Probably the only footage of this version of the scenic railway before modernisation. Love how the ferns grow on the track. Really small rails it had! Bit bent in places. I remember the counterweight going up telling you the trains on its way. I also remember the winch house which had at the time a noisy motor, tye send and return cables for counterweight and train, and an inclinator dial showing where the train was in its descent. Jm
I remember those good old days! It's quite a rip off now. The other week we visited NSW and wanted to walk down the giant staircase and walk along the track to the bootom of the railway, and catch a ride back up the top. I called them to ask how much a one way ticket would be, and just for my daughter and I we would have to buy a pass to the whole thing for a hundred dollars. I told them to forget it. It seems they have gotten greedy in the recent years.
I thought I'd look up the Scenic Railway ... and based on the comments for this vid I figured I'd be disappointed. I was right ... the new cars are fully enclosed so you won't even feel the wind in your face, and all the tickets I could find online will set you back upwards of 40 bucks. Glad that Deane provided a record of it before it became a tourist trap.
I personally went on the original as a kid, on a school excursion! Absolutely loved it. The new safer carriages take away the true experience that the older open air carriages gave. They were much scarier! It felt like I was almost standing up on the steep parts.....
Those were the days. OH&S hadn't ruled the roost by this stage, so that woman walking down the steps at the end had plenty of easy opportunities to experience first hand a moving machinery pinch point.
Guys just so you know it has been fixed very well and it has walls and a better roof and now they have bars to hold onto you can not stand up or you WILL hit ur head but trust me it is way fun now
