One of the 99% Dutch viewers here 👋
We are not chauvinistic at all, that's why we watch every single video a foreigner makes about our country ;)
Haha, I hope you approve!
Ik voel me totaal niet aangesproken, als ik ergens een video over Nederland zie van iemand die geen native is ga ik t gekijk kijken🤣
😂🤣😂🤣It's so true. Also, EVERYONE wears orange top to bottom at any international event we think we should win AND we make sure we are the loudest
It is quite funny to see how every video about anything remotely Dutch is "colonised" right away by the Dutch.
Klopt en jij hebt een antenne op je dak, dat vind iedereen ontzettend leuk!
The fun thing about people from abroad making these videos is that we learn something about your culture as well! I love a good mix & match 😁
Thanks! 😃
The reason for the butter + hagelslag is very simple:
A. We alsmost always use butter on bread, regardless of what else we put on it.
and
B. It makes the sprinkles stick to the bread so you don't cover yourself in sprinkles when you pick it up to eat.
The combination is heavenly! Use cold real butter...
Exactly! But since I was never a great fan of butter on bread I do this with peanutbutter. Its glorious.
@@habanijntje8057 SAME LOL EVERYONE CALLS ME WEIRD. Maar ik lust gewoon geen boter dus hun kunnen lekker optyfen.
Chocolate paste and hagelslag... guilty pleasure
Big shout out to the Netherlands for your culture that has given me endless ideas about the cultural differences I've experienced since moving to this country! I hope you all enjoyed the video... Part 2 coming soon!

