I happened across a demo ride at the local dealer and had the opportunity to take the 2019 Indian Chieftain Bagger for a test ride. But this isn't your standard Indian Chieftain! This has the stage 3 116 Cubic Inch MONSTER engine! This was my first ride ever on an Indian, let alone on a 116 c.i. motorcycle! Join me as I share my first impressions, thoughts, and opinions.

Yup, harley definitely has a unique sound. With the new milwaukee 8 do you feel like it lost the sound a bit, or not so much? The 2018 fatbob I had didn't have the typical harley sound. It was stock exhaust, but still sounded more like a metric to me. I'm sure that 117 is a monster! If I get a chance I'll try and take one of those for a spin next time around.

I've owned 4 Harley's and still have a 48. I went down to a demo ride at the local Indian dealer on my streetglide. I rode everything they had on the truck and ended up trading my glide in for a Chieftain Classic that day. IMO the Indian rides so much smoother than the glide. But, I'll never get rid of my 48. I love both brands.

That is the chandler ridenow, I've done a couple of demos out there. I also rode a 2019 white darkhorse with the 116 kit and upgraded sound system. It was awesome. The bike did not like going slow, very torquey. Throttle was smooth, handling was great. Played with the ride modes, there was a noticeable difference. Much better than any HD I've ridden. Current ride is a '10 victory cross country. Next bike will be an Indian.

I got a107 street glide. Haven’t ridden the chieftain. I really want to for comparison because I know the rear suspension is much better. I don’t mind having the 107 instead of the 114. I think it’s got more grunt off the line. The 114 to me felt smoother and more progressive with a ton of top end. But the 107 does 90mph+ like nothing. I came from a 103 Dyna street bob so that was crazy to me because that feels like you’re gonna die with the wrong movement at 80mph. The first time I took my flhxs to 80 it was just me cruising then looking at the speedo like oh shit! I better back off a little I’m in a 55 zone that’s flooded with cops. Baggers are awesome! I don’t think you can go wrong with Harley or Indian.

I’ve ridden both a Roadmaster and an HD Ultra Limited. Of the two I preferred the Indian It was better balanced, handled and stopped better through mountain roads. The Ultra is much more top heavy so at low speeds it’s more of a handful. It’s fine if you want to get on an interstate, set the cruise and just roll down a highway. The Indian will do that as well but once the roads get twisty I found it much better balanced.

I just rode the 116 at a Indian Demo day here in SoCal, it might even have been that exact bike. I liked it a lot. I'm not sure I liked it more than my Street Glide though. The problem with Indian over Harley for me is that I like to accessorize and buy stuff for my bikes and there just isn't the support for Indian like there is for Harleys. I ride harleys everyday. I sell harleys for a living. I worked for Polaris for 10 years 5 years before they bought indian and 5 years after they bought them. I rode a Harley the whole time. The indians are starting to look more and more like harleys... not a bad thing but still moving in that direction. I've ridden them all the Indians and the harleys, I feel like a Harley Davidson is just an all around better product. The exhaust from factory goes to indian all day long. The fit and finish goes to Harley every single day. After the demos on the indians where they put out the latest and greatest and even bikes with stage 3 116 kits. I'd take the Milwaukee 8 motor over the thunder stroke hands down. The torque in the low range is what I'm looking for and harkey does it. The rattle in the front end of Indian when accelerating is garbage. The ride quality at speed and the handling of the Indian is comparable. All that being said I'd rather ride a Harley and it not for the sound and it's not because I just like the harleys but it's a total package Harleys are just better bikes. The prices are about the same so buy a Harley.

I like HD, but they are to expensive, and my local HD doesn’t help by marking everything up $ 5,000and then saying ‘everything is negotiable’. I respect your opinion, but HD is losing ground and really gaining new customers, just look at sales data. Just my opinion, but after having two Goldwing F6B's and one Goldwing, they just don't have soul. They do handle great, but the suspension is seriously dated with no front end adjustment. Yes, it is quick for a big bike, but I would recommend riding everything in the segment and truly pay attention to the differences. I have a 2018 road glide with a stage 3 kit on it and love it so far. I looked into the Indians and almost got one instead but the biggest issue is they don't have enough stores. I do long distance rides a lot and if my Harley breaks down I can get a part or a tow to a fix every 50 miles or so(roughly depending on where in the country). Indian however you can end up being a state away from the nearest shop, that's a long expensive tow. If you ride more local and there is a dealership in town it's not an issue, but if you do long multi state rides its something to think about. Maybe when Polaris builds a bigger network I'll switch but for now having a dealership nearby all. The time beats a few minor luxury things for me. Just my opinion though everyone get what they like best!

I run a 2015 Chieftain, bought it used. The engine mods were cams, big sucker intake and pipes. It has tons of power, but if you buy one, remove the cat and run true dual pipes. The 111 will put off some heat, you won't regret the upgrades, even if you just go 111. I like the preload for the rear shock so you can firm up the ride some if you like. For and 815 lb scooter, it gets right on down the road.

My 2006 Yamaha Stratoliner 113 with 40K miles is not only a Harley killer but an Indian Chieftain killer. If Harley and Polaris cant out pull my 13 year old Yammy V-twin by now and with more CI's, they probably wont ever. Add insult, I have rode the Thunder Chicken 111 Indian and it was a far cry from what my OHC 106 Victory Cross Country manages. Thank you and you do as well. I did watch that video and always have wanted to put a Raider in my garage. I still have the Strat but I only seem to ride the CCT. What surprised me on the CCT over the strat is how well it sticks to a line in the turns. Straight line, my stat will pull the Vic but as soon as I start turning the CCT is gone. That surprised me. I rode a few of the Chieftains and I love the fit, finish and the chrome is great. Personally the 111 is one of the best looking V-twins made in recent years but I was a bit shocked when I twisted that right grip and not much happened. One ride was on the demo days and I asked the guy running the show if they de-tuned the bikes to keep people from acting a fool and he said they were factory. Chances are, my next dresser bike will be the Indian but until then I am sticking with my Victory.

Not a big fan of the Thunderstroke engine. Don't care for too much power down low. Makes bikes jerky and difficult to ride smoothly particularly cornering. Don't like the whiskey throttle when you hit pot holes either. Also don't care for all the heat thrown off the Thunderstokes.
I do like the engine characteristics of the new Challenger a lot. Power is at the top where it's useful for things like catching up to a group or passing traffic. My M8 does fine though you have to shift it a little more often than you would a more powerful engine. No biggie, but bang for the buck goes to the Challenger.

I laugh at these people that say they have stage 4, 5, 7, 200 whatever and then say take it easy. Ride the piss out of it, that's what it's for.
