The shortest fluoro leader I throw is one rod length. So the knot is constantly in and out through the guides on every cast.
With my old man hands, it can be really hard to tie some of these knots. A double uni works great for me because I've tied those so many times, I can do it blindfolded under a heavy blanket. And out on the boat, being able to tie knots fast is critical for me. I do want to try the FG, though. I've done it a few times with the old belt buckle trick (tying one end to your belt buckle, and the other looped around a door handle) but they never turned out so well. I guess I should probably put more practice into it.

I’ve never really put much thought into it. I’ve always used the yucatan knot and ran the leader between the first eye and the spool. It catches the eyes a bit, but never had any actual problems with casting. It’s worked for me, and it’s easy to tie. If I need a new leader, it takes me 30 seconds to put a new one on.
I tie fg’s at home, before going out for tourney or fun fishing. However if i have to tie one on the fly, out on the water on the kayak, i do not tie an fg because its hard if wind is blowing and everything else going on, so on the water i will tie a uni to uni and then lower my drag a click or few to compensate for the strength drop of the knot.
One of the problems i have trying to tie an fg on the water, is i lose count of the turns, and cinching it down, its hard to make sure you did it right out in the sun.
The uni to uni will work, but after a day of lots of casting, you will notice the end starts catching the eyes, and it slowly starts to become damaged….. you just have to keep checking it and re-tie if it does. But like G said, if you tie a 12ft leader with an fg at home, you have plenty of room to tie on new baits and it will last a while. On the uni to uni, i do not like to tie a leader long enough to get on the spool becuz that knot will sometimes catch line on the spool and cause problems…..so i usually tie an 8-10ft leader on uni to uni, where its about a foot above the reel.
I tie the FG with a rizzutto finish, then a touch of super glue. It takes about a minute+ for me.
I also make sure my leader has a larger diameter than my main line, which holds MO BETTA for me.
Larger braid to thinner fluorocarbon has slipped/failed with me.

I learned this from Gene Jenson years ago it has been very beneficial to me in saving line . My suggestion to everyone using this knot is to take your time to ensure you tie it correctly so it doesn't fail also test it by pulling the heck out of it before spooling up that way you can rest assured it won't fail on the water .
I just do the 5-6 twisty double loop thingamajig. Idk what it’s called but works
FG knot is the way to go G! I also use a long leader, usually twice my rod length and then some🎣

Been doing this for a while now and for the same reasons you just said I run an FG knot as well. I’ve only had one fail on me and I don’t think that was the knot itself I just don’t think I got that one Tied correctly.
Same here, seems strange how you tie 4 FG’s back to back but 1 ends up having something “OFF” about it 😂

The best knot is the most effective fishing knot you can tie correctly.
I’ve seen friends tie knots sitting in garage that takes them 5 minutes. I’m like wow. Now how long that gonna take you in the wind or cold or rocking boat or rain, lol. 😂
