Rollout can’t reach the point it’s fatal.
I gotta agree, Whitney was a beast back in the day, and still is under certain circumstances for sure, but you're right, the Machop trade really does help, especially since it's female, so Miltank can't get an Attract off.
@@saffroncitytvIt stands up long run too, being effective against Jasmine and Pryce, the extra exp from being a traded Pokémon not hurting either especially for a region known for a poor grinding curve. Have a friend you can trade with to evolve it into Machamp, even better.
I think there are not enough words to say how thankful we’re to have these kind of video analysis. The amount of time and effort you’re putting to make this is noticeable in every second of the video. You’re amazing 🙌✨
Aww! Thank you so much! That's very kind of you 😊 I'm glad I could provide some quality entertainment with my reviews. I really do work hard on them, so that's very nice to hear. 😊
I definitely worked hard on it for sure! But since I didn't have to work extra hours last week, I actually had the time to focus on it and put more time into it to get it out to y'all sooner than later. Thank you for recognizing the hard work 😊 I appreciate ya! Oh, and Hoenn is one of my favorite regions, so I'm excited for it, too!
Probably the games that got me most into the series when I was younger and I still visit to this day tbh, absolutely amazing vibe in johto and just love exploring the region 😊
YAY! I'm so excited to get part 2 of this, I've been looking forward to it since I found the first one ❤ I love your videos so far, this deserves way more views.
1:00:24 honestly the firebreather and juggler classes look to me like a possible attempt to reference Kabuki theatre in a way that is digestible to Western audiences. If so, that would hugely support the historical themes of Johto
These two videos were so nice to watch. I now want to go and play Jhoto again. I think Hoeen will always be my favourite but Jhoto always feels like a warm hug home. I 100% agree with the Jhoto pokemon diveristy. I always find myself trading in when I replay
This was such a thoughtful, intelligent analysis of one of my favorite regions. This is only the second region review and I think this is my new favorite series. I hope you get to 5k subs soon! You deserve way more! Thanks for the great content. Can’t wait for the next one
I love the Johto region and I love these videos. Thank you so much for doing these! Blue version was my first Pokemon game, but the Johto games will always hold a special place on my heart.
Well thank you for always tuning in! I appreciate the support and the very kind words. I will always love Johto, too. It may not be perfect, but it's pretty freaking close. 😊
I feel like it makes more sense to base Pokémon diversity off of Pokémon present in the region rather than the dex, especially since recent generations don't tend to add many Pokémon. It also just feels like the generation-based approach ranks the generation rather than the region. People in the region themselves are not going to regard Pichu as a Johto 'mon and Pikachu as a Kanto 'mon.
I can see where you're coming from, and you've made a fair critique. But in my defense, I did consider the Pokemon in the region itself, as well as the generation, and unfortunately, I came to the conclusion that where there is a little diversity in Johto, there's also a ton of repeat Kanto Pokemon. And yes, most newer regions don't add a whole bunch of new Pokemon, but I don't base the score on how many new Pokemon were added, rather how available they are. I just think there was a better way of making them available by utilizing the new mechanics, rather than sequestering so many lines to the post-game. But that's just my personal take. Thank you for sharing your perspective, I appreciate your input. 😊
Well thank you so much! I'm happy to see them doing well too! I'm glad I shifted my content, as I'm way less stressed out, and enjoying the video-making process more now. Thanks for all your support! 😊
@@saffroncitytv My first time playing Ruby, I got to Victory Road, saw Wally's Gardevoir... and restarted the game to get one for myself. And even as hard as it is to get Milotic.... it's like a competitively viable pokemon. Like it's worth the difficulty. Granted, it IS too difficult, but it doesn't feel like it wasn't worth the effort.
This is Excellence!!! You are killin it, Queen. Your first video inspired me to start up Crystal again and I'm having a blast. Johto is such a grounding, comforting place to return to, time and time again. Especially in this busy world!
Well thank you so much! 😊 Replaying Crystal for this video was such a nice experience. I love the Gen 2 games to this day, and I always find myself returning to Johto every so often.
What a fantastic video series this is. I subscribed. What I think these videos show really well is how much more Pokemon games have to offer than just the game play, which is something the ROM hack community should take more notes from. It is (relatively) easy to crank up enemy teams, improve learn sets, and diversify encounter tables, but giving a region a consistent theme and culture with diverse natural habitats requires far more attention to detail. That is something even the most impressive ROM hacks haven't been able to match IMO. These games are more convenient, sure, but the immersion aspect of the official games---even with their typically poor game play options---is hard to match. I never knew about Kanto's technological theme or Jotho's traditional culture before these videos but it makes so much sense and really improves the games retroactively. Looking forward to checking out the Hoenn videos after this. Cheers!
Well thank you so much for taking the time to leave me such a nice comment about my videos! I agree - I think that Pokemon games have a lot of subtle flavor that people tend to miss - I mean, I didn't recognize Kanto's technological theme either until I really looked into it. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video, and I hope you like the Hoenn review as well! 😊
I know right?? I feel like since I made the shift in content, the effort has really been paying off! And I'm so glad people are enjoying the Region Reviews. I'm really enjoying making them. Anyway, thank you so much for the support, it means a lot. 😊
Having just watched all these 3 Region Review videos across these days, I wanna comment how great and informative they are, not only you speak so graciously for each category but everything is so detailed and yet it never got boring. I'm not a fan of Kanto games and I've barely played a Johto game (I'm currently planning to play one with a party of Typhlosion, Fearow, Vileplume, Lapras, Sudowoodo and Espeon btw) and yet after watching these videos made me appreciate them in a way, I can't wait to see when you tackle my favorite region that is Unova in the future, for now I subbed and I can't motivate you enough to continue, hope the best for you!
