  • I don’t understand why the Miller Knot isn’t more popular. It’s strong, easy to tie and allows good bait movement! Try it!

I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

You’re basically tying a Trilene knot (reference Berkeley’s Trilene brochure) with fewer wraps (you use just 2 wraps versus Berkeley’s 4-5) and an extra step of passing the tag end through a twist of the final loop created. This additional final step taken to create your “Miller” knot from a 2-wrap Trilene knot leaves a tag end that faces toward you as you retrieve your lure. This tag end orientation is unfortunately a weed collector when using fluoro while dragging baits across and over snot algae growing on the logs in my favorite lake. In the very specific situation of fishing these logs, I simply skip the last step of your Miller knot and use the Trilene knot which has a more weedless tag end. As you might imagine, the double pitzen knot fares even worse in this very specific situation of snot algae because the double pitzen knot yields 3 tag ends. These 3 tags act as a mini treble hook to ruin a good cast into the logs. You don’t need a strong knot if that knot never experiences the pull of a fish due to weed fouling.
Im curious now about knot strength. Over thanksgiving I’ll avoid relatives by conducting some head to head knot strength testing of your Miller knot against a 4 wrap Trilene knot. I’ll report out on what I find! Good video!

@@MattStefanFishing Matt, I took some time to test the Miller knot versus the Trilene knot as promised. Recall that I mentioned avoiding using the Miller knot in an abundance of snot weeds as the tag end orientation causes it to collect these weeds, whereas the Trilene knot tag orientation doesn't do this. While I won't change my weed avoidance strategy and stick with the Trilene knot in the very specific situation of weed snot on laydowns in my favorite lake, I did wonder what I might be giving up in knot strength. In head-to-head testing using 10 Lb mono and each knot tied to a 2/0 hook, I pulled the hooks apart to see which knot would break first. In multiple tests, the Miller knot proved stronger than the Trilene knot by a margin of 7 wins for the Miller to every 1 win for the Trilene. The Miller is by far a stronger knot and I'll continue to use it as a mainstay where I don't have a ton of snot weeds.
While comparing the knots, I also noticed that the small loop of the Trilene knot created by passing the line twice through the hook eye more easily "wanders" on the eye of the hook, and can end up in the sharp "gap" that is created when the hook eye is formed in manufacturing (except for some VMC hooks where this gap is epoxied over). This becomes very annoying as you go lighter in test down to say 4 Lb mono/fluoro, or if you use low quality hooks. You definitely risk the hook cutting the knot itself. The Miller does a far better job of keeping the double wrap in one spot on the hook eye. Details matter.
Great video. Great knot. Thanks for sharing.

I only use one knot anymore. And that's a type of hangman's knot. Because no matter what the knot won't give. The more you pull the tighter it gets. You'll be able to bend out hook to retrieve a stuck bait. The line will break before the knot ever will. And it's literally the only knot I found that will do that every time. And never give.

I’m sure it works just fine but I’m a believer in ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” and I’ve literally never broken a knot bass fishing using the palomar and I prefer to keep thing simple by using just one knot

This is a close variation of a knot we used to teach in the mid 80s when I worked for the In Fisherman. We tied what we called the improved Trilene knot , same knot just without the twist before going back thru second loop. Great knot

I have been using the Miller Knot for 40 yrs. Only I never did the final "figure 8 step until the MDJr video. I wrapped 5 times and back thru the double loop. I agree with you about the strength. Never have I had it fail. My Wife started fishing only a few years ago; it is the knot I taught her for it's ease. As we were watching a video where you were tying it; she piped up and said "hey, that's my knot!" So, you gave her affirmation and confidence it is the right one.

I’ll have to give it a shot. I pretty much tie a double pitzen, or trilene knots for my fluoro, and palomar for braid. I rarely use mono. If I do use mono, I tie a trilene.

Crawford figure 8 for braid in wood , floro and mono. Also blood knot for step up, step down mono to mono or floro leaders. FG knot for braid to mono or floro. Rapala loop knot for floro or mono
And snell knot for punching or flipping with braid in green stuff.

Simple question. When you're wrapping that last loop around your line prior to putting the tag end through it does it matter which way you're wrapping the loop over the line?

Man, the Trilene knot has been failing me lately. Lost a nice fish and a Vision 110 last week when one slipped on me. Lost a jerkbait yesterday to snags that I feel like I should have been able to pull out. I think the trilene knot relies on mono kind of melding into itself, but floro is to hard and slick for this to work well. I’ll definitely be giving the Miller knot a try.
