This Chalkboard arts and craft project does not use chalkboard paint, but instead a roll of black chalkboard film. This is applied to a piece of 2' x 2' MDF wood you can buy at your lumber store. Be sure to use a sharp utility knife when cutting the film.
I cut up a pallet with a sawzall type saw, keeping the nail heads in the wood for a rustic look. I sanded the wood lightly and painted it with flat black spray paint.

The chalkboard paint recipe is from Erik of Root Simple website:
1 cup latex paint
1 tablespoon cool water
2 tablespoons unsanded grout
You can use any color of latex paint that you like.

That's a really cool idea! I drove by some pallets behind the drug store, while picking up an Rx, and thought about you. I should have stuck in the back of the truck! And, there a lot scrap wood and planks in the garage and backyard. Bet my mom would love to use something like this!

What would be great is to make it magnetic by putting the film on a piece of sheet metal, use construction adhesive to attach it to the mdf, then make your frame

Do you sand the wood before you paint? Some of my pallet wood is rough concerned about splinters? Also did you say you also use chalkboard paint?