Well thank you very much for the affirmation and the kind words! 😊 I'm really happy with the way they've turned out. I'm also really excited for Unova! It's the region I've spent the least amount of time in, so I'm really looking forward to playing through the Gen 5 games again and creating the review will likely be a nice learning experience 😊
I like the theory that Dratini and it's line is technically Johto pokemon. Because the only place you can catch one in Kanto is an artificial nature preserve, whereas they can be found in the wild in Johto.
While I think Gym Leaders not using Johto Pokémon is a valid critique to a point, I think something many people often miss is that gen 2 wasn’t created as their own games like most of the series have been. Gen 2 were a sequel to RBY, which is why so many gym leaders have Kanto mons. Chuck and Bugsy both use Kanto Pokémon that were overlooked in RBY like Scyther and Poliwrath, neither of whom were on any major trainer’s teams in gen 1. Plus, I honestly feel Scyther fits Bugsy’s design way more than Heracross. No excuse for Falkner tho.
this! also scyther evolves into a johto mon, so I think it’s a good choice for bugsy. scizor would’ve been too op for the second gym also magnemite is the only gen 1 pokémon that had a type change in the shift to gen 2, so I think it makes sense that Jasmine shows it off.
Pokemon Crystal was my first experience with the series, and I was absolutely hooked. I don't think it's my favorite region, but it holds a special place in my heart. I think the criticisms are more than fair; it's possible you're even being too nice. I look forward to your review of gens 5 and 7. Cheers!
Pokemon Crystal is definitely a good one to start with! I started with Silver, but always liked Crystal more. Anyway, I'm also excited to cover Unova and the later Regions. But especially Unova, since that's the region I've spent the least amount of time in, so it'll be a review and a learning experience at the same time. 😊
Thing that always made me wonder about Bugsy is why does he use Metapod and Kakuna? All they do is harden. Great review. Johto has always been my favorite region.
I think I heard somewhere that he's studying Pokemon evolution and in particular whether anything happens if Metapod/Kakuna are made stronger without evolving.
Same!!! I started with Pokemon Silver, but Pokemon Sapphire will always be a fave since it was the first game I ever actually owned. I, too, love Hoenn.
Now I remember why your voice hit me the way it does: You remind me A LOT of Julianne Moore as Poppy in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The same campy, friendly tone of someone eager to teach people something fun in that "easy listen" way to make sure we don't miss a detail. Overall, fantastic video, can't wait to see whats next, especialy since gen III was my actual entry into this franchise ^^
I always viewed Johto from a battling and Pokémon perspective and didn’t really like how it played based on the available Pokémon and gym leaders. But your section another lore and another video about the real life connections between Johto and the Kansai region in Japan rekindled some love. I’m going to do a new run of HG soon!
Just learned about your videos, and I’m loving them so far! My only two cents so far is that Jasmine having Magnemite feeds into the theme of introducing players to new mechanics, since they received the new Steel-type in Gen 2 (introduced with the Dark-type). I believe there’s even a note in her history that shr was a Rock specialist who pivoted to the Steel type once it was declared a standalone type. It doesn’t excuse her having *two*, but it’s a fun little tidbit.
About the Pokéwalker: I'm totally fine with you not including it. I don't think I ever caught a Pokémon that was not available in Johto anyway. But it was originally included with the games, not as an additional, extra-cost accessory. Also, as a fun side note, I'm from a pretty rural area, and the closest Walmart to my hometown had a giant bin thing full of HGSS games about 2 years after the games came out for like $20. And I was a broke college student who already had the games (I definitely didnt use my scholarship money to buy them. I would *never*.), so I didn't buy any. If I had spent $400-500, or if I'd had enough to buy the whole bin... It's my Uncle Rico moment. Also, thanks for the nostalgia, as I pretend I'm not old.
Thanks for pointing out the issue with the statement about the Pokewalker. Honestly, I legit didn't know that it came with the games. I only ever owned a used copy of Soul Silver, and had to buy my Pokewalker separate. So, my memory didn't serve me well here. 😅 I ended up cutting out the statement about it being a separate product at a separate price to save others from any confusion, and to eliminate the factual error. Thank you for respectfully pointing that out, as I want to be as accurate as possible. 😊 Anyway, that's SO LUCKY that you found all of those! I'm so jealous! I paid like $60 for my used copy, and that was back in THE DAY. (Psst, don't tell anyone, but I also like to pretend like I'm young and spry, but ya girl getting dusty bones over here)
No problem. I think it's neat that you changed it, and thanks for the commitment to being accurate. Although, I feel a little guilty, if I'm real tbh about it. Yeah, it's kind of crazy how expensive used Pokémon games have gotten, so I guess I'm fortunate that I never gave away any of the games I got, so I still have all of my old ones. It's also crazy to think that that particular Walmart had so many HGSS games and so little demand that they went on clearance. There were probably 200 of them in that bin. And now sealed copies go for over $1000 if they're in good condition. (Sometimes, it's easier to pretend than others. I think the only good part about getting older is being able to dismissively say, "Just wait till you get my age." I don't think I'm doing it right, though, because I almost exclusively say it to people older than me. It doesn't seem to annoy them as much as I'd like it to)
The "Exploratory Incentives" is the main reason these are my favorite Pokemon games, so much to do! Johto's culture, towns, aesthetic and music are perfection and it all adds to the experience of exploring Johto too! The biggest complain I always hear is Johto's Pokemon diversity, which includes Pokemon used by trainers. You bring up a lot of good points I wanted to comment: - I am completely ok with Bruno staying in the Elite Four and having a very Kanto promiment team! But definitely Chuck needed Johto representation. - Jasmine shouldn't use 2 Magnemite but instead 1 Magneton! Since that line received the new Steel type, I think back in Gen 2 it was a perfect fit! (Side note but has someone noticed Johto's Gyms don't repeat any types from Kanto!) - I have always heard and believed myself the complaint that Johto Pokemon are not available in Johto. But you have brought up a fantastic point that I don't know if anyone has considered before: the "new Johto Pokemon" are hidden behind the new mechanics! Obviously this doesn't defeat the fact that the grass routes are filled with Pidgey and Rattata, like clearly they could've achieved better diversity even if they had to use different Kanto Pokemon to achieve that (like the main problem is that you see the same Pokemon in every route!). Now I really want to go deep in analyzing the availability of Johto Pokemon before the postgame in Gen 2 and 4, because I think everyone hasn't realized there aren't that many Pokemon unavailable before Kanto, but instead the new Johto Pokemon are very rare to find (again, the diversity definitely ain't good, but I got really interested in the actual data!).
