What a gorgeous puzzle. I have four large trays. I put all the pieces out on these trays. I pick out the edges first and do them on my puzzle board. Then I pick out distinct features. In this picture I would have picked out the house and some of the animals. When I reach the filling stage I resort the pieces by shape.
I spread all the pieces out face-up on foam boards (For 1000 piece Ravensburger, I use two 20 inch by 30 inch foam boards) You can see pieces that have similar colors/patterns. You can also find something in the puzzle, and find all the pieces for this. These kinds of puzzles are difficult if you just have pile(s) of pieces (cannot really sort them). I have done this puzzle. I actually did it in essentially the opposite order of you which fascinates me. I found it easy to identify the road pieces, the ghost/sheep, the owl, the bee, the house including the doorway, the green "bushes" with yarn-like texture. I did the sky, tree, and green hills last. I agree that it isn't easy due to all the detail. It is the same artist as Ravensburger 2000 "Novel Avenue" which is one of my favorite puzzle of all time (Novel Avenue is much easier, and not as busy). The next puzzle has so much blue sky!!
Wow I really need foam boards now, thinking of getting some on Amazon this moment! Could be fun to try new methods. Thanks for sharing! Interesting that you did revers order from me. Funny the things brains can do and how they can work differently. Thanks for the comment again!
I did it almost from bottom up as well. The ground, characters, and patterns were easier to pull pieces for and work. I left the trees and foliage for last as those are always my least favorite.
I just finished this one a couple weeks ago, and I agree with @clarkkent7973 - I dumped out the pieces on a foam core board (I use one 30x40 and a couple smaller trays), pulled out and assembled the edges, and just started pulling pieces with the same texture. I don’t remember the order of things, it was fairly random - just what stood out to my eye as I looked over things. Using the smaller trays made it easy to complete mini-sections and then super easy to slide into place. I really liked this one, and I just might keep it in my stash.
I loved completing this one. Finished in less than 5 hours. It was my style of busy puzzle and I did get really motivated while watching the World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship. I didnt start with sorting other than flipping and pulling border pieces. Began with the border and then pulled and worked patterns or things I could easily recognize where it would go. The polka dot cat was the first part I worked on and was my favorite. I left the foliage for last as that always gives me the most trouble. I did the sky and part of the witch and then mostly worked from bottom up as I could identify those pieces easier.
WOW 5 hours for that? That's crazy! I think you are right for the strategy, just like I would do the 500 pieces. Just flip and puzzle. The problem for me is the space. I would go crazy trying to assemble the frame with 1000 pieces on the table. Do you use foam boards or something??
@@JigsawJohnie I have a short puzzle table that i use while sitting on the floor. Holds up to a 1500 piece puzzle. Absolutely love it. Comes with sorting tray drawers that can be removed and stacked. Using trays is really what works for me. I usually dump the pieces back into the box and put border pieces on my working surface and the rest on trays in a shallow ish layer face up. It isn't a single layer, but I try to keep the pieces in the trays face up when gently moving them around. Having too many pieces on my table or board at a time can be too overwhelming. So I only start with border pieces on the table and then pull out pieces from the trays as I need them. While I have used foam boards to use as a working puzzle surface, I never use them as a sorting method. I need trays with a border to keep the pieces in.
lovin the Halloween puzzles glad you have done them all month... love this one... I did that image in a Temu wooden one... it was fun... now I want it in the Ravensburger.... I never sort... my brain cannot comprehend how anyone can pick pieces out of a box..for me that would take forever.. I flip all the pieces, do the edge, then do the puzzle in sections picking out pieces that fit each section, not by color but by image for that section.... yes I refer to the images on the box or poster a lot..... I enjoy looking for pieces.... I do not speed puzzle nor time myself.... I just relax and enjoy............. looking forward to the next Halloween puzzle..... congrats on 1000 subscribers....... well deserved.....
Thanks for the comment. I see more and more comments about puzzling for the fun of it and ignoring time. Thanks for sharing the strategy too. Seems like a popular way to do it too!
