It's called an "overture." It's a very old-school movie theater thing.

That sounds great, I remember a different experience. Overtures by 1979 were basically gone and I remember a lot of people sitting in their chairs looking all confused and wtf is going on, where's the movie? Lol. (1979 tried to bring it back because The Black Hole had an Overture too.)

The producers clearly wanted to play with people's mind and knowing they would expect to listen to the TV theme version they made this long starfield intro and then wham! The pounding sounds of the new score in their face a new theme that just blows you away !

OMG I remember this so vividly, Me and my Dad, having just got our popcorn and pop, finding our seats to this overture, settling in...
... and then that magnificent Jerry Goldsmith fanfare !
... Just so moved by the music throughout, especially the Enterprise Theme, but also the Main Theme and the Klingon Theme.
And then almost exactly 3 years later when our family got our first VHS machine, this was my second VHS tape I purchased for it (after, of course, Star Trek The Wrath of Khan) leading up to Christmas.
... And this overture... sent me directly back to that moment and the goosebumps I had.
... tonight felt EXACTLY like that moment... lol

I really hoped it would grow on me but the more I watch it the worse it gets for me. I think part of that is the 70s colour scheme hasn't aged well, the pijamas, the blaster beam etc. I get that Spock is semi purged of emotion but he is borderline robotic throughout the film. The enterprise refit exterior is stunning though.

It's hard to match the epicness of the work that both Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner produced for these classic films. Michael Giacchino's music is good, but in no way can it match the classic soundtracks of classic Trek.

Hell yes, I Love Star Trek: The Motion Picture so much and Star Trek: The Motion Picture along with Moonraker with Roger Moore and Time After Time with Malcolm McDowell are the most underappreciated sci-fi films of 1979. Star Trek: The Motion Picture is one of my favorite Star Trek films. Star Trek: The Motion Picture had a stellar music score by Jerry Goldsmith, the acting from William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and DeForest Kelley were all excellent, and the scene with Spock coming aboard on The Enterprise was also great.
I also really love both Moonraker and Time After Time. Time After Time is a brilliant time travel film with Malcolm McDowell, Moonraker is a very underrated and awesome bond film, and Moonraker will always be my favorite Roger Moore bond film. Moonraker had an amazing music score by John Barry, Michael Lonsdale as Hugo Drax was a great bond villain, and Lois Chiles was a beautiful bond girl as Holly Goodhead. Overall, I always loved Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Time After Time, and Moonraker from 1979, 1979 was a great year for sci-fi films, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture as well as Time After Time and Moonraker are all very underappreciated and great cult classic sci-fi films.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture along with Moonraker with Roger Moore and The Black Hole with Robert Forster are the most underappreciated sci-fi films and I really love Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a very stellar and great Star Trek film, it had a very good plot of the Enterprise crew investigating V'Ger, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture had brilliant stuff like the Jerry Goldsmith music score and the performances from William Shanter and Leonard Nimoy. Star Trek: The Motion Picture as well as Moonraker and The Black Hole are all way much better sci-fi films than any Star Wars film made after 1980's The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars was never the same when Gary Kurtz left the franchise in 1980, and I always loved both Moonraker and The Black Hole on repeated viewings. Moonraker is my absolute favorite Roger Moore bond film, The Black Hole is a very underrated and excellent sci-fi Disney film, and the John Barry music scores for Moonraker and The Black Hole were both absolutely incredible.
Overall, I will always have a soft spot for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Black Hole, and Moonraker. I can't believe that Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Black Hole, and Moonraker are all 45 years old now in 2024, they are all great cult classic sci-fi films from 1979, and I would easily re-watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Black Hole, and Moonraker over any Star Wars film made after 1980's The Empire Strikes Back all day anyday.

He also sat with my mother, and I during the season premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation which when it started he immediately recognized it as the same music from the movie. Now today at 53, and even 4 years after his passing. I can not listen to this without those blessed memories flooding back. An the flood gates of my eyes letting loose. A beautiful piece, leading to beautiful memories of a shared time with a loving father. Thank you Gene, Thank you Cast, and Thank you Gerry for this, and all you did, and are continuing to do with this franchise... Indeed the human adventure is just beginning, and will continue...