Exploratory Incentives is one of my favorite categories to make! I love talking about all the cool amenities the Region has to offer. And you made some good points in this comment! Thank you for sharing your perspective. 😊
@@saffroncitytv and to answer your request for viewer input: agreed the gym leaders are a let down. While not a factor in your ratings, I have always felt Johto (especially Gen 2) lacked sufficient challenge and “altitude” of battles. Once you beat Red, you have little motivation to keep training Pokémon. Gen 4 is a bit better since phone friends do get stronger, but that cap is low. And the E4 becomes much much more interesting and better. But that’s it. It’s a pain tracking down all 16 gym leaders for rematches. I’m curious if you’ll mention the stadiums in Gen 5, since they are slightly varied and can be redone every day, the trainers getting stronger each time you beat them (to a point of course).
I love your thorough and insightful analysis of all of the old Pokemon games! I'm wondering if you've ever considered adding the starter Pokemon as a category to rate as they can sometimes add to the overall lore of the region, and can certainly affect a player's experience with their playthrough. Keep up the great work!
I haven't considered discussing the starters before, but I'll look into it, and if it adds to the lore of the region itself, then it may be worth incorporating into the review. 😊 Thank you for the suggestion!
I don't know how you do it, i dont know why you dont have more subscribers, and i dont know why exactly everything works so well, but oh my, Arceus, your videos are PHENOMENAL. I think you have a great cadence for voice-over and a very impressive sense of pacing and naturalness in your presentations of these topics. I'm serious, I think you are really REALLY good at this, and I think you could go really far if you keep it up. As someone who is both a lover of pokemon and aspires to learn how to make videos myself, i encourage you to KEEP UP THE INCREDIBLY GOOD WORK, SABRINA! 😊😊😊
Well thank you very much! That's very generous and kind of you to say. 😊 I really do try very hard on my videos, and it makes me happy to see that someone recognizes the effort. So thank you again, I really appreciate that. 😊
@saffroncitytv also if you wouldn't mind, i would love to ask you for a few tips on how you learned to make vids like these. It doesnt seem like you've been doing it for very long, at least not on this channel, but the quality implies that you've had a lot of practice. I have lots of ideas for videos and whatnot id like to make, but just aren't sure how to get it all started 🥲
Sure! First things first, don't hesitate to start. If you want to get the ball rolling, don't wait until you have the best equipment or anything. If you have a decent computer, I'd suggest starting out with the free version of DaVinci Resolve - it's what I use, but I do use the paid version. However, you can do a lot with this editing software and it's fairly easy to pick up and learn. As far as the quality of my editing is concerned, it's really just a matter of attention to detail and not getting lazy on the little things like transitions. Honestly, I have only been editing my videos for roughly a year, if not less than that, and if I can do it, you can too. If you're planning on having your face in the videos, you can likely get by when a newer generation smart phone, honestly. I use a camera, but I had it way before starting YT. A lot of creators just use their phone, and with the right lighting, it can look really nice. A ring light, or just a simple stand light will help a lot with that, as well as an accent light for your interesting background. GIMP is also free and easy to use, and you'll need some sort of image editing software for your thumbnails - personally, I just use GIMP. As far as content is concerned, just make sure that you've got ideas that others might be interested in, and focus on quality - not quantity. And don't enforce an upload schedule on yourself unless you can handle it. The region reviews that I make have taken over a month to put together, and the Johto Region Review took almost 2 and a half months, so, it's highly time consuming. But not difficult to learn. 😊 You got this!
Love the vids! I would say, though, that Qwilfish is probably a pretty common pokemon that a lot of players were able to catch early in their game. I believe you run into Fisher Ralph (?) early enough in the game to where your phone isn't even full of numbers yet (if you register all trainers you come across), and most people will just battle every trainer they can and accept all phone numbers until their phone is full, so I remember getting the call from Ralph pretty quickly about the Qwilfish and getting one with an old rod, which I then used in my playthrough as a pretty good poison type. The game really pushes the phone feature onto to you in the beginning, so having Qwilfish be locked until the super rod for players that didn't bother to take advantage of the new features seems kind of fair to me. As for the other swarm pokemon, I'd have to see if the trainers give any sort of clue that they will call about swarms, in order to inspire you to delete numbers for theirs. If they do then I can't be mad, but if they don't, then I'd say that's a bit unfair.
That's a fair point. 😊 Honestly, I always avoided giving the trainers my number, because I didn't want them calling me all the time, but now I've got FOMO and need to replay Crystal the right way 🤣. Anyway, Thank you for sharing your perspective, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 😊
Pokemon diversity (and level curve) and such huge detractors of these games for me. I’d probably hold them much higher if they fixed those 👀 Larvitar being post Kanto outside the Safari Zone..like I can kinda understand it, but the game also has more available Dratini..a pokemon of the same tier as Larvitar. With the way levels are, you likely won’t even have a Tyranitar by the time you reach the E4 the first time.