@@JigsawJohnie yea I think people are getting burnt out on the speed puzzling craze...... yes I enjoy the championships they are awesome... but I dont watch speed puzzling channels..... and I fast forward thu time lapse...... I enjoy you seem to have a good balance.....
Ive ordered this puzzle a few days ago. I love this artist. I usually just sort out the edges, build the edge and then I dump all the pieces back in the box. I shuffle the pieces and usually there's a colour or pattern that stands out and I grab a couple of pieces and I start puzzling from there. I'm definitely not a sorter. I hate it xD great video!
Thanks for sharing! That's not a common method, usually people prefer having all the pieces facing up. I puzzled from the box once on the Cloudberries "HANDS" puzzle. It was fun! Might have to try again :)
I would sort edges, then since this has so many characters they would be a pile, then if the house was easy to tell, sky, then other distinctive colors each a pile, and last a pile of misc. Maybe a lot of piles, but I don't like picking thru the pieces over and over and so the pain of sorting eases the pain of rummaging! Before you told us I was guessing you might have done this between 6-7 hours. I don't like Halloween stuff, but IF I did, this is my favorite so far as I like the more cutsy than ghouly stuff. Thanks once again for an entertaining video!
And thanks again for watching :) I will have to try more small piles later at least give it a shot. Might save some time by doing it that way. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful puzzle! I may have to look for this one. I have been doing puzzles since 2020 and not exactly a novice but not an expert either. Generally, I sort the pieces by edge, then color, and then shape. I sort from the box or bag or dump a little at a time on the table and sort it out. Probably not the fastest technique. I haven’t timed myself before. 😊
I do a lot of busy puzzles - maybe 1/3. I do like you with what I call my pre-sort of 5 to 7 trays. I spend longer than you on this because I’m a slow puzzler by choice. Then I start to build islands. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for the comment! Always good to read from other puzzlers. Just curious how long would you say it takes on average to pre-sort? Also what do you mean by building islands?
Thanks for the input! I like to have my space organized so maybe it's the main reason I use trays even at times when it'S not necessary. Thinking of getting foam boards now.
That's a neat puzzle! Halloween is not my thing, but I would do that one. Sorting these kind is just sort of grab as I go and try to place things where they go.
I think it's a good way to do it, I only did this once (the Cloudberries Hands puzzle) so I'm not super confident and I never know when to use this strategy. Thanks for the comment!
I found this one really hard. I tried sorting but aside from the edge pieces everything else is colourful. In the end I shape sorted and then tried to place it piece by piece. It’s taking me forever😂 and this gal finished the challenge stormtrooper puzzle easily. I must be having brain freeze it’s going to take me to Halloween. 🎃
OHHH!! Stormtrooper Challenge is very soon on my list. I was keeping it for the 1000 subscribers celebration so I'm a bit scared to start it!! Any tips for me?
Yes sort out the edges and just put to one side they are no real help at this stage. Do DarthvVader and all the pinkie pieces . Then lay out all the pieces the correct way up and I started moving faces and like bits together. Then I worked out from Vader . All of the figures are slightly different in size or stance . It was an utter chaotic mess with pieces everywhere . It got less and less which was satisfying . I then permanently glued it since it never ever gonna be done again. 😂 Enjoy you will love it declutter and make space it takes every surface you have. ❤
Love your content, gratis om 1k I turn every piece, while I do this I take out cornerpieces ans depending on the puzzle I sort some distinct colors. Then I just go with the flow 🧩
Thanks for the comment, seems like a popular strat by reading the comments! How do you deal with the space? Do you use foam boards or you leave all the pieces on the table? Seems like 1000 pieces is a lot for me to work with.
@@JigsawJohnieI use 2 boards (A3) where I dump te pieces, I don’t mind them stacking, als long as they are rightside up. I tried the smaller trays like you use, but I like them bigger because I feel obligated to sort more explicit if I have more trays. Does that make sense? 😂

Hi, Jigsaw Johnny. Love this puzzle. Yesterday, I did a really easy Ravensburger 300 piece - Enchanted Brew. Thanks for your great videos.
