Japan an ultra modern nation and, yet it keeps its ancient traditions alive with age old manufacturing tied to age old traditions. They look incredibly beautiful made from paper of all things. They may not be the most comfortable to wear and I wonder how hard wearing they are, saying that Kudos to Japan.
Question: is the washi paper used to make the shoes have prayer’s written on it by any chance? It wasn’t mentioned in the video. I think it plays a significant role in why the shoes are so special. 😊😊😊
Amazing number of processes. Starting from the written word, I assuming texts of prayers !? What attention to detail, what mastery, what art. Thank you for showing the craft of the priest shoes.
I thought these shoes were made by carving poplar tree wood. Just like our whole foot wooden clogs used by gardeners and farmers. Interesting to see how they were built layer by layer. What was the loosely woven fabric used as base material for the lacquer, hemp?
I love so much everyone's respect and devotion in the meticulously deliberate and gentle movements of each stage of the process to craft shoes for priests. For me, it's the reverence of a ritual. I have the honour to be able to treat our local priest regularly with physical therapy to express gratitude for all he does for our rural communities through his compassion and humility. Thank you for a profound video. It made my day!
So amazing and very beautiful thank you for sharing such a awesome part of your culture. I am so impressed by the Japanese culture and way of life. Makes me wish I was Japanese but I am Native, First Nations from Canada. Living in the US
Those are stunning! I love to watch the creative process and these artist have mastered it! Thank you for sharing! Love and best wishes from Florida USA❤
Thank you for the video. I understand tradition, craftsmanship and art. I do not understand how these shoes relate to Shinto or other religions, why they are made the way they are, or why they continue to be worn. A great opportunity for a very brief education was lost when the reason for the item produced so carefully and lovingly is not explained.
Not just paper and lacquer Lol. What was the interfacing used to strengthen the shoe? Are the wooden soles slippery to walk on after being lacquered? What was on the paper? And what was put on the sole?
Yeah, you can certainly not run while flinging prayer papers at demons in these. They didn't spare a thought for the feet that would go in them. People thing wooden dutch clogs must be uncomfortable but they are not, the inside used to be shaped to your foot, not flat, and the front it curved up so you can walk better, working people shoes. They are nothing like these flat blocks.
Thank u for sharing ur craft & tradition! 17:42 i've a new appreciation for my western comfy padded shoe. Jus wondering for anyone wearing these...since there is no(or it appears very little) cushion or protection from cold, are special stockings or socks worn 2 protect feet??
Fascinating and exacting process, meticulously executed. But, my goodness, they look uncomfortable to wear. Would be interesting to know the origins and meanings of the process.
Thank you for this video. I though this shoes were complete from wood made like the netherlands traditionel woodshoes (named Klompen in the netherlands or clogs). It was interesting to see the steps you made to build these traditionsl shoes.
Online store in description. Apparently Japanese people who aren't Shinto priest can't just come into the shop and buy some, looks like they can buy them online. Orbisvitvjust for "foreigners"? $1,900 USD! 😳 🤷
Does anyone know if there is any particular meaning/reason behind the writing on the washi paper? Are they perhaps prayers, similar to how some Egyptian mummies had instructions written on their bandages to help their soul pass Anubis’ feather judgement and be allowed into the realm of the dead?
I am giving you one job. You have to make cover for electric pole for protection from earthquake waves. You take rubber tyres ,play with inside design ,make ring types, use velcro or rubber threads for attachment. Cover electric pole upto neck for protection from earthquake jerking. Either put chipping inside or make rubber design to support pole. It must look artistic. Jay bharat.
An amazing process. How long does it take from start to finish? I can imagine having to wait for the lacquer to fully dry between applications can add up.
Brocade is just one of 3 different finishes they sell. I wonder how many pair of socks do they wear to keep them to not fall off taking steps to walk in such a stiff clog? 🤷
Sorry, I don't comprehend. Someone goes to great lengths to create this beautiful shiny black enamel coating only to cover it with material. Layer after layer, sanding and polishing only to cover it all up. SMH.

I love watching Japanese artists and craftsmen. The mindful attention to detail and quality are so pleasing to see. Thank you for sharing this video!

An object crafted with such an artful skill is not an "object" anymore. Thank you so much!
Shoes so comfortable you feel like you're walking on prayer.

Brilliant artistry and it's so refreshing seeing a young man carrying on tradition.
Thank you so much 👍👍👍
I would like to wear these shoes once.
The sound you hear when you walk in these shoes is great!
Thank you so much for your comments 🙏🙏

What an interesting and absorbing video. Thank you so much for posting.😊
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sooooo no one is going to enjoy seeing the wonderful shiny black finish that took so long to build up.
🎉🎉🎉🎉
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much 👍👍👍👍
Yes! It may be called “basic black,” but it definitely isn’t basic.
It also depends on the priest l believe. If I remember correctly, the higher rank the priest the more colourful the shoe

Wow!
wow so elegantly crafted!
Un trabajo precioso 😊👌
Awesome!!! ❤ so neat. What a unique way of making shoes and what a special skill ❤
Exquisite craftsmanship 🤩🤩🤩
Wonderful.

Amazing

OMG, I hope it's comfortable to wear for those people!
I cannot imagine a less comfortable shoe than this. In any case, it seems to be of very high quality.

Mon dieu quelle dure travail manuel incroyablement magnifique.
Such wonderful craftsmanship ❤️🇺🇸

Waaw , its so fantastic and interesting to see, how you make this beautiful shoes🙏🏻
Hi from Denmark 🇩🇰
fantastic. I was wondering what these were made from!
So beautiful 🥰🙏🏽
Fascinating and exacting process, meticulously executed. But, my goodness, they look uncomfortable to wear. Would be interesting to know the origins and meanings of the process.
Beautiful
Wonderful process but concerned for your lungs! That surgical mask won't stop the fumes from that lacquer. Make sure have good ventilation!

AMAZING WORK AND DEDICATION!! ❤❤❤😊
Wonderfull and delicate ! ❤ De France 🇨🇵
Does anyone know what is written on the paper?
Wow amazing, love them 🤩💜
I think these shoes are good for marathon running.
Is there written something special on the paper?
Is there a difference in any way (in meaning) of the ones with brocade coating, compared to the ones without?
Same question goes to the colors chosen.
"Made for Shinto priests. Therefore, the general public will not purchase it. Anyone can purchase on our online site." WTF? 1:03
Online store in description. Apparently Japanese people who aren't Shinto priest can't just come into the shop and buy some, looks like they can buy them online. Orbisvitvjust for "foreigners"? $1,900 USD! 😳 🤷

Walking in those things must be heck
I love the vermillion colour ❤
Paper on wooden base has some writings. What does it say?
They are likely just old daily schedules for the public that, after that day, aren't really useful so they're repurposed.
Beautiful!
An amazing process. How long does it take from start to finish? I can imagine having to wait for the lacquer to fully dry between applications can add up.
It takes around 2 months....
Yo: quiero unos!
No soy japonés ni sacerdote ni hombre.❤
How long does it take to make one pair? They are beautiful.
Why being so meticulous on the lacquer if it is to hide it with brocade right after?
They're beautiful, but they don't look comfortable.

Incredible!
Do the words on the paper have a function or is it just recycling?
The washi paper is washi kozo if i spelled that right, or is it called washi for a diffrent reason?
Q bellas obras de arte