I agree, I think the diversity and the Gym Leader's teams definitely deserve some improvement. And I didn't mention the level curve, because I didn't think it was connected to the region itself, but now that I think about it, you spend a ton of time grinding in these games, which probably does impact the way folks feel about the region.
@saffroncitytv You’re right, and definitely fair to not factor it into the region itself. I’m probably used to those being my main drawbacks with it that I instinctively lump them together. Aside from that, it was a great video, and learned some region and lore bits I might’ve missed before or forgotten. I’m looking forward to any others you decide to do.
Well I'm certainly glad that you brought up your point, because I, too, also really hate grinding so much, and my rose-tinted glasses that I see Johto through often make me forget that the level curve is so aggressive. So, thanks for sharing your perspective, it's always welcome. I'm really looking forward to Hoenn! It's also a big fave!
JOHTO was my favorite region, not because it was the best (because it is not) but I received Pokémon Red for Christmas 1998 when I was 6 years old and completely not capable of beating the game without the help of the other kids at recess. It would not be until the Gen II games came out that I could figure the game out on my own, and that made is so much of a part of my childhood. Loved the game, miss the day/ night cycle and give the players a cell phone again!!! - thanks for the great video and I am looking forward to Gen III!
Haha, at least you were able to ask for help on the playground! I only watched in despair and jealousy because I didn't actually own my first Pokemon game until the GBA and Sapphire. But I did have a neighbor that owned Pokemon Silver, and it was the first Pokemon game I ever played, and I always kept returning to the series time and time again. Johto is definitely one of my faves, I'm glad you enjoyed the review. Hoenn has a special place in my heart as well, so I'm really looking forward to the review! 😊
Hehe 😅 here I was thinking that my memory was reliable. Thanks for pointing that out! I'll pin a comment to let folks know about the mistake. Thanks for being respectful! 😊
@@saffroncitytv no problem. Pokemon Crystal was my first ever videogame that was mine (not a hand-me-down) back in 2001 and the series is incredibly important to me, so thank you for doing the games justice! Only recently discovered your channel and your content rocks!
On the subject of the gym leaders' pokemon, anyone who wants to play Gen 2 should consider the Crystal Legacy rom hack. it's not a difficulty hack, it just focusses on making gen 2 as good as it can be, and it overhauls the gym leaders' pokemon so well! Falkner uses Noctowl, Bugsy uses Ledian, Whitney uses Teddiursa, Morty uses both Misdreavus and Stantler. It's really cool to see gen 2's pokemon get more of a spotlight, and only highlights how baffling it was that the actual games were so shy to use them!
The level curve and the Pokemon diversity in the Johto portion of the Crystal Legacy hack is pristine. * Trainers have interesting teams * The levels scale up in such a smooth way * Pokemon have much more useful learnsets and coverage options * There are so many useful Pokemon encounters that you can find It still feels unfinished and the Kanto region is rough (encountering level 2 Diglets after you obtain 13 badges...) but it's a tremendous improvement to the base game. I don't think I could ever play normal Crystal again.
Fantastic video!! This was so well done and I loved how you finished the region review. I can't wait for more reviews, Sinnoh being my personal favorite. I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and I personally love how you format your content. Terrific job Sabrina, you did a wonderful job, as always.
Well thank you very much! That's very generous and kind of you to say! I'm also really looking forward to Sinnoh. I actually haven't played DP or Platinum; I've only played Brilliant Diamond, so I'm really excited to play through Platinum for that review. Sinnoh is PACKED with content, too, so it should be a pretty hefty one as well. Anyway, ramblings aside, I really appreciate the support and affirmation, thank you so much. 😊
@@saffroncitytv Absolutely no problem Sabrina. Your videos bring me such joy, and I can't express enough how happy I am when I see that you've uploaded. So thank you, for being a ray of sunshine that brightens my day. 😄
You got this out so quickly! Another incredible video! Johto is my favorite region, and GSC and HGSS are among my favorite games, so it was a real treat for me 😊 I think your analysis really did the games and region justice, and I never felt myself disagreeing even over its flaws! Thank you for all the work you put into your videos 👏
Well thank you very much, I really appreciate the kind words. 😊 Johto has always been a favorite region of mine, and even though it isn't without its flaws, I still love it so much. Thanks again for the affirmation! 😊
This Videos are really good and very well researched! It's relaxing to listen to your voice and very nostalgic to go through the region in such details! If you don't mind, I gonna point out a few things, I noticed during the video like I did last time! Please keep in mind, this is not for nitpicking, just small details that can easily be missed or get lost in such a huge scale of video! I still really enjoyed it and just like to point out smaller details lmao Looking forward for more Region Reviews!
Well thank you! I appreciate that! I do all of the research myself, so sometimes things get missed in the process, though I do my best to be as thorough as possible. Anyway, I went ahead and made a pinned comment addressing the mistakes you pointed out. Thank you for being very kind and respectful in your corrections. And I'm really glad you enjoyed the video! I'm also looking forward to Hoenn, it's one of my absolute favorites!
That was a great review, I enjoyed your Kanto one too and I'm intrigued on how you're going to redo it with all the things you learned after making it. I agree that Johto definitely excels in lore, culture, music, and all that. And when you started talking about the Pokemon diversity, I'm thinking "oof this is going to be brutal" because yeah, Quilfish, Slugma, Houndour, etc being found in Kanto...why? That always bothered me. Anyway, great review, excited to see your review of Hoenn! Are you going to do any of the spinoff regions like the Orre Region (Pokemon Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness)?
Well I'm really glad you enjoyed the review. Johto isn't perfect, even though nostalgia likes to think it is. I personally love Johto a lot, but it certainly isn't without its flaws. I just think the good outweighs the bad 🤪 Anyway, I hope you enjoy Hoenn when I get there, it's also a favorite of mine!
