Pottery is fired in a traditional wood-fired kiln. Master only use 50-60 year old pine firewood from Gangwon-do, Korea. Gangwon-do pine trees grow in places with large temperature differences, and their property allows them to maintain high temperatures for a very long time and do not easily extinguish fires. It also helps the ceramics to be fired in the best condition.
1. About the history of ceramics in Korea -
The history of ceramics in Korea is very long.
Around 4900 BC, during the Neolithic Age, ‘comb-pattern pottery’ and ‘stone-pattern pottery’ spread throughout the country. Around 1000 BC, ‘plain pattern’ earthenware without any patterns was used. Since then, about 1,000 years ago, from the ‘Goryeo period’, full-fledged Korean ceramics continued to develop.
2. About Goryeo celadon -
‘Goryeo’ is the name of the old period of Korea (918-1392 (a period of 474 years)).
‘Goryeo celadon’ made during this period is very famous all over the world. In particular, the color is very mysterious and mysterious. It is a color worthy of its name, containing all the ‘color of jade,’ ‘the color of the sea,’ and ‘the color of the sky.’
3. About Joseon white porcelain -
‘Joseon’ is also the name for the former period of Korea (1392-1910 (a period of 519 years)). During this period, Korean pottery techniques developed significantly.
Also, this was the period when the most pottery was produced.
‘Joseon White Porcelain’ is also a traditional Korean pottery that is very precious and highly regarded throughout the world. It has a mysterious glow.
The pottery produced in the video is a type of ‘Joseon white porcelain.’
This is a matte white inlaid peony Joseon white porcelain with no gloss.
4. A 900-year-old traditional Korean firewood kiln
In the traditional Korean firewood kiln, pottery is placed in a room on each floor in a wide terraced manner. When pine firewood is burned at the bottom, heat and hot smoke rise along the stairs, and the pottery in each room is fired by applying the height difference.

That is not porcelain though, it’s stone ware. The white slip is what may contain porcelain, or kaolin to achieve the white color.