I'd be happy to see part 2. For a people who claim to be very direct, myself included, we do seem pretty inept at just ending a phone call (or saying goodbye in general). That being said, I have gotten in trouble with girlfriends in the past for just hanging up, without going through the entire spiel. Depends on your viewpoint, I guess. Also, we Dutch do have some quite crazy celebrity culture as well, if you ask me, but I agree it's nothing compared to American standards. Finally, welcome to the joys and pains of living further off the equator. Enjoy your long summer evenings!
Question 😁 if you have € 1000 to spend in shops and they're open 9 ours how much would they spend if the shops were open 24/7 and what would that do to the costs of running that business.
Oh man, in trouble for not doing the full goodbye, that's hilarious haha. I'm definitely enjoying the summer evenings. Glad you enjoyed the video! Part 2 coming soon :)
Haha, I'm trying to understand your question, but not getting it all the way
@@exploringtheforeign the cost of keeping the shops open for more ours doesn't lead to more spending but leads to higher costs to run the business.
That sketch about the birthday had me dead haha loved the video! 👌
Haha, thank you! That was one of my favorite parts to film; glad you liked it :)
I didn't know that was such a Dutch ting to do, so I loved u shining a light on that!
@@exploringtheforeign It needs a part 2 where you all sit around in a circle and eat worst, kaas and/or bitterballen and talk about current affairs.
You know what they call it when you run out of bitterballen at a dutch party? A worst kaas scenario
@@Flimpofloempieflomp dit kan gewoon niet ........
@@januspanus6690 En toch deed ik het.
Congratuling the relatives of the birthday person is from a time when child mortality and general mortality was still high. So people wanted to congratulate parents and siblings on taking good care of the birthday person and express that they are happy the birthday person is still alive.
About your blooper : That lady actually did IMMEDIATLY used the heel command on her dogs the second they walked up to you.
And you are not wrong, everybody i know who has dogs ( and myself and my dog Dex included ) goes to extensive dog training.
Its pretty common to think of people who dont train their dog as anti social assholes in the Netherlands.
This is mostly because we expect a certain level of conformity from each other to not cause problems.
Not training your dog can cause big problems, so yeah, that is heavily frowned upon. Or worse.
Interesting! I definitely can feel that vibe here that you should get your dog trained, no questions asked.
Also i think the dogs where to enthusiastic (not agrassive) to listen right away.
true !no such thing as bad dogs ..only bad owners..
We also have policies in place for dog breeds that are prone to display aggresive behavior. Dog breeds that are determined to be a high risk cannot be used for breeding programs, and cannot be imported either. For the risk category dogs, the owners need to follow a mandatory training program.
@@hendman4083 wich is a scientificly unsound policy ... its based on nothing ..you should look up the real statistics .. the only reason some of these breeds are demonized is because they are popular with certain tyoes of people that like a tough scary dog .. and because of that and these dumb preconceptions these poor animals are sought out by idiots and being bred and used as fiighting dogs and used as a accesory pitbulls are one of if not the nicest dog breeeds there are .. and they suffer becasue of this idiocy... its basicly rascism towards dogs ..and any form of prejudice based in ignorance is just dumb and harmfull... fact is people make money of breeding dogs all kinds and because of that there is no push towards real regulation because ..money ..so they use the same easy logic as with people blame it on immigrants or in this case use a similar populair belief and dont talk about the truth .. animal breeding for money is an evil bussiness and the shelters are full of animals stray cats all over the country ..its horror ..but we dutchies love to make money over the backs of animals ..burn a couple thousands pifgs alive ..who cares ..ignorance and greed thats hell for ya right there
About the store opening times: our country is number 1 worldwide in working part time. A lot of people work 36, 32, 24 or 20 hours instead of the fulltime 40. Especially when kids are involved, people tend to cut back on the hours.
Now they can shop during office hours ;)
Makes sense!
@@exploringtheforeign it’s also aimed at keeping small businesses alive, as they cannot compete with shops being open 24/7 as they are usually operated by owners.
It’s meant to keep variation and lively cities, whilst also allowing some more restful times on the streets for people living in those areas.
thats mostly the women
@@8alakai8 quite a few men do it too. They go from 40 to 32 hours a week. It's called 'papa dag' (daddy day).