@@saffroncitytv Oh yeah I adore Johto and am excited for Hoenn, I probably replayed through Hoenn more than any other region, and it’s not because it’s my favorite, but it was just the easiest or most accessible to play over and over, and probably being the “newest” at the time helped with that. But I have a lot of nostalgia for Hoenn and has a lot of neat and new things going for it, so my prediction is you’ll rate Hoenn pretty highly in an objective opinion. But we’ll see!
I think one of my favorite features for a heart, gold and soul silver is the auto run button. My God is that a lifesaver we are trying to play it one-handed
I think the fact that firebreather walt and juggler Ian are found outside national park adds a bit of environmental storytelling, I imagine that they’re there to put on a show for people going in and out of the park and are just trying to make a living as entertainers 😭 and I love that the national park is full of school kids and other young trainer classes, I imagine that they’re just visiting the park after school, since the Trainer’s school in Violet city is right next to it. and finally I love that there are so many pokemaniacs around mahogany and the lake of rage, like OF COURSE those are the kinds of trainers that’d be the most interested in seeing the red Gyarados. just so much good stuff all around
you can get qwilfish early in gsc via swarm encounters, and you can catch it midgame with a good rod in hgss, it’s just a 2% encounter in route 32. it’s one of my faves so I always go for it 😭 and while I agree that locking away “middling” stat Johto pokémon in Kanto is wack, I think the intent was to have some more exploratory incentives for completing the post game, and to show the change in pokémon diversity in kanto in the 3 years since the events of gen 1 (but that might be a reach tbh) but yeah I think it’s crazy that route 42 has no new Johto grass encounters 😭 anyways great video as always!! can’t wait for the next video! :D
Oh dang! You're so right! I did not know this! And I researched the availability of Qwilfish a lot, too! I'm gonna have to add this to my pinned comment with corrections. Thank you for pointing that out! Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing the facts!
Cool review, completly agree with your view on Johto :) While the gymleaders representation of Johto-pokemon is quite lackluster, I still found them challenging and enjoyed battling them. Well, most. Whitney was a nightmare. Other than that, Johto is just awesome. My absolute favorite and most nostalgic region. If you're also gonna make reviews of the other regions, it would be cool to see a list by the end of the videos with the score each region so far has acquired, so they're easy to compare along the way. Just a thought. :D Great work, and getting close to 5K!
Exactly what I needed today! Been looking forward to Johto since its one of my favorite regions. I really feel like the region succeeds at telling its story and history in such a unique way compared to other regions. Really if they just fixed the lack of Johto mons in early and mid game areas and reworked the gym leaders it'd be perfect in my eyes!
I couldn't agree more. 😊 The gym leader's teams would also need an overhaul, but those two little things would be so easy to fix. Maybe this is selfish, but I hope that Johto gets a third remake 🤣
I thought about it, but I just knew it would take forever to get it out to y'all. And honestly, I really do care about getting content out, because I, for one, spend way too much time scrolling. It's nice to have something fun and informative to listen to, so I try to get these videos done so y'all ain't scrolling all day like I am.
I know I'm late to the party here, you've already made your fixing Johto video. But I have an idea on how I'd fix the gym leaders regarding Faulkner and Morty. I'd swap their places. It never made sense for a 4th gym leader to be ghost when only 2 evolutionary lines exist, but making him the first is a great way to teach the player about type immunities, then move Faulker to the 4th gym, there are a lot of bird Pokemon introduced in gen 2 which can be used, Skarmory, Noctowl, Murkrow etc. On top of that, you can find ghastly in the Bellsprout tower so that fits Morty's vibe and having a flying type leader by tall towers, a place that would make sense for bird Pokemon to nest makes so much sense to me!
Very nice part 2, Sabrina! Your video makes me remember why I love Johto as region, but also you reminds me how frustrating availability of many Gen 2 Mons. And I don't know why most of it doesn't get fixed. Really reminds me how frustrating when I learned that you can't catch Houndour until you reach Kanto. It feels like somehow lots of Johto pokemon population committing mass emigration to Kanto in GSC/HGSS 😂
I know right? Johto certainly isn't without it's flaws, and I'd really like to see more Johto Pokemon in the Johto-based games, but I still love the fact that the Johto Region itself feels like a warm hug on a cold day. 😊
@@saffroncitytv Yeah. Johto is still my 2nd favorite after Sinnoh despite of some silly flaws. Btw, do you have any plans to do Sinnoh in near future? I think it will be interesting to see how you'll integrate ancient Sinnoh (Hisui) to your Sinnoh Region Review
Yes! I do very much intend to cover Sinnoh, as well as Hisui, though, Hisui will be separate. It technically does meet the standard to be reviewed with my current criteria, so I'll likely just make it its own video. 😊
As someone who played the johto games first, and like you said many pokemon have a significance to Johto towns (bellsprout/violet - slowpoke/azalea) i had always assumed they couldve been johto pokemon that are also found in kanto rather than the other way around. Lore wise it makes more sense this way and makes thebdiversity idea more palatable. No excuse for quilfish and houndour though lol
Now I can't stop thinking that Jasmine is thrashing on her gym, listening to Metallica or something like that. Maybe that's why Olivine's gym is empty, they got tired of her loud music. Yeah, I think this should be canon. Awesome, amazing video as always ❤ and yeah, the Gym Leaders with almost no Johto mons is simply a baffling decision by Game Freak... Bugsy being the most bizarre one - WHY METAPOD AND KAKUNA?????
I think some votes are a bit too high (like if u give 5/5 on Johto routes u have to give 10/5 to Hoenn in this category ahah) but your videos are so well crafted and full of details, I can feel your love and passion for the franchise and I totally respect your opinions. Keep going this way, greetings from Italy ❤ (Sorry for my basic English)
Well thank you for noticing the effort I put into my videos. I'm really excited to cover Hoenn too, since it's a favorite of mine, and I hope it scores well, but we'll just have to see 🙃. Anyway, it's super cool to see that I have viewers from all over the world! Very glad to have ya!
