I agree. I watched the film for the first time ever last year’s summer (despite being a 90s kid) and I’m surprised how criminally underrated it is, along with “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” which is my all time favorite Dreamworks movie, even more so now because it was my grandma’s favorite and it’s more dearer to me since she passed away 6 years ago next month

      Exactly !
It’s so criminally underrated that it’s tragic as it is a TRUE masterpiece!
Especially since it’s my No. 1 favorite movie of all time ever since I first saw it in the theater when I was 8
I wish I could relive that glorious experience at least once again !
It’s even above The Lion King for me bc of its greater spiritual meaning , Catholic themes , and timeless messages

Its one of the best villain songs of all time for sure 👍
Plus the catchiest and possibly most intense song in the movie besides The Plagues song

“You can’t take me” from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is dark, but “Sound the bugle” is way darker….sure, it turns uplifting in the final part (to show Spirit’s resilience) but the majority of the song is the lament of a broken defeated soul.

I was going to mention this too :) Its such a beautiful, haunting song. It plays when Spirit is ready to give up too and accept his fate. Definitely one of the darkest musical moments in DreamWorks history, even if the ending is a call to action and remembering what you're fighting for.

Sound of the Bugle is much darker. I remember reading a comment that I didn't know about, that Bryan just finished a concert the night before it was recorded, they thought it would be perfect since his voice was almost completely gone, making it sound rough and very low, he was tired, and in pain. The lyrics, "As the seasons change, remember how I used to be. Now I can't go on, I can't even start. I got nothing left, just an empty heart. I'm a soldier, wounded, so I must give up the fight." After going through so much, taken from his family and thinking he was never going to see them, thinking Rain had died, and being stuck and shipped somewhere else, he had nothing left. He fought so hard, and he started to lose hope and didn't care what would happen to him cause he had lost everything he cared about, so he thought in that moment till he fought back on the railroad scene and Little Creek saved him from the forest fire. I have watched this movie way too many times as a kid, now an adult and actually understanding what that scene means to you as an adult.

Prince of Egypt is a no-brainer when it comes to this list. What’s great about “Deliver Us” and “The Plagues” is that they don’t hold back they’re punches in showing the severity of the situation while still being family-friendly at the same time, which is an extremely hard thing to do. Stephen Schwartz is nothing short of a lyrical genius, and when combined with the musical talents of Hans Zimmer, is an absolute masterpiece we can’t get enough of!!!

"Sound the Bugle" should have been the choice for Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron. While the ending portion is hopeful, the rest of the song is just devastating and very relatable to the point of making you self reflect on a deep level leading up to that ending. It's a lot more powerful and darker than "You Can't Take Me", imo.

I don't think I heard of those ones, but I do remember he did a cover of Hallelujah(the most covered song for every movie and TV show ever) and it’s equally as good as Rufus Wainwright’s version(the one I grew up with). I was shocked to find out Jeff died by drowning in the mid-90s at the age of 30. Hopefully, his biopic does get made to introduce his music to a wider audience. It's always heartbreaking to hear a musician die at an early age. There are so many musicians whose stories are heartbreaking in their right, but the male musicians whose stories never fail to break my heart are Kurt Cobain, Rob Pilatus, Michael Jackson, Tupac and Biggie. For the female counterparts, Selena Quintanilla, Amy Winehouse, Aaliyah, and Karen Carpenter.
