  • Before the creation of the family of bombs called Paveway, "precision bombing" was unheard of. It was only in 1967 that this revolutionary navigation and guidance system would change the way of making war: from "educated guesses" to margins of error of barely inches. Learn more about the Paveway smart bomb.

Correction, the German Luftwaffe started using aircraft launched remote controlled smart bombs successfully against allied shipping in the bay of Biscay in 1943. Later they even sank the Italian battleship Roma with such weapons when it attempted to defect to the allies. The Imperial German Navy came within an ace of using Zeppilin launched remote controlled bombs/torpedoes in WW1. The Americans were a little late to the game.

But were those remote control weapons as accurate as the paveway? We're talking centimeters of margin of error with the paveway...

The crew of those ships hit and sunk by the German Luftwaffe smart bombs, including an Italian Battleship, were not concerned with centimeters of accuracy, a sinking is just that, a wreck on the sea bottom. The Luftwaffe made history in 1943 with smart bombs, as well as ejection seats in same year and jet flight in 1939. The Army was the first to send rockets into space in 1942 with truly revolutionary large scale liquid fuelled engines fed by turbo pumps and analog guidance computers. Also first use of helicopters in naval and Luftwaffe operations ((FL282 and FA223 and others). Plans also included space planes for bombardment of the continental USA. I can start on their revolutionary small arms, Mkb42, Stgw44, MG42, FG42, and tanks and Type XXI Electroboots Uboats but I haven't the time. Decades ahead......