I understand your sentiment about Bruno and that's your opinion but I personally like him keeping his position as an Elite Four member in the Johto games. I personally find it interesting how he's the only one of the original Indigo League members in the Kanto games to maintain his position as an Elite Four member (albeit he went up a rank) in the Johto games...whereas Lance became the new champion in Red's absence and Lorelei and Agatha retired. The Indigo League in Johto is interesting... we have three new elite four members (one of which was a former Kanto gym leader), an old elite four member that maintained his position, and another old elite four member that got promoted to champion... Idk, something about it struck me right. Like at least some remnants of the original Indigo League from the Kanto games is preserved. And I like that Bruno also uses a Hitmontop on his team...I mean, you can't one Hitmon without the other two. Albeit he still should've either evolved his Onix (I love this pokemon but I hate it's stats and it's not even a Johto mon) or replace it with Heracross. Also, he's a trainer that many fans of the pokemon community (Jrose11, Scott's Thoughts, etc) like to poke fun at...especially in Generation 1 (his pokemon have low special, he has random AI, and in Red/Blue his movepools are ATROCIOUS) where he's straight up trash. But to his credit, he definitely became a better trainer after Generation 1...like having actually being given good moves, the Hitmons getting incredibly good special defense after Gen 1, some viable abilities, and especially the physical/special split in Gen 4 which really helped Hitmonchan. But I digress XD I mean yes... Bruno's type specialty does overlap with Chuck's, and the Johto games are the only games to have type specialty overlaps with gym leaders and elite four members but that doesn't actually bother me that much. Speaking of which...Will and Koga technically also have type specialty overlaps with Kanto gym leaders Sabrina and Janine respectively and Kanto IS accesible in the Johto games, albeit via the postgame. Heck, before the B2W2 came along, the Johto games were the first ever games have specialty overlap between a gym leader and champion! - Tbf, Janine makes the most sense since she's Koga's daughter and is filling in his position after her father got promoted. So the type overlap is completely justified. - In Chuck's case, the Johto gym leaders weren't a notable thing in the Kanto games yet at the time but it's still theoretically possible Chuck was still a gym leader even during the Kanto games which chronologically take place 3 years prior to the Johto games. (Oh my god, now that I think about it...what if the trainers (most, if not all) you faced in Victory Road in the Kanto games are actually from Johto but they just Kanto pokemon for some reason... especially since in the Kanto games the Viridian Gym was closed for a long time as the gym leader was actually the boss of the criminal organization that was Team Rocket.) - One could also make the same argument for Bruno and Chuck for Lance and Clair. Not to mention both Lance and Clair are cousins and part of a family specializing in dragons anyways so it makes sense. - In Will and Sabrina's case though...uh...I really don't know, this arguably makes even LESS sense than Bruno and Chuck in some cases but at least Will exists as the newest member of the Elite Four in the Johto games and there are notable Johto Psychic Pokemon he could use and I like that Xatu is his ace. It doesn't bother me but it is something worth thinking about for someone that would be bothered by this. Maybe the laws of the Pokemon world aren't bothered by type overlaps between an Elite Four/Champion and a Gym Leader to some extent. XD So overall...it seems like type overlaps in the Johto games is inevitable since you have to take on the Johto gym leaders, the Indigo League members, AND the Kanto gym leaders...even if you replaced Bruno with Misty, it would still be unavoidable... ...or would it? You know, ever since Giovanni fled and disbanded Team Rocket, Blue became the new Viridian Gym Leader in the Johto games and he DOESN'T have a type specialty. (Even if in the Gen 2 games, the Earth Badge gives out a boost to Ground Type attacks) Tbf, that does work...especially since Blue is meant to be the STRONGEST of the Kanto gym leaders and he was Red's rival in Kanto games. He's intended to be taken on last, heck in HGSS it's actually required. It doesn't bother me but if I have to be fair, this opens up another notable contradiction in the game design if someone were to worry about trying to lessen the type specialty overlaps as much as possible...why isn't there a GROUND type specialist in the Johto games? Ground is the only type to not have a gym leader, elite four member, or champion specializing in it in the Johto games. They even had a cool new Johto ground types in the form of Donphan (which would be a good ace for a theoretical Ground specialist in the Johto games) and Gligar (Speaking of which, that pokemon got the short of end the stick in Gen 2 where it got NO Ground Type damaging moves...not Earthquake, not Dig, not even Mud Slap. Gamefreak really made Gligar cry right there) but there are no major trainer battles who use these pokemon which is a missed opportunity...either they replace Chuck as the gym leader or replace either Will or possibly in your case Bruno as an elite four member. But still. Also, very hilarious that in Gen 2 that a FLYING Type specialist was the one that gives you a TM for a GROUND type attack but then again Brock give Bide in Gen 1 so can't poke too much fun about that. Also, maybe I should really watch your Johto Region repair video for more details but if you want Misty to be the new elite four member to replace Bruno in the Johto games, which is perfectly fine and in a way kinda also makes sense in some ways (It is confirmed in Fire Red/Leaf Green that she does look up to Lorelei, who is essentially the second water type specialist due to many ice types in gen 1 also being part water type and needing a Slowbro on her team and many water types can learn ice moves anyways), this does open up another question...who WILL be the new gym leader of Cerulean City? A new water type specialist we never heard of that will take Misty's place? (Hey, it could even be your own trainer OC! That would be fun) And it's not like one change the type specialty of the gym, the gym badge is still the CASCADE Badge so it probably would still be a Water Type specialist.