@@exploringtheforeign i used to work 24, even with those mahoosive dutch taxes I could live comfortably
the part with the dogs you called a blooper: those were friendly dogs looking for a hug!
tha part about celebs: I once ran into one of the biggest Dutch singers, he was just casually strolling home, on his own, looking at his phone and he literally bumped into me. I only recognised him after he looked up. "Guus?" I said, "yeah" he responded, "Can I shake your hand?" I asked. "sure thing". And we went on our way. Wonderful
I think that people working in shops also deserve free time
Definitely respect that. It was still just an adjustment for me coming from the US where a lot of stores are still open up until 7 or 8.
As he says, it's something we take for granted since we all live that way. As a foreigner it's weird.
Still it's strange that everybody going home after work will encounter closed shops. The shops are open when the customers are at work...In the meantime supermarkets have taken over their business. They are open until 8 or 9.
@@exploringtheforeign we work less hours than americans , so we usually have time in the week to get some shopping done. And every town has one 'buy-night' when shops are open till 20:00 or 21:00. But that is usually only in the city center, not in the outskirts.
@@exploringtheforeign where I live AH closes at 22 so do the coffeshops. Jumbo closes at 20.
Dog training is serious business in The Netherlands. My dad was involved in dog training in the 70s, before I was born and he told me about the techniques that were developed already back in the day. My parents owned a German Shepard that was too big to become a police dog (shoulder height 70 cm, that dog was a small horse) but boy did that dog need training. He was very sweet for his own people though and my mum being only 1m58 was able to let the dog out at night in the dark all by herself. Her k9 was all the protection she needed haha.
When you do a search you'll find lots of police dogs around the world (also from America) get trained in The Netherlands.
So accurate 😂😂😂! Hagelslag is ridiculous 😂😂 and I’m Dutch but have always thought that congratulating everyone in the family on a birthday is super weird 😬
😂😂 glad I wasn't off from the truth
Especially when it’s a circle of 20 lol
those dogs were just enthusiastically saying hi! they must have liked you
I'm a combination; being Dutch, lived abroad (Curaçao and Sint Maarten) and after 10 years came back...and I love your videos!
Really means a lot, Tia! Thank you!
Oh yes, that congratulating all and sundry on A's birthday I was always like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah just get on with it." Hagelslag op brood, lekker! 🤗
Haha, glad you can relate to the video, Dik!
I'm really happy I've found your channel. I went to the Netherlands for a week in September and fell in love with it, Amsterdam in specific. Appreciate that, Ruurd!
The congratulations on the birthdays is interesting. It reminds me of Portuguese. They say "Parabéns" on your birthday, which is literally congratulations. I love learning about other cultures.
I am Dutch and some of the things you mention have always seemed weird to me as well 😂 Like congratulating EVERYONE on their loved ones birthdays or eating 15 slices of bread for lunch instead of just eating something that’s more nutritious… I guess we’re a peculiar crowd 🥲
Haha yes, you guys have some special things, but we all do!
This is such fun to watch! The 'blooper' with the only dogs in town, not trained to the t. The birthday congrats indeed like a pro. You're such a nice guy!
Glad you enjoyed it! And thank you for your kind words!
Nice to see you so fluent juggling both languages there, good job man nice vid.
Thank you!😃
the goodbye on the phone had m dying and is painfully accurate
as a dutch person, I think this was one of the best videos so far about typical dutch culture! and you bring it which such fun!
Dankjewel Nina! Ik ga nog pt. 2 doen haha
things like "koopavond" (one day in the workweek when shops are opened later) used to be much more important since thats when a lot of families would do the weeks grocery shopping
thats why the one shop is open an hour longer on thursday, probably their "koopavond" originally
since shops are open on sunday in a lot of cities now, and supermarket are often open until later anyway, that seems to have become less important.
My girlfriend literally just mentioned the "koopavond" to me about twenty minutes ago haha. Interesting, though!
The Netherlands has a lot more single owner/worker shops and having diner with the kids is still kind of holy, otherwise the parents might not see them whole day.
Thanks for such a nice video 👏🏾👏🏼👏🏿
Very nice vid...fun how you take so much personal stuff, like girl friend and family into this vid. I really like it.
Thank you, Henri! Really appreciate you sharing this feedback :)
Yes!! ik like this video, can´t wait for Part 2 😃