PLEASE READ - CORRECTIONS: Yes! I am a human who makes mistakes, but I'd like to pin this comment to address them real quick. Thank you to everyone who respectfully corrected my mistakes in the comments - I appreciate your attention to detail and appreciate the input. I'm not one to die on the hill of being objectively incorrect so, here are some corrections that need to be made to my video:
In Johto, Karen stops you from speaking to the manager. She is actually the anti-karen
I know, right? She's the best E4 member, in my opinion. 😊
about lance's dragonites, you can get underleveld pideottos in Veridian Forest in yellow and HGSS, also, remember that team rocket was experimentin on soundwaves that forced evolutions, so maybe his pokemon got caught too
I always assumed the changes to the Ecruteak towers was because “Tin Tower” sounds an awful lot like “Twin Tower,” and having one tower burn down while the other unintentionally evokes 9/11 would be upsetting.
Yeah, I think you're probably right about that. I hadn't considered that until after I wrote the script, but I'll likely address that in an upcoming video.
One is Bell Tower and the other is Sprout Tower. It's Bellsprout. They still have a connection, they just changed it up a bit.
I definitely agree, I love the day/night cycle, and when I was a kid, I used to wish that Hoenn had it too. 😊
@@saffroncitytv hoenn with a day/night cycle would've been fantastic! I sunk dozens of hours into sapphire and emerald with my sibling growing up.
Why thank you! That's very generous of you to say 😊. I'm really glad you're enjoying the Region Reviews!
I love the massive "College professor roasting your assignment" energy during the pokemon diversity section lol
Hahaha 🤣 The frustration just could not be contained!
@@saffroncitytv It is something that deserves the frustration considering HGSS were a... Golden... Opportunity to rectify it but they just went "eh" lol.
Lol 🤣 right? I love Johto, but it certainly has its flaws!
This video made me really appreciate Johto. I can’t wait to see more of your region analysis videos!
Johto is such a good region 😊 I love it so much. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😊 thanks for checking it out.
I hope your Hoenn review is coming soon. Been loving this series so far.
I'm working on it now 😊 it's gonna take a while to do the review, but it's in the works now! 😊
Pokemon retrospectives are my safe place, especially Johto. Thanks for this
Another exploratory reward in Goldenrod in the female Machop you can get in a NPC trade. Many a player has resorted to this to topple the dreaded Miltank that Whitney uses.
10 year old me never realized Miltank was hard

It would have to be 3 parts cause there's "too much water" 😂

1:00:24 honestly the firebreather and juggler classes look to me like a possible attempt to reference Kabuki theatre in a way that is digestible to Western audiences. If so, that would hugely support the historical themes of Johto
These two videos were so nice to watch. I now want to go and play Jhoto again. I think Hoeen will always be my favourite but Jhoto always feels like a warm hug home.

Misty in the E4 with a few extra Johto Water Pokemon would have been soooooooo cool!!
Another great video, Sabrina ♥
I know, right? Misty could've been an awesome addition to the Johto E4, especially considering how memorable she is. 😊

Appreciate all your hard work going through the regions
Well thank you very much 😊 I'm really glad that you enjoyed the video. 😊
Man you're blowing up quickly! Seems like just yesterday you were at 800 now you're over 4k, I love it!

Falkner should've had Hoot Hoot like in the anime. Using hypnosis to put u to sleep so Pidgeotto could sweep your team
this! also scyther evolves into a johto mon, so I think it’s a good choice for bugsy. scizor would’ve been too op for the second gym
also magnemite is the only gen 1 pokémon that had a type change in the shift to gen 2, so I think it makes sense that Jasmine shows it off.
I'm glad you enjoyed the review! And I know right? All these bug options, and he chooses the worst available ones. Madness.
I think I heard somewhere that he's studying Pokemon evolution and in particular whether anything happens if Metapod/Kakuna are made stronger without evolving.
@@bunjiman0723 Is that cannon or just a MatPat theory?
I started my journey in Johto, but heart belongs to Hoenn so I can't wait for you to visit there next!
Same!!! I started with Pokemon Silver, but Pokemon Sapphire will always be a fave since it was the first game I ever actually owned. I, too, love Hoenn.
Now I remember why your voice hit me the way it does:
You remind me A LOT of Julianne Moore as Poppy in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The same campy, friendly tone of someone eager to teach people something fun in that "easy listen" way to make sure we don't miss a detail.
Overall, fantastic video, can't wait to see whats next, especialy since gen III was my actual entry into this franchise ^^
Haha, I'll need to check that out! I haven't heard of it. But I'm glad that you enjoy my videos and I'm glad my voice is pleasant to listen to. 😊
This was such a great review.
Some other people be blinded by nostalgia on these older games.
IMO, pokemon needs to step it up for future games...
I always viewed Johto from a battling and Pokémon perspective and didn’t really like how it played based on the available Pokémon and gym leaders. But your section another lore and another video about the real life connections between Johto and the Kansai region in Japan rekindled some love. I’m going to do a new run of HG soon!
I love the introduction. It’s a mix of the old Disney Channel introduction with a hint of the “Pokémon News Network: Kanto”
Awesome! I'm glad you like it! 😊
The epic conclusion!
Such a beautiful crafted video! Thank you for that. So excited for hoenn next
That's an interesting take. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! 😊 I'm really glad you're enjoying the reviews!
I have really enjoyed these videos! Can't wait for the next region review!
Well thank you very much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the review. I'm also looking forward to Hoenn!
You bring up a lot of good points I wanted to comment:
- I am completely ok with Bruno staying in the Elite Four and having a very Kanto promiment team! But definitely Chuck needed Johto representation.
- Jasmine shouldn't use 2 Magnemite but instead 1 Magneton! Since that line received the new Steel type, I think back in Gen 2 it was a perfect fit! (Side note but has someone noticed Johto's Gyms don't repeat any types from Kanto!)
- I have always heard and believed myself the complaint that Johto Pokemon are not available in Johto.
Part 2. Hell yeah.
Hoenn is next. :D
Hell yeah it is! 🤘
Going thru a major Pokemon nostalgia thing right now, thank you for adding fuel to the fire! I love this series!
Well cool! I love a good nostalgic phase. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos 😊
Johto is a region I often overlook. Thanks for making me appreciate this region (even if I'm, like you, really frustrated by the gym leaders team)
Absolutely! There's a lot to appreciate in Johto! But yeah, the Gym Leaders definitely need an overhaul 😅
I wish you make an analysis about the pokewalker in the future; I really enjoyed that peripheral ❤
Pokemon diversity (and level curve) and such huge detractors of these games for me. I’d probably hold them much higher if they fixed those 👀
Larvitar being post Kanto outside the Safari Zone..like I can kinda understand it, but the game also has more available Dratini..a pokemon of the same tier as Larvitar.
You missed Tyrogue from the list of odd egg baby pokemon. He was my first ever odd egg in my first playthrough of Pokemon Crystal back in 2001 ^^
Hehe 😅 here I was thinking that my memory was reliable.
Well thank you very much. I love Crystal, it's such a fun game. I hope you also enjoy Hoenn when I cover that one, too. 😊
* Trainers have interesting teams
* The levels scale up in such a smooth way
* Pokemon have much more useful learnsets and coverage options
* There are so many useful Pokemon encounters that you can find
It still feels unfinished and the Kanto region is rough (encountering level 2 Diglets after you obtain 13 badges...) but it's a tremendous improvement to the base game.
Johto is my favorite region, and GSC and HGSS are among my favorite games, so it was a real treat for me 😊
I think your analysis really did the games and region justice, and I never felt myself disagreeing even over its flaws!
Right?? I definitely agree, that was a great QoL improvement. 😊
Its amazing review!!
And i “+” to your words about Johto.
I think the fact that firebreather walt and juggler Ian are found outside national park adds a bit of environmental storytelling, I imagine that they’re there to put on a show for people going in and out of the park and are just trying to make a living as entertainers 😭
and I love that the national park is full of school kids and other young trainer classes, I imagine that they’re just visiting the park after school, since the Trainer’s school in Violet city is right next to it.
and finally I love that there are so many pokemaniacs around mahogany and the lake of rage, like OF COURSE those are the kinds of trainers that’d be the most interested in seeing the red Gyarados. just so much good stuff all around
That's an interesting perspective! I hadn't considered that. Thank you for sharing! 😊
you can get qwilfish early in gsc via swarm encounters, and you can catch it midgame with a good rod in hgss, it’s just a 2% encounter in route 32. it’s one of my faves so I always go for it 😭
and while I agree that locking away “middling” stat Johto pokémon in Kanto is wack, I think the intent was to have some more exploratory incentives for completing the post game, and to show the change in pokémon diversity in kanto in the 3 years since the events of gen 1 (but that might be a reach tbh)
but yeah I think it’s crazy that route 42 has no new Johto grass encounters 😭
anyways great video as always!! can’t wait for the next video! :D
Oh dang! You're so right! I did not know this! And I researched the availability of Qwilfish a lot, too! I'm gonna have to add this to my pinned comment with corrections. Thank you for pointing that out! Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing the facts!
Cool review, completly agree with your view on Johto :)
While the gymleaders representation of Johto-pokemon is quite lackluster, I still found them challenging and enjoyed battling them.
Great work, and getting close to 5K!
Well thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed the review! 😊 I also feel very nostalgic for Johto, and had a lot of fun making this review.
This is worth watching for sure
I hope you enjoyed it. 😊 I had a ton of fun reviewing Johto!
@@saffroncitytv It was enjoyable for sure, If you put it together would of being a super long movie through. Glad you didn't
@@saffroncitytv Great!

Waiting for a plane ✈️ this is perfect viewing. Going to crack my DS out when I get home.
Awe yeah! There's nothing like cozying up under a warm blanket, some black tea, and a DS with a hard copy of HGSS. Dang, that sounds good right now.
So good! Maybe the entertainers are because Osaka (Goldenrod city) is known for comedy and entertainment?
Woooo 😁 I'm all ready to watch it. Home from work with my feet up
That's the best way to watch a video! Feet up, chilling with a snack!
That's an interesting perspective! It would make sense lore-wise, and that's a neat way of looking at it. Thank you for sharing. 😊
FINALLY. I HAVE WAITED SO LONG.

Daw shucks, you're too kind. Lol thank you. 😊
I couldn't agree more. Jasmine is such an awesome Gym Leader, and just about every Johto Gym Leader deserved a better team, for sure.
I remember my egg hatched into a Shinny Igglubuff, I was so upset Transfer wouldn’t let me send it to Bank

I think some votes are a bit too high (like if u give 5/5 on Johto routes u have to give 10/5 to Hoenn in this category ahah) but your videos are so well crafted and full of details, I can feel your love and passion for the franchise and I totally respect your opinions.
Keep going this way, greetings from Italy ❤

I agree, Lofi Lia did justice with her version of the National park ❤❤
Oh, I've gotta check that out! I love the National Park theme. 🥰
But I digress XD
I mean yes...
(Oh my god, now that I think about it...what if the trainers (most, if not all) you faced in Victory Road in the Kanto games are actually from Johto but they just Kanto pokemon for some reason... especially since in the Kanto games the Viridian Gym was closed for a long time as the gym leader was actually the boss of the criminal organization that was Team Rocket.)
- One could also make the same argument for Bruno and Chuck for Lance and Clair.
XD
So overall...it seems like type overlaps in the Johto games is inevitable since you have to take on the Johto gym leaders, the Indigo League members, AND the Kanto gym leaders...even if you replaced Bruno with Misty, it would still be unavoidable...
...or would it?