Actually about Veterans. Each year in the beginning of summer there is a event called National Veterans Day. Where all veterans are thanked and there is a parade and concert for them. Sometimes there are even local days like these. But this big on is in the Hague and with personal from the cabinet and even the king being there. It's also live on television (NPO1).
Also, 65+ do get a lot of discounts everywhere they go.
Sam, you are hilarious 😂😂 I can so imagine your awe about these cultural examples of us Dutchies, you described them so accurately, it’s good that you hold up that mirror in our faces. I will never ever congratulate anyone other than the one who’s birthday it is 🤣🤣 It will save me soooo much time when entering the party, I can go straight for the bar instead of spending half an hour congratulating 4 generations hahaha you rock!

Shout-out from a fellow Californian in San Diego! I'm quitting my job and going to NL/BE for the first time in October. I've spent hundreds of hours on the language already and can't wait to experience the culture for myself. I guess these videos will have to do for the next month. Thanks for sharing!
Woah, awesome! What got you into NL and BE culture from San Diego? :) If you have any questions, feel free to hit me up!
@@exploringtheforeign Long story, but short version: feel like I belong more in EU than here and want to be a citizen, which takes just 5 years in NL/BE (would be 10 in IT); culture fit, (relative) ease of language, and opportunities for immigrants led me to learning Dutch with a plan to head to BE (or NL as a backup)
Super leuke video! Ik realiseerde me niet echt dat deze dingen zo typisch Nederlands zijn.
I watched this on CharlieVest's channel. Thanks for sharing!🙂
Thanks for watching, Alyssa! I was super excited to be featured on his channel
I like the chill casual way you are doing this. Nothing like: "Hey, guys! I wil show you the TOP TEN of... bladybla. NUMBER ONE:". Just chill and relaxed. Just 'normal'.
This must give you a clue about where I live😂.
Appreciate that feedback!! And haha, you're definitely in the Netherlands it sounds like
What you forgot about that last thing is that the sun is out longer is the summer because we set back the clock an hour and it's earlier dark in the winter because we set the clock forward an hour.
Interesting insights from a foreigner. I mean, I'm a foreigner myself but from much closer, Germany. Even though, it's always interesting to get information about cultural habits. As far as the sunset is concerned, I'm living in Spain and here in the summer it's even later, due to the crazy summer time it's around half past eight.
Same in Switzerland, for the opening hours although larger supermarkets tend to be open until 20.00 hours during the week. I had a friend from the US visiting us, and had the same kind of remarks. With a nice sense of humour he sad "well, If I wake up at one o clock at night and might need a screwdriver, I know that the shops are open, and I can buy one" I suppose there are more ways of looking at it, but personally I don't like working at nightshifts or get up at 4 o clock in the morning and I suppose that is also true for people in shops. Its nice if you can have dinner with your childred or bring them to bed. So the basic attitude of 24 hours service in many countries in Europe is " where it is necessary like hospitals, police, its OK" . The other jobs, why kill for a big part of the population there life quality. We know it is very unhealthy also to work at night. Also the weekend or sunday. A big part of community life are still societies, like carnaval, or soccer. When people can share freetime it is more easy to do this kind of activities together. But... its true, you can't buy a screwdriver at 8 PM ;) and you loose some kind of comfort with that.
Thanks for sharing the general European perspective on this :)
Most supermarkets at least were I live in the Netherlands are open till 21/22 just most other shops close at 17.30 or 18.00
Hey maatje, nice video! Great Rico

Great rendition of a concept I've found myself drawn to as a repatriated Dutchman.
It felt like an honest expression of your perceptions and experiences so far. Even the rehearsed parts didn't detract from that.

@@exploringtheforeign It shows! And it truely makes for your channel to have added value over the overly produced channels (notjustbikes is still awesome though).
One little tip towards becoming a permanent resident though, and I'm sure your girlfriend/wife must've told you this, but people tend to frown upon a colgate smile. I'm actually looking to have mine steered more towards your direction over the fact that I'm an avid smoker, but there's always a thing as too much. Not a criticism, far from it, but there's no such thing as pearly whites in NL.
Appreciate that!
And haha, that teeth comment made me laugh. Honestly, I've never done any kind of teeth whitening or anything in my life. This is just how they are. I actually feel like they used to be whiter in the US haha.
@@exploringtheforeign Haha, perhaps apologies are due on my part then.
It's just that impecable teeth are a rare sighting in my experience.

Those business hours are somewhat of a legacy thing. 50 years ago, everything closed on 6PM. Except on Thursday, which had "Koopavond" (Shopping evening), where most shops would close at 9PM. Saturdays, they closed early at 5PM or even earlier. On sundays, nothing was open, except for Horeca, like bars and restaurants.
That legacy is still in place on some parts of the netherlands. You might have experienced it when grocery shopping on Saturdays. Even though grocerystores are mostly open till 9PM, most people still do their groceryshopping on Saturday, even though there's no need for it anymore.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing :)
If everyone plans everything, they often think: “Well, I have a gap here, I could do something in that time…” Which leads to not having free spaces a lot. When I was younger we had to ‘plan’ when we could game together 4 days in advance. Like that’s crazy.
As a Dutch person, I can confirm you are spot on. Regarding the Hagelslag that is your peanut butter and yelly to us. ☺

About the #1 thing: There actually is another combination I would suggest you give a shot it is fairly common as "Dubbel beleg" Replace the butter with peanut butter, that's it.

OK where are grocery stores only open until 6pm? That changed a lot the last years, also in smaller cities.
Those examples (of small stores) aren't even grocery stores, only one sells food. Supermarkets are open on Sundays. There are only a few days a year when some are closed; like either the 1st or 2nd day of Eastern or the first or second day of Xmas.
